Re: searching mail

2012-06-24 Thread Søren Jensen
Hi.

Let's see if I can explain how it works, because it's a bit tricky to explain:
After you've entered a name of a person in the search field in the toolbar,
you can use the up and down arrows to choose where you wanna search. You can
choose between the body text, the from field and the subject field. Please note
that when you've chosen one of these categories, you can't spell what you've
writen by using the arrow keys. The text you've written will be shown as a
group. The reason for that is because you can make multiple groups. Let's take
an example to clear up any confusion my explanation might give:
You can find this mail by doing the following:
Copy my name to your clipboard because of the danish letter in my name: Søren
Jensen
Go to your inbox and find the search field in the toolbar
Paste in my name, press the down arrow to VOiceover says: From: Søren Jensen,
popup button press return and then press the spacebar to make a new search
category.
Type this subject: Searching mail, and then press the down arrow again until
you come to: subject and press the return key again.
Now you have these two categories which you can read by pressing the left and
right arrow keys.

Now, back to your question on how to search in mails in your trash folder:
When you've typed in the name of the person you wanna search for, chosen that
you wanna search in the from field and then pressed the return key, stop
interacting with the toolbar and then move the VO cursor right to the favorite
group. I'm sorry if I got that item wrong in english since my system is
currently in danish.
Interact with this group and there you can choose what folder you wanna see the
search results from.

I hope my explanation was understandable and helpful. Please let me know if
there's something you don't understand or if you have more questions.
Best regards:
Søren Jensen

Copying a disk

2012-06-24 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Hi
I want to make an identical copy of a disk. I understand I need to use the
disk utility app in order tocreate a disk image on my hard drive, and then
burn that onto a blank disk.
In Disk Utility, do I just go into new/image? Or do I use open/image?
Any steps gratefully received? I assume the app is accessible. It certainly
looked pretty standard when I opened it up just now.
Many thanks.

Hi, I use Wordpress and have multiple pages on my website.

I would have told you yesterday that I have found the latest version
inaccessible, but I discovered the issue and so can now report that I am
finding using Wordpress, with JAWS, SATOGO, NVDA on windows, and Voice-Over
on the Mac and IPhone, very accessible.

I haven't quite managed to get subpages working yet. For instance, when you
click on a page you get a new set of links on that page. But I have managed
to create multiple pages and add nearly 100 blog posts.

I am happy to help, and Wordpress are keen to hear from people using screen
readers about accessibility.

choppy VO on apple tv

2012-06-24 Thread Mary Otten
I wasn't sure which list to send this to, since it concerns an A tv, not a Mac
or a Phone. I'm just wondering if there has ever been found a solution to the
problem of VO being very choppy when used on the apple tv. I've tried this with
the remote that comes with the a tv first gen and also with the remote app that
works on my iPhone. And the choppy speech is really a problem. I recall some
people having the problem earlier. It seemed to get a little better for me, but
I haven't been using the A tv much lately except in its role as a substitute
for an airport express playing music through the speakers attached to the
system where the a tv is. But this morning I decided I wanted to watch
something on netflix, and I found the speech was so choppy that it really made
navigation difficult. Any hints on how to solve this would be really
appreciated. It seemed worse when using the remote app, but since I have issues
getting the little remote to do what I want, I'm apparently not pointing it
precisely correctly, I was really hoping to make the remote app work so as to
ditch that finicky remote. All help is appreciated.

Try an app called SoftCon DVD Player. It's specifically written to make it
easier for VO users. Simply do a Google search on SoftCon DVD Player and you
should find it. I have not used it in a while as most of my media is already
digital but you may like to give it a whirl.

You need to set up an account with Google first and it does not have to be a
gmail account. Once done, sign in, then look for Google groups. Once done,
find the VI Group and apply for membership and wait to hear that you have been

Re: choppy VO on apple tv

2012-06-24 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I never got that stupid remote app to work. I tried and tried as I may, but
got nowhere. I for one have been an Apple TV user for at least a year and a
half now, and have migrated even from the 2nd gen to the 3rd gen, and never
have seen the choppy voiceover you describe.

Can you give an example of something you were trying to do that made it
really bad? You say NetFlix, but be more specific. Were you trying to
browse movies? Were you on the keyboard searching for something, etc etc.

Subject: choppy VO on apple tv

I wasn't sure which list to send this to, since it concerns an A tv, not a
Mac or a Phone. I'm just wondering if there has ever been found a solution
to the problem of VO being very choppy when used on the apple tv. I've tried
this with the remote that comes with the a tv first gen and also with the
remote app that works on my iPhone. And the choppy speech is really a
problem. I recall some people having the problem earlier. It seemed to get a
little better for me, but I haven't been using the A tv much lately except
in its role as a substitute for an airport express playing music through the
speakers attached to the system where the a tv is. But this morning I
decided I wanted to watch something on netflix, and I found the speech was
so choppy that it really made navigation difficult. Any hints on how to
solve this would be really appreciated. It seemed worse when using the
remote app, but since I have issues getting the little remote to do what I
want, I'm apparently not pointing it precisely correctly, I was really
hoping to make the remote app work so as to ditch that finicky remote. All
help is appreciated.

Creating Documents on an iPod

2012-06-24 Thread Christopher Edwards

Hello,
First of all, thank you for all the good information I have gained while
lurking on this list. I bought a Macbook Pro a few weeks ago and am
gradually getting used to it. I know I will have a lot of questions for you
about that soon.

I also have an iPod touch which I bought at the end of last year but I have
never done much with it due to lack of time. Thanks to the friendly people
at my local Apple Store that has now been upgraded to IOS 5 and I have
managed to make my way through the setup procedure. I also bought a
Bluetooth keyboard which has now made entering textmuch easier.

Now to my question, or rather questions.
I will be going on holiday in Scotland shortly and thought of taking the
iPod and keyboard with me to keep a simple diary. I will not need all the
functionality of the Macbook so this seemed a lighter and more compact
choice.

Are there any accessible equivalents to Text Edit that run on the iPod? I
also see that there is a version of Pages for IOS devices. Would this be a
good choice? Are there other programs you would suggest? Also, is it
straightforward to transfer the documents back to the Macbook? I presume I
would use iTunes but I have not really got to grips with that yet.

I would greatly appreciate your comments and look forward to receiving them.

Many thanks,

chris

Hi,

yes, you would use iTunes to transfer your documents created in pages to your
Mac with iTunes. May I suggest trying the Notes app that came on your touch?
This might meet your needs, and you wouldn't need to pay the $10 for the pages

 Hi fusion folks,
Today I went from fusion 3 to 4. Before you do this yourself, and if you're
still thinking whether or not to do it, here are some thoughts before you
 begin.

 1. Last week, I bought fusion 4, while I had v3 running. After upgrading
from fusion 3 to 4, which is possible using an app inside the fusion 4 disk
image, fusion asked if I wanted to upgrade my virtual windows machine from
version 3 to 4, to add more features and speed to it. I answered yes and it
went ahead. When it booted though, the desktop did not come up any longer.
My wife told me there's a message saying this and that could not be found,
and in short I had severe windows problems after upgrading the vm from v3 to
v4. Of course this doesn't have to happen to you, but before trusting the
upgrade process, I would suggest you backup your entire system. Or, at least
have your windows stuff safe so that you can access all of it outside
 windows.

 2. So I started from scratch. I uninstalled fusion 3, using the uninstaller
that is in my applications folder, and I then installed a fresh fusion 4.
After entering my serial number, I had a blank configuration to start with.
The fusion 4 installer is very accessible and straight forward.

 3. Now here's the good news. I used an i s o file, which is just a disk
image file that contains the entire windows installation cd. I followed the
command n new virtual machine wizard. It asks for either a windows
installation cd or a disk image iso file, so I gave it that. You enter some
other minor necessities, and then windows is installed in 15 minutes or
less, without any sighted assistance. That was also true in fusion 3, but it
always remains to be seen in newer situations. So accessibility remains the
same while installing windows, comparing fusion 3 and 4.

 4. I had problems with my screen reader, which is an old one, called hal,
from Dolphin oceanic limited. After installing my screen reader, which
worked just fine under the same version of windows on my fusion v3
installation that I have used for over a year now, it complained about video
problems. To compress this story: I saw other folks having issues with jaws
in the same upgrade situation. A solution that worked for me, is to
downgrade the file format of the virtual machine, from version 4 back to
being fusion 3 compatible. You just interact with devices in the fusion 4
toolbar, interact with the scroll area where it has all settings, and almost
at the end there, you have a compatibility button. Behind it is a dialog
with radio buttons, that tell fusion in what file format you want to store
the virtual machine on to the mac disk. If you set it to 3, rather than
fusion 4 compatible, then if your jaws worked earlier, it may work just fine
again. I don't know much about authorisations, but video wise, the problems
may solve themselves. Downgrading your virtual machine from the fusion 4
format back to the 3 format, takes away newer video functions, returning you
into an older type of emulated hardware. I hope this can help other people
who have problems after upgrading their fusion from v3 to v4. To be clear,
you can easily keep running fusion version 4. It's just that you need to
roll back the file conversion process, or if you have the choice and you
know what you know now, just don't let fusion upgrade your vm. Just a
thought. And if you do, have a backup handy. If it does work for you and you
are now running a windows screen reader using fusion v4, and also the v4
compatible vm file format, then please post back on this, so we can learn
 from each other's experience.

 Paul.

My question is, How I can copy that file or folder in to certain folder?

Hi,

You need a philips double 0 screw driver to open the bottom of your Macbook.
There are 10 screws I believe.

As to the type of RAM, 1066 or 1067MHZ DDR 3. When you open up the Macbook,
you will find that the RAM is stacked 1 upon another. There are a lever to
each side of the RAM. You pull these apart gentely, and the RAM will pop up.

Trouble with dictation

 Hi guys again
I wonder if anyone else is having this trouble, and if it's a voiceover thing

says thinking, and nothing appears on the display. Every time this happens, I

How long have you had that Apple TV remote? I wonder if your battery's

Subject: Creating Documents on an iPod

Hello,
First of all, thank you for all the good information I have gained while
lurking on this list. I bought a Macbook Pro a few weeks ago and am
gradually getting used to it. I know I will have a lot of questions for
you

about that soon.

I also have an iPod touch which I bought at the end of last year but I
have

never done much with it due to lack of time.

I would greatly appreciate your comments and look forward to receiving
them.

Many thanks,

chris

Apple TV, but, still that takes the TV to use. I ask this as maybe the HDMI
cord came loose from the Apple TV or the TV itself, or maybe one of your
red-white-yellow chords going to the receiver are lose on the TV side,
although if other things from the TV are playing fine, then that probably
isn't likely. Could the speakers be at falt? Check the alegator clips on
the back of the receiver and be sure the wire hasn't fallen a ways out.
Make sure they're pushed deep in the whole and clamped down tightly with the
clip. What type of TV have you got? That, too may clue us in a bit.

I mean, ok, Panasonic Plasma, or whatever, but specifically do you know the
model?

Finally, and God forbid this is the case, but if you feel the apple TV
square box itself, does it feel warm/hot to the touch? I wonder if you got
a processor/memory leakage somewhere.

What firmware version are you running on the thing, and what generation
Apple TV are we working with here?

Chris.

I replaced the battery in the apple tv remote, and the wifi connection is
good. I'm thinking a bad cable or something funky with the input on my
surround sound receiver might be at issue, but then, why is other audio

2012-06-24 Thread Mary Otten
No, I have the issue with the remote app and the apple remote, so it isn't a
problem with the apple remote. I think it has to be the device, my receiver or
the connecting cable.

2012-06-24 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Gigi,

I can't really say much about if this happens now, seeing I'm a dev on I O S 6,
so thus am on N D A, but I can! legally say this: in I O S 5, which is the
most current firmware readily available for the public, which I'm quite sure is
what you have, I had this problem a fair amount, yes.

Remember that even though dictation is not a part of Seri persey, it is
actually ran through the same proxy server that Seri uses. With this said,
basically in a more basic meaning... if the server is busy that Seri uses,
which often times, it is, remember, Seri is? still in public beta... then
dictation also isn't gonna work.

Here's a little trick, if you don't wanna restart your IPhone that you can try
that sometimes helps. This isn't exactly documented, and it's nothing I
shouldn't be telling you. Why this works, I'm unfortunately not allowed to
disclose but i can! at least tell you sometimes and actually, often times, it
does.

When this happens, go to settings, then go to general, and finally, Seri.

You'll notice that you have 3 options. always, which is probably where it's
now at, handset only, or off. If you switch it to handset only for about 5
seconds, then switch it back to always, then try using Seri, or dictation,
either or, it should start to work again.

Again, I'm not authorized to explain to you why this works, and I know it's
kind a cock eyed. Trust me though, if you knew the reason, you'd understand.
Trust me though, for now, just know, stupid as I know this sounds, and as
irrelivant as I'm sure it's gotta sound, believe me: it does! usually work.

Hi guys again
I wonder if anyone else is having this trouble, and if it's a voiceover thing
or a dictation thing. Sometimes on my iPhone dictation option just doesn't work
at all. I press the dictation key and with no warning, nothing happens. It just
says thinking, and nothing appears on the display. Every time this happens, I
have to restart the iPhone. Restarting seems to solve the problem, until the
next time it decides to go on strike.

Subscribing to the viphone list [was Re: Viphone list]

2012-06-24 Thread Esther
Hi Stacey,

I think it is possible for you to subscribe to the viphone list without having
Google account by having the list owner or moderator add you directly to the
subscription list. I'll dig up a recent post by Raul Gallego on this subject
and append it. However, I don't think that you have control over your
subscription that way -- if you want to stop receiving list mail probably your
only option is to unsubscribe, and then to try to start subscribing as though
you were a completely new user again, with the same waiting period if there's a
backlog on approving new user subscriptions. As Kawal explained, when you
create a Google account, you do not need to also create a gmail account for
mail. Also, if you have multiple email accounts, you can choose which of these
accounts you want to be associated with receiving the list email posts, or
change your email address if your current one terminates, and you can manage
your subscriptions (no mail, digest format, etc.) from your Google account.

Creating a Google account does require negotiating a Captcha, but you only have
to do it once. There is an audio Captcha option on the web page, but I find
those pretty bad, too, although it was manageable. I'll add that the default
page you are linked to if you choose to create an account from the page where
you are prompted to log in to the viphone list now makes it appear as though
you have to create a gmail account when you create your Google account. You
don't need to do this, and you also don't need to supply your phone or SMS
number to activate your account, despite being encouraged to do so for
security purposes.

Here's the URL to use to create a new account without also creating a gmail
account:
https://accounts.google.com/newaccount?hl=en

You need to supply your current email address and the password you wish to
create for your account, retyped to verify it. And apparently you must now
supply your date of birth (so they can verify you are over 13). That email
address is being used as your unique login for your Google account. If you
need to change your email address for receiving mail at a later time, or add
another email account that you'd prefer to use for your subscription instead,
you'll also be able to manage this yourself within your Google account. Make
sure to check the box for accepting the terms of service before you press the
Create my account button.

Once you've created your account, return to the viphone list page:
http://groups.google.com/group/viphone

Use the link for Apply for group membership and sign in with your Google
account login (which is the non-gmail email address you used to create the
account) and password. I'd add a note saying that you were previously a member
of the list, which they'll be able to verify.

At any later time you should be able to go to the Manage My Membership page
for your account at to change your subscription status or go no mail for a
while:
http://groups.google.com/groups/mysubs?hl=en_USpli=1

There are more detailed instructions that posted for Teresa about changing
membership options, and you can read the archived post if you ever need more
information:
• Re: The New Google Groups Site and viewing/changing membership options?
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg64431.html

I'll paste in Raul's message if you want to try to subscribe via email only.

Hello all. You might want to save this for future reference. Since this topic
has come up recently I thought I'd give information on getting help with this
list when it comes to managing your subscription via email instead of the web
 site.

This is mainly aimed at those who don't have Google accounts and don't want
to sign up with Google just to participate on the list. To get the help
commands and email addresses for list subscription management, send an email
to viphone+h...@googlegroups.com and you will get an auto-reply message. Note
the Plus sign between viphone and help. The below is what you will get back.

 Hello Jonny.

Here are the instructions to what you need.

 1. Go to your mail folders list.

 2. Press the edit button on your I phone.

 3. Swipe right until you hear Voice Over say create mailbox.

 4. Press enter by double tap or the enter key on your bluetooth keyboard.

 5. Type in desired name of mailbox and left flick or swipe or use your
bluetooth keyboard to go left until you hear done button. However before
you do that, make sure you have the new mailbox in your preferred location.
For example, I have all my mailboxes in my Icloud server.

 Best of luck.

Re: Creative Writing Apps?

2012-06-24 Thread Esther
Hi CJ,

You might want to take a look at Scrivener, which has had several posts in the
archives from people who have used this app. Here's a link to a review that
Austin Seraphin posted on his blog:
http://behindthecurtain.us/2011/09/07/scrivener/

Also, the Literature and Latte site that makes scrivener has a 30-day free
trial download page:
http://www.literatureandlatte.com/trial.php

They now have a Windows version of Scrivener, too. And I think they also offer
an education discount, but you may have to supply additional information.
