No, I said turning UP the volume. After you press the call button to make the

Re: Pondering the switch to a Mac (blind but with residual vision)

2010-10-09 Thread David Goodwin

Hi Esther,

Thanks for the information about Nocturne. It looks like it might
address some of the issues I saw with the Mac's colour inversion
feature. I noticed the very first item they had in a list of feature
requests was the ability to disable inverted screen on videos and/or
images. That feature alone would dramatically improve things.

Having now weighed up the various pros and cons, I now have a Mac Mini
reserved at a local store. There's still time for me to change my mind,
but the signs certainly suggest the switch is now on!

Hi Donna I've had to send this again because I mucked it up the first time!
Oh well it's practice for me!
slight amendment to the first message!

If you use the vo command version when you are done it looks like you need to
 press escape to come out!
However It looks like your feelings about zoom in the menu was right!
You have 2 choices you can go to the menu bar and get to zoom and just
vo+space bar on that or stop interacting with the text scroll area and left
arrow to a zoom button and vo+space bar there instead, this should achieve
 what you want! :]

Re: sendero look around update

Hi.

I have the Look around App installed and have selected the UK Europe location.
However whenever I use this App, it keeps coming up with the compass
interference and it won't let me do anything else. Could you pass it on to the
list that you are on? I'm on the GEO users list but don't know if that list
will accept anything like this. I'm using an Iphone 4.

Sendero GPS LookAround, Version 1.1 Documentation
Sendero GPS LookAround for the iPhone is available in the app store. It
works with the iPhone 3GS and higher. It will not function with the iPod. No
telephone support is available from Sendero Group. There is no turn-by-turn
navigation information in Sendero LookAround for the iPhone. There are 5
applications powered by Sendero GPS on other platforms, which have
comprehensive navigation features. For information on these products, visit
 http://www.AccessibleGPS.com
 To use Sendero GPS LookAround:
Touch the Sendero GPS icon to launch the application. You will be presented
with a disclaimer. Touch the OK Button to accept the disclaimer. Also, touch
the OK Button when asked if it is ok to use your current location. If there
is compass interference, you may find that touching the OK button does not
work at first. Read the screen to see if there is an error message. Wave the
phone in a figure eight motion to clear the compass message if necessary.
To receive the LookAround information, shake the iPhone until you feel a
vibration and hear a swishing sound. It may take from 5 to 30 seconds
depending on the point of interest data location. The swish will give you a
progress indication every 3 seconds. Once you move positions and want to
Look around again, shake the iPhone to receive new information. Remember
when you press Home and leave the application and then launch it again, the
previous information may still be on the screen. Shake again to get new
 information.
If you don't hear anything several seconds after shaking the phone, touch
the top of the screen to hear what is being displayed. Perhaps the
information wasn't spoken, the request timed out or there is no GPS
position, in which case you may hear, Limited position data. Change
 location and try again.
Once you have launched Sendero GPS LookAround, a shake of the iPhone will
cause LookAround to display the current Heading, street, city, cross street
and nearest point of interest based on the POI category you have chosen
under settings. It defaults to the Restaurant category. Note the Variety
category is a combination of 8 categories containing the letter E such as
restaurant and hotel. Searching 8 categories at once may cause the app to
 time-out more frequently.
The main screen is laid out with output text displayed toward the top of the
screen with 3 long buttons in the lower half of the screen, one above the
other. There are 5 small buttons evenly spaced across the bottom of the
screen. Don't tap too hard when activating these buttons as you may trigger
 the iPhone shake feature.
 The 3 main buttons are:
 1. Where Am I button:
The first long button is the Where Am I button, which announces heading,
nearest address and city. You receive a vibration and beep after activating
 it.
The LookAround software makes its best guess as to which street you are on
and which is the cross street. Many positioning factors go into whether this
information is correct. This may be particularly problematic if you are
inside or among tall buildings. This is because of your distance away from
the street and because the positioning indoors is worse than it is outdoors
 and out in the open.
 2. Nearest Cross Street Button:
This is the second of the 3 long buttons. It announces the nearest street
and cross street. Again, this refers to the nearest street and not
necessarily the one ahead in your direction of travel. If you are at an
intersection, it is common for GPS systems to get confused as to which
street you are on versus which one is the cross street. A vibration and beep
will confirm that you activated this button.
 3. Nearest 5 Points of Interest button:
Whereas the Shake gives you the nearest single point of interest, this POI
button displays up to 5 nearby points of interest in the category you choose
under Settings. The search goes out to 2 kilometers, 1.24 miles. These
points are based on proximity, 360 degrees around you. A vibration and beep
 will confirm that

Re: selecting a part of a track in amadeus pro

2010-10-09 Thread Kevin Reeves
Also, in the preferences, make sure that spacebar rewinds play head is checked.
Reason being is that when you hit stop, the play head will always go back to
where the insertion point is. By default, the spacebar acts as pause, which is
extremely annoying when trying to pinpoint a spot to begin your edit. Note
however that when using the arrow keys while playing only moves the playhead
and not the insertion point. So if you are playing and using the arrow keys to
audibly scrub through a track and you hit stop, the playhead will jump back to
the beginning of the file. The most practical way to do this is to use the
right and left arrows while the file is stopped, hit play every so often to
audition your spot, and make your selection when you've found it. This is more
like how Soundforge and goldwave worked on the windows platform. I hope this is
of assistance to you. I'm sure I'm missing some stuff, as I am very new at
using the program, so I encourage anyone to chime in and add to this. Hope that
helps.

individual files can be recoered from Time machine backups

2010-10-09 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Just thought I'd post this, as I thought perhaps it might be useful to know.

If memory serves, someone here was asking about recovery of individual folders
or files from Time machine backups. This person, if I recall correctly, did
not want to restore their entire system back to any particular time, but
rather, just wanted to retrieve certain files and or folders. Some of us were
speculating this could be done; while, others, were doubtful. Well, Now, I'm
here to tell you that, in fact, yes, it can be done.

Just the other night, I did a full Time Machine backup to October 4th; but
then, I realized that I had files which I had created for more recent backups
but which I wanted back. Of course, when I did the Time machine restoration,
those files got erased from my main hard drive. I manually went in to my Time
Machine disk and selected a more recent backup and opened it. There, I saw an
image of the drive exactly as it had recently ben. From that point, I was able
to navigate to the files I wanted, and then, cut and paste them in to the
places I needed them to be.

When I went to open the files, I found I could in fact do so. Just for the
sake of being doubly sure, I disconnected my Time Machine backup disk from my
Mac and tried again. sure enough, there were the files I retrieved; and, I
could in fact open and manipulate them.

Just thought I'd let y'all know.

Re: individual files can be recoered from Time machine backups

2010-10-09 Thread Mary Otten
Ray,
When you say you went into your time machine disk, did you do that via time
machine itself? Or did you access the disk directly without going through TM? I
ask because, while I did manage to recover a specific folder a while back, it
took sighted help to do so, as going via time machine, that is, accessing the
enter time machine item from the tm menu didn't seem to work well for me with
vo. I couldn't access a specific back up or specific files. As memory serves,
when my sighted spouse did the restoration, he first navigated on the Mac hard
drive to the folder to be restored, then opened tm and went from there. I am
fuzzy as to the steps. So if you can give a bit more step by step on how you
did the restore, it would be helpful.

Re: individual files can be recoered from Time machine backups

2010-10-09 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Well, Mary,

I can assure you that you made much too much work for yourself. Here's all you
really need to do.

First, don't even think of using Time Machine to try this. It's got to be done
directly. By which, of course, I mean that you manually navigate to the disk
using the regular finder procedures which which you are already familuar. Once
you've opened the disk where your Time Machine backups are stored, (use command
O for this), you will noticed that there is a backups.upd folder. Inside this
folder, you will see an image of your Mac hard drive and it will be called what
ever your main hard drive is called. Open this. Inside, you will see all your
backups and the dates for each will be in numbered form. Each backup will be
an exact image of your Mac drive exactly as it was at the time of the backup
indicated. Open the backup you want to take folders or files from. Now, when
you navigate inside here, you will be already familuar with it because the
layout will appear exactly like your Mac drive. Just find what you want and
take it via the usual cut and paste method.

Uh oh, get ready to drink the coolade. You've made a good move if for nothing
else new gadgets are always a good thing and Apple is very good at gadgets.
Leaving blindness out of it, it's cool technology and cool technology is always
a good thing. Back on blindness it's nice that with Apple products you can
pick up just about any device and use it on a similar footing with sited users.
 Good move!

time, but rather, just wanted to retrieve certain files and or folders. Some
of us were speculating this could be done; while, others, were doubtful.
Well, Now, I'm here to tell you that, in fact, yes, it can be done.

Just the other night, I did a full Time Machine backup to October 4th; but
then, I realized that I had files which I had created for more recent backups
but which I wanted back. Of course, when I did the Time machine restoration,
those files got erased from my main hard drive. I manually went in to my
Time Machine disk and selected a more recent backup and opened it. There, I
saw an image of the drive exactly as it had recently ben. From that point, I
was able to navigate to the files I wanted, and then, cut and paste them in
to the places I needed them to be.

When I went to open the files, I found I could in fact do so. Just for the
sake of being doubly sure, I disconnected my Time Machine backup disk from my
Mac and tried again. sure enough, there were the files I retrieved; and, I
could in fact open and manipulate them.

Re: individual files can be recoered from Time machine backups

2010-10-09 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
You can access the files within your time machine if you mount the disk on the
left hand side you'll get the dates. If you press L for latest, then vo right,
you will see all your latest files. Then you find the file and copy rather
than cut and paste. When done, you can erraise the time machine and back your
Mac again how you want it. I bought a network cable so the whole process took
half an hour as I also had to restore a virtual windows 7 machine.

I ask because, while I did manage to recover a specific folder a while back,
it took sighted help to do so, as going via time machine, that is, accessing
the enter time machine item from the tm menu didn't seem to work well for
me with vo. I couldn't access a specific back up or specific files. As memory
serves, when my sighted spouse did the restoration, he first navigated on the
Mac hard drive to the folder to be restored, then opened tm and went from
there. I am fuzzy as to the steps. So if you can give a bit more step by step

Re: I think I may have made a $99 mistake...

2010-10-09 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
I've included the message below. I'm hoping that the jailbreak
community will inadvertantly make things better for us at some point.
  Larry Wanger lsw...@gmail.com 30 September 2010 23:00
I sent the following note to Apple Accessibility. No Voice Over on the
ATV and the remote app is rendered on the iPhone and iPad such that it
can not really be used either. Things will improve somewhat with
Airplay once implemented but not entirely. I hope others will consider
writing as well.

Hi,

I want to share my displeasure with Apple as I’ve just learned that
the new Apple TV product does not currently offer any kind of access
to blind and low vision television viewers through implementation of
Voice Over. I learned of this by calling and speaking with a sales
representative at Apple who checked with one of your engineers to find
out if accessibility features were built in to the product. Whether
Apple recognizes it or not, blind and low vision people enjoy watching
television and movies as well and Apple has unfortunately missed out
on an opportunity to continue to be a leader in this important area of
technology.

While I was somewhat surprised to learn the actual Apple TV box did
not offer Voice Over, I was even more surprised to learn that the
newly updated remote app fails to provide a meaningful solution. Had
Apple implemented the remote app for the ATV in the same way that it
has allowed end users to use Airtunes I suspect things would have been
different. Recall that the remote app essentially rendered the user’s
iTunes library, showing music, podcasts and other media content. The
user could scroll through content and choose what to play. Best of
all, Voice Over worked well with this app. A similar implementation
would have offered an accessible solution. Beyond this, my
understanding of the technical specifications of the ATV would
indicate that the box itself should have enough horse power to handle
the same implementation of Voice Over that we currently enjoy on other
Apple products.

I also would be remiss if I did not mention the recent passage and
pending presidential signing of the 21st Century Communications and
Video Accessibility Act. One of the provisions of this legislation is
the requirement for industry to develop set-top boxes that offer
accessibility features for blind and low vision users. While this has
happened after Apple developed this product, I mention it in hopes
that Apple will consider being a leader in this area by making its new
ATV accessible in the near future.

Please know that like so many others, I am very appreciative of
Apple’s efforts and leadership by including Voice Over on the iPhone,
iPad and other products. However, it seems that Voice Over could have
been implemented on this device as well. I look forward to being able
to purchase and use the new Apple TV in the future.

If I remember correctly, it's possible to use an Apple computer with
VoiceOver turned on to control an Apple TV box. You might send email to
accessibil...@apple.com and ask if this is the case or if an iPhone can be
used to do that just in case you haven't got an Apple computer. I'm
pretty sure they will answer a question like that. Sometimes in order to
solve a problem none of the doors can be used and it's a matter of finding
that secret panel and the passageway. On Sat, 9 Oct 2010, Ben Mustill-Rose

I've been trying to work with a website, to sign in, view weekly ads, etc.
I am getting all of nowhere, and it's a site I normally peruse with JFW and

properly. If anyone likes a challenge, could you please check out

Re: help! voiceover resetting when trying to go into a web pageI

2010-10-09 Thread Eric Oyen
yeah, it solved the reset when entering html content bug. However, I cannot
report any audio captchas on the yahoo site as working (no play).

in fact, I haven't checked anywhere outside of yahoo to see if any of the audio
captchas work. so, it *could* be a strictly yahoo problem.

Hello Ronald,
I found it under audio in voiceover help menu, but it's only a toggle. I
can't find the command for turning it on again. I once had this problem and
I solved it by going up and down that list in braille... Perhaps Anne
Robertson or Ester can help us out here.

Hi there!
If you think the sound preferences is still on sound [ which it should be
hopefully]
You can also try [ fn+option+f12] then tab 6 times and you should be on the
sounds mute check box, so vo+space bar and that should do it!
