Re: [MacGroup] Apple remote

2015-11-05 Thread R. D. Preston
Hi Tom,

Please explain the reference to an app from the App Store.
Why would I need an app, rather than a new unit to replace
my less than fully functional one?

I’m referring to replacing this:

It came with an older Mac mini (mid-2010), and everything
I saw at the App Store refers to Apple TV or the like.
Don’t know if those are straight-across compatible with
the Mini’s older IR.

Russ there is a apple remote app in the App Store.
Your remote is pretty old I remember getting one with my old 17" MacBook Pro.
Don't know where I put it. Never used it. I am sure there are a bunch of them
sitting in drawers somewhere.
Here is a new one.

Hi Russ
I used the app because one less remote to lose and also it's more robust. Works
great on iPad, iPhone, and I used mostly on Apple Watch.
Too bad they didn't make it work on tv4.
However the new remote is great, especially Siri.

It uses bluetooth. Just like you can hook up a bluetooth keyboard to the ATV.
(Which BTW, is a great adjunct to any remote for looking things up or entering
long passwords for your Netflix and such.)

Some of the newer devices are coming with WiFi remotes. Our Rokus and the
Blu-Ray player can be controlled with the included remote or iPhone or iPad
from anywhere in the house over WiFi. I’m a lot less likely to lose my iPad in
the couch cushions than one of those dinky Apple remotes.

That is quite interesting but to be honest I am not all that excited by my tax
dollars being used to subsidize someone’s iPhone or Apple Watch. However, what
I really find interesting is the Google work on blood sugar monitoring with

If u had diabetes u would b very excited if Medicare gave a little help in
diabetics buying Apple Watch. It's amazing how much waste there is in the
companies sending free meters, lancets, and sticks even if u don't need them. I
have to constantly tell them not to send lancets, new meters, and batteries.
What they charge Medicare is outrageous. The watch subsidy would be a one time
thing. Also it would eliminate the need to keep a log.

Everything is moving to our phones and tablets.

Two different alarm systems in the house, both controlled by the iPhone or iPad.

I don’t have but doors, locks, Nest thermostat and smoke detector. blinds,
lighting, music…on and on and on, soon the microwave and stove, one day the
phone will walk the dog…One of the items in a recent Shark Tank that got all
the group to invest were two models of drones, the neatest one was one that was
completely controlled by an iPhone, in fact the phone BECAME the brains that
ran the drone….

Medical devices are being utilized through the iPhones….this is an exciting
time….

I am enjoying the Apple Watch with ApplePay, I go to accepted stores more often
just so I can use the Watch and observe folks around me….it’s a hoot. Paid for
my first prescription and the Pharmacist watched in amazement saying he had
never seen that before and he loved it. Went to my Cardiologist for the annual
checkup and he became so interested in the watch he said he was going to go out
and get one.

Yesterday my wife and I made a purchase at Walgreens, went outside, we talking
before we went our separate ways, the girl behind me walked out and darn near
bent over trying to look at my wrist to see what in the heck I had that could
pay for the merchandise.

Went to Meijer, the guy beside me got so close we could have both worn the same
belt…he couldn’t understand what I was doing, the guy behind him was also
watching, the clerk said “COOL”….

Trying to spread the word and as technology advances I am guessing we will
control our home devises with our wearables….

Like Lee said, it’s really the best, most everything controlled with one
devise that we hardly ever lose.

Your right Tom, so much of our medical monitoring will hopefully save society
loads of money…it’s sure possible.

Remember the doctor that presented at the last Apple Event, he has developed an
App that allows the doctor to monitor an expecting mother AND her baby
simultaneously…awesome.

Ages ago I watched a doctor explain to the interviewer how he monitors his
patients with their iPhones, keeps track of their EKG’s and other vitals as the
go about their day, all the data being reported to his office…

One of the biggest advantages for the medical profession is going to be the
collection of “BIG DATA”, the ability to understand what a readout means when
it does such and such, for they will have millions of data points to
evaluate….we may be able to tell in advance of heart attacks, strokes, etc.
etc.

Apple should give u gold one free for all one to one advertising u do.
Can't wait for glucose monitoring. Bet the Medicare meter, strip, lancet
companies will fight tooth and nail. If gov was smart, they would subsidize
watch when this happens. Would save Medicare millions per year.

Hi Ed,

Still don’t see the benefit of using an software app towards fixing a piece of
hardware with buttons that no longer work.

I’ve seen/found various sources to buy new for $15 to $30 or so. But maybe
like you, there must be many who put their remote back in the box after not
using it for a new purchase.

Any other list-readers have a ‘new' or ‘used' one available?
