Re: audio hijack pro help.

2015-01-28 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Actually, it's every bit worth it considering all you can do with Audio Hijack.
Also, as far as I can see, there's nothing to stop you from continuing to use
the latest version of audio hijack pro 2 unless and until it will no longer do
what you want done but audio hijack 3 will. I'm still using audio hijack 2, the
latest version of 2, and it is still working fine for me in what I am doing
right now. So while I do plan to upgrade eventually, I see no need to
frantically rush to do it. Also, if you didn't have a key for the earlier
application, you were greatly handicapped because white noise overlays your
recordings after a few minutes so if you used it before but didn't have a
license you probably weren't doing much with it.

Re: iTunes folders

2015-01-28 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
Wouldn’t it be possible to drag and drop with voiceover?
I’v seen such feature but don’t know how it works.
/A
 27 jan 2015 kl. 00:13 skrev Tim Kilburn kilbu...@me.com:

 Hi,

It is actually a very clean system if you let iTunes manage the organization
of things like it’s meant to do. That is,

 • There are folders in your home directory like Desktop, Documents, Music,
Pictures, Movies etc. These are built-in folders meant for things like
 iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie etc.

 • within the Music folder, as mentioned by Sabahattin, there is the parent
iTunes folder which is meant to contain all iTunes related media. So, within
the iTunes parent directory are the sub-directories for iTunes Library
database files, Album Artwork and the iTunes Media folder. This iTunes Media
folder logically, contains all the iTunes related media files including your
music, movies, TV Shows, Ring Tones, Audio Books etc.

 • If you allow iTunes to do its magic, it will place all media in the
appropriate locations keeping everything neat and tidy. Anything that
happens to be mis-labelled such as a ripped movie or TV Show can be fixed
from within the Get Info dialog in iTunes itself and the app will clean up
 some more.

 • Third party apps that you use to rip media often place things in other
locations, not necessarily logical to iTunes. For example, your movie
ripping app places the ripped movies or TV shows all into the Movies folder
in your home directory. This Movies folder is actually meant for iMovie or
other media creation kinds of apps.

 • You can certainly import these ripped movies into iTunes and, as long as
you let iTunes do its OCD organizational thing, it will make a copy in the
appropriate location within the iTunes Media world, and life will be good.
Once that import is done, you can delete the original copy from the Movies
 folder.

 • In the sighted world, one would have dragged the movie or TV Show into the
“Automatically Add to iTunes” folder within the iTunes Media folder and no
extra deleting would need to be performed. In the VO world, you could cmd-c
to Copy the movie/TV Show, then cmd-option-v to Move it into the
“Automatically Add to iTunes” folder and the same thing would happen without
the need for the extra step of deleting the media file from the original
 location.

Most problems occur when we try to out-think iTunes and do things in a
different manner than iTunes is meant to. Not to say that this isn’t
possible, it just means that you occasionally will have some issues when
managing iTunes media in other ways.

 Hope this makes some sense.

Setting a hotspot in ibooks while reading a page

2015-01-28 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

I'm reading a book in ibooks, and I wish to pause reading a particular page to
check a reference or word in some other application or in Safari. But when I
return to ibooks, I'm placed again at the top of the page and I have to read
the same text again to return to the spot I was reading. By the way, I use a
Braille display to read in ibooks. Is there a way of setting a temporary
hotspot in ibooks to return to the very word on which I paused reading? It's
such a time waster to have to read the same text over and over

Any tips?

Audio Menu works great with regular earpods.

Re: Audio Hijack 3 help

2015-01-28 Thread Robert Cole
Thank you for the podcast.
I got it to work.
Now, can the sessions be backed up in case I need to reinstall?
and how do I rename the recorder block from mp3 to mixed record?

Thanks,

Re: Audio Hijack 3 help

2015-01-28 Thread Alex Hall
I'm not sure about renaming, but I think record blocks get their names from
their file formats. As to backing up session, here's the response I got on
Twitter directly from the company:
Sessions can be exported imported. However, it requires drag and drop - we’re
working to make it accessible and discoverable.

So, yes they can, but not currently with VoiceOver.

Very Urgent, Please Respond ASAP, Various MacBook Problems

2015-01-28 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi all. I need some help right away. I came back to the computer with the
battery drained. I plug it in and I thought it would resume to where I was in
it. But instead, it rebooted completely, Apple screen and all. The first
problem is that when it's booting up, the screen is very bright. It seems like
the brightness is at 100% when it boots up. Also, when it booted up, the light
that indicates that the display was asleep was on. So with that, the monitor
kept falling asleep after waiting for a minute to boot up. I corrected the
monitor and the sleep light not syncing by closing the lid and now everything
is normal on that end, however the display when booting is still very bright.
The 2nd issue I encountered is in disk utility when in recovery mode. I did a
permissions repair and I got the following message in the first result:
Warning: SUID File
system/library/coreservices/remotemanagement/ardagent.app/contents/macos/ardagent
has been modified and will not be repaired. Should I be worried about this and
if so how do I fix it?
So my two problems are the screen brightness at boot, how do I fix that and if
that SUID file will cause problems in my system, how do I fix that? Thanks for
any answers you may have.

Or, you could just set the mouse to always follow the voiceover cursor, then
it’s right there, just do a click, that’s how I have mine set because some web

would be no way to access those menus.

Re: iTunes folders

2015-01-28 Thread The Believer
I believe I just used command-v to paste both music and movies into
the automatically add folder and all that is fine in iTunes. It actually
went quite fast compared to my previous failed attmetps.

But am unable to add a couple audio books I had bought and which are
on both iPhone and iPad. Automatically add does not do it and neihter
does Transfer Purchases. Went to the iTunes Store and found old books I
do not want, but the two do not show up.

I got both devices synced to the Mac now (used Windows before) but
its not clear why the books are not in the iTunes library. If I can get
this fixed I can move to another project.

The important caveat is that when you put stuff into the Automatically Add to
iTunes folder, you must do so atomically, i.e. move, not copy. You can do so
using the Command-C to copy, then Command-Option-V to move strategy. I must
admit that I find myself using Terminal more and more for simply moving items
from Downloads into the auto-add folder, though if I thought about it, there'd
be a way--if tedious--to do it exclusively using the Finder.

It is OK to tell iTunes, using the Add to Library option, to add your existing
Music folder in your Home folder; sometimes when the library gets corrupted you
can do that to simply restore access to all your media. This is also a great
way to reveal duplicates. iTunes never adds to its catalog any media file that
it already knows about, so this operation is completely safe.

Re: Turbo Tax for 2014

2015-01-28 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
I realize this is another organization than the one I dealt with before, but I
must say that I have had less than satisfactory results using the web version
of electronic filing. I think it is easier for some people than others,
especially if you have more complications on a return and have to go back and
fix things. In this case, the program is saving the file on my computer. The
only trouble is, I can't figure out how to get back to put in some of my
business expenses. The program asked me for some of them, but then I was going
to have to get the paid version. (Those of us with certain types of expenses
have to do that, whether we file with a web version or not.) I found that out
last year.

A lot of people won't have to pay, whether they file on the web versions or
not, but that doesn't apply to me. Lucky me.

Gigi

Re: Turbo Tax for 2014

2015-01-28 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys
I want to give some of you a hint about something with Turbo Tax just in case
some of you have to go what I just did. It works fine on this, but it takes a
while to figure out if you don't know. If you are inputting a Schedule C
information and you get to the business expenses and press the start button, VO
doesn't tell you always that you have hit into the edit section to put in your
expense. If you press the start or update button, you to put in your expenses
right there. I figured this out when VO finally said EDIT TEXT. It doesn't
hebbp to tab around because it doesn't tell you what you landed on.

Maybe I better stop working since my brain is getting tired. I like to start on
my taxes early in case I have a problem.

I downloaded it free from the App Store, and it works really great so far.
It let me save the file without crashing VoiceOver like what happened to me

Anything that is a warning and not an error shouldn't be a problem. Also, while
you can repair disk permissions in recovery mode, I never do that unless
there's some kind of problem though it doesn't hurt and occasionally may even

Hi all. I need some help right away. I came back to the computer with the

problem is that when it's booting up, the screen is very bright.

Re: iTunes folders

2015-01-28 Thread Cheryl Homiak
You can use cmd-v but cmd-o still works as far as I know in iTunes on the Mac;
then you navigate to what you want to add to your library.

As for audiobooks, I am a little confused. Are these books on your iPhone
and iPad only or are they on your computer? The reason I ask is that you
mention automatically add which would make me think they are on your
computer but you also mention transfer purchases which I think means they
are on your iPad or iPhone. In most cases, you can add an audiobook with
cmd-o but then might have to go into options with the cmd-i (getinfo) dialog
and change it to audiobook. But I do remember there was a thread not too
long ago about some kind of problem with iTunes audiobooks but I don't
remember the substance since I rarely buy audiobooks from iTunes.

You also mention going to the iTunes store but of course books there wouldn't
be ones you bought unless you are looking in purchases; this is probably what
you meant. You would probably have to choose the music radio button and also
the my music radio button in the next group of radio buttons or at least not
have the itunes store radio button selected. Then under more would be
audiobooks and then to the right of that the my audiobooks radio button. That
should bring up all your audiobooks. Maybe you already knew all this but I
thought because I had questions about what you wrote I would post this anyway.

iPhone and iPad. Automatically add does not do it and does Transfer
Purchases. Went to the iTunes Store and found old books I do not want, but the

The important caveat is that when you put stuff into the Automatically Add to
iTunes folder, you must do so atomically, i.e. move, not copy. You can do so
using the Command-C to copy, then Command-Option-V to move strategy. I must
admit that I find myself using Terminal more and more for simply moving items
from Downloads into the auto-add folder, though if I thought about it,
there'd be a way--if tedious--to do it exclusively using the Finder.

It is OK to tell iTunes, using the Add to Library option, to add your
existing Music folder in your Home folder; sometimes when the library gets
corrupted you can do that to simply restore access to all your media. This
is also a great way to reveal duplicates. iTunes never adds to its catalog
any media file that it already knows about, so this operation is completely
 safe.

Re: Turbo Tax for 2014

2015-01-28 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi again guys
I know I said I was going to stop working, but I am stubborn. So when a program
gives me grief I usually stick with it to the bitter end. In this case, there
is one page, (the one I mentioned earlier), that is a problem. I stand
corrected that VO always puts you in the right place to type in your business
expenses. After much frustration, here is what I finally had to do on this one
page. As far as I can see at this moment, this is the only thing that is giving
me real trouble.

If you land on a business expense, get to where it says the money amount with
Vo right arrow. Then press the tab key for the start or update button. Type
space it. Then when it says the money amount or 0 or whatever it says at that
point, press the tab key again. Then you hear edit text. After you put your
expense, then you have to get to the Continue button. Now maybe can VO to right
arrow to it, but I finally got desperate and searched for it with VO f. I did
that because the thing wasn’t working before. It might be that if I had only
pressed the tab key when I heard the amount it would have worked.

I am glad that I am not using the web site. This is because if I have
difficulty then I’m having their computer hang up on me.

VO doesn't tell you always that you have hit into the edit section to put in

Re: iTunes folders

Cheryl,
Here is what I see. On Windows. the iTunes library in the user
folder contains a Books subfolder. Once Tim gave me the correct steps to
move my media to the Mac, all of it went where things should go except
the books.

After I managed to sync my iDevices to the Mac, I figured the books
would be in the Books subfolder too on the Mac.

But perhaps books are treated differently. I have not found any
answers yet. I have only bought maybe 3, still prefer to do recreational
reading in braille.

If nothing else, I am becoming very proficient with my Mac. (grins)

As for audiobooks, I am a little confused. Are these books on your iPhone and iPad only or are they
on your computer? The reason I ask is that you mention automatically add which would
make me think they are on your computer but you also mention transfer purchases which I
think means they are on your iPad or iPhone. In most cases, you can add an audiobook with cmd-o but
then might have to go into options with the cmd-i (getinfo) dialog and change it to audiobook. But
I do remember there was a thread not too long ago about some kind of problem with iTunes audiobooks
but I don't remember the substance since I rarely buy audiobooks from iTunes.

You also mention going to the iTunes store but of course books there wouldn't be ones you
bought unless you are looking in purchases; this is probably what you meant. You would
probably have to choose the music radio button and also the my music radio button in the
next group of radio buttons or at least not have the itunes store radio button selected.
Then under more would be audiobooks and then to the right of that the my
audiobooks radio button. That should bring up all your audiobooks. Maybe you already knew
all this but I thought because I had questions about what you wrote I would post this
anyway.

admit that I find myself using Terminal more and more for simply moving items
from Downloads into the auto-add folder, though if I thought about it, there'd
be a way--if tedious--to do it exclusively using the Finder.

 Hi,

It is actually a very clean system if you let iTunes manage the
organization of things like it's meant to do. That is,

. There are folders in your home directory like Desktop, Documents, Music,
Pictures, Movies etc. These are built-in folders meant for things like
iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie etc.

. within the Music folder, as mentioned by Sabahattin, there is the parent
iTunes folder which is meant to contain all iTunes related media. So,
within the iTunes parent directory are the sub-directories for iTunes
Library database files, Album Artwork and the iTunes Media folder. This
iTunes Media folder logically, contains all the iTunes related media files
including your music, movies, TV Shows, Ring Tones, Audio Books etc.

. If you allow iTunes to do its magic, it will place all media in the
appropriate locations keeping everything neat and tidy. Anything that
happens to be mis-labelled such as a ripped movie or TV Show can be fixed
from within the Get Info dialog in iTunes itself and the app will clean up
some more.

. Third party apps that you use to rip media often place things in other
locations, not necessarily logical to iTunes. For example, your movie
ripping app places the ripped movies or TV shows all into the Movies folder
in your home directory. This Movies folder is actually meant for iMovie or
other media creation kinds of apps.

. You can certainly import these ripped movies into iTunes and, as long as
you let iTunes do its OCD organizational thing, it will make a copy in the
appropriate location within the iTunes Media world, and life will be good.
Once that import is done, you can delete the original copy from the Movies
folder.

. In the sighted world, one would have dragged the movie or TV Show into
the Automatically Add to iTunes folder within the iTunes Media folder and
no extra deleting would need to be performed. In the VO world, you could
cmd-c to Copy the movie/TV Show, then cmd-option-v to Move it into the
Automatically Add to iTunes folder and the same thing would happen without
the need for the extra step of deleting the media file from the original
location.

Most problems occur when we try to out-think iTunes and do things in a
different manner than iTunes is meant to. Not to say that this isn't
possible, it just means that you occasionally will have some issues when
managing iTunes media in other ways.

 Hope this makes some sense.

Re: iTunes folders

2015-01-28 Thread Cheryl Homiak
There wouldn't be any advantage that I can think of to drag and drop. You have
a mechanism within iTunes for importing music that is in other places. Besides,
you can physically move other folders into iTunes but iTunes won't necessarily
incorporate those folders into its use just because you physically stick
folders inside of Music/iTunes. You shouldn't really have a messy setup in
iTunes unless some of your music or videos are being misidentified and you can
fix that, as has been mentioned, with getinfo. If you actually open the
Music/iTunes/iTunes Media in Finder you will see that you do have a separate
folder, for instance, for home videos so they don't need to be mixed in with
your music. I would think that straightening out any misidentified items would
be preferable to starting all over again. Even if you start over again, iTunes
is still going to reorganize according to how it identifies unless you have
that unchecked in preferences so I don't think you are going to get different
results by starting over. Just remember not to just physically move items into
the folders and then expect them to be done correctly by that action.

Hi,

There are actually two methods for Drag Drop for VO users.

1. VO-comma to mark an item for Drag Drop and VO-period to drop the marked
item. This method appears to depend on visibility of an object/item and has
other limits with respect to what sorts of items can be picked up or marked.

2. The original method for Drag Drop uses VO-shift-cmd-space to do the
mouse-down action and the same key combination will release the mouse when
you’re in the location you wish it dropped. This method also requires some
cursor tracking toggling in addition to moving mouse focus to the VO cursor.
The key combination is often awkward and also doesn’t work in all situations.

For the most part, when it comes to moving things around in the GUI world, it
is often much less problematic to use the Copy/Paste or Copy/Move commands.
Now, these aren’t always an option, so, attempting the GUI Drag Drop with VO
is one option you can attempt.

Re: iTunes folders

2015-01-28 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu

I was thinking of trying to get a full-blown GNOME desktop environment
running on this machine, as I am familiar with that environment. Doing some

research, I can see that their is an open source version of the Xorg X11
Window system that I can install. Ideally, I would love the greatest and
latest stuff viable from the GNOME Project which at present, is Gnome
3.4.X. However, I think we have some problems. If I'm wrong in these
assumptions, feel free to correct me where necessary. If memory serves,
GNOME 3.x has some dependencies on systems, which is Linux-specific. That
is, their is at present, no BSD-compatible system implementation. I don't
believe that system needs to be running, however I do believe that core
system library functions are now dependencies. Does it make sense to
install a copy of VMware Fusion and install a copy of Debian into the guest

VM? If I do go this route, is their anything I need to be concerned about
in Fusion specifically? Note that I have a license for VMware Workstation.

Will I have to purchase an additional license for Fusion?
  Second question
Does it make sense to install the GNU-specific tools? In my opinion, they
are simply just better than the implementations provided by BSD. I could
install them out of the way, into for example, /usr/local/bin, as that way,

it won't conflict with software that is under version control via whatever
package management system that OS X uses to manage updates.

Re: Some more Questions

2015-01-28 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
While I haven't installed Linux under VMWare, I would think that would
be easier than doing it via bootcamp. A lot of the setup for linux seems
to revolve around partitioning and bootup setup, usually assuming that
Linux is the only thing running on the box. While it's possible to set
things up just right to make a multi-boot machine, a virtual machine
gives the appearance that it's a dedicated piece of hardware, so no
accidentally mangling the wrong partition and such. You also have the
advantage that you can access online docs and such on the mac side and
then just flip to vmware to try stuff rather than going all-in with a
boot cycle into Linux. Plus you can use vmware's snapshots to keep a
working instance to fall back in case the experiment fails. Worst case
is you just take the virtual machine file and put it in the trash. To
add to the fun, you can even find pre-installed unix virtual machines
which you can just download and use.

Hello,
Wondeful suggestion, though with Bootcamp, you'll have to repartition
the drive, wich IMHO is overkill for this situation. So, it looks
like VMware is the easiest way to accomplish this task. Not to
mention, its a lot quicker. That's if Linux is even supported in a
Bootcamp environment. As I recall, its designed to aid the
installation of Windows, and we don't know if it modifies the system
EFI partition. Simply too many unknowns.

What about just install it to bootcam instead?
How often that you need to run Linux and Mac OS side by side...

Just my thoughts

 Hello again,
FFirst of all, thanks for all the responses to my other
questions. Really

 helped a lot
I was thinking of trying to get a full-blown GNOME desktop
environment
running on this machine, as I am familiar with that
environment. Doing some

research, I can see that their is an open source version of the
Xorg X11
Window system that I can install. Ideally, I would love the
greatest and
latest stuff viable from the GNOME Project which at present, is
Gnome
3.4.X. However, I think we have some problems. If I'm wrong
in these
assumptions, feel free to correct me where necessary. If
memory serves,
GNOME 3.x has some dependencies on systems, which is
Linux-specific. That
is, their is at present, no BSD-compatible system
implementation. I don't
believe that system needs to be running, however I do believe
that core
system library functions are now dependencies. Does it make
sense to
install a copy of VMware Fusion and install a copy of Debian
into the guest

VM? If I do go this route, is their anything I need to be
concerned about
in Fusion specifically? Note that I have a license for VMware
Workstation.

Will I have to purchase an additional license for Fusion?
 Second question
Does it make sense to install the GNU-specific tools? In my
opinion, they
are simply just better than the implementations provided by
BSD. I could
install them out of the way, into for example, /usr/local/bin,
as that way,

it won't conflict with software that is under version control
via whatever
package management system that OS X uses to manage updates.
