Re: [MacGroup] TimeWarner Speeds

2016-04-14 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
TimeWarner has a page that lists a bunch you can use. I went on Amazon and
picked one that wasn’t too expensive and had great reviews. When I got it it
even had a TWC logo on it, so I guess someone talked to someone!

I got the 5370:

Yes, rolling deployment, Eric. You should get a letter. Their tech support
tells me I am scheduled for "Cinco de Mayo.” I only say that to be funny
(because they actually told me it would be May 5); no one I talked to at TWC
had the slightest accent. (Well, except for that Wisconsin one.)

I put in a Zoom as well and I love it. It really sings opera.

Re: [MacGroup] TimeWarner Speeds

2016-04-14 Thread Chris Denny
I went looking in the SEC's website today for any kind of updates to the plant
merger with Time Warner and charter and there has not been any updates since
January. I guess the other thing that bothered me was that there was someone on
the phone telling you this stuff he really shouldn't of been telling you this
stuff because there's nothing confirmed and Time Warner hasn't said much of
anything about the merger lately.
It was really just his opinion and his opinion only. Besides the fastest
Internet speeds that charter has in this area is only 60 Mb per second so if
they merge they will actually inherit Time Warner's max upgrades. You know the
problem with the cable industry is his everybody's experience is always
different and you could have fantastic experience and I have any complaints
about your cable company but then the other customer could have lots of
complaints about the cable company which may or may not have anything to do
with their service, more of a lack of understand on how their stuff works and
are they willing to learn anything about it. There are a lot of people who are
just way too lazy and expect someone else to do the work for them.

Not calling you wrong Chris, but what do you know that we need to know?

A. There is a lot of support for approval and it really could be “any day now.”

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/envelope/cotown/la-et-ct-charter-time-warner-puc-20160412-story.html

B. They HAVE to have better customer service than Comcast, who have the
statistics to back their sucky-ness:

The "money quote:”

Time Warner Cable combined. And it isn’t just a matter of Comcast’s size—the
three smaller competitors together have about 15 million more subscribers than
Comcast though they still receive far fewer complaints.”

So, I say again, Chris: what do you know that we need to know?

Yes IPv6 is available that change was done sometime last year however not
everybody has IPv6, I think it's just a matter of available IP addresses in any
given area

My experience since getting the upgrade on Wednesday has been really good over
a wired connection however the time capsule seems to have trouble and I'm only
able to get about half over Wi-Fi. I've been playing around with it and
tweaking it and I've made some progress in getting my Wi-Fi speeds up-to-date I
have found though that if you use the 5 GHz band instead of the two point for
your Wi-Fi connection is a lot better.

This is actually pretty standard and works for several brands of modems.

I have a question about the TW upgrades. Have they said whether they yet
support IPv6? I’ve not had much luck with it on TW up to now.

It sounds like you have the unfortunate experience of talking to someone from
national helpdesk which really didn't have any idea what was going on.
For anyone adding their own cable modem to their account the only thing that
they require is the MAC address so it can be added on the equipment screen. The
modem charge is then removed as well.

It depends on how adept you are at setting up your own network.

For most people, leasing is probably the right thing to do because it’s plug
and play.

But, let me remind you of the story I’ve told here several times before.

A few years ago, after a TWC upgrade, I found myself with their Arris
modem/router/WiFi combo box. My home network is tweaked a bit more than
average, and I spent a lot of time whipping the TWC/Arris box into shape.
However, I soon found out whenever the box was restarted, it went back to
default settings, forgetting all the changes I’d made.

After talking to several layers of TWC support about the problem, it turns out
they replaced the standard Arris firmware by their own custom firmware with
this reset “feature” baked in. They did this to avoid tech support hassles
because they could just tell the poor confused customer to reboot the device in
order to get it into a known state.

I replaced the Arris box with my own modem and router and have been happy ever
since.

Re: [MacGroup] TimeWarner Speeds

2016-04-14 Thread Chris Denny
No, DOCSIS 3.0 is fine. 3.1 is the new standard for 1ghz of a cable modem that
is widely available yet. There is one city in California were Time Warner is
offering a 1 GHz connection so eventually if tests are good and It will roll
across the country over a matter however long a period it takes.

The modems I recommend getting are the Arris/ Motorola surfboard 6183 the 6190.
These are modems only not gateways.

I'm assuming the new modems need to be DOCSIS 3.1, and so far I haven't found
any available at retail. Unless somebody else knows where there are some
hiding, you'll probably have to take theirs. You have theirs, John, yes?

Re: [MacGroup] TimeWarner Speeds

2016-04-14 Thread Chris Denny
If you don't mind paying the $10 a month the rent to modem and 4.99 for the
Wi-Fi, then I would keep the Time Warner modem. That being said it's cheaper in
the long term to have your own equipment, and if you purchase an Arris cable
modem make sure you register it on their website because there is a two year
manufacturers warranty on the modem. It's a matter of choice obviously but I
think if you are smart and spend wisely and do your research you will be better
off with your own equipment.

I think there was some discussion of this a while back, but what cable
routers/models are recommended by people in this group that are capable of the
new TWC speeds? Thoughts on whether it’s better to purchase or lease from TWC?

Let me dispel any rumor of TWC going to Charter, there is no final decision yet
by the FCC and DOJ and the idea that Charter values customer service more than
TWC or any other ISP is also speculation by a long shot.

That’s awesome, John!

Mine is almost a month away. Already got my new modem, though, ready for the
move.

HAD to replace my old one because it was working really badly and was sending
junk to my router. I finally realized that was why, even though all the speed
tests came through right on the money, I was getting pretty spotty internet
access. The new modem makes all the difference!

I took the old one apart today, and every capacitor was bulging out their tops,
a sure sign they are toast, or a least well on their way. AAMOF, I am surprised
it worked at all. =:-)

It lasted several years, though, so it was cheaper than renting one from TWC.

Another thing: I had a couple of great conversations with TWC tech support
people this weekend as a result of my issues. One guy, who was with TWC before
they bought Insight, said that they are all looking forward to being acquired
by Charter, because Charter values customer service highly. One thing he said
stuck out: Charter refuses to off-shore ANY of their customer support. Very
good to hear!

Gulp, that’s not good Nora, I’ll keep checking.

I received a new modem today from Hughes Satellite. I ONLY have them as a
backup.

They don’t seem to have any American’s working for them so I can’t get anywhere
when I call. If I keep Hughes direct ethernet to the Mac all is well (if you
like to watch corn grow) but going through the Apple Airport it won’t work at
all. I will call to see if they can figure out how to set in Bridge mode, but
I don’t expect good results. When I check with chat groups I find that bunches
of people can’t get Hughes to work with Apple products, nor many other products
either…

Things are better than just a few years ago, but some firms still find
themselves in the back of the bus.
