Scott, what net gear router would you recommend for the average home user, who
wants good range, and a secure network that has an accessible UI?

2016-11-21 Thread Scott Granados
Everything is going to go to a WiFi standard I suspect. With AD coming out for
high speed in room access and AC becoming pervasive it makes sense to handle
everything natively over WiFi. You can also prioritize each class of data
nicely.

Bluetooth won’t be the spec, it’s to short range. Only 10 meters or so and 15
- 20 meters at most depending on the class of transmitter used. WiFi has you
out to 100+ meters even more in some conditions. I’ve done 30 miles point to
point with 5 GHZ WiFi outside on towers.

Re: VM from Bootcamp on a different machine?

2016-11-21 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Yes, VMWare Fusion does have a migration tool to migrate from a windows
computer. My test lab staff did the migration for me from my HP laptop. I did
have to uninstall some drivers on the VM using a remote terminal session before
control-alt-delete would work. Also, if the your windows software is
manufacturer installed, it is probably against the license agreement to
transfer to a different machine.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Aa, yeah! True! I totally forgot about the line in jack.

Well, the Play 5's have line in, so you wouldn't totally be screwed. I get that
it would be more expensive. I never said it would be the most ideal, I only
said it still could be done.

I could see Airplay going away. I mean, it's not universal. It's generally not
cross platform. Look at what Sonos is doing by simply using standard wifi. Not
only that, but Bluetooth is really becoming more the thing now.

I'm still using an old 4th gen and it still works like a charm.
I never had any other brand last this long. Then there's the question of the

Re: Trying this again. Wanting to install windows in a boot camp partition from a vm. Can this be done without sited help.

2016-11-21 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi matthew, I'm afraid not. If you want to make a virtual machine from the
Bootcamp partition, you have to set up your Bootcamp partition first, including
getting Windows up and running, then you can use Fusion to create a virtual
machine to run that partition in MacOS.
This is completely separate from any virtual machine you have now that was
created from within MacOS.
There's lots of very helpful stuff in the VMWare knowledge-base about this.

can't close preview pane in Mail on new MBP?

2016-11-21 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I'm very excited to say that I just took possession of a 2016 MacBook Pro with
TouchBar. I'm running into an odd problem, though: the preview pane in Mail
won't close to less than 25%. I like to close it completely, so that messages
stay unread if I arrow past them. Is there anything I can try to close it
further? The VO commands work to open it, and to close it to 25%, so I know I'm
affecting it. It just stops moving at 25% for some reason. Thanks.

Have a great day,
Alex Hall

As long as the major backbone routers stay complicated well I’ll be good.

Seriously though, the airport was one of the easiest to set up. I was
hoping for a nice MIMO TRI band option but I guess that’s not to be.

Re: Apple Ceases Development of 'AirPort' Wireless Routers as Engineers Reassigned to Other Products - Mac Rumors

2016-11-21 Thread Scott Granados
Hahaha in all seriousness I’m completely down for very easy to use home models
and for that matter with very good easy to set up security options. I’d much
rather see a more secure home and that made as simple as possible for the end
user. People like my mother who shouldn’t have to depend on the free tech
support from her son to set up her home network.

There’s plenty of room for the double cream filled option up stream in the
provider networks. Sometimes, that simplicity down stream comes with more
complexity up stream. Until google builds a network engineering robot I should
be fine. (Although I’m sure that’s in the works)

2016-11-21 Thread Mary Otten
Well I'm really sorry to see it happen. I was hoping for new Apple routers. I
know they charge more than some others. But setting up one of those on a Mac
was a total piece of cake. I'm all about pieces of cake when it comes to
setting up routers.

Re: Apple Ceases Development of 'AirPort' Wireless Routers as Engineers Reassigned to Other Products - Mac Rumors

2016-11-21 Thread Scott Granados
Well I’m not sure it’s a real big deal. Granted I have, use and like the
airport routers a lot but they aren’t really that full featured. I personally
use a different router and use the airports as access points but I was just
starting to think it was getting long in the tooth and head in another
direction like a new TP Link AD router or Netgear model which have much much
more advanced WiFi features now.

They were good products though.

Re: Trying this again. Wanting to install windows in a boot camp partition from a vm. Can this be done without sited help.

2016-11-21 Thread Scott Granados
Mathew, it’s a matter of file systems. Mac OS is different from fat 32 which
is what your usb disk probably is. You need a fat 32 partition or similar to
run windows on natively. In the case of vmware, the virtualization engine
creates a file that acts like the file system. It’s sort of nested or hosted
on your Mac OS partition but the vmware application plays the middle man here.
Bootcamp has no such deal because it’s running windows natively so it has to be
on a file system that windows supports.

Let me know if that makes sense or if I’ve confused things worse.

Thank you

 Hi.

Scott, I think this is a question for you or for anyone who is
 knowledgeable about these things.

For some reason on my I phone 7 Plus, 4 G is switched off although the
network provider that I use Solely uses 4 G for data and voice calls when
out and about when Wifi is not available. On my 6 Plus S which I have no
longer, I always had 4 G when out and about. But for some reason I seem
to have 3 G and when I go in to mobile data, roaming options, I always
hear 4 G is off. So please could someone explain is there a technical
issue for some reason why I can't get 4 G when not in wifi range please?
The network provider is called 3 and you can get the same network in
America but I think it's called something else as you can get the same
data plan and calling plan as if you were at home.

 Thank you.

 Kawal.

Re: Installing SSD

2016-11-21 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

It will automatically come with one from Apple. The only time you won't have
one is if you're installing a brand new drive yourself. In these cases, you'll
need to install the MacOS first so that the Recovery Partition is present.

Messages in mail not being saved to folders

2016-11-21 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

I'm running the latest build of sierra.

I received a message that I want to save to a folder on my Mac. I did that,
but when I look in that folder, the message isn't there. In fact, it appears
to have been deleted from my Mac altogether. Anyone know why this is
happening? If this is a bug in Sierra, it's a pretty major one.
Thanks,
Donna

Sorry, all, I just found the problem. Somehow that blasted message filter
option got turned on again. I sure wish there were a way to permanently get
rid of that, so far it's been nothing but a nuisance.

Re: The control-G vm fusion question again

2016-11-21 Thread Scott Granados
I noticed this as well. It looks like an interesting product and the
installation is very accessible but it all goes sideways once you run the
application for the first time. To bad bu I like fusion well enough so at
least we have a very good option there and virtual box will be the next thing I
experiment with.

Re: VM from Bootcamp on a different machine?

2016-11-21 Thread Scott Granados
Alex, I’m sure there’s a cleaner way of doing this but let me offer you a
suggestion. Why not build the VM with the assistant first with a new install
of windows then share over your network the contents of the boot camp partition
you wish to keep then copy across what you want to keep in the new VM. You get
the benefit of a clean install with out all the extra drivers and such and you
get a means that’s accessible. There’s probably a more direct way of doing
this, possibly Simon can respond as he seems quite skilled in this area or any
number of other folks here but for me that’s probably how I’d go about it with
out knowing a more built in method.

Just my $.02

Re: Question about playlists in iTunes

2016-11-21 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

• Select the playlist you wish to export.
• Go up to the File menu, down to Library, right and down to Export Playlist.

this will export a .txt file and place it in the location you wish to save it.
I usually put it on the Desktop. You can then get the txt file to the other
individual however you wish, eMail, share, or external media. The other
individual can then import the playlist into their own iTunes Library through
the File menu, Library, Import Playlist menu item.

A few things to note though. This is only a txt file with the playlist info
and meta-data, the songs are not exported. So the other iTunes Library must
have those songs somewhere in their Library as well, otherwise, they will show
up as broken, since the songs are not present in the iTunes Library.

Hope this makes sense.

I imagine you would first convert the Boot Camp to a VM on the mini, and then
transferred to your new Mac and imported into VM there. During the import
VMware will recognize that the virtual machine is from a different Computer and
you will be asked if you wish to move or to copy the VM. I think it is
important that you select "move" in order to preserve your licenses for the
Microsoft Windows OS and any other licensed software. If you select "copy" you
will lose your licensing and will have to pay for new licenses.
My memory is a little fuzzy about that point, but I remember that the whole
"move/copy" question is very important and relates to whether or not licenses
are preserved.

Re: The control-G vm fusion question again

Hi!
Frustratingly the Paralells desktop is still inaccessible.
I have mailed them a few times about this but with no luck.

 Scott,
Ok here is what I think would be worth studying. I was just in my VM and
my frustration level is still a bit high so will not run it again for now.

Seems Command-G was on the menu when I first started using VMware. Its no
longer there yet it seems to still work. I want to play with this a lot
more though and confirm some suspicions. Its supposed to grab the heyboard
 away from the Mac.

This may not work any more as lately I have found just pressing a wrong
key or too long throws things around and I have trouble getting focused on
 the VM again.

So perhaps Command-G really is not used any more. When I run the VM in
full screen I am not interested in switching between Mac and Windows. Yet
I want access to the menu bar. I have disabled the VM toolbar and mini
bar. I think I have conflicts here though by inadvertently pressing Mac
 keystrokes.

 Did this make sense?

VM from Bootcamp on a different machine?

2016-11-21 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I have a Mac Mini on which is a Bootcamp partition. This weekend I'm getting
the new MacBook Pro and getting rid of the Mini. What I'd like to do is use
VMWare on the Mac instead of Bootcamp, as rebooting just to do a quick task in
Windows is annoying. However, I want to keep what I have in Bootcamp, if
possible. Can I somehow use the Bootcamp partition on the Mini to create a
virtual machine on the MacBook drive? If so, how might this be done, and is the
whole process accessible? Thanks.

Question about playlists in iTunes

2016-11-21 Thread David Chittenden
How does one export playlists from iTunes on one computer so the playlists can
be imported to another person's library on a different computer. Both are macs,
and both accounts have permission to use each other's apps and playlists (this
can be done when each account is in a different country).

Kind regards,

Re: Trying this again. Wanting to install windows in a boot camp partition from a vm. Can this be done without sited help.

2016-11-21 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Matthew, you first need to set up Bootcamp, then you can use VMWare Fusion
to make a virtual machine from the Bootcamp partition. I've not done this yet
since at present my VM runs side-by-side with OS X, but I've been reading about
this on the VMWare site recently, and it looks quite similar to setting up any
other VM. My hunch is it's doable without sighted assistance but I don't know
for certain.
The advantage of it is that when you are using Windows apps that are
resource-intensive or where latency in a standard VM might be an issue, you can
boot fully into Windows. For apps that require authorisation, it looks like you
may need to authorise some of them twice, since effectively they're two
different Windows machines.
Would be interesting to know how folks are getting on with this configuration.
