Re: Night Owl

2015-04-20 Thread Alex Hall
I've actually never seen that. When I leave Night Owl, then come back to it, a
press of either up or down arrow (Quick nav off) will cause VO to say how many
rows were added, then I can keep arrowing up through the newer tweets. Perhaps
try using j and k to navigate, instead of the arrows? Again, be sure Quick Nav
is off no matter what. Also, though this shouldn't make a difference, go to
Night Owl's preferences and be sure that anything about scrolling to top is not
checked.

Re: Night Owl

2015-04-20 Thread Alex Hall
I'll paste the text below. This is the Markdown text I keep locally, so you'll
see some links and bits of syntax here and there. It's quite readable, though,
and isn't HTML or anything that will be a headache. That said, the Unhand can
go online, and AppleVis should be pretty nice to mobile devices, so if you want
heading navigation you can try loading the link I sent on the Sense.

###What Is Night Owl?
[Night
Owl](http://www.applevis.com/apps/mac/social-networking/night-owl-aka-yorufukurou)
is the only accessible Twitter client for the Mac, or at least the most
popular among VoiceOver users. With it, you can retweets, manage lists, send
direct messages, save searches, and much more. While most of the app is
relatively simple, some parts can be a bit confusing, and there are some
undocumented shortcuts and features. This guide will walk you through the
basics of the app, and explained most of the features. If audio is your thing,
AppleVis has has a
[Night Owl
podcast.](http://www.applevis.com/podcast/episodes/introduction-yorufukurou-mac-twitter-client-actually-works-voiceover)

This tutorial assumes that you have a basic level of familiarity with
VoiceOver. You don't need to know any advanced commands, but the
basics--navigating the screen, activating buttons and pop-up menu's,
interacting, and so on--are required. Of course, you will also need to already
have a Twitter Account activated–you need to know that accounts user name and
password in order to login. If you don't yet have an account, creating one is
simple and free. To learn more about twitter, and to create your own account,
visit the
[Twitter website.](http://www.twitter.com)

###Signing In
When you first launch Night Owl, you will be prompted to sign into your Twitter
account. If you are not, or if you are already signed into one account but want
to sign into a different one, open Night Owl's preferences with command-comma,
choose the accounts button from the toolbar, then find and activate the Ad
button. You will be taken to a webpage where you enter your Twitter username
and password, and Then press enter to sign in. Assuming your credentials were
correct, you will be asked to grant Night Owl access to your Twitter account;
do so, and you will be returned to the main window. Now that you have
successfully signed in, it's time to see how this app works.

###the Main Window
This is where you read and manage tweets, compose new tweets, find users, and
more. There are several important things here, and we'll examine them one at a
time. To make things easy, we'll go from the top of the window and use vo-right
to move from item to item. Press vo-shift-home (vo-shift-fn-left on Apple
keyboards with no Home key) to get to the top, and you'll land on a text label
telling you the current tab (which is probably Timeline) and the name of the
account you're using. Press vo-right to get to….

The Toolbar
The first important thing you'll find is a toolbar. Interact with it and you'll
see buttons for viewing a user's timeline or the conversation, marking a tweet
as read, and more. While you can certainly use all these buttons if you like,
all of them also have keyboard shortcuts which you will probably find much more
convenient. Stop interacting with this toolbar once you've reviewed it, and
press vo-right. You'll next come to…

The Drawer
Once you land on this item, which VoiceOver identifies simply as Drawer,
interact with it to explore the contents. The Drawer is where information and
management tools for the author of the focused tweet will appear. For example,
you can follow/unfollow, block, or report the user; you can view their profile,
location, and picture; you can see how many followers they have, how many
people follow them, and how may tweets they've posted; and you can see details
on the tweet in focus over in the list.

The one item in here with which you can actually interact is the User Action
Menu. Once you activate this menu, you have several options, all of which are
self-explanatory--Reply, Retweet, Direct Message, etc. The Following Status
submenu is where you go to follow, un-follow, or block a user, and it also
shows you if the user is following you (you'll need to vo-up arrow to see that
last one; plain old arrow keys will skip over it as it is dimmed). Once you're
done, stop interacting with the Drawer, vo-right, and land on…

New Tweet
There are three items associated with writing tweets, and they start just after
the Drawer. Note that you may see an item called just image first; I have no
idea what this is, and it has no label or help tag. Anyway, the first item
we're interested in is an edit field, where you type your tweet. If you are
retweeting with a comment, direct messaging, or replying to a tweet, text will
appear in this field with your cursor at the start or end, as necessary for the
action you're performing. Note that this field is not automatically

Hi Jürgen. In Nightowl pressing the spacebar will take you to the oldest

browse tweets. What I do when launching the app, is hit control 2 to go to
my replys tab. If you get through all unread tweets in a tweet, spacebar
will take you to the first unread tweet in the next tab. So pressing
spacebar moves me first to replies, direct mentions, all my list tabs, and
finally my main timeline. When reading through my main timeline, the
spacebar moves me past tweets I may have already read in other tabs.
 Hopefully this made sense.

2015-04-20 Thread Brent Harding
I wonder if others had the bug come back several times after doing the sign
out and back in drill? I found that erasing the data under storage
management for Netflix had more success, but had to be done every 2 to 4
episodes. The show itself was absolutely well done with some of the better

doesn't. I wonder if it's like the CSR said that Apple Accessibility is the

Re: A question about making headings on different levels with ms word.

2015-04-20 Thread Barry Hadder
Hi Annie,
I have been able to use the outline, but it does have problems.
I prefer Pages over word, but the outline mode is a feature that Pages really
should have. The old one did and I would have thought that they would have
brought it back by now. So, it will be good to have another option.
The main problem I have with Word at the moment is that it doesn’t really
behave and feel like a native OS X app.

Best regards Annie.

You can choose a style such as a heading level by going to the Home tab of
the ribbon area by activating the styles menu and interacting with the styles

You can easily assign a keystroke to a style in the keyboard preferences in
the tools menu. Just select format in the categories table and then select
the style you want in the other table. To apply heading 1, the current
 shortcut is command-option-1.

You can brows the heading levels using the outline view, but note that it is

haven’t found a keystroke that will work like on the PC side. I did locate a
list of keystrokes for Word 2016, but the ones for heading styles don’t work
for me. It would be nice if I had a keystroke to evoke the various heading
styles It would make my work more efficient. On another note, have you been
able to create an envelope or label? Since I’m coming from the PC side, the
dialog box for this on the Mac side is not as straight forward to me. I
struggled for a while trying to make a simple mailing label the other night,
but was not successful in the printing of it. It came out blank. I was able
to print a label on the PC side in Word 2010, so I know that I’m not out of
ink. Again, thanks for the tip.

 Cheers,
 Eileen

No, I only went to Silver Light as a last ditch desperate effort to get it
working. I have literally spent a couple of hours trying to get the darned
audio description on episode 2. It is reliably working on episodes 1 and 3; I
haven’t tried any other episodes yet; there does not seem to be any point.
Audio description is not showing up for episode 2, no matter what I do. Close
and reopen the app. Sign out and sign back in. Erase and reinstall the app.
Play an episode where it works and then switch to episode 2.
Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

Audio Description from Netflix largely an epic fail

2015-04-20 Thread Christine Grassman

I called Netflix Customer Service and the woman I spoke with was very friendly
and sympathetic, and essentially said that the only instructions they had was
the article I posted earlier. The audio description for Daredevil is completely
unreliable on my end. I have it working on episodes 1 and 3, but cannot get it
to work on 2. At all. No matter what I do.
I have been fussing around with Silver Light on my MacBook, trying every which
way, trying different browsers and the like to see if I can somehow manage to
find the controls while it is playing to access the subtitles menu, but
absolutely no luck. This is proving to be extremely frustrating for my son, who
really wants to continue to watch Daredevil. They should have never released
this until it was more reliable. Fed up.
All that undeserved positive publicity, certainly at least at this time. I am
grateful they are willing, but this is frankly almost worse than having
nothing, at least under the circumstances I’ve got.

Hi everybody;
Here’s my experience for what it’s worth.
Last week I was able to watch the first 3 episodes on my AppleTV. I did
initially have to sign out and in a couple of times to get it working.
When I tried to watch episode 4 today I could not get it to work. I ended up
calling Netflix, and they told me that audio description is temporarily broken
with regards to AppleTV.
I have not tried yet on IOS.

I know there are ways of running the above synthesiser on a Mac.

 But it's horribly unstable.

Putting aside the Infovox voices are there any text to speech products

Voiceover and tables in Microsoft Word on the mac

2015-04-20 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

I've just tried inserting and navigating a table into a microsoft word document
on my mac. The inserting of the table was easy and accessible. Navigating the
table also seems to work without having to interact with it. I tried using
both tab key and voiceover keys with arrow keys, both seem to let me navigate
the table and Voiceover gives the cell coordinates very well. The only thing
that seems the problem at present is that when I have actually written some
text into a cell and then tried to modify it by deleting some characters,
VoiceOver doesn't give feedback on what letters are deleted. Could someone
confirm this? This is really promising and provided Microsoft can fix some
problems like the one above, we might actually get another word processing app
on the mac that handles tables well. Also page transitions in a document
longer than one page seems fine. I have set my preferences for Word to wrap
text to window in preferences.

I've also just noticed the same behaviour when typing text into text areas on
the feedback page in Microsoft Word. VoiceOver doesn't give me any feedback.
I have to move away from the text area and back to read the entire text.

How do I report any problems with Word and voiceOver to Microsoft?

Andrew

Re: Night Owl

2015-04-20 Thread sadam ahmed
Hello,

Night Owl was updated yesterday.

The release notes claim that some issues relating to account management were
addressed.

You should be running version 2.83.

I echo the sentiments forget any other Twitter client on the desktop.

 2. I’m not able to find a support address except for twitter accounts of the

Re: Maybe a stupid question, but does a web site service like this exist?

2015-04-20 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Hi Chris,
Sorry I don't know. I used to do some contract work for them producing braille
letters, but don't have time anymore. They seem a pretty friendly bunch so
perhaps you could contact them and ask how much it is for one letter.
Sorry I can't help. Braille was more expensive than print, but it wasn't 10
pounds. They might have changed their pricing since I last worked for them.

Cheers

 Importance: High

 Guys,

Even if I have to pay a small fee for this, I'm very much willing to do so
within reason, and am totally 100% prepared to do so.

Here is the very most basic of the situation without going into a lot of
detail. I need to send a letter to someone. The issue is, they do not
check their e-mail hardly at all. This however is a letter that needs to
be written. Again, I would much rather not go into the specifics. I will
however at least give you this much information... no. It's is not legal
related in any way, and there is absolutely nothing legally binding that
says I cannot write this person. It's nothing like that, as much as it's
just that they most likely 99.999% chance will not see my e-mail. Trust me.
Physically mailing a hard copy letter would be more reliable. I definitely
do have their address. The question that I have is, I don't have a
printer, and even if I did, I don't have a very reliable way to address the
envelope. I'd have to basically have someone help me do so. The thing is,
due to certain circumstances, the people who would help me address the
letter, as well as print it out for me are very very nosy, and have been
known in the past to read my mail, without my prior concent. Yeah, I know,
downright illegal. I'm not even touching that one. The point is of this
message, does anyone know of a web site which would be accessible with
Voiceover that I could use to either A, type my letter directly into the
web site, or B, upload it as a word document, or text document, etc. then
type the address to be sent to, pay a small printing/shipping cost,
securely check out, then have this service basically print and mail the
letter on my behalf. I'd say on average, this letter won't be more than
probably 2, maybe! pushing it, 2 and a half 8 by 11 pages long. We're not
talking a huge huge lengthy letter here.

I don't have very good access to a public library nor post office to ask
for help. I'm kind a in a rural area. Otherwise, I would.

 Does anyone have any thoughts?

 Chris.

Eloquimnce is the main reason I stick with Windows, as it's the only
synth I can clearly understand with my type of hearing loss, for
whatever reason. While I can use the decent braille support already
built in, Eloquince would still be way faster. isn't the current
version of this synth on the Mac server based? meaning that I can't
use it offline, and who knows what info is being shared with the
person running the server?

Hi Jamie and Eileen.

Ok this is a little tricky, I figured it out, but I have two comments.
1 It would be great if we could use some keystrokes.
2. When I have got the heading on e.g. level 2 added, the only way to see it is
a heading on level two is to press voiceOver +t, and when you will get the
fontsizes and you can guess, which level the heading is on, is there a better
way for checking that, and is there a way to navigate between the headings you
have set.

Best regards Annie.

Re: A question about making headings on different levels with ms word.

2015-04-20 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi Jamie,

I was successful in adding a heading 1 level in a doc, but what is missing is
having VO announce what type of style one has used. This is obtained with JAWS
on the PC side. The only way I knew it was applied was using the speak
attribute VO keystroke of VO-T. I know the font size of heading 1 style is 16
ptc. So, I’m not sure if obtaining more description of attributes in a Word doc
is a MS or an Apple glitch. Hence, I guess I will place this on my running bug
list to MS. Hopefully, MS will improve their Mac keystrokes in order for more
advance users of Word will think about making the switch. so far, even with a
learning curve, I am not convinced to use Word on the Mac. To me, it’s very
labor intensive, which would slow down productivity.

Thanks

Eileen again.

Re: A question about making headings on different levels with ms word.

2015-04-20 Thread Barry Hadder
You can choose a style such as a heading level by going to the Home tab of the
ribon area by activating the styles menu and interacting with the styles
gallery.
You can easily assign a keystroke to a style in the keyboard preferences in the
tools menu. Just select format in the categories table and then select the
style you want in the other table. To apply heading 1, the current shortcut is
command-option-1.

You can brows the heading levels using the outline view, but note that it is
buggy at this time.

I know the font size of heading 1 style is 16
ptc. So, I’m not sure if obtaining more description of attributes in a Word doc
is a MS or Apple glitch. Hence, I guess I will place this on my running bug
list to MS. Hopefully, MS will improve their Mac keystrokes inorder for more
advance users of Word will think about making the switch. so far, even with a
learning curve, I am not convinced to use Word on the Mac. To me, it’s very
labor intensive, which would slow down productivity.

Thanks

Eileenagain.

Re: Automatically enabling and disabling Quick Nav when apps gain focus

2015-04-20 Thread David Griffith
Well I achieved precisely this under Mavericks with no problems but to
be honest I disabled all activities when I upgraded to Yosemite as there
was a suggestion that Activities were setting up a Voiceover Performance
lag and I concluded it was no real hardship to press the left and right
cursor keys to turn Quick Nav on and off. It may be then a possibility
that a problem was introduced in Yosemite but I will check later when I
am on my Mac.

But yest in theory there should be no difficulties with setting up
activities to have the status of quick nav disabled or enabled when Mail
or Safari are loaded.

You may have to be more specific about what steps you took in setting up
the activity for us to comment on whether you are doing anything wrong.

Is what I want to do possible, and should I be using activities to try and

l-mail's prices are here:

So in the US it's $1.47 for credit and $2.08 for debit cards for a

I think what you need is

You type in your letter, including address, and they print and send it

I hope this is what you need.

Importance: High

Guys,

Even if I have to pay a small fee for this, I'm very much willing to
do so within reason, and am totally 100% prepared to do so.

Here is the very most basic of the situation without going into a
lot of detail. I need to send a letter to someone. The issue is,
they do not check their e-mail hardly at all. This however is a
letter that needs to be written. Again, I would much rather not go
into the specifics. I will however at least give you this much
information... no. It's is not legal related in any way, and there
is absolutely nothing legally binding that says I cannot write this
person. It's nothing like that, as much as it's just that they most
likely 99.999% chance will not see my e-mail. Trust me. Physically
mailing a hard copy letter would be more reliable. I definitely do
have their address. The question that I have is, I don't have a
printer, and even if I did, I don't have a very reliable way to
address the envelope. I'd have to basically have someone help me do
so. The thing is, due to certain circumstances, the people who would
help me address the letter, as well as print it out for me are very
very nosy, and have been known in the past to read my mail, without
my prior concent. Yeah, I know, downright illegal. I'm not even
touching that one. The point is of this message, does anyone know
of a web site which would be accessible with Voiceover that I could
use to either A, type my letter directly into the web site, or B,
upload it as a word document, or text document, etc. then type the
address to be sent to, pay a small printing/shipping cost, securely
check out, then have this service basically print and mail the
letter on my behalf. I'd say on average, this letter won't be more
than probably 2, maybe! pushing it, 2 and a half 8 by 11 pages
long. We're not talking a huge huge lengthy letter here.

I don't have very good access to a public library nor post office to
ask for help. I'm kind a in a rural area. Otherwise, I would.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Chris.

VoiceOver clicks on the Mac!

2015-04-20 Thread Jose Lomeli
Hello; Listers, since I got my Mac, I accidentally disable the keyboard clicks
when navigating the Dock on the Mac! At the time I was running Mavericks on the
Mac. Now, I am running Yosemite the latest version. How do I enable the
keyboard sounds again? This will be much appreciated a lot!

Hello,
Go to Voiceover utility with VO f8.
Press CMD 6 to get to the sound category.
The first checkbox should say, enable sound effects. VO space to turn this back
on.
HTH.

God bless.

I second that. Espeak would be far better.

Hmm. When you tried it, it worked but you are no longer using it yet you
wish it was supported. This is confusing. I don't want to waste the time
with it if it really isn't useable. However, I do enjoy Eloquence and if it
really worked well, I would use it exclusively on the Mac OS.

I know there are ways of running the above synthesiser on a Mac.

 But it's horribly unstable.

Putting aside the Infovox voices are there any text to speech products

Night Owl

2015-04-20 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi,

is Night Owl the only accessible twitter client for the Mac you know of?

My issues with this app:

1. The timeline scrolls always to the top automatically and it seems to be
insignificant which settings I’ve set. I tried different settings but it had no
impact on this behaviour.
2. I’m not able to find a support address except for twitter accounts of the
developers. But I’m not able to send direct messages to people who don’t follow
me and so there’s no way to reach them.

Any ideas?

All the best
Jürgen
