Trouble reading mail conversation with the new operating system.

2014-11-29 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Morning.

I am having problems reading e-mail conversations with the new opperating
system using my Macmini. I thought it would be the same principle as reading
it with Mavericks.

If someone could tell me what I might be doing wrong, please let me know.

I interact with the message conversation, hold down the control key and press
tab as I thought it would move me in to the content area. Any help would be
appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: up specking a new MacBook Air

2014-11-29 Thread Phil Halton
I’d also upgrade the ram over the processor, unless you want to run those apps
that require a lot of processor power like VMFusion etc. I bought a 13” Air a
year or so ago and upgraded to 8 gigabytes of ram. But, because I also wanted
to run windows on the mac under fusion, I upgraded to an i7 processor from the
stock i5.
The machine is lightning fast compared to machines that use mechanical drives.

It really gets expensive adding processor speed and ram.
 Any thoughts welcome.
Also, like the other person, I really need simple instructions about how to

Apple setting to restore to factory defaults like there is on the iPhones?

Re: there are no speakers atached to airport express..

2014-11-29 Thread Caitlyn and Maggie dog
Hi tim,

Months ago, I had a guy here teaching me to use my braille display with my mac.
When we were finished with that, and we still had some time left, he helped me
get our wireless network set up and working with the brother printer and the
extreme. I believe he disabled the Bell wireless setting on the bell router,
leaving it to just be a gateway for the internet.

When you talk about the wireless settings for the extreme, you are referring to
one of the tabs after you hit the edit button from within airport utility,
right?

Just want to make sure I look under the correct thing!
thanks,

is disabled and it is then just a switch that allows the Internet connection.
Sometimes this disabling isn’t possible if you subscribe to one of their
wireless controlled PVR’s but I’m sure someone could figure a way around that
one too. So, in the wireless pane of your Extreme, what mode is it set to?
Similarly, what mode is the Express set to in the same pane?

Re: Finder Podcast Part 1

2014-11-29 Thread Todor Fassl
I've already tried it on my Mac and it works. It does not use lltag, it
uses a perl module called MP3::Info. And it is fairly easy to install
perl modules on a Mac. Give me a day or two to clean it up and I'll
email it to you with installation instructions. I am about as sure as I
can be that it generates valid ITunes rss feeds because I've checked the
xml file versus two different validators. However, I'll admit I didn't
know the first thing about creating podcasts when I started and I've
never submitted a podcast to Apple. But I'd be willing to work with you
to fix any problems if I can.

By all means if it does not involve you in too much effort. I am starting to

If I ever get my head completely around it I will probably do a Podcast on it!

posted and it has most of the appropriate tags. I may be able to find a tool
in Mac OS that works like lltag. There might even be a Mac version of lltag.

I do not mind shelling out for a one off app but would am hesitant
about paying out for an ongoing service.
Does anybody know of accessible Podcast Feed creation clients that are
free or low cost and similar web hosting services that are also free or
low cost?

I suppose an option would be just to see if Apple Vis would be
interested in hosting the podcasts.

Re: How do you use conversation threading in mail on the Mac

2014-11-29 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi,

To use conversations, first tweak the following settings.
1, press control option M for menu bar.
arrow over to view menu,
arrow down to view messages by conversation and press enter.

2, press command comma to open the mail preferences,
tab to viewing and press space bar.
Tab to the checkbox wich reads, “show most recent message at the top”, and
check or uncheck it to taste.

I prefer to view my most recent message at the top the way you describe below,
but I prefer to view any given conversation in the order the messages were
received, oldest message first. Therefore, I have the box in step two
unchecked.

Back in your inbox you will now see that you have substantialy fewer messages.
This is because you are now seeing all messages with the same thread grouped
together. The messages haven’t gone away.

Arrowing up and down your inbox, you will now hear thread collapsed before the
from and subject of many of the messages.

To read a conversation, assuming quicknav is off, press the right arrow to
expand the conversation. Assuming quicknav is on, interact with the messages
table and press control option space on the disclosure triangle on the left to
expand or collapse the conversation. With the conversation expanded, you read
the messages in whichever manner you are used to.

To delete an entire conversation without reading it, press the delete key while
the conversation is collapsed and all messages will be moved to trash. You can
also move or copy entire conversations this way.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Pages and elements in table of contents

2014-11-29 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello all,

Another retrograde step in the new Pages. Under Mavericks, the table of
contents formatter allowed a VoiceOver user to check or uncheck any elements in
the table of contents. Since Yosemite and the latest Pages, those checkboxes
are inaccessible with VO.

However, there is a workaround. That handy little utility MoveMouse allows you
to find these checkboxes so that they can be checked or unchecked using the
mouse or trackpad. The one to the left of the element name is quite close, so
only a couple of moves left are necessary. The one to the right requires around
ten moves right.

Cheers,

Anne

videos on wd mycloud with IOS?

2014-11-29 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi all, I’m doing a bit of digging around because I’ve found a pretty serious
detraction for the mycloud and I need to know if it’s resolvable.

I spent the last few days loading all my girlfriend’s pictures and videos onto
her mycloud and they all work just fine on our macbooks and my droid. Then she
tried to watch some old home videos and tv eps on her ipad and it doesn’t work.
Some of the vids play just fine, I’m thinking they were shot using an IPad.
Other popular movie formats such as avi and mov do not play.

I installed a vlc like video player which can play all popular formats, but no
joy. Then I tried to share a movie out from WD Mycloud, and discovered that
it only has one option in the share settings, and that is link by email. So,
is it just me, or is this really super useless?

she’s pretty irritated honestly. I can sit here with my droid and stream any
file I want off the cloud while her big expensive ipad just sits there
apparently not doing anything.

I’d appreciate any advice.

Thanks,

Erik Burggraaf

Re: there are no speakers atached to airport express..

2014-11-29 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Kait,

Yes, that’s what I meant. After you press the Edit button, there are tabs to
open various screens on your Extreme. By the way, only the Express has the
ability to handle Airplay music streaming to your speakers. The Extreme will
pass-through the signal but the Express is the only device that can deliver it
to your sound system. You can confirm if your Extreme is handling the router
functions by checking what the IP address of your Extreme is as well as
checking in the Network tab that it is providing DHCP and NAT services.

RE: videos on wd mycloud with IOS?

The only other app that might work is good player. Last I checked it was 3
bucks.

Nop, Not really. I’m really asking if there is a workaround such as installing
a compatible player, upgrading to ios 8 to get shared video codeks, or plans to
put more video support directly into the mycloud app.

Thanks anyway though, :)

Subject: videos on wd mycloud with IOS?

Thanks,

Erik Burggraaf

editing html and php on the mac?

Hi, I used to be able to edit php and html files on the mac with no problems.
Since I upgraded to mavericks though, text edit re-encoded my files. So, now a

spaces appear to be not coded properly and it’s a mess.

How can I get web ready text file editing on mavericks?

The old radioshift has been updated, and uses now tunein radio, but

There is an app called radium, it is accessible, and you can hear a lot of

Re: there are no speakers atached to airport express..

2014-11-29 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

That sounds like the issue. Don’t mess with the IP’s to make them the same as
that will cause other issues. Do the following:

1. Go into Airport Utility for the Express.
2. Press the Edit button.
3. Press on the Wireless tab.
4. choose either “Join a Wireless Network” or “Extend a Wireless Network” from
the Wireless Mode pop-up menu in that pane. The difference between these two
has to do with whether you want the Express to re-broadcast your wireless
signal or if you mostly want it for the Airport speakers. Extending your
network can steal a bit of internal bandwidth, but, in most cases, you won’t
notice. If all the Express is needed for is for the speaker capabilities, then
choose the “Join a Wireless Network” option.
5. Follow the prompts for choosing the network to join or extend. It will ask
for you to choose your home network and enter the WiFi password if you have
one. All the DHCP and NAT stuff will then be disabled as they’re not needed
when the Extreme is providing that service. You really don’t want multiple
routers delivering DHCP info.

Yes, that’s what I meant. After you press the Edit button, there are tabs
to open various screens on your Extreme. By the way, only the Express has
the ability to handle Airplay music streaming to your speakers. The Extreme
will pass-through the signal but the Express is the only device that can
deliver it to your sound system. You can confirm if your Extreme is
handling the router functions by checking what the IP address of your
Extreme is as well as checking in the Network tab that it is providing DHCP

It sounds like the Bell device might be blocking the ports that handle the

modem is disabled and it is then just a switch that allows the Internet
connection. Sometimes this disabling isn’t possible if you subscribe to
one of their wireless controlled PVR’s but I’m sure someone could figure a

 Hello all,

I would like to have your opinions about he braille evolutions in osx:

Since the introduction of braille in 10.5, only a few changes are made:
adding more supported displays in 10.5.x
 adding more braille-tables in 10.6.x
and I believe in 10.7: a few configuration-options to configure the
 popup-messages.
If I remind well, this is all that is changed in the braille settings.

Since I use my macbook air in a course I follow, I discover that it’s very
hard to use osx without speech.

What is still missing in my opinion after 6 years of evolution from 10.5 to
 10.10:
 1- no option for word wrapping: this can be useful for fast reading (loudly);
2- no different modes line, structured, speech (like in jaws): specialy
structured mode in jaws is configurable, type of controls is shown,
interaction-levels could be shown on this way.
It’s e.g. very frustrating if you are in a text area and you can read all
with the braille-line but you can’t edit or simply move the cursor to any
position that is visible on the braille display.

3- to know if quicknav is on/off before moving isn’t possible also.
On this way , it’s very easy to lose your position in a text-area or a
 window.

4- In some cases, the text that’s in the voiceover cursor is (always)
underlineed with dots 7-8. On this way , no other attributes are shown and
the cursor isn’t shown. If dots 7,8 are turned off, the cursor isn’t visible
at all and capitals aren’t shown also.

5- When i put the cursor on a letter in a text I delete a .(dot) sign on the
left sign of the cursor and voiceover says sometimes something else.

Any hints, solutions, corrections on this points are very welcome.

 Kind regards,
 William Windels

Hi there,

I was having some problems with my installation of MAMP, so I have removed it

I am unable to get to the default web location, I just get the main start page.
When I click on the My Website link, I get a message that Safari can't find
www.localhost - Why would it be looking for www.localhost instead of localhost
and how can I change/fix this?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Re: editing html and php on the mac?

2014-11-29 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Further to what Jeff has said, you can stop this behaviour in TextEdit
directly. When in TextEdit, go under the Edit menu to Substitutions and
check/uncheck the substitutions that are affecting your productivity. There’s
Smart Quotes, the double-dash problem and apostrophe stuff that can be set.
Yes, this took me a bit to figure out because I’d copy some long Terminal
command from TextEdit and it would screw up in Terminal or Apple Remote
Desktop. This fixed it all.

I got a notice for a Yosemite update available, and downloaded and installed
it, then repaired permissions. It informed that that my Mac was being set up
for iCloud, and when I went to system preferences and expanded the iCloud
section, VoiceOver identified the “services group.” In that group was one area
of the screen which, when the VO cursor was put there, made a sort of
gobble-gobble noise, which caused VO to either crash or become locked up. This
weird noise seems to go on forever and doesn’t seem to indicate anything
useful. Anyone got one of these weird screen zones, and if so what is it? :)

Re: how to remove user profile and all content on the mac?

2014-11-29 Thread Joanne Chua
Hi, thanks so much for all the reply. I've took the easy solution,
brought it to Apple Store, and have them do it for me. Like Chris
said, it took less than 10 seconds for them to get it done and
reinstall os10.10 on it.
As usual, i'm very happy with the after sales service that i got from Apple.

Thanks so much for all the help and suggestion.

The actual formatting process only takes a few seconds. Generally you'll
want to boot in recovery mode which runs a separate stripped down
version of the OS, bring up disk utility, format the drive and then
install a fresh copy of OSX. You'll find lots of details on each of
these in the list archives but feel free to ask if you can't dig that up.

OT: WebEx

2014-11-29 Thread Ezzie Bueno
Hello, friends:

I appologize for the off-topic message; however, I'm not sure where
else to turn with my question regarding WebEx. Do any of you have any
experience using WebEx? (WebEx is a platform used to hold meetings
online, where calls are not dropped--unlike Skype and FaceTime.) I'm
taking music lessons online, and my instructor prefers WebEx over any
other platform. I had a hard time connecting to the meeting that she
started, as the buttons were unlabeled.
Is there a work-around for being able to join meetings on WebEx? Or
should I inform my instructor that WebEx will not work out for me?
Any help/feedback is appreciated.

Thanks! :-)
