2014-11-04 Thread Eleanor Martha Burke
I am finding this thread interesting. I was under the impression as a Mac
newbee that people did not fill up the Finder with icons but went to the Doc
or to the Documents folder. Now am I missing out on something? Maybe you
are referring to the Documents folders as Finder folders, please enlighten
me!

Oh wonderful! Been looking for a similar solution myself as can't
understand why Finder by default shows everything in alphabetical order
with folders showing in spurious places. Hope I'm making sense.

I find that if I am in column view

For example If I do this on my documents folder I find at the top of the
window are my folder alias files but after that the folders are all
grouped together alphabetically followed by a similar alphabetical list
of the single files in the . Given that that Finder pretty much treats
the folder alias as a folder anyway this makes some sense.

So in most practical sense this this replicates the Windows or Android
or Linux arrangement

Re: [Mac-access]: Sorting finder with folders on top on mac?

2014-11-04 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Eleanor,

The Finder is the application that manages the storage of files and folders
whatever the application that created them.

On a Mac, it is a bad idea to put lots of icons on the desktop as they all get
loaded into memory when the computer is booted and can therefore slow down the
machine.

The Dock contains aliases to applications which are in fact in the Applications
folder. It can also contain pointers to folders stored anywhere on the Mac.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: [Mac-access]: Sorting finder with folders on top on mac?

2014-11-04 Thread Anne Robertson
It’s best to use the Dock for aliases. Personally, I don’t bother with them as
it’s so easy to locate any files or folders I want by using the first letter or
two of the name. I’m really pretty organised when it comes to storing files.

Also, don’t forget that it’s easy to reorganise the Dock so that your items are
in alphabetical order. Just use Cmd-Option-Right or Left Arrow and you’ll hear
where you’re putting the item you’re moving.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: [Mac-access]: Searching A Folder

2014-11-04 Thread David Griffith
I am planning a Podcast on using Spotlight to search for files in Finder
but essentially option command space will bring up a Finder search.
There are other options and customisations for different types of search
you can then do but I will go through these on the Podcast.

Alternatively there is a free utility

called Easy Find which also provides an easy access to a Mac search
facility.

Thanks for that.

I used the Mac Mini under Mavericks as you know but haven’t tried with the
latter, the machine worked quite okay with that and ran every task I put before
it which included recording, streaming, chat and so forth.

Yes, a little slow but nothing to worrying, a bit like an iPhone 5 running IOS
8.

the machine as you’ve probably gathered by now has 4GB of memory but I don’t
think this can be upgraded any further.

I used the Mac Mini under Mavericks as you know but haven’t tried with the

Yes, a little slow but nothing to worrying, a bit like an iPhone 5 running
 IOS 8.

the machine as you’ve probably gathered by now has 4GB of memory but I don’t

I would check on the Mac which is not showing top sites your iCloud
settings.

1.System preferences.
2. iCloud
3. services
4. Interact with the services table and make sure that Safari is checked
to synch ia iCloud

Also, don’t forget that it’s easy to reorganise the Dock so that your items

Re: [Mac-access]: Recording Voice iMessages with OS 10.10

2014-11-04 Thread Eileen Misrahi
I scrolled down and read another post regarding how to listen to an audio
message. The first thing is you need to go into settings-messages-and to the
audio recording heading. Make sure Raise to Listen is checked. This is a
toggle, so double-tap on it to turn it on. Now, this is what I have read. To
listen to a audio message, raise the phone to your ear. When you want to
record a response, raise the phone to your ear again. Like I said, I haven't
had a chance to send an audio message yet. HTH.

Re: [Mac-access]: Recording Voice iMessages with OS 10.10

2014-11-04 Thread Sarah k Alawami
This is under ios, not osx. Osx yosemite is broken right now. I wrote to
apple about this the first day i used yosemite, and submitted the issue in
bug report format. It can be reproduced.

To be clear raise to listen is under ios. I can't imagine anyone holding a mac
book to their ear. Hehahahahahahaa!

HTH.

 Hi Alam,

Yesterday, I sent my first audio message. The button (I believe) was just

You keep holding your finger there until you complete your message. I had
a little difficulty finding the send button, but I kept flicking back to
the left and finally found it. I didn't get a chance to answer an audio
message because the individual used the keyboard. This was my son and he
is sighted, so he is very quick with the onscreen keyboard. He also has an

Whenever I save emails on what ever platform I always save them as text to
provide maximum portability.

I no longer use Outlook Express but suspect that within Outlook Express you
could re-save them as text.
Alternatively you could forward them to your email on the Mac from within
Outlook.

Express. There seems some promising indications that the new generation of
Office Products will be accessible to Voiceover on the Mac. One Note is
apparently already accessible and there have been some reports of improved
accessibility in the Mac version of Microsoft Outlook so that may be an
option for importing OE emails in a similar way to the Windows client.

Re: [Mac-access]: Outlook Express E-mails on Mac

2014-11-04 Thread David Griffith
The rumours are that the complete rewrite of Office for the Mac will
indeed provide and interface and content that is more accessible to
Voiceover.
This is apparently because the rewrite is being done in more standard
Apple Coco programming language but I am no expert in this.
There is allegedly some evidence of this in as, I say, One Note and the
new version of Outlook but apparently we have to wait until next year
for the substantive rewrite of Office in terms of applications like
Word and Excel.

Still it will be a welcome development if it comes along. A fully
featured and accessible version of Office on the Mac may well tip some
more people into switching from Jaws etc to Voiceover on the Mac.

[Mac-access]: work around for the voice over selection bug in pages?

2014-11-04 Thread Sarah k Alawami
Hello to all. I have 1 last pages question. I believe the work around that Ann
posted was to fit to window or something for the voice over selecting bug. I do
have that set in zoom but it does not work. I tried to find rap to window in
the arrange tools but that area is totally not accessible. Nothing is labeled,
radio buttons that I don't know what they do are not selectable for lack of a
better term, nothing seems to work, plus most of the section even if you select
all is grayed out. I just as of an hour ago emailed apple about this and gave
them a screen cast of what happens. Over all to me this new version is a mess
to work with. and I'm seeing this in the apple forums as well. At least my end
notes still work though according to my prof.

Anyway if someone can please remind me of what the work around was/is for the
voice over selection bug I'd love to hear it.

All of you take care and happy tuesday.

keep local archives and I don't want to go back through 3 years. I'll look in
my recycled messages folder and see if I saved it there.

Good luck.

Option-e - accute accent;

Do you need any others?

Just letting you know you wrote in the subject line. Try to pay attentioon to
your anouncements.

You can set what's called gate keeper. I have mine set very securely so I
often when opening any app hit vo shift m on the app in question for the first
time and hit open. I will then get a dialogue that I gthen hit open for and it
remembers that I will let it through the gate so to speak.
