Re: Question about installing jaws on my Mac

2018-01-06 Thread Jonathan Cohn
If you are installing a version of JAWS that is newer than what your SMA
allows, then it will say so. The Professional and Home versions are identical
except for the agreement to use for non-commercial purposes. Essentially if you
are making money off the computer that JAWS is running on, VFO wants a bit of
that money. There have been issues with JAWS 18 and earlier where if you
adjusted VM settings in any way you needed to re-authorize the computer.
Without the accompanying text in the authorizing dialog it is hard to tell
exactly what went wrong.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Marie,
Command t does not involve the clipboard. You may have run up
against one of those times you pressed the wrong command inadvertently.
The clipboard function is not broken.

Also, make sure that your authorized for 2018 and that you have any keys. If
not then you will have to contact vfo and have them reset your lisence kreys
for it to work. Go to fsactivvate.com and from there you should be able to see
how many activationas are left and reset if need be.

2018-01-06 Thread M. Taylor
BIG, BIG SMILE

Simon, your post really made me laugh out loud. Thank you.

I just spent three days up in Portland Oregon where the temperatures hovered
around 25 degrees, Fahrenheit, and I can tell you that to me, a resident of
California, it felt like the surface of mars!!! I haven't been that cold in
quite a long, long time.

However, I'm happy to report that all of my devices functioned as expected.

Regardless, I'm glad to be back home. (smile)

Ok,
Mark as interrsting and usefull as this article is, I have one major question
about it.

How the hell do they know that the temperature of the city or area of the
country they live in is colder than the surface temperature of Mars?

Last time I checked earthlings had not yet been to mars, Ok people have sent
robots and other tools, But still those devices can not confirm that the
temperatures on Mars are warmer or colder than that here on earth,

And I can't say I've ever met a martion that has come to earth and said they'd
come for a warmer break from the cold as temps on the red planet,

When man kind gets to mars may be then I'll believe the statement.

How to keep your phone (and fingers) from freezing this winter By Luke
Filipowicz, 5 Jan 2018

Although Christmas has come and gone and we are securely into 2018, many of us
still have to deal with a few months of cold, snowy, and windy weather.
Using your phone outdoors can be tricky - and potentially dangerous - if you
live in a city that can get colder than the surface of Mars (like I do).
Personal experience is the best experience Yes, I live in a city where it
occasionally gets colder than the surface of Mars. Winnipeg - "Winterpeg" for
the pun enthusiasts - has some pretty harsh weather during the winter months,
and although we locals like to think it make us extra tough, it can really suck
to use your phone outdoors during the cold months.
Last year, around this time, I was doing some social media work for a local
minor hockey team and they were having an outdoor game as part of a fundraiser.
I can't remember exactly how cold it was, but I can tell you I was wearing
three sweaters, two jackets, three different types of pants, and about 3 pairs
of socks; I was still cold. As the game was starting, I started snapping
pictures with my DSLR, sending them to my iPhone, and posting on the teams'
social media accounts.
Before the first period was even halfway over - less than 10 mins for those
less sports-inclined folks - my fully charged iPhone 5S was at 10% battery life
and I had gotten some mild frostbite on my fingers from using my phone.
It sucked.
The sub-zero temperatures aren't only bad news for your hands and fingers, but
cold is no friend to your device's battery either. In fact, you can do some
real damage to your iPhone's battery if you try charging it while it's cold.
Here's a short and sweet guide to keeping your iPhone and hands warm this
winter.
Protect your battery from the cold
 lt;img
src="https://www.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/xlarge_wm_brw/public
/field/image/2017/11/outdoor-scene-winter-iphone-8-plus.JPG?itok=JWMWhri8"
width="1600" height="1200" alt="" class="image-xlarge_wm_brw aligncenter
image-xlarge"gt; Lithium-ion batteries are commonplace in many devices,
and they're also the same type of battery that your iPhone uses. Without going
down a technical rabbit hole, these batteries rely on a chemical reaction to
produce power and charge; when they get cold, that chemical reaction slows
down, causing your battery to perform poorly.
The easiest way to prevent the cold weather from negatively impacting your
phone's performance is to keep your iPhone as warm as possible. If you plan to
venture out into the cold this winter with your phone, do your best to keep it
warm - especially if you're going out for a significant length of time. Try
putting your phone into an inside coat pocket or under a layer or two to keep
it nice and toasty when your life takes you into the winter wind!
Apple has a few handy tips for maximizing your battery's performance, and
recently, the company explained why older iPhones can experience a slow down in
performance due to cold conditions.
Never charge a cold battery

Re: GPS on iOS

2018-01-06 Thread Mike Arrigo
I'm not sure what it does with traffic circles but what I really like about it
is that as soon as you change direction, your new direction is spoken and the
upcoming street is spoken right away, allowing you to get oriented very
quickly. You can get this information from blindsquare but you usually have to
shake the device to have it spoken. Even if you don't use the turn by turn
directions, nearby explorer is the best at providing what you need to keep
track of where you are in a timely manner. I would rate blindsquare as the
second best app, and the Sendero app at the bottom. The Sendero app just does
not provide enough information while your device is locked.

RE: Question about installing jaws on my Mac

2018-01-06 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Brian,

While this will not resolve your current dilemma, I suggest that you purchase a
dongle for your copy of Jaws. The dongle works in conjunction with your SMA so
you can use it whenever you are on a new computer and don't want to use any of
your SMA license keys.

Subject: Question about installing jaws on my Mac

Hello folks,
I installed windows 10 on my Mac and then installed jaws. After installing
jaws, I activated and everything went great, however after rebooting the
computer, jaws brings up the jaws activation dialog again. It has my jaws
authorization number in there again and it tells me activation was successful,
but it does this everytime. Any thoughts on why the activation is not holding?
Looks like jaws professional is being installed and not the home version. But I
didn’t see a separate installer for that version. A few years ago I went ahead
and switched my SMA to the home one vbut jaws professional is being installed
here. Wonder if that is why the activation window keeps coming up. Any thoughts
would be welcome.

RE: Is it possible to add a new MailBox via the iPhone?

2018-01-06 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Rob,

Yes, generally speaking, you can definitely create a new mailbox using any
client. However, you must be certain that the new mailbox/folder is located
within an iMap folder so that it can be seen from all of your mail clients.
Unless you insure that a mailbox/folder is located within an iMap folder, it
will be created locally on the device, only. This is a holdover policy from the
old POP3 protocol days.

You are correct, the name of the app is Google Trips.

Thank you for your kind words and, of course, happy traveling, (smile).

Hello Mark,

Thanks for the heads up on Google Trip. When I checked in the German store, I
found an app called Google Trips, but I didn’t find one called „Google trip.“
I am almost 100% sure that it is the same app; I’ll let you know. And if it is
a different app, perhaps it will be just as good!

Thanks for letting us know, and all the best for 2018.

Re: GPS on iOS

2018-01-06 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello James,

I’ve just looked for Nearby Explorer in the French Appstore and it isn’t
available here. Looking at the information, it seems only to work fully in
North America and Canada.
I have several GPS apps and usually use BlindSquare which isn’t cheap, but
there are other similar options. One that I think is free and seems to have
become quite good is ViaOpta Nav.
Also, the built-in Maps app is accessible and will give you walking directions.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi Simon,
As I am having trouble sleeping due to the cold, I thought I would
research your question.
The short answer is that the NASA martian rover Curiosity landed on the
surface in 2012 I believe? providing a great deal of information
regarding the weather on Mars.

According to space.com the average is about minus 55 c. I can imagine
Winnipeg Manitoba, where this author is writing from indeed
gets that cold.
there is information on the NASA site too, cannot be sure I am typing
well, freezing hands.

Hope that helps some,

How the hell do they know that the temperature of the city or area of the

Last time I checked earthlings had not yet been to mars,
Ok people have sent robots and other tools,
But still those devices can not confirm that the temperatures on Mars are
warmer or colder than that here on earth,

Personal experience is the best experience Yes, I live in a city where it occasionally
gets colder than the surface of Mars. Winnipeg - "Winterpeg" for the pun
enthusiasts - has some pretty harsh weather during the winter months, and although we
locals like to think it make us extra tough, it can really suck to use your phone
outdoors during the cold months.
Here's a short and sweet guide to keeping your iPhone and hands warm this
winter.

Is your jaws version the right one for the licence you have for jaws?

Jaws 2018 is different to jaws 18.

RE: Your iPhone could save your life if you learn to use its emergency features, USA Today

2018-01-06 Thread Simon Fogarty
Interesting article as well,

I wonder how these features work for those of us out side the USA?

I assume that they would work pretty much the same way.

The one thing I did notice wasn't included in this article was the simple one
of

Hey Siri, call 111 or 911 etc your emergency number,

I had a friend do this while we sat at a café table drinking coffee.

And it works well both on the watch and the phone.

Siri is pretty good when she wants to be.-Original Message-

features, USA Today

How your iPhone could save your life
By Kim Komando, Special for USA TODAY Updated 10 minutes ago

It's hard to imagine leaving the house without a cell phone. Most of us feel
naked and alone without our phones, disconnected from the world. We feel, in a
word, unsafe.
The truth is, your mobile phone can save your life. Driving in remote places,
cornered by an attacker, pinned beneath machinery, we can use our phones to
reach emergency workers in ways that no other distress signal can.
A smartphone can pinpoint exactly where we are located. We can use photos,
video calls, and digital "pins" to illustrate the situation.
That's why it's vital for you to share the very important information contained
in this article with your family members and friends.
Knowing how to use your phone's safety features is as essential as having a
smoke detector in your home. These tools are powerful in an emergency, but
they're useless if you don't know how they work.
Have Android? Click here for the app you need in an emergency.
For iOS gadgets, Apple has provided built-in emergency SOS and medical data
tools that you can utilize to assist you when the unthinkable happens. Here are
iPhone settings that may just save your life.
How emergency SOS works
Emergency SOS is a feature that will call emergency services and notify your
personal emergency contacts when you need it.
In the U.S., your iPhone will dial 911 and connect you to an operator. After
that call concludes, it will then send a text message to your emergency
contacts (unless you choose to cancel). It will send your current location to
your contacts and also update them when your location changes.
Even if you keep your iPhone's location services turned off, the phone will
automatically turn it back on during Emergency SOS.
How to activate Emergency SOS
Previous versions of the iPhone (7 and earlier) let you start SOS mode by
pressing the side button five times and dragging the bright red slider over to
start the call to 911.
While this action still works, there are additional emergency options for the
iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X.
For Apple's latest phones, press and hold the side button along with one of the
volume buttons until you see the Emergency SOS slider appear on the screen.
Now, you have two options. You can manually move the slider to start the call,
or you can continue to hold down the buttons. If you choose this second route,
the iPhone will start a countdown and then automatically call emergency
services.
This is handy if you're in a situation where you can't afford to look down at
your phone or if you need to dial 911 discreetly.
Tap here to learn how to listen to police scanners in any neighborhood.
If your situation is resolved, you can open the status bar and choose "Stop
sharing emergency location" to end the updates to your contacts. Otherwise, it
will keep running for 24 hours.
You can also halt an emergency call if you accidentally pressed the buttons
down. Just hit the Stop button and then choose "Stop Calling."
How to turn off Auto Call
If you're worried about accidentally setting off Emergency SOS, you can always
disable the Auto Call feature that starts a countdown timer and then
automatically dials 911 when you hold the side and volume buttons down. To do
this, open Settings, select Emergency SOS and then toggle the Auto Call slider
to off. Even if it's set to off, you can still use the SOS feature by dragging
the SOS slider on the screen.
Tap here to learn how America's Emergency Alert System works.
Medical ID
Be sure to also use its Medical ID. This is where you store information that
your doctor needs to know, especially in emergencies. If you have any health
ailments or you're allergic to any medications that emergency responders need
to know, you can store it on your Medical ID.
You can list the medications you're currently taking. You can input your
medical history, weight, height, blood type and more.
Do you ever worry about who will notify your family if you're rushed to the
hospital or you're in an accident? On Medical ID, you can put in the names of
your emergency contacts, their phone numbers, and special instructions to call
them right away.

Ok,
Mark as interrsting and usefull as this article is,
I have one major question about it.

How the hell do they know that the temperature of the city or area of the
country they live in is colder than the surface temperature of Mars?

Last time I checked earthlings had not yet been to mars,
Ok people have sent robots and other tools,
But still those devices can not confirm that the temperatures on Mars are
warmer or colder than that here on earth,

Here's a short and sweet guide to keeping your iPhone and hands warm this
winter.
Protect your battery from the cold

or spending too long outside with your iPhone exposed to the elements, make
sure you let it warm up before you charge it. I know it may be tempting to plug
it in right away - especially if it's dead - but charging a cold battery can
really screw it up. Give your iPhone sometime to warm up before you go plugging
it into the wall.
