overwrite mode in pages 09

2011-01-19 Thread William Windels
Hello all,

I was looking for a function in pages 09 to set the typing method to overwrite
instead off insert (the default).

I haven't found a menu-item / shortcut in the menu's or context-menu.

Any help should be very welcome.

best regards,
William Windels

Hi,
I only know the price in swedish crowns from the app store so i'm afraid i
can't be of much help there. The price in Swedish crowns are 295 sek and an us
dollar is about 6.75 swedish crowns.
I just checked with the currency convertion widget available in Dashboard and i
would think now that the introductory price is $45 for Rapidweaver unlesss it's
gone up.

Re: how to turn pdf instruction manuals in to audio books?

2011-01-19 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Trahern,

There isn't much you can do directly from a PDF document, But if you can select
text and copy it into a TextEdit document, you can use the command Add to
iTunes as a spoken track.

You need to make sure that this service is available by selecting text in a
TextEdit document, then going to the Services menu where you should find this
item. If not, go into System Preferences and Select Keyboard. Choose the
Keyboard Shortcuts tab and select Services in the first table. In the second
table, make sure that Add to iTunes as a spoken track is checked, and you can
set a shortcut for it while you're there.

Once you've created all the sound files for a given document, use either
Audiobook Builder or Audiobook Binder to create your audio book.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: overwrite mode in pages 09

2011-01-19 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello William,

I'm not sure what you mean by Overwrite mode.

In Pages, you can select a model which contains fake Latin in the areas where
you can enter your own text. As soon as you start typing, the fake Latin
disappears.

Alternatively, if you have a document you wish to change while still keeping
the styles, you can highlight text and overwrite it. This is what I do all the
time when translating. All styles and fonts remain unchanged.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Router filtering webkit - wasSafari weirdness.

2011-01-19 Thread Andre Nuno Soares

Hello Geoff ,

Check your DNS configuration.
Did you set it manually? If so, change it to DHCP and see if it helps.

Also, what happens if you do a telnet to the webkit address from the

Okay, I am officially replying to my own post. It's a long story, but to
reduce it to the relevant facts, I am able to update webkit when I attach my

into the circuit, however, I always experience the symptoms described below.
I've seen this both with my Mother's Linksys router and my d-link DIR655 which
are both at the latest available firmware levels. There is no filtering
configured on either router, and until late December I had no problems updating
webkit from either location.

While visiting the Apple store I had no difficulty updating Webkit using their
hotspot, hence I presume there must be a way to accomplish the task through
routerssmile. More over, I wouldn't be the only one posting on this.

To reitterate, I have no web filtering active on either device, and as far as I
know, only the webkit download and update check sites are affected. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Greetings,

I'm having varied symptoms browsing on my MBP. Perhaps the two are related -- I'm guessing so. It

a key did not take and I had to close and reopen the browser.

Next, I was unable to update Webkit. Since that problem appeared to be unique
to me I erased webkit.app and attempted to download the current build. For
several days now I click on the download link and after about 30 seconds I
receive the following message:

Safari can’t open the page “http://nightly.webkit.org/” because the server
where this page is located isn’t responding.

I can't load that URL on my XP machine either, but can't imagine that my ISP is
blocking it? I'm also having problems displaying other pages. For example,
I'm attempting to register at the Apple developer site and it hangs after I
press submit.

I killed my cookies, but this had no affect. Could not find how to clear any
other cache that could be a factor?

Is it time to reinstall Snow leopard? Btw, version 10.6.7 is installed, but my
problem began before this update was available.

TIA for any suggestions.

Re: overwrite mode in pages 09

2011-01-19 Thread William Windels
Hi Anne,
Thx for the information.
I am not the pages expert like you are ;)

I mean non of both I think but I'll keep in mind.

What I mean:
If you have a file with something like:

name: ...
address: .

It's mostly the meaning that , when the document is printed, the people write
their name and address in the place where ... is written.

In stead off deletion this dot's I would like to overwrite directly the ...
with my name and address.

In ms word, in combination with (jaws), there was a key for changing this mode:
ctrl+alt+i.

Is there something similar here?

thanx for your answer.

They spoke also about a new button with properties features but I can't find.

Hi,

I think the app just runs in the background on start up. I do think it needs
to be on though but I'm not sure. I agree that this function should be in the

Re: moveaddict

2011-01-19 Thread Chuck Reichel

Hi Ricardo,
Yes it can run in the background.
The way I use it is to launch it from the doc when I need it then go
back to the doc and un check start up at log in.

It's kind of clunky but it works!
What I do not like about it is when you cut something per-say it jumps
back in to the moveaddict window and says moveaddict has no windows.
At this point I navigate back to the desk top or where ever I want to
paste the thing I am moving and it works fine.
with this current behavior of this version of moveaddict thats why I
quit it after doing my moving.

FYI it checks it self to launch at start up after using it.
Thats why I go back to the doc and un check it!
May be they will take care of it in the next version!

Re: how to turn pdf instruction manuals in to audio books?

2011-01-19 Thread Carolyn Haas
Hi:
I have a related question. I have a book someone turned from a PDF into a text
edit. It is an excellent book. But, all the apostrophes, quotation marks, and
some other weird markings make it kind rough reading. I went through actually
word by word, I'm embarrassed to say, and fixed most of one chapter. I have
since decided there were much better ways to spend my time. Anyone know what
makes an apostrophe turn into i-circomflex,' and a quote into
I-with-combining-grave accent? (other than too much baccarty:)?
aAnyone know of an easier way to make corrections? Thanks for any suggestions.

You need to make sure that this service is available by selecting text in a
TextEdit document, then going to the Services menu where you should find this
item. If not, go into System Preferences and Select Keyboard. Choose the
Keyboard Shortcuts tab and select Services in the first table. In the second

can set a shortcut for it while you're there.

Once you've created all the sound files for a given document, use either
Audiobook Builder or Audiobook Binder to create your audio book.

How fast will the voice speak if you use the Add Track to iTunes option, or can

Re: how to turn pdf instruction manuals in to audio books?

2011-01-19 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Carolyn,
This sounds distinctly like a character set conversion problem. Unfortunately,
i'm unfamiliar with the specifics of character sets on the Mac and the process
the person used to convert your book. The most I can do is recommend that they
run the conversion again, paying attention to character set choices if at all
possible. I'm not sure what if anything you might be able to do on your end to
fix the problem, as I've not used TextEdit much as of yet.
Hope this helps somewhat,
Zack.

You need to make sure that this service is available by selecting text in a

Re: Router filtering webkit - wasSafari weirdness.

2011-01-19 Thread Geoff Waaler
Thanks much for the suggestion Andre,

I reset my DLink 655 to factory defaults and confirmed that it is indeed set to
DHCP. When I attempt to telnet to
http://nightly.webkit.org;, it times out Trying: 208.68.139.89

Needless to say nothing happens when I click on the download the latest
nightly build link from webkit.org. As noted before all attempts to check for
updates appear to time out and issue the error message documented initially.

When I ping the address from windows I receive a reply from a different IP
208.68.143.55, though it also hangs when I attempt to enter that URL from
either Mozilla or MSIE.

The problem disappears when I remove the router and connect directly to my
cable modem. Very strange since until recently I had no problems while
attached wirelessly via my DLink 655.

Except for the fact that my problem is with access to the webkit site, this is
really a network issue, hence is probably OT here. Perhaps if anyone is
willing to help you can write me privately, and I will post the solution here
in case anyone is curious (assuming I find a solution that is).

Best regards.
Geoff

Okay, I am officially replying to my own post. It's a long story, but to

introduced into the circuit, however, I always experience the symptoms
described below. I've seen this both with my Mother's Linksys router and my
d-link DIR655 which are both at the latest available firmware levels. There
is no filtering configured on either router, and until late December I had
no problems updating webkit from either location.

While visiting the Apple store I had no difficulty updating Webkit using
their hotspot, hence I presume there must be a way to accomplish the task
through routerssmile. More over, I wouldn't be the only one posting on
 this.

To reitterate, I have no web filtering active on either device, and as far
as I know, only the webkit download and update check sites are affected.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

announce safari busy and safari ready. Pressing a key did not take and
I had to close and reopen the browser.

Next, I was unable to update Webkit. Since that problem appeared to be
unique to me I erased webkit.app and attempted to download the current
build. For several days now I click on the download link and after about
30 seconds I receive the following message:

Safari can’t open the page “http://nightly.webkit.org/” because the server
where this page is located isn’t responding.

I can't load that URL on my XP machine either, but can't imagine that my
ISP is blocking it? I'm also having problems displaying other pages. For
example, I'm attempting to register at the Apple developer site and it
 hangs after I press submit.

I killed my cookies, but this had no affect. Could not find how to clear
any other cache that could be a factor?

Is it time to reinstall Snow leopard? Btw, version 10.6.7 is installed,
but my problem began before this update was available.

Insert menu, there is Sender Field which has a submenu. The submenu contains
options such as Name, Address, E-mail, Phone, etc. And these too have their
submenus. Is this what you're looking for?

You can set a keyboard shortcut for any item that appears in a menu.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: how to turn pdf instruction manuals in to audio books?

2011-01-19 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Carolyn,

The conversion was almost certainly done using a PC, but you can fix the
problem fairly easily by using the Replace All function of the Find command.

Work out what each wrong character should be, then select the first occurrence
of that character, press Cmd-F, paste it into the first edit field, go to the
next edit field and put in the character it should be, then click Replace All.
Navigating left you'll see how many were changed.

Use Cmd-` to switch back to the main window and repeat the exercise for the
other erroneous characters.

Cheers,

Anne

This sounds distinctly like a character set conversion problem.
Unfortunately, i'm unfamiliar with the specifics of character sets on the

character set choices if at all possible. I'm not sure what if anything you

 Hope this helps somewhat,

 Hello Trahern,

There isn't much you can do directly from a PDF document, But if you can
select text and copy it into a TextEdit document, you can use the command
Add to iTunes as a spoken track.

You need to make sure that this service is available by selecting text in
a TextEdit document, then going to the Services menu where you should find
this item. If not, go into System Preferences and Select Keyboard. Choose
the Keyboard Shortcuts tab and select Services in the first table. In the
second table, make sure that Add to iTunes as a spoken track is checked,
and you can set a shortcut for it while you're there.

Once you've created all the sound files for a given document, use either
Audiobook Builder or Audiobook Binder to create your audio book.

Re: moveaddict

2011-01-19 Thread William Windels
Hello all,

it's fixed after doing some permission repair.

For me , it works like it should work.
It fixes also another (bug) in macosx:
When you cut a folder and put them on another place where a folder with the
same name is stored, by default , macosx will replace the destination folder
with the source folder even if the source folder has e.g. less files.
ON this way , you can lose files, after ignoring the message of macosx, that
the folder will be replaced completely.
Windows is doing better (safer) on that point:
You'll be prompted for every element that is duplicated.

Moveaddict will fix this also by giving some windows-alike options.

Moveaddict should be perfect if it should simulate a real drag and drop with
command+x and command+c but I think it doesn't :(

best regards,
William

Re: overwrite mode in pages 09

2011-01-19 Thread William Windels
Hello Anne,
No, it's not that what I mean.

I'll try to give a example:
If I type mailliw , it's me first name spelled reversed,
Then I put the program in overwrite-mode, I set the cursor on the m and I type
william.
The letters of mailliw are replaced with the word william, without deleting any
character.

In my first example:
name: .
address: .
I don't have to delete the ... and the lay-out of the document will not be
destroid.

In ms-office , this is called something like a overwrite-mode and it seems not
available in pages.

Re: moveaddict

2011-01-19 Thread Ricardo Walker
Right.

You can't access it with voiceover but, it can be accessed with a mouse or your
track pad. If using a track pad, make sure trackpad commander is off. Now
open up VO utilities. Go down to navigation and set your mouse to move the
voiceover cursor. Now your all set. Voiceover will announce whats underneath
the mouse cursor as you move with the trackpad or the mouse. Move the mouse up
or drag you finger up on the trackpad until you hear the items in the status
bar like the clock and airport express. Move slowly to the left and you will
reach an unlabeled button. If you click with the trackpad or mouse, or do a
mouse click on the keyboard with VO shift spacebar, the menu will open. You
can use the keyboard from here on out. Once you've opened preferences for
moveaddict, open your applications chooser and their should be a system dialog
open. Got to this. It will be the preference window.

Accessible kindle comes out for windows while Macs don't

Re: Accessible kindle comes out for windows while Macs don't

2011-01-19 Thread Andre Nuno Soares

If you look at what they did on smart phones, Amazon clearly prefers to sell as
many ebooks to as many people as they can, instead of pushing a specific
hardware, even when it's their own.

This and the fact they only need to make the Kindle for Mac VoiceOver
compatible, that is, no need to implement/maintain new features...why not? I
really can't see a reason for them not to do it.

Now, and what about the IOS app? :-)

Always optimistic,
André

Re: Router filtering webkit - wasSafari weirdness.

2011-01-19 Thread Scott Granados
You need to put an 80 after the telnet so something like

telnet mycompany.org 80

the 80 gives you the correct port number.

to DHCP. When I attempt to telnet to
http://nightly.webkit.org;, it times out Trying: 208.68.139.89

Needless to say nothing happens when I click on the download the latest
nightly build link from webkit.org. As noted before all attempts to check
for updates appear to time out and issue the error message documented
 initially.

Except for the fact that my problem is with access to the webkit site, this
is really a network issue, hence is probably OT here. Perhaps if anyone is
willing to help you can write me privately, and I will post the solution here
in case anyone is curious (assuming I find a solution that is).

 Best regards.

Okay, I am officially replying to my own post. It's a long story, but to

my MBP directly to the cable modem via eathernet. When routers are
introduced into the circuit, however, I always experience the symptoms
described below. I've seen this both with my Mother's Linksys router and
my d-link DIR655 which are both at the latest available firmware levels.
There is no filtering configured on either router, and until late December
I had no problems updating webkit from either location.

While visiting the Apple store I had no difficulty updating Webkit using
their hotspot, hence I presume there must be a way to accomplish the task

 this.

To reitterate, I have no web filtering active on either device, and as far
as I know, only the webkit download and update check sites are affected.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

 Greetings,

I'm having varied symptoms browsing on my MBP. Perhaps the two are

I would press the submit button in a form and then Voiceover would
repeatidly announce safari busy and safari ready. Pressing a key did
not take and I had to close and reopen the browser.

 TIA for any suggestions.

Re: Accessible kindle comes out for windows while Macs don't

2011-01-19 Thread Mary Otten
Ricardo,
The Kindle accessibility plug in application was designed using something
called the qt graphics package. I haven't a clue what that is. But given that
they went out of their way to use something that doesn't let you actually use
the app with your screen reader, using the screen reader's navigation keys,
speech synthesis etc, I would guess that they're not going to write anything
for the Mac that enables vo users to get full access. they're still worried
about their precious agreement with the publishers and the tts. Since Macs and
I-devices have screen reading available by default, somebody at Amazon will
undoubtedly decide that they can't let Mac users have the access, because they
it would be available to everybody. You can't use the accessibility app on
Windoes unless you have a screen reader installed, even though the tts used
does not come from your screen reader.

2011-01-19 Thread Mary Otten
If you go to the page on amazon for the accessible Kindle app, you'll see that
they require that one have a screen reader installed to use the tts feature.
that's why they can let us have access to all the books, even those that are
tts disabled on the Kindle hardware. Sighted people generally don't have screen
readers installed, but with Macs and I-devices, that's not the case. I hope I
am proven wrong and amazon actually does make the thing vo-compatible, but I
bet they don't do anything for I-devices, and they'll have to come up with a
way to ensure that only screen reader users can access the tts on the Mac. How
do you do that when VO is on all Macs?

Never Thought I'd Have Tilting Issues In Aurifi ...

2011-01-19 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

This question regards the game for IOS4. Tilting my ITouch has really become an
issue for various purposes during the game. Getting started is no problem, but
for some of the activities, things don't go the way I expect them to at all.
I've tried tilting sharply or tilting at a 90-degree angle, etc., and the
results are inconsistent for me. I've always had trouble holding liquids level,
so this is no great surprise.

Nevertheless, does anyone else find this tilting bit to be somewhat of a
learning curve?

TIA,
Teresa

Needless to say nothing happens when I click on the download the latest

When I ping the address from windows I receive a reply from a different IP

The problem disappears when I remove the router and connect directly to my

Except for the fact that my problem is with access to the webkit site, this

I killed my cookies, but this had no affect. Could not find how to clear

Re: Accessible kindle comes out for windows while Macs don't

2011-01-19 Thread Chris Snyder
Intellectual property issues are a pain. I understand that the artist or author
needs to be compensated for their work, but I'm really tired of the extremes
that companies go to. It's ridiculous that anyone could consider TTS voices as
an actual audio book. As someone who produces actual audio books, I'm here to
say that it's not as simple as sticking someone in a booth and making them read
the text. There is a certain level of artistry and performance that goes into
them. sigh

but for some of the activities, things don't go the way I expect them to at
all. I've tried tilting sharply or tilting at a 90-degree angle, etc., and
the results are inconsistent for me. I've always had trouble holding liquids
level, so this is no great surprise.

Nevertheless, does anyone else find this tilting bit to be somewhat of a
 learning curve?

 TIA,
 Teresa

Re: how to turn pdf instruction manuals in to audio books?

2011-01-19 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Chuck,

You can find the item in iTunes by going to the Sources table, selecting
Recently Added and looking in the table for Text to Speech. The file itself
will be in/Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Unknown Artist/Unknown
Album/Text to Speech.m4a

Once you've found it in iTunes, you can do Cmd-I on it and name it correctly.

Cheers,

Anne
