 Hi,
Ibook apps are epub books. Therefore, you can read them on your MAc using
 any program that supports EPub.

 Hello Scott and others,

What about those of us who do not have ios devices? Although I do read my
books on my BrailleNote, I would still like to have the option of
downloading ibooks onto my Mac, seeing as some books are not available in
Braille. Those that are available on Bookshare's website are sometimes a
 pain.
 These are just my thoughts.

 Hi Scott,
Well, Amazon has kindle for pc and Mac, so I assume they must think at
least some sighted people would like to read books on a computer. Quite
honestly, one of the reasons I would like to see IBooks on the computer is

that I'd really like to read with the Alex voice and not the voices on my
IPad. I certainly agree that portability is a huge advantage, but if you
had a MBP or and MBA, then you'd still have portability, especially with
the MBA. If you had an IPhone and an MBA and were sighted, I could
definitely see wanting to read the books on a screen larger than the phone

 offers.

An Early Win for Newly Formed NantWorks LLC, LookTel Turns a Smart Phone into
a Device That Helps the Blind to See

LOS ANGELES, Oct 27, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE)

NantWorks LLC, the company formed by Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong in September
this year, announced that its LookTel technology had been selected as a
winner of the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) Chairman's Awards for
Advancements in Accessibility. The award, which recognizes outstanding

packaged goods, medication bottles, storefronts and landmarks. Recognition
happens in real time, without delay, and the device will speak the identity
of the object, for example the denomination of a bill.
We are honored to have been chosen for this award from the FCC, said Dr.
Soon-Shiong, and delighted to be able to bring forward this important
recognition platform, which is going to make a difference to many people's
 lives.

LookTell

2011-10-28 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Guys.
I have a question about the information Cara sent. When I read the information,
it said something about identification of packaged material, bottles,
landmarks. I thought the LookTell program just did money. What are they talking
about when they mention these other things? Is there another program that
LookTell did for the iPhone that I don't know about? I just have the one on my
iPhone that comes up saying Money Reader. It works better, by the way since
they updated it again. I think it identifies U.S. dollars as fast as it did
before.

Regards,
Gigi

NantWorks Object Recognition Technology Wins FCC Chairman's Award

An Early Win for Newly Formed NantWorks LLC, LookTel Turns a Smart Phone
into a Device That Helps the Blind to See

LOS ANGELES, Oct 27, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE)

NantWorks LLC, the company formed by Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong in September
this year, announced that its LookTel technology had been selected as a
winner of the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) Chairman's Awards
for Advancements in Accessibility. The award, which recognizes outstanding
efforts to advance communications accessibility for people with
disabilities, will be presented at a ceremony at FCC headquarters in
 Washington D.C. on October 28th 2011.
LookTel was developed for the blind and visually impaired. It enables a
standard smart phone to be used to recognize objects such as currency
bills, packaged goods, medication bottles, storefronts and landmarks.
Recognition happens in real time, without delay, and the device will speak
the identity of the object, for example the denomination of a bill.
We are honored to have been chosen for this award from the FCC, said Dr.
Soon-Shiong, and delighted to be able to bring forward this important
recognition platform, which is going to make a difference to many people's
 lives.
 About NantWorks
NantWorks LLC is a company founded and led by Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong. Its
mission is to converge semiconductor technology, supercomputing, advanced
networks and augmented intelligence to transform how we work, play and
live. Early applications will be in the field of scientific research and
healthcare. For more information, see www.nantworks.com .

a note on microphones for macs

2011-10-28 Thread Alex Hall

Hi all,
I just made a discovery that I really wish someone had shared
with me earlier. Apparently, Macs use a different microphone
input than most other PC sound cards. This means that the
standard, non line-quality microphone you may have, as I do, will
not work with a Mac's microphone jack. You either need a
converter, a microphone that is certified to work with Macs, or a
USB microphone. This also explains why Windows sees only a
line-in jack for audio input in addition to digital audio.

Just try leaving the password field empty and continue with the task!
But If you have not got a pass word on your Mac I should set one up!

 Hi all,
I just made a discovery that I really wish someone had shared with me
earlier. Apparently, Macs use a different microphone input than most other
PC sound cards. This means that the standard, non line-quality microphone
you may have, as I do, will not work with a Mac's microphone jack. You
either need a converter, a microphone that is certified to work with Macs,
or a USB microphone. This also explains why Windows sees only a line-in
jack for audio input in addition to digital audio.

lost Skype

2011-10-28 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all-again!
Yesterday I downloaded Skype but couldn't get it to make calls. Today I seem to
have lost the ap altogether! Any idea where it might be hiding? I have been
into 'finder' and found it at the bottom under 'devices', but when I try and
interact with it, or select it, it just says 'interacting with volume' or
'alias' or something. It's not in my doc and my desktop is empty. How do I find
it and then open it? I was going to try and have a play with it again to see if
I could get it calling today …
Thanks.

I don't know if many folks realize this, but headphones for iPhones, and iPods
with built in mics, do also work on the mac. I've never tried it for anything
but just messing around in garageband, and the quality probably isn't that much
better than the built in mic, except closer to you, but it does work.

Re: a note on microphones for macs

2011-10-28 Thread Chris Blouch
Generally outside the PC world there are three standards for audio
signals: Tiny mic level signals, line level signals such as used to
patch a CD player into an amplifier and then speaker level to drive
headphones or speakers. The Mac uses line level inputs while PCs use mic
level inputs so if you want to hook up a plain old mic to a mac you'll
need a pre amp. PCs also do a rather odd (or ingenious) thing not seen
in regular audio setups. There is a type of mic called a condenser mic
which requires power to operate. This power can come from batteries but
more often comes from phantom power which is a 48v signal sent out the
mic wires from the mixer. In the PC world they didn't have a 48v line
laying around but they did have 5v so they used that instead and made
special mics to run on 5v. 5v will not make it very far down a wire but
most PC mic cables are only a couple feet long. What this causes is a
second problem for Macs which don't support this PC-only 5v mic
'standard'. So even if you could hook the pins up to a preamp from your
PC mic, it still would fail to function because it needs 5v. Maybe
somebody could hack together a way to get phantom power from a standard
mixer into a PC mic but they would have to figure out how to drop the
normal 48v down to 5. Anyway, that's a long way of saying PC mics are
very different from any other audio stuff out there and it's probably
better/cheaper/easier to just not bother trying to get one to work on
anything other than a PC. I actually prefer the Mac way since I like to
have external gear which, other than mics, usually has line level
outputs so I can just patch it right into my mac audio input. My usual
setup for skype, demo recording and such is to just use a cheap Shure
SM58 with an old Mackie mixer. I can then run the audio out of my mac
into the mixer which I can mix with my own voice mic and anything else
and run that back into the Mac. That way I have independent control over
the Mac/voice mix.

If nothing else, contact the devs and make them aware of the problem.

Patrick Soon-Shiong in
September this year, announced that its LookTel technology had been
selected as a winner of the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC)
Chairman's Awards for Advancements in Accessibility. The award, which
recognizes outstanding efforts to advance communications accessibility
for people with disabilities, will be presented at a ceremony at FCC
headquarters in Washington D.C. on October 28th 2011.
LookTel was developed for the blind and visually impaired. It enables a
standard smart phone to be used to recognize objects such as currency
bills, packaged goods, medication bottles, storefronts and landmarks.
Recognition happens in real time, without delay, and the device will
speak the identity of the object, for example the denomination of a
bill.
We are honored to have been chosen for this award from the FCC, said
Dr. Soon-Shiong, and delighted to be able to bring forward this
important recognition platform, which is going to make a difference to
many people's lives.

About NantWorks
NantWorks LLC is a company founded and led by Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong.
Its mission is to converge semiconductor technology, supercomputing,

Re: a note on microphones for macs

2011-10-28 Thread Brent Harding
I'm not sure if this is only on my Blue Eyeball, if mine got fried a little bit
being accidentally plugged into my cell phone charger, or the way Blue designed
it, but 100 percent is the only recording level. If I moved it to 0 as I was
talking into it, it did absolutely nothing on either my Windows desktop, Snow
Leopard on the Mac, or boot camped Windows on the Macbook. I know you can
usually uncheck a box in the sound preferences or volume control that will make
only silence record from the mic source, essentially muting it, but if I
continued to talk on mute, my voice got picked up at full level also. My old
plantronics headset allows level variability and the ability to keep other
software recording while it's unselected and it really silences, so it must be
this eyeball mic some how.

Hi all,

I just made a discovery that I really wish someone had shared with me
earlier. Apparently, Macs use a different microphone input than most other PC
sound cards. This means that the standard, non line-quality microphone you may
have, as I do, will not work with a Mac's microphone jack. You either need a
converter, a microphone that is certified to work with Macs, or a USB
microphone. This also explains why Windows sees only a line-in jack for audio
input in addition to digital audio.

TeamTalk on Lion?

Hi all,
I'm trying to get TeamTalk working on Lion. I downloaded the

Hi!

Please tell us what the command is for the label feature?
On Oct 24, 2011, at 3:16 PM, John André Netland wrote:

In some ways you can, by using the object label feature in VoiceOver.
Interact with the message list when you have an unread message there, focus
on the unread button, and open the label feature to enter whatever you want
VO to say instead. Every time VoiceOver sees such a button again, it will use
your new term. Also, you can do the same for Forwarded and Replied
messages. Just find such a message, interact until you find the correct
button, and label it with something else. And of course, if you don't have a
forwarded or replied message on hand, just forward or reply to yourself, to
have the buttons appear in your inbox. :)

 Hi,

If a message is the first to appear with this topic, you will only see the
name of the sender. If there is a conversation going on, and you still have
the previous messages stored, the number of new messages in the thread is
shown. If there is only one new, the number will be 1. This way, you always
know how many messages have been added to the conversation. This will vary a
bit from your setup and use of Mail, but in general, this is a way to
 explain it.

For the announcements, you have the ability to restrict much of what
VoiceOver says in VoiceOver Utility. For example, you can go to the
Verbosity category, choose the Speech verbosity tab, click the checkbox to
show the detailed list of verbosity options, and find the Disclosure
triangle control. Set this to Custom, and uncheck the Type checkbox. This
will make VoiceOver only say the number, and if the triangle is open or
 closed.

 HOpe this helps!
