Re: some general question

2010-10-01 Thread GEOFF WAALER
Hello Robert,

I too am just getting started, but can take a stab at a couple of your
questions:

Control+Option+shift+m brings up a context menu. Alternatively you may want to
set up a command for this on the trackpad commander.

You can quickly ascertain the time by double tapping with two fingers near the
top of the trackpad and then tap with one finger near the upper right corner.

I'll defer to others to cover your remaining questions.

 1. Open addressbook and select the contact you want to edit.
 2. Once you find the name of the contact, hit VO shift M.
 3. Arrow down to edit and hit enter. You should be able to edit the

I have the same problem Kawal does on the Iphone. I think it's because I

I realize that some or even all of these questions may have been covered on
this list already, but as I am the recent recipient of a Macbook Pro, I have
come across a few things to which I would like some answers conveniently
placed in one message:
1. How do context menus work on the mac? So far, I have been routing mouse
to VO cursor and pressing CTRL+click. Is there a shortcut for this?
2. How do I get Voiceover to read the entire row of a table without first
navigating to it and pressing VO+r? The reason for this is I would like all
Mail message information spoken rather than just the date or subject line;
and I would like it to do so without excessive arrowing.
3. DOes there exist a way to quickly check status items such as the
date/time without first pressing ctrl+F8 and arrowing around the extras?
This isn't really a huge deal, I'm just wondering.
So far this computer is working out great and I am very satisfied. I have my
Ohio State University mail set up and it uses Exchange (which is awesome).
Could someone explain the process of mounting a hardware device? I know
this refers to connecting and making available a hardware device, but what
exactly is going on when such is happening?
Finally, as I am new to the Mac OsX platform, what are some suggested
programs in which I may consider investing time/money (word processors,
spreadsheets, general computer maintenance programs, archivers, audio
converters, anything of interest)?
So far I have had one day with my Mac and, although I still must rely on my

Not sure if this will help your problem, but have you tried turning

press this when in the chat window (not the edit box) and then press
VO+End if you want to be at the bottom of the chat window.

Re: 3 Questions for Snow Leopard Server Users

2010-10-01 Thread Esther

Hi Bryan,

I suggest that if you have questions about Snow Leopard Server that
you join the mac-access list. Last year the list owners completed
transitioning their entire operations to Mac servers, so they're
running Snow Leopard servers for their network services as well as
using the Mac with VoiceOver for their personal computing. I don't
know of any other sources with this same level of expertise in Mac
server operations using VoiceOver. (Also, Gordon Smith produced the
first really comprehensive podcast on Fusion and virtualization on the
Mac, along with how to do the installations over 3 years ago for ACB
Radio's Main Menu technology show.) Here's the link with information
to subscribe to the mac-access list:

1. Using VO, are you able to access all functions of SL Server from

3. If you're using SL Server as your client OS, do you experience

it slower due to additional services running?

Re: audiobooks

2010-10-01 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi, It's not something you should have to know or be required to fiddle with
just to listen to a book, but unlike most things in ITunes, this should
actually be easy.

Simply highlight all of your audiobook files in ITunes.
Press Command I.
Agree that yes you do want to edit multiple items.
Make sure you are in the info tab.
Check the genre checkbox, and type audiobooks in the edit box.
Hit the OK button and in a few seconds you will hear the success bells.

Hope this helps,

I don't think it matters how many files your book is. Your Ipod should
recognize each set of files as an audiobook as long as they are all tagged
properly. There should be no need to switch formats.

 Hope this helps.

Re: some general question

Hi Paul,

it really just is a control-click. It means, hold down the control key and hit
the mouse button. Basically, press down on the trackpad. Of course, the mouse
has to be focussed on the item you want to click first, and in some instances,
you actually can't use the VOiceOVer keystroke for this in which case you will
have to use this method.

I realize that some or even all of these questions may have been covered on
this list already, but as I am the recent recipient of a Macbook Pro, I have
come across a few things to which I would like some answers conveniently
 placed in one message:
 1. How do context menus work on the mac? So far, I have been routing mouse to
VO cursor and pressing CTRL+click. Is there a shortcut for this?
 2. How do I get Voiceover to read the entire row of a table without first
navigating to it and pressing VO+r? The reason for this is I would like all
 Mail message information spoken rather than just the date or subject line;
and I would like it to do so without excessive arrowing.
 3. DOes there exist a way to quickly check status items such as the date/time
without first pressing ctrl+F8 and arrowing around the extras? This isn't
really a huge deal, I'm just wondering.
So far I have had one day with my Mac and, although I still must rely on my
dell for important work while I learn the platform, I can easily envision
myself straying further and further from WIndows as time progresses. I am
glad this list exists, as it is a definitive and helpful community regarding

is the default), but if you plan to install more than one language pack, you
should change the selection to either Mass Storage or Memory Card.
Continue to press the Left-Select key to confirm the remaining prompt messages.
Once the installation is complete, repeat the installation steps above with
the language pack file that will be the user language, and again for the
on-phone documentation pack. Make sure to install the language and
documentation packs to the same location as the executable, either in the phone
memory, mass storage or memory card, depending on your phone model. Repeat
these steps again for each additional language pack you install, as well as the
documentation pack file.
12. After installing the Mobile Reader and language pack or packs, you must
activate the software. Turn the phone off, and then turn it back on so that
the main screen appears with the time and date. If the bottom left of the
phone screen says Reader, Talks or Mobile Speak will say Key 1 Reader, your
phone has been pre-configured to launch the Reader with Left Selection key. If
not, you can configure a shortcut yourself by using the phone's
Personalization options; refer to the user manual for your phone model on our
phone information page. The instructions below assume that the shortcut is set
to the Left Selection key.
Open the Reader application by pressing the Left-Select key while on the main
screen and you will be presented with a message asking you to activate the
software. If you do not have this shortcut, press the Menu key and navigate to
the Applications folder. On the 6220 Classic, select the My Own folder within
Applications. Navigate to the Reader icon and press the Select key to open it.
13. The Reader application will ask you to press the Left-Select key, in order
to continue activation. Then, you can press the down button to hear the
software code, and you can have it repeated as many times as you like by
pressing the right directional button. Go back to the web browser on your
computer with the page where you can download the Mobile Reader files (refer to
steps 2,3 and 4). Select the Next button at the bottom of this page and then
you will be prompted to enter a software code. Enter the software code from
your Reader into the field on the web page and select the Finish button.
14. The web page will provide you with an Activation code which is a string of
numbers. Enter this Activation code into your Reader

The reason for this is I would like all
 Mail message information spoken rather than just the date or subject line;
and I would like it to do so without excessive arrowing.
 3. DOes there exist a way to quickly check status items such as the date/time
without first pressing ctrl+F8 and arrowing around the extras? This isn't
really a huge deal, I'm just wondering.
So far I have had one day with my Mac and, although I still must rely on my
dell for important work while I learn the platform, I can easily envision
myself straying further and further from WIndows as time progresses. I am
glad this list exists, as it is a definitive and helpful community regarding

Tim and others, thanks for your fantastic help. I have a couple more questions
if I may? If I tab at the beginning of a paragraph, do I get the usual 5 space

Maybe I won't have to reach for that nasty windows machine next time after all.

the ok button and press vo+space bar again and thats it!
Of corse you will have to change it again to import!

Thanks for this Ester. It really helps! :)
On Sep 29, 2010, at 2:44 PM, Esther wrote:

Hi Justin, Tim, Kimberly, and Others,

I'd just like to add that after setting up fonts and line spacing in TextEdit
you can simply save this setup as you own style file. Interact with the
Styles pop up button in the ruler and select Other. Then press the Add
to favorites button and supply a name for the style. You can check the boxes
for Include the ruler as part of the style and include the font as part of
the style. To use one of your saved style files when you open a new
TextEdit window, first ensure that your window is set to rich text format
(you can switch to this from the View menu), then choose the template from
the pop up Styles button in the ruler. This will automatically set your
page to the line spacing, font type, and alignment options that you set up
 for this style.

Actually, I think that another simple way to set up a style file would be to
simply import something like a Word document in the format you want (double
spaced, and with a particular font) into TextEdit in rich text format, then
save it as a specified style. I haven't done much with this lately, but I
looked up a set of December 2008 posts I made in the old macvisionaries list
archives that specified how to do this for someone who wanted to set up a
 letter template in TextEdit.

Low vision users who use TextEdit in rich text mode can set quite large fonts
 as their default font style.

Also, in response to Sarah's question in this thread about when a ruler
appears in TextEdit, she's correct that the ruler is a feature of the rich
text format documents and does not appear in plain text documents.

Re: XCode compile.

2010-10-01 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Geoff,

My understanding is that whilst you are able to code in xcode, running
the program in the iPhone simulator will not be accessible. The
suggested workaround is to sign up to the developer program, although
$100 does seem a little bit steep to here vo say hello world.

If you have jailbroken your phone however, I'm fairly sure that you
would be able to put it onto the iPhone without having to pay apple.

The ipa's (applications) that are on your phone are all signed y
apple. Once you sign up to the program, I'm assuming apple will sign
your ipa's there by allowing them onto your phone. However, if you
have jailbroken, you can install an app called AppSync which will let
your phone run unsigned ipa's.

Sorry it's not the exact answer; I just thought I'd let you know about
what you might encounter before you start.

Using Drag and Drop in VoiceOver

2010-10-01 Thread Paul Hunt
Hello everyone. I would like to use the drag and drop feature to copy an
address book card to an envelope in the envelope template of Pages. Does
Drag and Drop work? If so, what is the procedure. If not, is there a
keyboard work around?

Thanks so much.

Re: itunes question

2010-10-01 Thread Scott Howell
Liam,

If you want to skip back/forward through a track, hold down command and option
and use the left/right arrow keys. To skip from one track to another, use the
left/right arrow keys. Of course keep in mind if you have quicknav active,
these commands will not work.

Hi!

Just a correction.

Quick Nav is only used if you are using the arrow keys without any other keys
when it is turned on.

Huh, Nic you are correct. I did make an error. If quicknav is on, you can still
change tracks and move about in the track. Should not reply to messages when my
brain is not fully engaged. :)
