Vlc and eye tv question once again.

2009-04-06 Thread Jesper Holten
Sorry the first posting was without the text intended but here we go again!

Hi all.
Apple states that voiceover supports vlc player, and I recall that vlc player
has been discussed some time ago on this list.
Which versions of vlc player do work with voiceover?

Another question is if any of you have got any experience with Eye tv 3
together with voiceover?
I would be most greatful if any of you have any inputs regarding these
questions.
Best wishes,
Jesper.

atx pc psu in a quicksilver?

2009-04-06 Thread ben mustill-rose

Hey all.

I am in a position where I am able to purchase a g4 933mhz quicksilver
with a faulty psu for next to nothing. Whilst said machine only comes
with the case, board, cpu and optical drive, it would be a good place
for me to put to use some of my redundant but perfectly good
components like some older gpu's and some pc133 memory.
The only thing that has stopped me from buying it is the issue of the
psu. I don't really want to spend that much on it, what with it only
being 933mhz, so if at all possible, i'll be using components that I
already have.

My question is, is it possible to use a standard atx psu taken from a
pc in one of these computers?

I've googled and found some people posting in 2003 that have said that
you can't due to the psu needing a 22 pin connecter which back then,
psu's didn't have, but i'm wondering if the 24 pin connector which is
comon place on todays psu's would work?
Another thing that i've found when googling is that there seemed to be
different revisions of the 933mhz moddel; some seemed to require 28
pins whilst others needed 22, so if anyone could shed any light on
that then i'd be greatfull.

If anyone has any info about what my options are for the above
situation, i'd be very greatfull.
Cheers, BEN.

To change the voice (for example, to Klaus or Sarah from the Infovox
iVox German voices), bring up the VoiceOver utility with VO-F8, press
's' to select Speech in the table of utility categories, then tab to
the pane for setting voices. You'll hear Voices, selected tab 1 of
2. You can select and choose settings for the Voice you use for
Default Voice, Content, Status, Type, Attributes, and VoiceOver menu
announcements. VO-Right arrow to the pop up buttons beside each
category and press (VO-Space), then use arrow keys and letters to
select your voice from all the available options. VO-Right arrow to
set default rate, pitch, and volume for each voice. You can do this
either by typing a number between 1 and 100 in the text field or by
using your up and down arrow keys on the adjusters when you VO-Right
arrow past the text field inputs.

You can also edit pronunciation by choosing the Pronunciation tab of
the Speech options in VoiceOver Utility. Use either VO-Right Arrow
from the Voices tab or item chooser menu (VO-I) and type t a b to
navigate to the Pronunciation tab, then return. VO-Space on the tab
to select it. VO-Right arrow and interact with the table for examples
of text words or phrases and the substituted pronunciation. To add a
pronunciation fix, stop interacting with the table and VO-Right to the
Add button and press (VO-Space). A pronunciation dialog window will
come up, with prompts for you to enter the text you wish to edit and
the new pronunciation, along with the group categories/applications in
which you wish this to be used. There are buttons to play, cancel
or save that will close the dialog window. When you're finished,
use Command-W to close the VoiceOver Utility window.

hey Peninnah
welcome to the wonderful world of Mac!!! I grew up on windows too and
didn't find it too hard to adjust. when you're learning, try to throw
away a lot of what you learned about windows and pretend this is the
first computer you've ever used. some stuff is the same, but a lot of
it is different and it helps when you're not thinking well, I did this
on windows...
I'm not totally sure about your iPod nano, I've only used mine with my
mac. but I assume you'd have to start over cuz you'd be using a
different iTunes library? unless your library is on an external drive?
hmmm. I'm sure someone else can answer those questions better. but for
sure, when you sync it up, it will use whatever the system voice on
your mac is. mine uses Alex and I wouldn't have it any other way!!

I'm using the latest version of VLC player which works very well with
Voiceover. I haven't found any inaccessible features in VLC Player yet.
Regarding Eyetv, it's not 100% accessible. I'm able to select the different

Re: Changing voice of login window

2009-04-06 Thread Esther
Hi Scott and Pierre,

I remember that with the Leopard upgrade the default voice (until you
actually finished the upgrade) was Fred. I've only used the different
voice options earlier with VisioVoice (in French) and Tiger, and I
don't run my Leopard account with a different language localization.
Tiger's support was more restrictive. I thought that you could boot
up your system in Leopard starting with another voice, but I haven't
tried this myself. I guess my question to Pierre would first be
whether the computer was set up with a default localization in German
(for the system, not just his account)?

Anne would probably know whether a startup from scratch works with a
voice other than Alex based on her experience with the French
VoiceOver mailing list that she moderates. Other than that, David
Niemeijer at Assistiveware could probably tell you whether this is
possible for a German login voice. You could send a query to:

supp...@assistiveware.com

or else send a post to the Assistiveware forums. David reads this
list, but a direct email will be faster.

To change the voice (for example, to Klaus or Sarah from the
Infovox iVox German voices), bring up the VoiceOver utility with VO-
F8, press 's' to select Speech in the table of utility
categories, then tab to the pane for setting voices. You'll hear
Voices, selected tab 1 of 2. You can select and choose settings
for the Voice you use for Default Voice, Content, Status, Type,
Attributes, and VoiceOver menu announcements. VO-Right arrow to
the pop up buttons beside each category and press (VO-Space), then
use arrow keys and letters to select your voice from all the
available options. VO-Right arrow to set default rate, pitch, and
volume for each voice. You can do this either by typing a number
between 1 and 100 in the text field or by using your up and down
arrow keys on the adjusters when you VO-Right arrow past the text
 field inputs.

You can also edit pronunciation by choosing the Pronunciation tab
of the Speech options in VoiceOver Utility. Use either VO-Right
Arrow from the Voices tab or item chooser menu (VO-I) and type t a
b to navigate to the Pronunciation tab, then return. VO-Space on
the tab to select it. VO-Right arrow and interact with the table
for examples of text words or phrases and the substituted
pronunciation. To add a pronunciation fix, stop interacting with
the table and VO-Right to the Add button and press (VO-Space). A
pronunciation dialog window will come up, with prompts for you to
enter the text you wish to edit and the new pronunciation, along
with the group categories/applications in which you wish this to be
used. There are buttons to play, cancel or save that will
close the dialog window. When you're finished, use Command-W to
 close the VoiceOver Utility window.

 Cheers,

 Esther

Re: Vlc and eye tv question once again.

2009-04-06 Thread Jesper Holten

Hi.
What will be my setup as it looks now:
Imac 24
FIREDtV firewire external digital tv reciever that hooks up to my cable
provider using db c codec.

software might be eyetv 3 either as stand alone, or in conjunction with
front row via Pye tv plugin.
I plan to connect the imac to my hifi setup through the digital optical
output via tosslink, or maybe USB to an Hegel h100 stereo high-end
amplifier, and wall mounted speakers.
In the future Sonos or squeezebox and a nas server may be part of the
equation.

Any other suggestions would be greatly apreciated!

Ps. I have ordered but not yet gotten my Imac! So I am waiting anxiously for
the beast to arrive
Best,
Jesper.

TweetDeck is utterly unuseable with VoiceOver. Not only is the Adobe AIR

RE: Installing Leopard on a Netbook

room for the other necessities - and I carry a small purse!

Well (as has been said) I think the Air is sort of a hybrid attempt
at that market, which I like. I love the Air's form factor but still
prefer my lil MB! For me, if the Air were smaller, I'd be much more
likely to consider purchasing one. I love the way they look, but
they're just too darned big for my tastes! lol!

I definitely see Apple's side of things in terms of their reluctance
to delve into the 'netbook' market, however, this trend is so large at
the moment, that it's just a shame they're not really there. I would
sooo prefer a small device running full-on OSX! (or even some flavor
of it) This is one reason I so very much want an IPhone. I really
would like a flavor of OSX that I can put in my purse.

Don't get me wrong, I love having an accessible phone, but there's
only so much Windows Mobile I can take! lol! So OSX (on a small
device IPhone or netbook) would sure be a welcome addition to the
market in my opinion.

Anyway, great discussion!. Have an awesome day All!.

Re: just got my mac today

2009-04-06 Thread Jessi Rathwell

I found that too. they really do. and I like that you really only need
to know a few commands before you can pretty much use it. and it works
the same in every program. you don't have to worry about routing the
jaws cursor to the pc cursor in this or that place. even the voiceover
cursor seems to make more sense than the jaws cursor. I've been really
impressed over the past year!!! there are still a few things that
windows handles better, but apple is really rising to the challenge
and I can't even remember the last time I booted up my windows pc.

 blind

 hey Peninnah
welcome to the wonderful world of Mac!!! I grew up on windows too and
didn't find it too hard to adjust. when you're learning, try to throw
away a lot of what you learned about windows and pretend this is the
first computer you've ever used. some stuff is the same, but a lot of
it is different and it helps when you're not thinking well, I did
 this
 on windows...
I'm not totally sure about your iPod nano, I've only used mine with
 my
mac. but I assume you'd have to start over cuz you'd be using a
different iTunes library? unless your library is on an external
 drive?
hmmm. I'm sure someone else can answer those questions better. but
 for
sure, when you sync it up, it will use whatever the system voice on
your mac is. mine uses Alex and I wouldn't have it any other way!!

Cara and others - I have a NetBook with Leopard installed. It's trimmed
down, Leopard that is. However, I'm using SlingPlayer, TextEdit, Safari,
etc. I'm using the Dell Mini9. It's my favorite computer, especially for
entertainment, surfing, etc. And my braille display works great with it,
should I want that addition. And, Cara, the NetBook fits in my small to
medium-sized purse! I had to do a presentation on a Vista machine at work
today, and did not enjoy traveling with my Inspiron 1525 - smile! As for
Mac, I hear tell that it's NetBook is going to be touch screen - not at all
useful ... so you may have to wait for that iPhone!

Thanks so much for this wonderful post. In what ways is it trimmd
down? Is it something you notice or more on the technical end. Btw,
I bought the Acer Aspire One (model AOA150-1635 Safire blue)
Here's a very good review of it though it does have constant images.

This and the general specs might be able to tell you if Leopard can be
installed on it. In any case, for $299 and with so many positive

6-cell (or 9-cell if there really is such a thing) battery and I
