Hi Mary,

All this is exactly why I'd like a demo, and that's what I'm getting with the
QBraille. No commitment to purchase yet. :)

Donna

Do others have the same difficulty pairing your Focus with your Mac? That

Thanks Les. It was a lot of fun. One thing to note on the Mac because were
using the new standard Apple is having some issues with bluetooth. USBC
connects fine, but it is something to note incase your hoping to be portable.
Were hoping for a fix in the next update.

The main difference between the Q Braille is that your having to connect twice.
The Mantis you only connect once and you get the bluetooth and Braille Display
its the beauty of the new hid standard.

Hi my name is Joe and I work at APH in quality assurance. To answer your
question no the Orbit writer won’t connect the same way. The reason the Mantis
does and also our Chameleon does is the new hid standard. Thats the standard
Microsoft apple and others worked on. Its still new and I believe currently
were the only one supporting this. I believe the Orbit does on the Mac but not
on the iPhone currently. If I can help in any other way please let me know.

Hi Traci,

Thanks for the link to the YouTube video. It was interesting that the iPhone
was paired with going to Bluetooth settings and not going into VoiceOver and
Braille settings. I know it’s not documented in the manual, but I do wonder if
that would allow the Orbit Writer as a keyboard to connect? The Mantis is a
keyboard, but of course, it’s a Qwerty, so I don’t know if that makes a
difference. I’m awaiting my unit, so when the Writer comes, I’ll certainly try
to connect a second device and report back.

Best Regards,

Les

Re: Focus 40 Braille display

2020-08-05 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Donna,
Good luck with the cube rail. I had one as a demo right after it came out, and
the software was bad. It really didn’t work with voiceover, which was a massive
problem for me. I understand it is much better now. It’s still just seems kind
of clunky, the way you interact with it in terms of changing between the
various modes. But that could’ve just been me. You might love it. I just would
really prefer qwerty input. I rather like the feel of humanware displays, not
the 14, but the older ones. So maybe the mantis will be good. They just came
out with some firmware that fixed some of the bugs. But I’m sure there are
more. It’s a new device.

Hi Mary,

I've already signed up for the Mantis email list. I'm not too optimistic about
it, as I've never been a fan of Humanware, but we'll see.

Happily, it looks like I may be able to arrange a demo of the QBraille. It's on
the expensive end of things, but I would sure like to see any of these units
before I buy, and neither APH nor FS has the option of getting a demo.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Mantis Q40?

2020-08-05 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Donna,
I have not use this display, but if you are interested, there is a mailing list
dedicated to both it and the Chamaeleon, the 20cell variant that has a braille
keyboard rather than a quirky one. You can also see the manual on the APH
mantis dedicated page. If you’re interested in the email list, info on that is
also on the APH page. There is active tech support there. like you, I have
heard very bad things about the orbit reader Forty, and I don’t think it’s even
out yet. But one of the folks who has been a distributor for them said this
thing is not ready for prime time at a recent blindness convention.

Re: Focus 40 Braille display

2020-08-05 Thread 'Kawal Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
Hi Donna.

I never said it was difficult to pair the display on a Mac, I’m just saying
that the commands are very difficult to use i.e. they’re not as simple as iOS.
That is how I see it at the moment.

Not thrilled about the price, but I don't think you can get 40 cells for less.
The Focus is actually $500 more.

This isn't helpful, but doesn’t that display look awesome. *Laughs

$2500 though, wow!

I love the idea of a qwerty keyboard with braille reading.

Re: Latest Nearby Explorer Online

2020-08-05 Thread Jessica Moss
Thanx for sharing this. I loved Mobile Geo back in the day, sense it was very
precise when naming street names, intersections, etc, but I’ve had yet to find
something that even comes close to that.
I’ve loved Blindsquare and the like, but found its accuracy to not be as
good, and would try to point out points of interest to Hannah, when I thought
we were passing them, and it turned out we either already had, or weren’t as
close to them as I was lead to believe, so she had no idea what I was talking
about.

RE: Lazarillo: A Very Excellent Free Accessible GPS Navigation Solution

Hello Paul,

Thank you for such a comprehensive review.

Question: The app on my iPhone 8 Plus says Nearby Explorer. It does not say
Nearby Explorer, Online. Do I need to install another app that specifically
says Nearby Explorer Online?

Subject: Lazarillo: A Very Excellent Free Accessible GPS Navigation Solution

Hello Mark,
I have used Lazarillo on IOS for a while and until recently it was my favourite
GPS App. However I have now switched to the 24 July 2020 version of the free
GPS App Nearby Explorer Online on IOS. This is better than Lazarillo in several
ways:

- It does a much better job on approaching intersections. It tells me the
distance to the next intersection and whether it is on my left or on my right
or ahead. AS I get near the intersection it counts down the remaining distance.

- It does a better job of quickly announcing the street I am on after turning a
corner. Lazarillo deduces the street name from the street address of the
nearest house. My house street address is Kingsway but as I have a corner plot
my garden is alongside Lake Road. If I turn into Lake Road from Kingsway
Lazarillo will tell me I am still on Kingsway as the nearest house has a street
address of Kingsway. It will only tell me I am on Lake Road when I reach the
first house with a street address of Lake Road. Nearby Explorer will almost
immediately announce Lake Road after I have turned into that street.

- Nearby Explorer Online is very customisable about what it automatically
announces.

- Nearby Explorer has a nice feature to help you traverse open spaces. Have a
look at my 5 August post on Nearby Explorer on this forum.

Best regards … Paul Hopewell

Focus 40 Braille display

2020-08-05 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi all,

My VU is having what I suspect is a hardware issue, so in preparation for the
day when it gives up the ghost, I'm again researching braille displays.

Though I'm not enthusiastic about it, it seems like the best second
choice--given that I lack the $$ for an ActiveBraille--is going to be the Focus
40. Two questions:
1. Does it pair easily and work well with Mac and IOS?
2. I remember someone mentioning a crazy limitation of the scratch pad,
something ridiculous like not being able to save files. What are the
limitations of Scratchpad that people have found? I don't do a lot of writing
on the display these days, mostly I write on my phone or my iPad but I would
like the Word processor to be functional for those times when I do need to jot
something down.
TIA,
Donna

Using Outlook on the Mac

2020-08-05 Thread Paul Parravano
Hello all,

I’m beginning to use Outlook and am wondering if there is a key command list or
a getting-started piece that might be helpful? I began with writing an email
and found that when I hit the enter key, I’m not getting a new line, but rather
being moved to another part of Outlook. Hoping to get acquainted with calendar
and contact, called people, as well.

Thanks for any guidance. I did use Outlook in Windows, but that was several
years ago. I’m trying to switch from Apple mail now to see how it goes.

Thanks again,

Paul

Lazarillo: A Very Excellent Free Accessible GPS Navigation Solution

2020-08-05 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello Mark,
I have used Lazarillo on IOS for a while and until recently it was my favourite

Latest Nearby Explorer Online

2020-08-05 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello Kawal,
You can set up the desired options for automatic announcements when you start
Nearby Explorer Online and you can then turn up the sound volume and put the
iPhone in your pocket. As you walk you will hear the desired announcements
without having to touch your iPhone until you have finished your walk and you
want to exit Nearby Explorer Online. For example I have my Nearby Explorer
Online set to automatically announce street names, heading bearing, and
approaching intersections. as I walk with the phone in my pocket I hear
announcements like “Kingsway heading North East” and “Lake Road 40 yards on
left” and “Hiltingbury Road 240 yards ahead”. There are a couple of cases when
you might want to take the iPhone out of your pocket. First if you do not want
to keep hearing your compass bearing you can hold your iPhone upright as if you
were going to take a portrait photograph of what is ahead. The iPhone will
vibrate and tell you your current heading. If you are in a park with open space
you can set a watch point at the park gate. Later on you can hold your iPhone
horizontally and rotate it until it vibrates and tells you how far away the
watch point is. Your iPhone is then pointing at the park gate which will help
you find the gate across an open space. In both these situations you do not
need to touch your iPhone screen and you do not even have to open your iPhone
case!
I hope this helps.
Best regards … Paul Hopewell

Subject: Lazarillo: A Very Excellent Free Accessible GPS Navigation Solution

Hello Everyone,

Last week I was searching for a free GPS navigation solution for my new
Galaxy S10 Plus.

One requirement was that the app must be able to automatically announce
cross streets without having a specific destination designated.

In iOS I use both Seeing Eye GPS XT (my preferred solution) and Nearby
Explorer when I want automatic cross street announcements.

Although Google maps is extremely useful in the latest version of Android,
it does not offer the automatic cross street announcement feature as
described above. As yet, I have never used Google Maps for iOS.

Someone on an Android list suggested that I download Lazarillo for
Android.

It was exactly what I needed and worked marvelously well. I was so
surprised that a free solution existed.

This morning, I learned that Lazarillo can also be downloaded from the
Apple

App Store.

So, I am posting the Lazarillo for iOS information below. As yet, I have
not yet taken the iOS / iPad OS version out for a test spin, so to speak,
so

any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Enjoy,

Mark

Lazarillo - Accessible GPS for blind and low vision

Developer: Rene Espinoza

Free

LazarilloApp the GPS for people who are blind or have low vision, lets you
explore the world around you and set up routes.

Lazarillo is a specialized GPS app that brings mobility tools for people
who

are blind. Using audio messages, Lazarillo will tell you about nearby
places,

the street you are walking on, street intersections in your way and more!
Like a radio, Lazarillo will announce the things around you while you are
moving.

This app was designed and implemented with active feedback from people who
are blind.

The GPS resource is used even if the App is in the background. This allows
the user to keep using the app without active usage of the screen, so they
can

still enjoy the features of Lazarillo even when their phone is in their
pocket or when using other relevant apps.

Note : "Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically
decrease battery life."

This app allows you to use its accessibility functions for free, just
requires mobile data or a Wi-Fi connection.

To collaborate with people who are blind, Lazarillo's main feature is to
become the user's companion, providing essential information that allows
displacement and autonomy.

The goal is to help the person reach the chosen place in a simple way,
receiving Lazarillo indications by voice and notifications of nearby
places,

institutions,

shops, etc, allowing communication between the user and the city.

The app contains the following features:

Exploration: Provides your actual position, nearby places, and street
intersections while you are walking on the street, in a bus or by car.

Category searches: Allows to find nearby places from a specific category
such as banks, health, food, shop, art, entertainment, etc.

Specific searches: Allows to find a route to any place using voice or
keyboard.

Help information:

Lazarillo provides information about establishments that work with blind
or

visually impaired people. The app is linked to a web platform where the
institutions

are able to show important information about events, courses, workshops,
and

any data that a blind person may need. In that way Lazarillo collaborates

with these institutions improving the communication among users, providing
better connectivity between people with visual disabilities.
