Re: growl stopped working with the new Skype.

2015-02-22 Thread BBS
Hi Eric. Actually, they stopped supporting Growl a few months ago. This is
why I'm using an older version of Skype that does support Growl. If in fact
they do tell me to upgrade, I'll probably get rid of Skype altogether as I
don't have anyone to talk to on there anymore.

Subject: growl stopped working with the new Skype.

ever since MS updated their Skype a couple of weeks back, I no longer hear
speech in the text frame automatically. Also, it appears that the growl
checkbox was removed from the application configure dialog for Skype. Any
clues as to how I can work around this? According to system
preferences/growl, the proper items are enabled.

so, am I missing something here or did MS break some of the accessibility
for older OS X versions running current version Skype?

yeah. there are a couple of different formats to choose from. I was careful
about choosing audio cd and, actually,it played but it was probably going about
twice as fast as it should. I didn’t even know that was possible. lol.

Re: the Burn app

2015-02-22 Thread Jessica Moss
When you burn CD's, what format do you have it set to? You need to have the
setting on "audio CD," not mp3, or chances of it playing elsewhere, may be slim.
I accedently had mine set that way in Itunes, and burned several CD's to give
to Mom, then they wouldn't play in her car stereo, because it was so old, and
same with the stereo Hannah has in her room.
So after I figured out what setting my Itunes was on, I had to go back and
make new ones, then went in and tested them on her stereo, and they worked
fine, so you may want to give that a try.

Re: the Burn app

2015-02-22 Thread Jessica Moss
Where do you find that? I might like to use it on occasion if I want to burn a
quick CD for Hannah to play in her room, but don't want to go through my whole
Itunes library in order to do it; also have a huge movie collection on my
computer, and she has a portible dvd player, so that would be great for me to
put those on to a DVD so she can just watch them when she wants and I don't
constantly have to pull them up on the computer for her.

Yep, both httrack and wget are options for OS X, and they’re both command-line
accessible. I’d choose httrack first, as that’s generally better at this sort
of thing, but wget will work also if the site is not too complex and/or you
just want the static files.

RE: Audio described movies

2015-02-22 Thread Jamie Pauls
Hello, all:

There are a couple audio-described movies available in the iTunes store but I'm
honestly not sure what search term I used to find them. Apple refers to video
description, which is actually a more appropriate term in my opinion. I do not
know if there has been a major release of content that takes advantage of the
video description toggle that is available on iOS 8 and the Apple TV. I
understand that some content has been located in the wild, as it were, but I
don't know what titles were found.

Re: the Burn app

2015-02-22 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Had that happen to me too. The thing you want to watch out for is that files
you burn to CD using Burn have got to be 44.1KHZ with an over sampling
frequency of 16 bits. You want to make sure that Burn CD is the option you
check. Also, you may find it best to compile the tracks you want to burn by
adding them one by one beginning with the first track. Now, that should do
okay.

There used to be a version of wget that came with the macintosh for use on the
terminal. The only close examples now seem to be perl scripts for downloading
sites either of lap-request or lap-download.

I could not tell from a quick review if either of these does recursive
downloads of a site.

i photo i tunes question

2015-02-22 Thread Jean
Hello All:
Since updating to Yosemite, both I photo and i tunes open automatically every
time I connect my i phone. I know I saw an option to prevent this somewhere
but can’t find it now. Can anyone tell me how to stop these two programs from
opening?

Re: Scraping an Entire Website

2015-02-22 Thread Aman Singer
Hello Jeff,

You might like to try HTTrack
http://www.httrack.com/
to the best of my knowledge, there is a command line version of this
software but I'm not sure whether it will work with Terminal
accessibly. I have no reason to think it won't, you understand, I
simply haven't tried it. The Windows version is a pain in the neck to
use, but the command line isn't too bad on Windows.

Re: Scraping an Entire Website

2015-02-22 Thread BobH.
Strikes me the provider wasn't trying too hard, for whatever reason. I had
one like that, just paid, then they screwed it and I took site and domain
elsewhere, but lost a years service I'd paid for. You can recover domain
names if you still have the Nominet details one gets when buying domain
names.

Really, all I want is the images, so I'm okay if some dynamic text is lost.

I know that this client has been working with their provider and they
haven't been able to recover the password. As a result, we've had to set up
a new domain name and whole new site. He just doesn't want to lose the
images on the old site, and he wants to incorporate them into the new
design.

growl stopped working with the new Skype.

2015-02-22 Thread Eric Oyen
ever since MS updated their Skype a couple of weeks back, I no longer hear
speech in the text frame automatically. Also, it appears that the growl
checkbox was removed from the application configure dialog for Skype. Any clues
as to how I can work around this? According to system preferences/growl, the
proper items are enabled.

so, am I missing something here or did MS break some of the accessibility for
older OS X versions running current version Skype?

Re: Trying to delete a copy of an app

2015-02-22 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi again Stacy
I know this is going to sound elementary, and you probably have already done
it. Have you opened dropbox from the application folder, and then on purpose
done command queue? Failing that, have you gone into the menu and done quit? I
say this because I had a program once that refused to let me do command queue,
and I was only able to quit it by going to the menu and choosing the quit
option. I know that sounds weird, but it worked.

Re: Mac Mini in Trouble

2015-02-22 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

1. Have you used it before or is it brand new out of the box?

2. That key combination is unnecessary at this point and possibly flawed.

3. As mentioned, if it is brand new out of the box, then first, unplug it,
leave it unplugged for about 30 seconds, plug it back in, wait about 10
seconds, then plug it back in. Wait another 10 seconds then hit the power
button to turn it on. Wait 30 seconds to a minute, then press cmd-f5 to turn
on VoiceOver and follow the setup prompts.

4. If you have used it before and this is a new issue, what kind of keyboard
are you using? Any other devices connected?

Re: Tip: emacs functionallity in Pages

2015-02-22 Thread Barry Hadder
In case anyone wasn’t able to git the attachment, here is the
DefaultKeyBinding.dict.

{
"^y" = "yankAndSelect:"; //control-y
"^\@" = "setMark:"; //control-@
"^w" = "deleteToMark:"; //control-w
"^x" = { //control-x control-x
"^x" = "selectToMark:";
};
"^ " = "setMark:"; //control-space
"~f" = "moveWordForward:"; //option-f
"~b" = "moveWordBackward:"; //option-b
}

For anyone who may be interested and familiar with emacs, I’ve found out how to
enable much of readline and emacs functionality in edit fields through out the
system including pages. This includes features like the kill ring and regions.
Of course control-k and control-y are already there, but this will add much
more.
To enable this, do the following:
1. Turn on the kill ring by typing the following in terminal.
defaults write -g NSTextKillRingSize -string 4
You can set that to a larger size. I believe emacs defaults to 16. With this
set greater than 1 and control-y set to yankAndSelect: you can cut text with on
of the kill commands i.e. control-k, and cycle thru the cut text with control-y.

2. Optionally, you can set the control-u repeat count binding by typing:
defaults write -g NSRepeatCountBinding -string “^u”
3. In ~/Library, create a folder called KeyBindings. If one is allready
there, than skip this step.
4. copy the attached DefaultKeyBinding.dict file to the folder.

Note that I only put a few emacs key bindings in this file. It is very easy
for anyone to add much more. The two documentation sources I used are the
Cocoa event handling guide
https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/EventOverview/TextDefaultsBindings/TextDefaultsBindings.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/2468-611005

and the NSResponder class reference
https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Cocoa/Reference/ApplicationKit/Classes/NSResponder_Class/index.html

.
Another good source for selectors to bind to that may be used is the NSText
class reference.

I remember a thread on this list regarding a problem copying text broken by a
page boundary. I believe that there may be something hear that can be helpful.
I have successfully copied text across pages by setting a mark on the first
page, then moving the cursor to an area on the second page and using control-x
control-x select text from the mark to the point and use normal copy and paste.
I have allso tried using the kill ring by killing a line of text on page 1 with
control-k, moving to the second page killing another line of text, then pasting
the first line with control-u 2 control-y and the second line with control-u 4
control-y.

Enjoy.

Hi Daniela,

Here is a direct dropbox link:

.
I hope you find it helpful. I’ve had very good success with it. I’m also
pasting the script below.

(* This script enables Voiceover users to set the name of a table in Numbers.
Tab to a table on the active sheet and run the script.
*)

tell application "Numbers"
set tableList to table of active sheet of document of front window
repeat with aTable in tableList
if (selection range of aTable is not missing value) then
set tablename to name of aTable
set dialogresult to display dialog "table name" default
answer tablename
set name of aTable to text returned of dialogresult
end if
end repeat

end tell

Mac Mini in Trouble

2015-02-22 Thread Bill Gallik

Help!!!

My new Mac Mini seems to be totally messed up.

When I try to boot, I hear nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Then, after executing a while pressing the power
button to reboot, the start-up chord plays -- again, again, again and again.

Can anybody offer any suggestions (other than taking my Mac in for repair).
At this point, my plan is to get it in to an "Apple Hospital" to get well,
but if I can avoid that I would certainly would prefer that.
