Voiceover freezing in Mojave

2018-09-27 Thread kary johns
Does anyone have a clue as to why voiceover stops working after a few minutes
on my Mac book pro?
It’s only started doing this since I updated to Mojave last night. I have to
toggle voiceover off and on, then close and open the screen before it will
start talking again. Just toggling voiceover isn’t enough. I’m using Alex on
a Mac book pro 15 inch 2018 with touch bar.
Thanks for any thoughts.

Re: Upgrading iMac

2018-09-27 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Shawn,

Apple provides a list of unsupported Macs and the year varies according to the
model. However, for those that did support High Sierra but not Mojave, there’s
a hack available that works.
Cheers,

Anne

How To Set a VoiceOver Activity for The Notification Center In Mac OS Mojave

2018-09-27 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

As the following information works beautifully in Mac OS Mojave, I thought I
would post it, yet again, this year.

The purpose of the steps, below, is so that you can have a different TTS,
from that of your default VoiceOver TTS, read out all of the system
notifications, be they automatic or on-demand.

By on-demand, for example, I have setup the key combo of Control+Shift+N to
open the Notification center on my Mac.

Okay, read and enjoy.

Mark

How To Set a VoiceOver Activity for The Notification Center In Mac OS Mojave

NOTE:
This document assumes that you know how to create and configure VoiceOver
Activities.

Generally speaking, I prefer my default system VoiceOver voice to be Alex.
However, I want any and all of my system notifications to use my beloved
Samantha voice.

The short answer:

To set a VoiceOver Activity for the Mac OSX Notification Center, when
selecting a finder app in the Activity configuration process, simply locate
the Notification Center app and select it. The notification app is located
in the Core Services Folder of the Library folder which is located on the
hard drive's system folder.

The long answer is that when you Click on the Find App option during the
Activity creation process, you will be placed in the Applications folder.
The Notification Center app is located in a different place. You must find
the correct folder and then simply select the Notifications.app file.

A.
First, open the computer's hard drive.
Second, open the System folder.
Third, open the Library folder.
Fourth, open the CoreServices folder.
Fifth, select the Notification.app file.

or

B.
Use the Command + Shift + G, key-combo, and type in
/System/Library/CoreServices/
to get to the correct folder, super fast.

Good Luck and Enjoy.

Mark

RE: Focus Blue 5th on the Mac

2018-09-27 Thread Pete De Vasto
I got my Focus to show up in NVDA, here's how I did it:

If you do have the file from FS, once you extract it there should be a folder
called

FocusBlueDriver1.0.2030

Go into that folder, and run a file called:

FSBrlDriverSetupPackage.exe

This runs a very familiar Windows setup package that installs the needed
Braille driver. Once that's done you should be able to go into NVDA
Preferences, the Braille section. When I did this on my system, the only choice
I had was Automatic. If I clicked on the Change button, a list of displays came
up, and Freedom Scientific was in that list and installed just fine. I am
replying to your message using NVDA, and looking over what I am typing on my
Focus 40 Blue display.

Hope this helps,
Pete

Re: Odd keyboard issue in Vmware after upgrading to Mjavi.

2018-09-27 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
Don’t know what vmware fusion 11 might cost.
The linux distro i am running is Vinux 5.1.
You can use the orca screen reader which on Vinux will come up automatically as
this distro is based on ubuntu but specialized for blind users.

Re: Apple Watch Series 4 review: A bigger, better watchOS experience, Ars Technica

2018-09-27 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
Can you describe it a little bit?
Is it bigger, thicker or smaller?
I am very intrested but don’t have the money right now.
I am getting tired of the android platform and the way nothing seems to work in
regards to watches so i think i give the apple watch a go.
I have the first generation but haven’t used it for 2 years so i guess its dead.

Re: Braille input on my mac.

Hi there.
Yes I am aware of that.
However, my Alva 544 Braille display does not include a built in keyboard.
So I was hoping to find a utility that will allow me to emulate a Braille
keyboard using my standard mac keyboard.

Thanks.

the Focus displays. They give you a link on the Freedom Scientific web site you
need to go to in order to get the driver. I had done that on my older
stand-alone PC, but have not tried that yet with my Fusion system.

Hope maybe this helps,
Pete

Both Anne's and E.T.'s solutions work great, although, as you can tell, it's a

Re: Odd keyboard issue in Vmware after upgrading to Mjavi.

2018-09-27 Thread Maurice Mines

A small question, are you using VMware version 10, or version 11?

I don’t know if version 11 will help your situation, but it’s worth
investigating if it will help? PS, I am looking for a Linux distribution
that will actually run under VMware, I’m taking an extremely
non-scientific survey what distribution are you running? And what kind
of screen reading output are you using? In other words can a totally
blind person do this? Using some kind of software speech, and braille
TTY if possible. Any thoughts?

Sincerely, Maurice Mines.

Re: Odd keyboard issue in Vmware after upgrading to Mjavi.

2018-09-27 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Here’s what happened to me and my keyboard in Windows running in VMWare Fusion
following upgrading to Mojave.
When I started Windows 10 in VMWare fusion, I realised with alarm that I could
no longer use my keyboard. It was unresponsive. I plugged in an external
keyboard and again, the keyboard didn’t seem to work.
Now the reason for it was that in Mojave when you launch an application like
VMware fusion, Mojave needs you to approve this app, i.e. give it permission to
control your mac. You have to go to system preferences, security and privacy
tab. There you will find a table listing applications allowed to control your
computer. You must check the checkbox to enable fusion. This will make it
possible for you to use your keyboard again. Remember, you may have to enable
making changes in this area by typing in your user password. There’s a button
at the right end of the dialogue box which you need to press first and type in
your user password.

Hope this will help. I confess I freaked out when I couldn’t use my keyboard.
It was lucky that I had invoked windows chooser menu in desperation which
revealed an alert window asking me whether I want to grant VMWare fusion
control.

Hi. Bootcamp should already be on your mac in the utilities folder.

Keep in mind that once you set your partition sizes, you can't change
them once windows is installed.

I made a slight mistake on the path to the MakeMKV library. I left off the

It’s nothing that good old tab completion wouldn’t fix though.

Re: Before Installing, any Conflicts Between Pages and mac 10.14?

2018-09-27 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Why would there be conflicts both systems are made by Apple, and there has been
a six month Beta program where a new version of Pages was released a few days
before the release of 10.14. But then unless there is a feature in the new OS
that would help you, I would encourage you to stay with your current setup. It
doesn’t make sense to play around with updating Operating Systems when you need
your system for critical work. At least the new OS does not have a completely
new disk format structure like High Sierra, but I have heard that automation
tools have more difficulty using Apple Events to control other programs.
Apparently if you use any of these tools there a are a lot of confirmation
screens to wade through.

Personally, unless my office requests I verify operation of our next version of
our Applications with the new OS, I probably won’t upgrade until November or
December.

Re: Braille input on my mac.

2018-09-27 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I am not sure your exact need, but the “brf” file format represents all 64
possible braille combinations as regular characters and punctuation. for
example the equals sign in Nemeth braille (dots 46 followed by dots 13 is
represented in BRF as “.k” I have a web site that we were doing testing with
that allows you to use the sdf and jkl characters to input Braille which is
then represented on screen with the Unicode Braille glyphs. I believe somebody
also wrote a regular Macintosh program that looks for multiple keydowns and
waits until all keys are released before interpreting as a Braille input.

Anybody know if Braille Blaster has this functionality? That would be pretty
neat!

Re: iPhone XS Max Tear-Down and Parts Cost Estimate, Business Insider

2018-09-27 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Thanks for bringing that up Jason. I'm not wishing to be a defender, but we do
need to look at the big picture. Whether Mac or iOS, Apple introduced and
continues to maintain this software as a no-cost item. No, I'm not sure how
much it costs on the Balance Sheet, but it has to affect the overall expenses
category for sure. MacOS, iOS, stock apps, numerous other apps, Apple School
Manager and other education services, as well as accessibility features are
continually developed and updated at no visible charge to the end user. Of
course, these are all encompassed in the Apple experience, so they're not
really free, but we don't need to buy most of this separately. One could argue
that why should I pay for things in this manner when I don't use them. My
answer is two fold. First, by spreading this across the cost of all hardware
and other services, each individual actually pays less for the software.
Second, some of us could say that I don't need Pages, or iMovie, or GarageBand,
so why should I pay for them, but there's a huge population that could say why
do I need to have accessibility features. If the cost of accessibility was
just passed on to us as accessibility users, it would be much more expensive to
purchase and likely less of a priority to Apple due to the smaller population
base. In addition, it is really excellent that a six year old device such as
the 5S can still run the latest iOS, so upgrading is not a necessity, mostly a
desire.

All this doesn't mean that I like having to spend over a grand on a phone,
along with the knowledge that their profits are through the roof, but it is a
capitalistic economy that we live in at the moment and there's only so much
that you can go against your shareholder's wishes.

Braille input on my mac.

2018-09-27 Thread Nektarios Mallas
Hi guys.
I am looking for a way to input braille in to my mac. I am looking for a
utility that will allow me to input Braille using my standard keyboard, for
example, for 1 2 3 f d s and 4 5 6 j k l etc.
I would also be interested in purchasing an external usb or blue tooth braille
keyboard.
At this point, I am not looking for any complicated translations and other
features. I need to be able to enter in computer Braille.
Any help is very much appreciated.

Nektarios.

Hi. My bootcamp installs have never effected my mac OS partition. I
don't know who told you about that but I've never experienced any
issues.

The bootcamp and windows ten installs are pretty painless although I
did have to use ira to start the windows installation. after that
though, you can use a USB headset and run narrator to complete the
setup process.

Cameron.

Re: Apple Watch Series 4 review: A bigger, better watchOS experience, Ars Technica

2018-09-27 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hey Lenron,

Yeah, so far I haven't had a ton of time to play with it. Went to get it after
work, and then hubby and I went out to dinner. so, by the time I got home and
got it set up, I only had a little time to play. But I'm impressed with what
I've seen so far. Siri actually works, and the watch doesn't shut off
immediately when I tap to get the time--I know, I'm setting the bar so high,
here.) lol But seriously, the speed is impressive, and it does give you more
information in some situations than my Series 1 did. Definitely pleased with
the upgrade. And the difference in size is barely noticeable. I feel it a bit
in the way it sits on my arm, but I'm sure that within a couple of days I won't
even notice the difference. Looking forward to having more time to play around
with it this weekend.
Cheers,
Donna

I have to believe that that time will come. Sure, there are a bunch of silicon
valley geeks with money to burn, but that isn't the reality for most of us.
And frankly, even if I had that kind of money, I would object to spending a
thousand dollars a year for a phone, that's ridiculous! I used to upgrade
every year. But when you spend $1000 for a phone, you want to at least get a
couple of years out of it. I'm sitting out the phone upgrade this year, and
maybe next year too. I doubt I'm the only iPhone X owner who's doing that. So
sure, they get more money per phone, but it kind of balances out if people who
used to upgrade yearly suddenly start upgrading every other year, or in my
case, maybe every third year. And yeah, I'm super excited about the new watch,
but I'll do the same thing I did with my series 1, use it until I can't any
more.
Cheers,
Donna

At least you are not one of these people Simon defending the hell out
of apple just because you use apple products. I use a couple myself
don't mean I think they are the best at everything including pricing.
In some ways they really rip you off and they know it. I mean the big
shock to me was when those computer prices jumped a year or two ago as
much as they did. With phones apple really don't care as much
especially in places where they know most will go lease the latest
device anyways. When they Realize enough is enough they will cut back.

Hello Everyone,

Because of all of the images and embedded tables, this was a particularly
challenging article to format for this post. Consequently, I had to remove the
specs comparison table and additional reading references. In order to see
these and other external items, use the link located at the end of the article.

Apple Watch Series 4 review: A bigger, better watchOS experience, Ars Technica

Apple Watch Series 4 review: A bigger, better watchOS experience A $399
starting price is a lot to ask, but Apple added a lot to this Watch.
by Valentina Palladino, Sep 26, 2018 5:00am PDT

The fourth iteration of the Apple Watch still looks like a tiny iPhone on your
wrist, but for many, it was the most exciting device announced at Apple's event
earlier this month. A larger screen, faster performance with improved sensors,
fall detection, and ECG readings are just a few of the features that inspired
quick interest in the Apple Watch Series 4. The steps forward in health
monitoring alone point to a new era for Apple's wearable, and users who could
benefit most from them have a compelling reason to shell out $399 or more for
the Series 4.

Otherwise, the Series 4 is an amalgamation of small improvements that make a
big difference in the Apple Watch experience. These improvements will attract
new users to the Watch who have been waiting for a device that's up to their
personal standards, and they will make existing Watch wearers question their
happiness with the smartwatch currently on their wrists. But while the Series 4
represents the first major redesign of the Apple Watch since its birth, that
alone doesn't make it an automatic upgrade for all Apple Watch users.

The hardware
Models and pricing

The Apple Watch Series 4 comes in two sizes—40mm and 44mm—and as either a
GPS-only device or a GPS-and-cellular device. The 40mm, GPS-only Series 4 Watch
with an aluminum case starts at $399, and the GPS-and-cellular Watch of the
same size starts at $499. The 44mm, GPS-only model starts at $429, and adding
cellular ups the starting price to $529. Stainless steel cases are only
available with GPS and cellular capabilities: a 40mm Watch costs
$699 while a 44mm Watch costs $749.

All models come standard with either a sport band or a sport loop band. The
special edition Nike+ Watches have exclusive Nike sport bands, but the bands
don't affect the prices of those models. A few GPS-and-cellular,
stainless-steel Watches come with the premium Milanese loop bands, and they
cost $799 and $849 for the 40mm and 44mm sizes, respectively.

Those who have bands from old Apple Watches are in luck—all old bands will fit
on the new sizes. Prices for additional bands haven't changed: a sport band
costs $49, while a Milanese loop (as well as special leather bands) costs $149.

The Series 4 comes in an Hermés collaboration edition just like previous Apple
Watches. These luxury devices start at $1,249 for a 44mm stainless steel model
with a single leather band.

Let's talk about that new screen: first, it's the main reason the Series 4
comes in new case sizes. The amount of screen area is larger on this new Watch,
and it will tempt many to eschew their Series 3 and Series 2 Watches entirely.
After wearing a Series 3 for a year, the Series 4's screen is a welcome change
I didn't know I wanted—complications are bigger and easier to tap, photos have
more detail, and graphics are bold and take on new life thanks to the extra
space in which they can live. It's an in-your-face change, even if the
information on the Apple Watch's screen hasn't changed much at all.

The edges of the screen are rounded now instead of sharp, but the bezels are
particularly noticeable when using certain watch faces. The new fire animation
only roars within the confines of the 759-square-mm screen area on my 40mm
Watch, leaving clear strips of black on all four sides.

It's impossible for the naked eye to tell, but the Series 4 display panels use
different technology than those on Series 3 Watches. The new LTPO
(Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) panels combine low-temperature
polysilicon thin-film transistor technology (LTPS-TFT) and Indium Gallium Zinc
Oxide technology (IGZO, or Oxide TFT) into one display. This means the result
is the best of both worlds. Essentially, LTPO tech produces a high-quality OLED
display that consumes less power.

The main way Apple's LTPO displays drain less power is through dynamically
adjusting refresh rates. Depending on the content on the screen, the internal

There are a number of things I could say here

And one of them is,
Bunch of money hungry scumbags.

This is a device priced at 2600 nz dollars for me.

Subject: iPhone XS Max Tear-Down and Parts Cost Estimate, Business Insider

The $1249 iPhone XS Max is made out of only $443 worth of parts By Reuters
. Apple's new iPhone XS Max has about $443 worth of parts, according
to a new analysis.
. The device that was torn down was the 256GB model, which retails for
$1249.
. Apple CEO Tim Cook has previously said he's never seen a teardown
estimate that's "even close to accurate."
. Still, it's clear Apple likes to make a healthy margin on its
iPhones.
Apple shaved some parts from the display in its largest new iPhone, helping
keep costs under control in what has become the priciest component of its
phones in recent years, according to a new cost analysis of the device.
TechInsights, an Ottawa, Ontario-based firm which rips open phones to analyze
their contents and estimate the cost of the parts inside, said on Tuesday that
the iPhone Xs Max with 256 gigabytes of storage capacity contains about $443 in
parts and assembly costs, compared with $395.44 for the 64-gigabyte version of
last year's iPhone X.
Apple released a trio of new phones earlier this month, including an update on
last year's iPhone X, called the iPhone Xs, that starts at $999, and the
budget-minded iPhone Xr that starts at $749. But it was the iPhone Xs Max -
with a 6.5-inch display that uses so-called OLED technology for richer colors -
that pushed new pricing boundaries, starting at $1,099.
In its cost analysis released on Tuesday, TechInsights found that the single
priciest part in the iPhone Xs Max - the display - cost $80.50, compared with
$77.27 for last year's iPhone X, which featured a smaller 5.8-inch screen. The
relatively small increase in cost despite the larger screen size was because
Apple appeared to have removed some components related to its so-called 3D
Touch system, which makes apps respond differently depending on how hard users
press the screen.
"All told, what they took out adds up to about $10, so this $80 estimate would
have been about $90," Al Cowsky, who oversees cost analysis at TechInsights,
told Reuters in an interview. "They had a trade-off in cost."
An Apple spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment about the study.
But Bob O'Donnell of TECHnalysis Research said Apple likely made the right
decision to focus on ensuring it could deliver a larger-screened model this
year economically.
"For a certain group of people, the whole thing is about the screen. It's
driving the whole experience and it's what is making people excited about using
the phone," O'Donnell said.
Other costs that increased were the phone's processor and modem chips,
primarily because the chips used newer chip-making techniques from Intel and
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd to boost their performance while
taking up the same space. The 256-gigabyte iPhone Xs Max TechInsights analyzed
sells for $1,249 in the United States.
