freeing up space in my ICloud account?

2017-02-17 Thread David and his growing pack of dogs. Benny, no longer with us his memory lives on through
I keep getting a message from Apple encouraging me to purchase more
space for my ICloud account. Currently I am using 4.6 of my 5 Gb

account? Such as more then one copy of the same picture?

Re: macOS Encryption Questions

2017-02-17 Thread Terje Strømberg
Same here. Difficulties to log in after backup after starting the encryption
process. Do one restart of the mac first after install or later backups.
Sometimes the filevault freeze and you have to back up again. So, do first a
backup of the clean install. Then you have less trouble if filevault freeze the
first time. If it works to start up the first time afte chosing filevault, it
works very good. You don’t have voice over when in the log in screen. Just wait
and type in the password.

Last time i did restart the mac and turn off voice over after the last «ok»
screen window. I use the Zoom Text magnifier to find the «ok» or «rstart now»
button. It may be a voice over conflict. Only the first time after chosing to
use filevault. After the first restart, it works very good here.

Take care

Re: macOS Encryption Questions

2017-02-17 Thread Scott Granados
Brian, you should run and don’t walk and enable file vault right away.
Encryption its a good thing and it works fantastically under voice over.

The encrypted file system you mention is basically the standard apple file
system with an encrypted extension. It’s part of file vault as I understand
things, happy to be corrected. You trigger the encryption process with the
FileVault program so that’s where you want to begin.

Good luck.

Re: Adding languages to a new MacBook

2017-02-17 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear Michael,

Go to Voiceover utility, speech category and select Voice tab. Then activate
the default voice button and from the menu choose customise. You will find a
table of all the possible voices that Apple can offer us on the mac. Choose
the voices you want from the table and press ok. It will take some time for
them to download, so go and have a cup of coffee. Then restart Voiceover.
Your default voice won't change but now you should be able to switch your
chosen voices on the fly by using the shortcut key combination
control+option+command+down arrow.

Hope this will help

Adding languages to a new MacBook

2017-02-17 Thread Michael Busboom
Hello everyone,
I am very embarrassed to be asking this question, because I have been using a
MacBook for over eight years. My only defence is that the Mac has worked so
well for me that I have not needed to change things, once they were set up
properly.

It became necessary to retire my 2009 MacBook. I have now been using the
latest 13 inch MacBook for three days.

Here’s my problem:

My system is configured to use the US language operating system, but I live in
Austria, so much of my work is done in German. Consequently, I need to
regularly switch between German and English. My new MacBook is speaking
English without any problems. However, I am unable to figure out how to add
German without making it my default language. If I go into the VoiceOver
utility menu by pressing VO-F8, I can’t find any option to let me download
additional languages. Besides not being able to find where to download
additional languages, I am unable to change my default voice in English,
because VO isn’t downloading my preferred voice. The message I have been
getting for the past two days when trying to download a different default voice
for English is: “Waiting for download.”

So in a nutshell, here are my questions:

1. Where can I go to grab German to be used as my secondary language?

2. What can I do to initiate downloading of a default English language voice
that is currently not on my system?

Thanks so much in advance,

Mike

I recently retired my 2009

macOS Encryption Questions

2017-02-17 Thread Brian Hansen
I’m fixing to do a clean install of Sierra on my Mac, and I was wondering
should I erase the disk using MacOS extended with encryption, or should I use
file volt after the MacOS is installed? Also, are there any issues, or
potential issues I need to be aware of when using either of the above methods?
Are these 2 different ways of securing my main drive, or do they work in
conjunction with one another. I’ve tried looking online, but I haven’t found a
lot of detailed information, so any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: raspberry pie projects?

2017-02-17 Thread Erik Burggraaf

Hi Scott,

I'm not command line savvy, but I'm a fair ggood researcher and I can
follow directions. So, I have raspbian on my pi and I ssh in. Recently
the pi foundation prevented ssh server from starting with raspbian for
security reasons, but I think the raspberryvi users either found a way
around that limitation or else started distributing a legacy image which
starts the ssh server and can then be updated live to keep ssh access.

you can find the raspberryvi users at www.raspberryvi.org. They have user
guides image downloads and email lists among other things.

raspberry pie projects?

2017-02-17 Thread Scott Granados
Hi,
I’ve been thinking about trying out some raspberry pie projects including
building a small asterisk phone server on a pie. Has anyone built any projects
and has any suggestions of which kits to buy or a good starting point? Also,
how do you access the I/o on these, do you use a connected serial and set up
over terminal, use a screen of some sort, etc?

Any pointers would be most appreciated.

Thank you

Re: 1Password for Mac

2017-02-17 Thread michael babcock
I use 1 password family, so for me it’s having the ability to quickly share
login information with my wife and the kids. Also the fact it is cross
browser/platform, so when I’m in chrome for OS X or chrome on Win 10 I don’t
have to worry about remember passwords. Also of course it’s nice to have
passwords on anything I pick up that’s connected to the internet… Also one
example is when clients need to share information with me with there passwords…
And I don’t think apple needs all my passwords anyways, they already have
enough of my information. Last feature, generating passwords…

1Password is cross platform, iOS, macOS, Windows and Android I
think. It also offers ability to store other data such as bank and
credit card accounts, and its all accessible from any of the supported
