Thanks for the reply.
The only devices at this time to access Keychain would be Apple devices. I am
not so sure about storing the other things in notes. I will have to think about
this carefully.

Re: Keychain

2018-01-14 Thread Alex Hall
I use Keychain, but I use it to store passwords I come up with. It offers, but
I don't let it generate passwords for me. A few things about Keychain:

* It's not for documents, notes, or anything else. It stores secure
information, like credit card details or passwords, for auto-fill in websites
and apps. To store notes, you'd use the Notes app, optionally
password-protecting them.

* Keychain is only available for Apple products. The moment you want to
auto-fill your password from Keychain on Windows or Android, you're out of
luck. This isn't a problem if you live in Apple World as my family does, but
it's worth keeping in mind and could be a show-stopper for plenty of users.

* It can be a little complex to set up, using a different code to enable on
macOS and doing some other funny things. It's not bad, but it's not a simple
checkbox either.

* Oddly, it will auto-fill at your request. That is, you can use it with no
additional security. On iOS, for instance, you can let it fill in a card or
password, no Touch ID necessary. Of course, your device has to be unlocked, but
it's still worth remembering that anyone can log in or fill in cards if they
have your unlocked device. They can't see passwords, and auto-filled cards that
need a security code still make you enter the code.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Hi,

If the iPhone can be updated to iOS 11, turn the rotor to actions whilst on the
home screen. Use the single-finger vertical flick to edit mode and double-tap.
This performs the same function as the double-tap and hold gesture.

Kind regards,

Re: Quick Question about Using an Apple Keyboard with Bootcamp

2018-01-14 Thread Alex Hall
Your call entirely. Which you choose will have no impact on how/how well the
keyboard works. I use wired, but only because I'm too cheap to by a wireless
one. Plus, I prefer mechanical keyboards, and the one I'm on now was $25 on
sale; a wireless mechanical keyboard is north of $100, last I looked.

Sounds great.

I’m looking into purchasing an external keyboard but I haven’t used Windows in
years. Will a wireless keyboard work well or should I deal with wires?

Command to email link in Safari no longer works?

2018-01-14 Thread Antonio Guimaraes
Hi all,

Command+shift+I in Safari used to open mail with a message containing the
current URL.

This was an easy way to send someone a link to any website I was on.

This command seems not to be working any longer.

I'm using Safari 11.0.2.

Could anyone confirm this?

Thanks,

Antonio

Re: Quick Question about Using an Apple Keyboard with Bootcamp

2018-01-14 Thread Alex Hall
Your NVDA key can be caps lock, which I've come to prefer even on desktop
keyboards. I believe that's in either general or keyboard settings for NVDA.

Applications I'm not as sure of, but I know people often recommend a program
called Sharp Keys. I don't have a link handy, but a search engine should find
it for you. Using this program, you can re-assign keys at will. For instance,
for when I don't have a full keyboard handy and need to run Windows virtually
on my own Mac, I use the accent key as the NVDA modifier. I do this since
VMWare can't get the caps lock key, but as you're using Bootcamp, this won't be
a concern.

All good, thanks for letting me know. I used that command in the

I’m enjoying being able to say, computer, “ go to beginning” or “select

Quick Question about Using an Apple Keyboard with Bootcamp

2018-01-14 Thread Des Delgadillo
Hi all,
I’m sorry if this question’s been asked before if there’s a good tutorial
available I’d love if anyone could point me to it.

I’m taking the plunge and installing Windows this afternoon, but before I do I
have a concern about the Mac’s keyboard working with Windows. I’ve read
somewhere that the applications key isn’t supported on the Apple keyboard. Is
there a way to re-map the apple keyboard for use on Windows so I have an
applications key and a modifier key for NVDA?

2018-01-14 Thread Eric Caron
Hi All,

This is really a lot of fun. I’m focussing on the ways the computer
will follow commands I ask it. I just created a command to start a new email
and it works great.

One glitch I’m noticing. When I do something like say “computer, start Siri.”
it actually starts repeating the last text I dictated using actual dictation in
a word processor or in a email body. Is this happening to any others? Is
there a fix?

example,

I dictate a email and then later on I start Siri and it starts repeating my
last dictated email.

I do wonder what the Safari "Make this speakable" command is actually doing.

Eric,

I was speaking of the automator app that has been discussed on this list a
little. Automator is a application that allows one to drag a set of fairly
standard sequences into an order and have them be performed. It is supposed to
be the common man's answer to AppleScript. So you can easily add grab selection
of photographs and attach to a new e-mail. Automator has had a Save as
dictation command as one of the options for a couple of years now.

I am also appending the URL for how to actually have an AppleScript be used as
a speakable item. This guide says to save them in the Speakable Items area of
your Library and not in the Scripts folder. So, this information supersedes my
last e-mail.

Hi donna,

saying” computer, what time is it.” doesn’t do anything on my computer
and I don’t see that as a command. Did you set that up on your own? Siri
works but is more awkward.

The more I play with this and learn commands the more enjoyable it is. I like
keeping my hands on the computer home keys and this is great for things like
switching between applications or opening and closing applications.

I”m making progress on navigating mail mostly with voice and it is a fun
challenge.
So did you set this time command up yourself? and related question, there is a
“send that command” I was hoping to use that for mail but it doesn’t seem to do
anything. Does that work for you or anyone else?

Thanks,

Re: Dictation and accessability

2018-01-14 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,

Trying some fancy Apple Mail formatting here… So might need to resend without
that.
Find /Library/Scripts/VoiceOver (command-shift-G in Finder is your friend
here).
Find the Get Time of day script.
Copy this to your home library Scripts folder.
Save a copy as a runnable script.
Add a custom open item to dictation and point to the runnable Apple Script.
I am not quite sure about step 4 though I have done it in the past.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Hi Donna,

Sweet! That works perfectly and I don’t even have to do any fancy work.

my computer. When it works it makes tasks flow and is just fun.

Hi Jonathan, I’m just getting started but if you can assign a key stroke like
command s to something it looks like you can assign that in the dictation area
in accessibility in system preferences. that should give you the functionality.

I checked Settings + iTunes & App Store and both Cellular Data and Apps are On.
I have a suspicion it might have to do with Privacy.

Glad to hear you got it working. I personally don't use dictation much I just
have learned to think through my fingers. My code to switch sound devices could
be very cool if it was set up as a speech item. Did you see any of the
instructions to add automator actions to speech?

Mouse movement in audio games not working in VMWare Fusion

2018-01-14 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I've asked this before, but I thought I'd ask again as it's been a while and I
never got it solved.

In VMWare, I have Windows 10 with several audio games. Some can use the mouse,
like my all-time favorite game: Swamp. The problem is that any movement of the
mouse causes my character to whirl around in insanely fast circles, thus making
the game all but unplayable. I've played with the sensitivity in the game's
settings, and I've tried the gaming suggestion in VMWare's settings, but
nothing has worked. I'm using the onboard trackpad, in case that matters. Has
anyone run into this before? Is there anything I can do? Thanks.

Re: VMware Fusion 10.1.1 and BootCamp

2018-01-14 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Yes, that's exactly what I'm thinking.

Right now I'm playing with Ubuntu under Microsoft Windows in my BootCamp
partition. Who'd have ever thought of such a thing even ten years ago?
I'll wait for the release of Fedora under Windows WS, as that's the
distro I'll want to keep being that I'm far more familiar with Fedora
than Ubuntu.

No, didn't get that phone number yet, but I'll post when I do.

Turned out my issue, that I though might be an MS issue, was an Apple
issue after all.

2018-01-14 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Hi, Gena:

I would strongly advise against reinstalling Windows. At least in my
experience, it's far too much of a hit and miss proposition, and mostly
miss. I think it'll be far easier fixing whatever ails, since you know
you have a working install that you can get at over USB in the worst
case instance.

Just my two cents.

I have found that if you wait about ten seconds, the changes show
without having to shut off VO. I have also found that is often
extremely difficult to edit without interacting with the text
exactly where you want to make the edits. Additionally, I have
resorted much of the time to the text edit method, or dictation.
Iwill sometimes make edits on my iPhone by going into the Drafts

18 Brutally Honest Confessions From A Former Apple Store Employee. We see a lot
of nudes.
By Stephen LaConteJanuary 13, 2018, at 1:16 p.m.

1.
Sometimes we honestly have no idea WTF is wrong with your device.

2.
We see a lot of pictures you might not want us to see. We would never snoop
through a person's device, ever. But sometimes people don't realize what
they've left open on their screen when they hand it to us.

3.
We know when you're lying, even if we don't say it. You can tell us you didn't
drop your phone in water, but the liquid indicators inside your phone beg to
differ.

4.
If you're looking for special favors, manners go a long way. Lots of people
think they can scream their way into getting a free thing. It rarely works.

5.
But most of the time, we have to play by the rules no matter what. Even the
nicest folks. Sorry.

6.
Employees aren't there to upsell you on something you don't need. Our job is to
match you to the device that's right for you, even if it's the cheapest model.

7.
And, tbh, we don't actually care if you buy anything. Most employees don't work
on commission, anyway!

8.
We don't actually give a shit when you mess with the display devices. Go wild!

9.
...Because all those screens automatically reset themselves overnight, anyway.
Yeah, there's no way we'd be able to catch all those pranks ourselves.

10.
We know that some people just come in to check their email or Facebook, and we
don't mind! We've got hundreds of devices lying around - go ahead and use them!

11.
Yes, we've heard the "Are you really a GENIUS???" joke a thousand times before.
But we'll keep fake-laughing every time someone makes it.

12.
The store can get really busy - even when it looks totally empty. At any given
moment, there could be dozens of people waiting on a Genius Bar appointment.
They're not necessarily in the store!

13.
We really don't know any of the juicy corporate secrets. We aren't lying when
we say we don't know when the new Macbooks will come out or what the new iPhone
will look like. They don't tell us that stuff.

14.
No, we can't let you use our employee discount. Has any store in the history of
retail allowed this???

15.
Product launch days can be really freaking stressful. Long lines, sold-out
products, loud crowds, impatient customers...it's a lot to handle.

16.
But Apple makes the shifts a little more bearable with a lot of free food for
employees. Free pizza in the break room makes everything better.

17.
There are a LOT of meltdowns at the Genius Bar. We don't like to be the bearer
of bad news, but sometimes that's our job.

18.
But there are a lot of beautiful moments, too. Helping a grandmother learn how
to FaceTime her grandkids, helping a new mom recover deleted pictures of her
baby...that's the stuff that makes the job worthwhile.

RE: mac partition questiohn

2018-01-14 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi tim,

Can I just point out that apple don't or haven't for quite a number of years
used 250 gig drives.

250 gig drives were used back in like 2008 mac book pro and mac book devices
they were the HDD spindal drives.

Ssds are 256 gig from apple now.

I think if we get the serial number from wolfs machine and check it in the
likes of mac tracker it would give us the correct information.

The drive to me says it's a 128gig drive,
Not a 250 like he believes.

Hi,

To clarify. What's likely happened here is that when you attempted to create
the BootCamp partition, something went wrong. Obvious, I know, but it needs to
be said first. So, you now have the Macintosh HD partition using up half the
space of the 250 GB drive and the rest is unallocated space. As Janina
mentioned, distil in Terminal is your best option. Since you have a MacBook
and you're running High Sierra, the drive will be formatted as APFS which makes
the distil command set slightly different than if it was a spinner drive.
"What you'll want to do is first determine a few facts about the drive and it's
allocations, then you should be able to expand the Macintosh HD to use up the
remaining free space and, thus, regain all the space that the 250 GB drive has
to offer.

Actually, the first thing to do is to make sure that you have a backup of your
data incase of problems. There's not likely to be any, but as soon as I say
that, there probably will be. The commands that you need to consider are:

• distil list (this will list all the volumes on your drive and outline their
format/size etc) • distil apfs (this will list the available commands under the
apfs volume set) • distil apfs resizeVolume (is likely the command you'll need
to regain the free space)

Note, arguments like resizeVolume are case sensitive. Also, be sure to do the
backup first as you don't want to lose you stuff. Usually, the system won't
let you destroy things without either warning you or just not allowing you to
perform the action, but you never know. You also may need to perform some of
these actions from the Recovery Partition, but, I believe that you really
should be able to non-destructively resize the Macintosh HD volume without too
much headache from within Terminal.

Later...

RE: mac partition questiohn

2018-01-14 Thread Simon Fogarty
No your miss reading it.

Total size is 124.9 or in binary 128 gig

You have 25 gig used and 99 gig available.

Making a 124.9 gig drive.

Is your drive an ssd or hdd?

If it's an ssd then you wont have a 250 gig drive you'll have a 256 gig drive,

If you had an HDD then 250 gig is more possible
But I think you will find that you only have a 128 gig drive.
124.9 is what it computes to in decimal.

RE: mac partition questiohn

2018-01-14 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi ET,

I think he's missing 128 gig from his drive,

He said the drive was recording 124 give or take a gig,
 Then he had 99gb used,
 With available 27 or so
And 120 something pergible

It sounds very much to me like the drive is only 128 ssd.
