How To Backup Your Third-Party VoiceOver Accessible iOS 9.x Apps

2015-10-30 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

I am cross-posting this to both V iPhone and Mac Visionaries.

NOTE 1:
This document assume that you do not use the automatic app update feature on
your iOS device.

NOTE 2:
The following applies to those who use an iOS device in conjunction with
iTunes on a computer, only.

As we have all experienced, there are times when updates to an app can break
VoiceOver accessibility.

In iOS 8.x and earlier, assuming that one had previously synchronized with
iTunes on a computer, if an update broke accessibility for a particular app,
one could simply delete the newly updated copy of the app from the iOS
device and then, connect the device to the computer and install the older
version of the app, back to the iOS device.

This was possible because in iOS 8.x and earlier, assuming app WiFi syncing
was not enabled, the synchronization process included copying any newly
downloaded app from the iOS device into the iTunes Library located on the
computer.

As of iOS 9.x, the synchronization process between the iOS device and the
computer, no longer includes copying apps from the device to the computer.

For those of us who rely on VoiceOver accessibility, this new process means
that should an updated app break VoiceOver access, we can no longer restore
an earlier version of the app using the same time-tested method as we have
all come to enjoy.

Before I continue, I urge all of you to please contact Apple and express how
significant this change in the synchronization process affects those of us
who are blind or low vision.

The good news is that there is a simple workaround, so to speak, available
to those of us who want to insure that we always have an accessible copy of
an app.

Just update the app in iTunes before connecting the iOS device. Updating
apps, in iTunes on the computer, actually downloads a full copy of the app
in the .IPA format which, just as always, can be copied to any authorized
iOS compatible device.

Confused? Don't be; the following example should help clarify the process:

[BEGIN EXAMPLE]
DAY ONE:

1.
You're very happy with all of your currently installed apps. Your favorite
app is the Candle Shore BLOG.com app and you don't want to lose VoiceOver
accessibility to it, should it be updated.

2.
You want to make certain that you have a full copy of this accessible
version of the app on your computer, just in case any future updates break
its accessibility.

3.
On your computer, you open iTunes and navigate to the Apps area. You locate
the Candle Shore BLOG.com app and, Click the Update button. This will
update a full copy of the app on your computer to the same version that is
currently on your iOS device. Remember, you will only do this if you like
the current version that is on your iOS device. Because you like to plan
for worse case scenarios, you decide to perform such an update for all of
your mission-critical apps like those having to do with banking, GPS
navigation, etc.

DAY TWO:

1.
Upon checking the App Store, on your iOS device, you discover that there is
an update to the Candle Shore BLOG.com app.

2.
You update the app and discover, to your dismay, that VoiceOver
accessibility has been broken.

3.
You immediately delete the app from your iOS device.

4.
Now, you connect the iOS device to your computer and, from within iTunes,
you install the older, accessible, copy of the app, back to the iOS device,
just as you would have done in iOS 8.x.
[END EXAMPLE]

The bottom line is that if you are currently running iOS 9.x or later, you
should manually update any important apps, on your computer, now, before any
future updates break them.

Mark

Re: Current build of El Capitan.

2015-10-30 Thread Sadam Ahmed
Hi Sabahattin,

Thanks for your feedback. Looks like I’ll be staying put for the moment.

If I had a secondary Mac or Windows computer I might have risked it but as
things stand Yosemite may be the ticket for now.

The ironic thing is that El Capitan was supposedly going to focus on stability.
I guess this didn’t extend to VoiceOver.

Thanks again.

Yours truley,

Subject: Does music purchased on iTunes store on the phone automatically go to
my mac?

I think the answer to this question is probably know, but I thought I would ask
anyway. I generally try to avoid buying music using my phone. But, I just
bought some stuff using the Russian keyboard on my phone and now I'm wondering
how I'm going to get that into my iTunes library on the Mac. I do have iTunes
match also. And I do not have anything in my library that is not something I
purchased or ripped. Should I suppose that the things I bought are going to
show up on my mac? Or do I have to transfer the purchases using iTunes on the
Mac?

Re: Current build of El Capitan.

2015-10-30 Thread Sadam Ahmed
Hi Sabahattin,

Thanks for your feedback. Looks like I’ll be staying put for the moment.

If I had a secondery Mac or Windows computer I might have risked it but as
things stand Yosemite may be the ticket for now.

The ironic thing is that El Capitan was supposedly going to focus on stability.
I guess this didn’t extend to VoiceOver.

Thanks again.

Yours truley,

Problems finding airplay

2015-10-30 Thread Mary Otten
I earlier send a message about problems finding airplay in the control center.
I just left on my iPad mini, also running iOS 9.1, and there it is. Right after
AirDrop. I sent a friend of mine the same note, and he reports he does not see
airplay in his control center running an iPhone 5s. I am using an iPhone 6s.
Yet I do see your play on my iPad mini also running iOS 9.1. What the heck is
going on?
Mary

Airplane gone from the control center on my iPhone 6s

2015-10-30 Thread Mary Otten
Sorry for all this cross posting, but I really would like to find a solution
for this. I have an iPhone 6 s running iOS 9.1. When I go into control center
and try to find airplay, it is gone. In the flick order, it should come right
after AirDrop. But I have AirDrop followed by flashlight. In my iPad mini
running the same version of iOS, airplane is present where it should be. I have
tried restarting the phone to no avail. Any other suggestions? Can I find
airplay somewhere else? I was trying to use it with the music app.
Mary

Have you tried doing a hard reset on your device? Hold the wake/sleep and home
button for 8 seconds. You can find airplane mode inside of settings as well.

bringing multiple pdf-files together in one pdf document

2015-10-30 Thread William Windels
Hello all,

I red something that you can add multiple pdf-files to one pdf-document with
preview.
However, it should be possible to drag and drop files from the finder in the
active document in preview.
This doesn’t work for me with vo+, and vo+. to drag and drop files.

Anyway, can someone here combine multiple pdf-files in one pdf-file ?

A workaround could be to oc all files together to one file but there is perhaps
something better.

Thx for the advices.

Kind regards,
William

RE: Need suggestions for cases for the iPhone 6S+

2015-10-30 Thread george b
I did not like lifeproof after a while because the ports for the front and back
camers got hasy after a while and had to clean them by taking out of the case.
Otter box is I agree to big and you know the new phones have the really tough
glass

Yeah it’s just a matter of taking time to get to the store. I could go during
the week but to trade in an 80 dollar case it will take me 2 hours which will
lose me 200 per hour worth of work time. I could go on the weekend but It’s
still the thing I need a replacement suggestion. I don’t really like otter box
although was thinking of trying them again, a little bulky for my taste.

If you have a copy of an earlier version of windows you can download and
install windows 10 for free.

Hi,
I need suggestions for a good case for the 6S+. I was using a life proof case
but unknown to me it’s for a 6+ and not a 6S+, one of the snaps failed and now
life proof won’t support or refund because the store sold me an unsupported
configuration.

So I need a new case idea. Prefer waterproof and rugged but open to any
arrangement. Also would like a good belt clip assembly.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Thanks
Scott

Need suggestions for cases for the iPhone 6S+

2015-10-30 Thread Scott Granados
Hi,
I need suggestions for a good case for the 6S+.

Thanks
Scott

Re: Need suggestions for cases for the iPhone 6S+

2015-10-30 Thread Scott Granados
Yeah the phone might be resilient enough. The thing I didn’t like about the
life proof was how they obscured the speakers and microphone and you’d get a
muffled sound unless you used a bluetooth. I usually did use bluetooth so it
wasn’t unbearable but I know what you mean.

Well you have t mobile, and if you have the jump program just do like I did and
I have the case which is fuzzy inside and rubber on the outside and is not
waterproof and the entire front of the phone is exposed, but so what since you
have the no questions asked replacement for the device

I won’t take another of the same type because it will probably fail the same
way.

That more clear?

Well, I don’t hate them, it was the first case I started with on the iPhone 4
believe it or not it’s just they have some bulk to them. I like the streamline
feel and shape of the life proof but you’re right I may go otter box just
because it’s something I know.

Not a bad suggestion and thanks for taking the time to write.

 Hi,
I need suggestions for a good case for the 6S+. I was using a life proof
case but unknown to me it’s for a 6+ and not a 6S+, one of the snaps
failed and now life proof won’t support or refund because the store sold
 me an unsupported configuration.

So I need a new case idea. Prefer waterproof and rugged but open to any
arrangement. Also would like a good belt clip assembly.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

 Thanks
 Scott

Current build of El Capitan.

2015-10-30 Thread Sadam Ahmed

Hi all,

After my initial upgrade to El Capitan and downgrade I am wondering if
some of the bugs in VoiceOver have been addressed?

I spend a lot of time in Safari and was following the thread discussing
VoiceOver issues a couple of weeks ago.

Things work pretty well after downgrading so don't want to risk things
specially as I only have one machine.

Thanks for any insight.

Yours truly,

Sadam Ahmed

As to the VMWare question: oh yes, you can. A bunch of naughty people have a
patch for recent versions of Workstation that’ll turn off the inhibition
against booting OS X on non-Apple hardware, and the same trick will work to run
OS X on your Mac from within Windows (which, as you point out, really ought to

Re: clean my mac on El Capitan

2015-10-30 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Indeed, the cleanup done by the periodic scripts are not particularly
important, although one function they provide is to invoke makewhatis, which
allows use of the whatis command. That I appreciate. Since my iMac is in fact
a fortress that runs 24/7, as all proper well-adjusted Unix boxen should, this
isn’t a problem for me.

I agree that the article is looking a little to one side on matters of app
cleanup, although I still don’t disagree with the conclusion; for most people,
unless a user has recent to believe that an app is storing significant amounts
of app data in a non-user-accessible fashion, it probably doesn’t matter.
Having said this, yes, the places to look are in the Library folder; for
containerised apps just Library/Containers, which includes all Mac App Store
apps. As a rule I simply avoid installing anything I don’t need, and always
perform thorough cleanup (using the find utility, for example) if I make the
mistake of installing an app I don’t want. There are also free tools like
AppCleaner that’ll do this for you.

If Keyboard Help announces the hotspot commands correctly, then it isn’t to do

What keyboard layout are you using? I ask because with French keyboards,
the French Numeric layout, which allows you to use the caps lock to have

is not supported with VoiceOver, although any commands using letters still
work. In that case, hotspots are a nightmare.

An Update on Cereproc and El Capitan

2015-10-30 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi all. I just received word from Graham Leary of Cereproc. This is what he has
written to me.
Hi Shawn,

The Apple Speech API has changed in El Capitan and Voiceover seems to be
sometimes writing the speech out to disk rather than playing out the audio.
Other apps seem to work correctly, but Voiceover is not working correctly.
We're going to keep looking into this.

So basically, bottom line is, because Apple changed the speech API in El
Capitan, Cereproc can no longer be used with Voiceover.

Re: Current build of El Capitan.

2015-10-30 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Remember, nothing prevents you installing a copy of El Capitan on an external
drive or in a separate partition if you’d like to.

Having said this, my recommendation still stands: stay put. There are bugs that
are well-known, which have been reported to Apple (and I know because I’ve done
it) and which have simply not been fixed. That includes activities, hotspots
and Safari text editing. And I’m absolutely not at liberty to say that, alas,
even the latest beta (which you should be running, if you can) is not immune,
although thank goodness it does appear the fixes are coming for some of the
reported issues so somebody is actually listening.

My MacBook Pro, which is my secondary machine on which I do all my
experimenting while I’m home, now has Windows 8.1 on it as its only OS. I am
saving up for the latest upgrades to all my Windows screen readers. The end
days are almost upon us. :)

Re: Current build of El Capitan.

2015-10-30 Thread Scott Granados
I hate to say it but I’ve tried windows 10 recently as well and it’s not as bad
as I was hoping.:) Maybe someone at Microsoft listened although i find this
unlikely. I’m chalking it up to the monkeys on typewriters theory. If you
have enough microsoft engineers pounding on keyboards eventually one of them
will write a decent OS. (or something like that)

As a question about OS X? Is it possible to run OS X in a virtual machine?
Assuming I’m using apple hardware so I’m compliant with the license can I
create an OSX VM say under fusion? Never tried and wonder if you had since we
were talking about alternate boot locations.

Thank you
Scott

RE: Current build of El Capitan.

2015-10-30 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Scott,

I just had to chime in on this one.

I am using Windows 10, with the latest version of Jaws, and am absolutely
loving it.

The only thing is, there is much tweaking that must be done in order to prevent
the covert sharing of information with Microsoft but, once those tweaks are
made, I think it the best version of Windows, yet.

Having said that, I am absolutely loving El Capitan much more than I ever liked
Yosemite.

Of course, as with almost everything in life, it is a matter of opinion.

Mark

Re: VM Fusion 8.1 user experience comments

2015-10-30 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Ditto; started with version 3. Things have only got better. Any comments I
might make about the product are pertinent to the product as a whole and not
its accessibility, although there were bugs in prior releases which meant, for
example, that one could not use snapshots requiring use of the command line.
And the pricing or limited configuration options (compared to Workstation or
VBox) are things I’m largely prepared to deal with, especially since I have
access to Workstation also.

Yeah, it’s nice, really. Just keep your wallet handy. :)

Re: An Update on Cereproc and El Capitan

2015-10-30 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi!

I'd accept that response if Cereproc had actually worked well to begin with and
worsened with the El Capitan upgrade. Issue is that it hasn't. I'd be more
accepting of that response if I was seeing that consistent behavior across
applications using these APIs, but I'm not. Changes are made to these APIs
since Yosemite, sure, but voices incompatible with El Capitan work fine when
being used by VoiceOVer. At least, some do.

Cereproc has never actually worked well at all for me, and I received the same
response years ago when I reported the problems I was having. I suspect it's
just their implementation that doesn't work well with VOiceOver more than
anything else. This can be said for other voices as well, like Cepstral.

Re: clean my mac on El Capitan

2015-10-30 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Assuming the remaining hardware is good, have you done resets on the SMC and
PRAM for your model? Certainly the former is likely to help with fan problems.
You should be able to disconnect all power to the machine, wait a few moments,
then reconnect it.
