Re: I have an Itunes question

2009-04-08 Thread Darcy Burnard

Hi Peggy. The ipod sync is complete message is near the top of the
window. If you go to the top of the window, and move past the
previous, play and next buttons, you should find it. You may see it
on its own, or you might see it inside the LCD area. If you interact
with this area, you'll see the syncing progress.

Creating Stacks with VO...

2009-04-08 Thread Mike

Hi all:

Is there a way to create what Apple refers to Stacks, I think which
are folders, on the doc, using VO?
For the sighted side, all I think you do is move the mouse over the
folder and hold down the mouse until a menu appears.
Don't know if you do something similar using VO.

For Josh Delioncourt,
an Idea for the next round table.
Maybe take a look at some VO friendly P2P file sharing programs like
Lime Wire or something similar.
Not sure what's out there but I know LW doesn't work.

Re: making bookshare books into audio/Daisy books?

2009-04-08 Thread kaare dehard

there are some that find that vo is somehow objectionable just because
it sort of broke a few rules that folks thought were inviolate. If
something is done well very little scripting should be needed etc.

Apple really put it's thinking cap on when design was started and it
shows. Of course we could use some improvements.

Cool! I'll have to try this. Otherwise, I was thinking of getting the BRF,
using Louis to make text and then automater to make audio. Between that Perl
script and the pipeline, now things should work better than when I last
explored this before on Windows. I'm glad I just dived straight in as VO

 Hi:

I just got my macbook today so I will probably be pestering you
 guys
 with
questions over the next week or so as I learn. I am totally
 new
 to
 the Mac
coming from the windows environment so this is a real change
 for
 me. I am
really glad this list is here and that you guys are so patient
 with
 us new
 folks.

There is one thing I have been wondering about already. I have
 an
 Ipod nano
four and had it with my windows computer and Itunes. I want to
 use
 it with
my Mac and was wondering if I will need to dump everything off
 it
 and start
over or not? also I have the voices enabled and was wondering
 what
 will
 happen when I switch?
Thanks again you guys for being here for me.

making bookshare books into audio/Daisy books?

2009-04-08 Thread Brent Harding

Hi there. I'm kind of a new user and just got a Macbook off Ebay a few weeks
ago. I tried to install DTBMaker to try and convert some Bookshare books
into audio with the Alex voice to eventually put on my Victor Stream. I
don't care for the voices built into the stream for long-term reading and
wanted to use the better voice this machine has. What do I need to install
to make it not give the command not found error when you hit the option to
start building the book? Do I need to install the Cepstral silence voice,
lame some how, and whatever perl modules? I know it's not quite Linux so I'm
not sure how to do that part even though the terminal seems to read good
with VO.

Thanks.

Re: just got my mac today

2009-04-08 Thread Brent Harding

I think that's in the adium preferences. You have to hit the events button
and add speak events to everything you want spoken. I never knew about that
when I got this Macbook I got off Ebay. The only thing I'm wondering is how
I get rid of the ugly picture I took on the setup assistant. I thought it
was a bug as it kept saying busy until I hit take video snapshot and I was
in no condition to want to take a picture of myself, but I thought nobody
would ever see it anyway, but it's now default on my MSN.

Re: just got my mac today

2009-04-08 Thread Mark Baxter

I agree that this is a bit lugubrious. One thing you can do,
especially if you're going to stay in that chat window for a while and
not want to navigate outside the application, is to turn off cursor
tracking, with VO Shift F3. The first time you start typing, your
edit point and mouse cursor will move into the text window, but your
VO cursor will stay in the HTML content window. Now, all you have to
do the next time something comes in is to VO right arrow once to hear
it. Just remember to turn cursor tracking back on again if you \
outside this chat window, with another toggle of VO Shift F3.

I have an Itunes question

2009-04-08 Thread Peggy Fleischer

Hi Again,

I've run in to a bit of a problem with Itunes. I need to know how to
hear the message that tells you if your sync is complete. I had no
problem with this in windows but can't find where it is on my Mac.
I'm a nervous reck now because about ten minutes ago I crashed my
Ipod. It went totally dead. I was in tears about it but finally my
husband figured out how to reset it.
I really appreciate all the wonderful help.

interacting with the events table. It's a bit comple, but it is
manageable. Hth,

Re: Installing Leopard on a Netbook

2009-04-08 Thread ben mustill-rose

Its worth noting now that the atoms are the slower cpu's for netbooks;
indications are that via's cpu is better unless your watching video.
Having said this, I wouldn't swap my nc10 with its atom for anything atm.

Well (as has been said) I think the Air is sort of a hybrid attempt
at that market, which I like. I love the Air's form factor but still
prefer my lil MB! For me, if the Air were smaller, I'd be much more
likely to consider purchasing one. I love the way they look, but
they're just too darned big for my tastes!  lol!

I definitely see Apple's side of things in terms of their reluctance
to delve into the 'netbook' market, however, this trend is so large
 at
the moment, that it's just a shame they're not really there. I would
sooo prefer a small device running full-on OSX! (or even some flavor
of it) This is one reason I so very much want an IPhone. I really
would like a flavor of OSX that I can put in my purse.

Don't get me wrong, I love having an accessible phone, but there's
only so much Windows Mobile I can take!  lol!  So OSX (on a small
device IPhone or netbook) would sure be a welcome addition to the
 market in my opinion.

Anyway, great discussion!. Have an awesome day All!.

 Smiles,

 Cara  :)

That's precisely what I did with my 20 + gig music collection;
transferred it via my WIFI network from my windows to my Mac, then

Thank you Mark and everyone else that gave me answers for Skype.

I am continuing to be amazed at how much simpler things are on the
Mac. The only challenge I have had is with my Ipod and that is because

all my files over my network from my windows computer and am now
working on importing them into the Itunes on my Mac. Time consuming

Re: Changing voice of login window

2009-04-08 Thread Pierre Heim
Good evening folks,

I understood the last post of Anne this way that the system voice you set in
speech preverences is also active for the login window. In order to check if
the problem is the Infovox voice I set Bruce to test this. So I restarted VO
and logout/login and restarted but always the same result: Alex is still
present and after login hte voices from the VO utility settings became active.
Is this the correct behaviour or is something wrong here?

Hi Scott and Pierre,

I remember that with the Leopard upgrade the default voice (until you
actually finished the upgrade) was Fred. I've only used the different voice
options earlier with VisioVoice (in French) and Tiger, and I don't run my
Leopard account with a different language localization. Tiger's support was
more restrictive. I thought that you could boot up your system in Leopard
starting with another voice, but I haven't tried this myself. I guess my
question to Pierre would first be whether the computer was set up with a
default localization in German (for the system, not just his account)?

Anne would probably know whether a startup from scratch works with a voice
other than Alex based on her experience with the French VoiceOver mailing list
that she moderates. Other than that, David Niemeijer at Assistiveware could
probably tell you whether this is possible for a German login voice. You could
send a query to:

supp...@assistiveware.com

or else send a post to the Assistiveware forums. David reads this list,
but a direct email will be faster.

To change the voice (for example, to Klaus or Sarah from the Infovox
iVox German voices), bring up the VoiceOver utility with VO-F8, press 's' to
select "Speech" in the table of utility categories, then tab to the pane for
setting voices. You'll hear "Voices, selected tab 1 of 2". You can select and
choose settings for the Voice you use for Default Voice, Content, Status, Type,
Attributes, and VoiceOver menu announcements. VO-Right arrow to the pop up
buttons beside each category and press (VO-Space), then use arrow keys and
letters to select your voice from all the available options. VO-Right arrow to
set default rate, pitch, and volume for each voice. You can do this either by
typing a number between 1 and 100 in the text field or by using your up and
down arrow keys on the adjusters when you VO-Right arrow past the text field
inputs.

You can also edit pronunciation by choosing the Pronunciation tab of
the Speech options in VoiceOver Utility. Use either VO-Right Arrow from the
Voices tab or item chooser menu (VO-I) and type "t a b" to navigate to the
Pronunciation tab, then return. VO-Space on the tab to select it. VO-Right
arrow and interact with the table for examples of text words or phrases and the
substituted pronunciation. To add a pronunciation fix, stop interacting with
the table and VO-Right to the "Add" button and press (VO-Space). A
pronunciation dialog window will come up, with prompts for you to enter the
text you wish to edit and the new pronunciation, along with the group
categories/applications in which you wish this to be used. There are buttons to
"play", "cancel" or "save" that will close the dialog window. When you're
finished, use Command-W to close the VoiceOver Utility window.

Re: Installing Leopard on a Netbook

2009-04-08 Thread Jane Lee

Alex -
The netbooks right now are pretty much priced the same for similar
specifications. If you're buying now, then all you'd need to do is
find a netbook on sale on a site like woot.com or coupons or similar
to save money.

On the other hand, I know Intel just started shipping their new Atoms,
which won't really give you a performance boost except in graphics
performance, where they're talking about netbooks powerful enough to
play HD content. I don't know if that's something that would be of
interest to you, but that's possibly the only thing on the horizon
(other than windows 7) that would interest prospective netbook buyers.

That being said, if you're wanting to run Leopard on a netbook model
that was just released or that is soon to be released on something new
like the new Atoms, don't hold your breath. I just bought an HP mini
1000 yesterday, it's not terribly new since it's from November last
year but not old either, and everyone trying to install osx86 on it
can't get sound or ethernet working.

cheers,
jane

Re: SKYPE QUESTION

2009-04-08 Thread Mark Baxter

Peggy:
If you use VO right arrow to navigate through the Skype window, often
you will come to the "answer button," and "decline button." VO space
bar, a click, in other words, on this button will press them. If you
don't find that while navigating in Skype, press command grave accent
to go to the other window open within the Skype application.
Sometimes the calling window doesn't seem to jump to the foreground
for Voiceover, I've noticed. Let me know if I can be of further
assistance.

In answer to your question - In what ways is it trimmed
down? Is it something you notice or more on the technical end.
Trim down is more on the technical end. I really haven't noticed any slow down.
I am using the solid state 8 gig drive and accessing downloads with a 16GB SD

Re: need ocr for epson vx30/300 scanner

2009-04-08 Thread Mark Baxter

Hi. I got a lot of help with this myself, so will pass some of it
forward. The program usually used for scanning and/or OCR on the Mac
seems to be Vuescan. You'll need drivers for the Mac for your
scanner, if you don't already have them installed. Download and
install Vuescan, and also a program called ReadIris. I never got as
far as ReadIris, because I could never find a free download link for
it, but apparently its OCR is superior to Vuescan. Vuescan would
probably do well enough for every-day tasks like reading mail and so
on, but there's no page orientation and not much in the way of dynamic
control, so it appeared to me. Let me know if I can help, or at least
share with us how you're doing with it. :)

Re: SKYPE QUESTION

2009-04-08 Thread chantel cuddemi

If you click on the answer button, it will answer the call . When an
incoming call comes, you will see three buttons, the first being the
answer button, and the others the decine button and the chat button.
Click on the answer button to answer the call, and if you want to
reject the call, hit the decline button.

Hi there,
I don't know about a list of keyboard commands (I'd be curious
about that too), but I do know that when a call comes in it's in a
different window that you need to navigate to. Go to the window
chooser menu with VO + F2 (hold down control and option and hit F2
twice quickly), and choose the window titled something like incoming
call. You'll find an answer call button there that you can select. I
hope this helps for now, and perhaps there's a faster way that someone
else will know.

need ocr for epson vx30/300 scanner

2009-04-08 Thread christos hux

Hi to the list. I just purchased a Epson flatbed scanner model vx30
because of its low cost compared to other scanners. I wanted one that
was affordable to scan my mail.
The only kind of ocr software that came with it is the Abby Fine
Reader version 5. It is not very useable in my view and to upgrade to
the newist version which is 9.0 is just a windows only version.
Anybody out there know if I can use this in my view useless fine
reader as a upgrade path to Omnipage pro x ? When I went and looked at
the iris web page for iris readit pro 11 version to purchase it it
only tells you that this is a upgrade purchase. So I guess if you do
not have a earlier version of readit this is not going to work? I
really need help in finding a good voice over working ocr program for
the Mac. Before anyone suggest I do know about kurzweil 3000 for the
mac since I was a early version 1 tester. Most of the really nice
early mac kurzweil folks back when Kurzweil was not part of anyother
company they were very nice and helpful. I do not have any contacts
anymore inside the company and the program has a lot of non blind user
stuff. It would be a super help if that free mac ocr program was
avilable right now until sometime this summer. Sorry for the long
posting to the list.

website building on the Mac?

2009-04-08 Thread Eliza Cooper

Hi list,
I'm taking on a new long-term project/hobby and learning how to
code so that I can start my own website. I'm a definite novice and am
experimenting with html in notepad on the windows side of my Mac. Can
you use TextEdit to do the same thing (i.e., write code and see the
finished product by launching the file when Safari is open)? If
someone who has created their own site is willing, could they write me
off-list? I'd also love advice on what web hosting service to use,
but that's off topic.
Thanks,
Eliza
