I had several apps update and then later in the evening the iPhone became so hot it was hard to hold. The battery was draining faster than a 3 min. hourglass. I restarted it several times, and that didn't help. Finally I opened the "Monitor" app to see what the "process's" were doing, there were several that were way into the 300's on the left column of "PID" (whatever that is) while the 100's was more common then down into the double digits for many at the bottom of the list. Many of the names I could not recognize but a few I could and they were the updates to a few of the apps. Yellow Pages and White Pages had just been updated, as had the State Farm Pocket Agent and all three of those were in the 300+ range. I began deleting the apps, but the numbers stayed high so I restarted it again after four apps had been removed. After the restart the numbers were all in the 100's and it began to cool. It is still working fine this morning so I don't know what was wrong but one of those apps (or all four) had something really wrong with them. [MacGroup] Syncing with a Palm
Dear Ones, I have a refurbished, no-longer-supported new Centro from Palm, which I got when the old one died. I've never been able to get it to sync. I have gotten the non-Palm programs via UBS cable, but no Palm data at all. I made a major mistake when I returned the broken phone before having Verizon switch the numbers to the new phone for me, but actually, it's my whole Contacts DB, not just the phone numbers, that I want anyway. I don't remember that this was a big deal the last time it happened. (This is the third replacement, and my two years are up in October. The last one didn't sync either--that's why I returned it. But evidently *I* am the problem. It appears I'm configuring something wrongly, but I'm stumped. Any help would be welcome. The machine names are the same. It's set for cable/cradle (on the Palm) and Palm Connect on Palm Desktop. I tried Bluetooth, but it also transferred only non-Palm content. Hot Sync is enabled. iSync is not enabled. Here's a thought: I'm using a new modem since the last time I changed over. So, I probably have a new web address, meaning, the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx address that I had at the other house. Re: [MacGroup] Tivo vs. Apple TV vs. ???
I have a HD Tivo with 2 cable decoder cards. Insight has no idea how to hook them up nor do they show any signs of having any of their subcontractors learn how (2 visits so far.) When I get around to it, I am going to have a house call from Geek Squad and see how they do. Currently, I just don't record in HD, although I can record 2 at once and have other Tivo advantages. I don't know anything about Apple TV. Suzanne ___ The next Louisville Computer Society meeting will be May 26 at MacAuthority, 128 Breckinridge Lane. [MacGroup] Firefox download
I downloaded Firefox 3 per directions, and it's in my finder, taking up space on my drive. It replaced the previous Firefox version, which I do have on my external drive, thank goodness. But I can't open the new one. I click the icon or in the finder, but no dice. Any suggestions? [MacGroup] Announcement from Apple
Apple announced today that it has developed a breast implant that can store and play music. The iTit will cost from $499 to $699, depending on cup and speaker size. This is considered a major social breakthrough, because women are always complaining about men staring at their breasts... and not listening to them. ___ The next Louisville Computer Society meeting will be January 27 at MacAuthority, 128 Breckinridge Lane. [MacGroup] New laptop
I got a new laptop at MacAuthority Monday, but it won't let me choose the username I'm using on my current lampshade with Panther. I can't transfer my data with a different username, can I? I'm stuck. Why is the darn thing so picky? Is there any way to get around this? If not, I'm going to return everything and upgrade as far as I can. Re: [MacGroup] Recycle dead monitor
This Saturday only, you can recycle dead monitors at a new Bike Couriers Bike Shop at 2132 Frankfort Ave (at RR tracks,) Louisville, from 9am to 3pm. They're also taking old cell phones. Each item costs $3. They're taking a few other things, too; but I didn't write those down. [MacGroup] Tivo is reliable!
I have 3 Tivo's, the earliest is an early type 2. They all have lifetime contracts, and none has broken. Well, the HD one crashed in the first 2 months, and they replaced it without a peep--paid the postage both ways. My only expense was packaging at UPS because I'd trashed the original box. I have found Tivo very reliable and totally addictive. I now feel imposed-upon if I actually have to watch something in real time. Most of the things I watch record at times I would never consider watching live. I always fast-forward the ads. I use the captions, and during the conventions I discovered that the slowest fast-forward speed still shows the captions. I could read and evaluate the speeches at normal reading speed and decide whether they were worth listening to. Tivo is like high-speed internet. Once you have it, you never consider dial-up good enough. I love knowing the names of each episode so I can choose which ones to record. I bought my HD when I did because the free service was available then. I suspected they had something new in the pipeline, and I was right. However, on my 42 tv, the newer, better resolution wouldn't look any better (says Consumer Reports.) My newest Tivo came with a wifi receiver, and I didn't have a clue what I was doing but set it up myself. When in doubt, I chose the first option, and to my amazement, it worked.
