I get very lost and confused in that app. I can't figure out things like how to save a radio station, subscribe or unsubscribe to a podcast, search for music in the iTunes store and then buy the music, etc. I am able to sync my iPhone and that's about all I am successful in doing. Re: My finder is busy and not responding.
you might have to put in the install disk, restart, turn on voiceover in that install session, then run disk utility and run the first aid on that disk. there is a possibility that you have a file corruption. I have had to do this at least once back when snow leopard first came out. it turned out to be a bug that was corrected in 10.6.3. also, if you can, have an apple rep either in person at your local apple store, or on the phone from apple tech support to help you. I am lucky I have an apple store here in arizona. they were very helpful in getting that problem squared away for me. -Eric On Dec 3, 2010, at 7:17 PM, Annie Skov Nielsen wrote: > Hi. > I have tried to force finder to quit, but the same problem appears when it > starts up again' > > Best regards Annie.aa > > Sendt fra min iPhone > > Den 04/12/2010 kl. 03.08 skrev Carolyn Haas : > >> Hi Anie: >> Go to your menu, under apple, arrow down to "force quit". Re: dvd play on the mac
Thanks Mike. I have to say, I never would have thought of hitting inter prior to looking in the "go" menu, which I had done without that crucial first step, to no avail. Hitting enter in the Mac environment doesn't often result in anything good, except activating some control you've gotten to with the tab, and since the window I was in wasn't saying anything through vo, it just never occurred to me that pressing enter would actually do something useful. The mac should work well for all of those things, and you won't need to pay extra to keep the screen reader up to date. Mac vs pc: accordin to Carolyng
Hello Rick: I am going to post something I wrote up for a friend of mine just last week who was asking a similar question.Actually, I'm posting the conversation for the sake of completeness. If you get borred, of course, you know where the DEL button is.:) This is strictly my opinion, but you may find something useful. Carolyn Haas - Original Message - From: Carolyn Sent: Sunday, November 28, 2010 11:40 AM Subject: Re: Mac Ok let's see. I'm going to put this out a little long-ways. Because, there's not an easy way to answer your questions. ITunes as you probably know, especially if you've worked with jTunes, is laid out in grid fashion, much like thw iPhone. When Jaws sees the screen, it sort of takes things and attempts to show them as listviews, or at best, collumns. It does this pretty darn well. Apple's system, on the other hand is based a lot on visual icons. So, on a mac, you have lots of pictures of things to go by, and again, there's the grid arrangement prominent. The mac OSX offers for one to view the screen with voiceover as it actually exists, much like the iPhone. So, you have the ability to begin to understand the layout of the actual screen as people see it. Voiceover development in my opinion is kind of in it's adolescence. It does an incredibly good job of offering you choices of how to explore the screen, and navigate. It works pretty much flawlessly with iTunes. You have the option to view your screen in Listview, icon mode or collumns. It's most common voice is that of "Alex." The synthesizer for Alex is interesting, and in some ways better than Eloquence in my humble opinion. Yet, at times, the speech is odd, as with any synthesized speech. For example, the word "thanks" to me, sounds like "thnx"f, and it will read for instance the name "Melissa" as "melissla ." Certainly not as bad as some of the ones in the 80's and 90's. It is an awesome step forward in terms of mainstreaming accessibility. I love my mac, and wouldn't give it up. Having said that, there are some inherent weaknesses. In Apple's infinite desire to tweek the geek, they update a lot. The constant updates tend to make for a little inconsistency in how things run. For example, the latest update to their internet browser, Safari has a lot of people experiencing issues with Voiceover anomalies Another weakness for me is the matter of scanning. The most widely recommended software for scanning with the Mac is Abbyy Fine Reader, which is an OCR program.(costing only around $100 vs what krzweil or openbook now cost).:)) So, you would need to capture the image then send it to Abbyy to process. It works well, but to me isn't efficient. The other top-runner for scanning is a program called Vuescan. This does both the scan and recognition, for only about $40. However, I haven't played with it enough to know whether it can understand page orientation and tell you if something's in upside down. Finally, the move from Windows to Mac is snot a small move. There are similarities, and a lot of people have made the jump fairly easily. Also, there is a lot more material out there now compared to just a year ago when I took the leap. More people to help too, including yours truly, who has taken forever to learn this stuff. The last thing I'll say is that a lot of people are embracing what Apple is doing because it's the beginning of an attempt to mainstream our access to the web and all that computers have to offer. Apple has built voiceover into the system, as opposed to companies like GW Micro and FS who have built programs to adapt the system. You won't be buying a mac laptop and then paying thousands of dollars every couple of years to update the screen reader, and more to update your scanner. Macs are also mostly well-built. So, they cost a little more at the outset. But, in the long run you're saving money. You also don't have the constant upkeep of expensive anti-virus windows software. You can also set up Windows to run on the mac machine to either help you with the switch-over or to get the benefits of both.e. Ok. I wanted to be thorough because it's a big decision, with a lot of variables. I'd hate for you to get a mac, thinking it's simple, and wind up struggling to do what needs done. I would suggest you take the time if you can and check out a Mac at an Apple store. You can, of ourse get them to turn on voiceover immediately, and run through a starter tutorial that will give you some sense of how it works. . - Original Message To: ch...@q.com Sent: Monday, November 29, 2010 10:30 AM Subject: Mac LaptopHi Carolyn, OK, I played a little bit with the voice over at the Apple store. Re: Usin sharp keys under vmware fusion.
Hi. I'll forward a post if you are to use jaws under VMware. As far as sharp keys goes, when you open sharp keys there are two list boxes. If I remember correctly (although it was more than 5 months ago since I did this) the first list box is where you have to pick the key you want to remap. So go into the first list box and tab until you get to choose a list of keys like special caps lock then tab to the next list box and remap that special caps lock to your accent key if you have a Mac Book Pro or jaws will not get an insert key. When you have done, then tab until you get to the register button and when you have remaped all that you want, restart the virtual machine again. Help using sharp keys.
Hi list. I am trying to use sharp keys to modify my keyboard within a virtual machine running windows XP. Is it possible to make it that my right command key to be an insert key so that I can give Jaws or NVDA commands? Also, is it possible to use the FN key along with letter keys such as m, j, k etc to have a virtual numpad? Any help is very much appreciated. VMWare Fusion and Bootcamp
Hi all, on my MacBook White is Fusion 2.X installed. As far as I know it should be possible to start my Bootcamp partition with Windows XP. But now the issue is: When I start the Bootcamp partition in Fusion Jaws doesn't work properly. Jaws doesn't read anything. It merely says empty when using the arrow keys.. When I try to restart my MacBook then under Bootcamp to work there with Windows, it takes always nearly half an hour to boot because Windows checkes the whole partition for hardware issues. Also my Jaws key was lost and I had to get a new key from my ILM. That cannot be the way how it should be, can it? What about your experiences with Fusion 2.x? Have I done something wrong? Thanks and best wishes Jürgen -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Usin sharp keys under vmware fusion.
Ok, I downloaded and installed sharp keys. For those who will want to do this you must install .net framework 2.0 before sharp keys. Now, how do I remap my right command key as the insert key? I am trying to activate the first "type key" button, but when I press the right command key the start menu comes up. I am sure I am missing something here. Please help. Changing the Order of Preferred Wireless Networks?
Hi all, I know that under system preferences/Airport/Advanced, there is a list of all the wireless networks ever connected to. You're supposed to be able to change the connection order of these networks by dragging the most preferred one to the top of the list, etc. I seem to remember there was a very easy VO command for manipulating these but I can't for the life of me recall the keystroke. Using both screen readers every day, I can safely say that you won't be disappointed should you decide to get a Mac. Tons of useful resources are out there to help you get up and running. iTunes: is there a good tutorial out there?
I have been limping along in iTunes, and it's now time to get serious about it. I get very lost and confused in that app. I can't figure out things like how to save a radio station, subscribe or unsubscribe to a podcast, search for music in the iTunes store and then buy the music, etc. I am able to sync my iPhone and that's about all I am successful in doing. Rather than take up tons of time and space on this list, is anyone aware of a tutorial I might purchase or have access to that will teach me iTunes in a reasonable and logical way? Thanks so much! Marlaina P.S. If anybody wants to give help here, that's ok as well; I just feel like I am asking a lot of questions and perhaps taking up too much list time and space on the things I want to learn. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: mac vs jfw
Hi Rick, JAWS and Voiceover perform well as screen readers. they work on different principles and comparing one to the other is like comparing a car to a motorcycle. Hi, Rick, The first thing to be aware of is that you have to throw all your Windows knowledge of keystrokes, etc. out the window and start from scratch. Re: something I'm contemplating
My son has one of these. there are occasional updates, but there are no apps. Also, I am fairly confident that the radio does not have voice over, so when using that you won't be able to have the radio tell you which freq. you are listening too. The size is quite small compared to my 5GB ipod classic First Gen... though it is still big enough to have a display and a "wheel". Jon On Nov 30, 2010, at 8:14 PM, Sarah Alawami wrote: > Yeah. No, as far as I know, you can not use an answer file. It's a limitation of answer files from what I understand and they just won't play.
