Well, since you put it that way. . I had one of the first white macbooks,
which I think was in late 2006 or early 2007. Apple's documented limit for that
model was 2GB. OWC determined that model could actually hold 4GB and could
address 3GB. I installed the extra RAM and ran Tiger with no problems. In mid
2008 I purchased my first and only MBP and gave the white Macbook to a nephew
in college. Last week I spoke with that nephew, now a grad student, and asked
how the macbook is holding up. He said it's still working great, He uses it all
day, every day. He upgraded the HD to a 500GB 7200RPM drive and is still
running Tiger with the 3GB RAM. He'll now be getting my retired last-generation
Air and the old white macbook will go to another starving student somewhere in
my family tree.

HTH,
Bryan

Hello Eric

Gordon is laughingly saying that he'd never advise anybody to stick with
playing it safe if it will work. :) But seriously if I were you I'd ask around.
See what they say in some of the forums.

Hi Lynne and others,

No I was being specific I have a Mac Book not a Pro. According to some
info the computer can use 8 GB Ram even though Apple says 4. I'm guessing
Gordon's advice would be don't push what the folks recommend.

I would love to go to 8 GB but don't want to damage my system or do it for no
gain.
Someone on this list, with a mac book, must be daring enough to give it a go!

Re: Memory Upgrade; Is It Worth While [Just My View]

2011-08-20 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Eric, forgive me if I'm repeating this message, but I strongly believe your
macbook6,1 can handle either 6 or 8 GB of RAM. IMHO Apple is no different from
many other tech companies in being conservative with their RAM recommendations.
It is often left up to third party vendors to push the boundaries and do some
real world testing so that we, the end-users, can know what the actual limits
are. There is a boatload of documentation on the web regarding the pros and
cons of running various RAM configurations. As usual, I will reference OWC
because they have been around for a very long time specializing in support for
Apple products. The following page lists Mac models and gives Apple's
recommended maximum RAM alongside OWC's tested maximum RAM:
http://eshop.macsales.com/memory/maxram

BTW for those who have a 2011 MBP or Mini, looks like your device probably
supports 16GB.

Now, if they can come up with a way to upgrade RAM in the Macbook Air, that'll
be way cool!

Cheers,
Bryan

this report makes me want to consider again taking the chance and putting 8

Gordon's earlier comments about there being good reasons why one should follow
the posted limits has me concerned. I sure wish someone else would go first!
