Get a Plantronics Savi or Jabra Pro and make sure it can mix the audio both from the Telephone line and the computer via USB. 3. Ask your system admin to hook you to the company's VoIP system if they use it. Then get yourself a nice USB headset and you'll be able to use your computer as a phone and still hear VoiceOver fine. RE: what Voiceover bugs people want or are hoping will be fixed or squashed in Mountain Lion?
I know I'm late coming in on this topic. With using screen reading voice over the past twenty or so years of my life. I find Alex to be the best voice that Apple has offered thus far. To me those other voices are very hard to understand. I have a slight hearing impairment myself. I have always preferred the male voices over the female voices when it comes to screen readers. The female voices are too high pitch for me and too hard to understand for me. They seem very unclear and garbled to me. If a female voice equivalent to Alex was created, where it was clear and not too high pitched, I would like and appreciate that. For now, I use Alex for all my reading and everything I do on my Mac. While I agree 100 percent that Eloquence is the only speech that is efficient enough to actually get things done with, I've never been particularly fond of it. Not sure that makes sense given that I've used Glen more or less exclusively for the past 12 years or so, but on the whole, I think Eloquence is seriously over-rated. True, it's the only thing I use on the PC side, but that's out of necessity, not because I find it pleasant or anything. I don't use the RealSpeak voices on the mac either, though. I even bought the acapella voices, but still find myself only using Alex as a general rule. So, while I can see both sides of the coin on the eloquence thing, it's nothing I'd get all excited about if Apple ever incorporated it. In most cases, Alex is responsive enough for my needs on the mac. I'd love to see a female equivelent of Alex, though. Alice, perhaps? It's just that when it comes to those higher quality voices, I find the female ones slightly easier to understand in most cases. -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Daniel McGee Sent: Tuesday, July 03, 2012 9:39 AM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: what Voiceover bugs people want or are hoping will be fixed or squashed in Mountain Lion? eloquence 100% is for me. RE: Priorities
Hi Mark, Some of the assistive technologies that we have are pretty nice. You are right though that our freedom of being equal with others when it comes to trying to shop for ourselves is taken away because the store layout is always changing or we need the assistance. Like you, I've enjoyed the described movies, but I'd rather have an accessible computer over described movies anyday. For most of my life I have watched movies without description. With me going back to school in the fall, and if I didn't have the computer that I do, and receiving the training that I am very soon starting along with receiving some new technology toys to help me with school, I probably wouldn't be as successful in school as I will be without the accessible computer. -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Mark BurningHawk Baxter Sent: Saturday, April 28, 2012 2:39 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Priorities It's even worse than that. Our talking smart thing tells us we have a $20 bill in our hand, and yet we had to ask for assistance finding HoneyNut chereos? I really like some of the DVS movies I've watched, and I appreciate the skill it takes to do timely narration of visual events. but I also recognize this for the luxury that it is. RE: Apple TV
Hi Jason, Welcome to the list. My name is Sarah. I'm from St. Paul, Minnesota, U.S.A. Wow, you have only been blind for nine years? You are adapting very well. I have been visually impaired since I was born, but had pretty good useable vision until I lost most of it around the age of twelve/thirteen. I still have a little remaining vision left but it isn't very functional. I received a Macbook Pro for my birthday last year. I checked out the I-Phone last year at my local Apple store. I have some dexterity issues with my fingers and didn't find the phone to be real user friendly because of that. The Apple TV sounds awesome with you being able to access the menus and all that independently with no sighted assistance. I am unable to access the menus on my TV, or access the On Demand features that my cable company provides, because of how the menus are set up. Can you tell me more about Apple TV and how it works? Is it a software that you can put on any television/ or flat screen TV that you own? I know I've seen posts about the APple TV on the list here, but didn't think anything of it because I didn't have it. If you could tell me more about it I'd appreciate it. Jason, I admire, respect, and appreciate those who serve our country. My Dad served in the navy for four years during Vietnam. My boyfriend also served in the navy for ten years and was discharged when he got out as an E6 Petty Officer. I always thought if I had vision that I would have followed in my Dad's footsteps and enlisted in the navy. My brother thought of enrolling as a JAG officer after law school but he has some health issues that prevented him from doing so. So I was engrained in my family that it is important to serve your country. Well, I hope you will find the list beneficial. I have learned a lot myself from being on the list here and everyone is very helpful and nice. Have a great day! RE: Apple's AssistiveTouch Helps the Disabled Use a Smartphone - NYTimes.com
Hi: I am one that is blind and also have some dexterity issues with my fingers that made it impossible for me to use an I-Phone. When Siri came out I thought that would solve all my problems. Well, when I went to my local Apple store to try her out for a test run, she couldn't access voice mail for me; check how much battery life I had left; or go into the general menus that one would want to go into. She wanted to search things for me on Google which was cool, and I thought it was awesome that she could tell me what the weather was like, but if she wasn't able to access the things that are pretty essential in havina phone for me; I thought to myself that I wasn't going to spend the money when I am due for an upgrade for a new phone. Now, if voice over, Siril, and this new program can work altogether, and they all work really well together, then I would definitely seriously think about getting an I-Phone. Chegh chew jaj Vam jaj Kak http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/11/10/apples-assistivetouch-helps-the-di sabled-use-a-smartphone/ Apple's AssistiveTouch Helps the Disabled Use a Smartphone Plenty has been written about the new iPhone 4S, with its voice-controlled virtual assistant Siri, and about iOS 5, its software. But in writing a book about both, I stumbled across an amazingly thoughtful feature that I haven't seen a word about: something called AssistiveTouch. http://www.nytimes.com/mem/email.html Description: Image removed by sender. FDDP The Times's technology columnist, David Pogue, keeps you on top of the industry in his free, weekly e-mail newsletter. http://www.nytimes.com/mem/email.html Sign up | http://www.nytimes.com/indexes/2010/12/22/technology/personaltechemail/inde x.html See Sample Now, Apple has always gone to considerable lengths to make the iPhone usable for people with vision and hearing impairments. If you're deaf, you can have the LED flash to get your attention when the phone rings. You can create custom vibration patterns for each person who might call you. You can convert stereo music to mono (handy if you're deaf in one ear). If you're blind, you can literally turn the screen off and operate everything - do your e-mail, surf the Web, adjust settings, run apps - by tapping and letting the phone speak what you're touching. You can also magnify the screen or reverse black for white (for better-contrast reading). In short, iPhone was already pretty good at helping out if you're blind or deaf. But until iOS 5 came along, it was tough rocks if you had motor-control problems. How are you supposed to shake the phone (a shortcut for Undo) if you can't even hold the thing? How are you supposed to pinch-to-zoom a map or a photo if you can't even move your fingers? One new feature, called AssistiveTouch, is Apple's accessibility team at its most creative. When you turn on this feature in Settings-General-Accessibility, a new, white circle appears at the bottom of the screen. It stays there all the time. When you tap it, you get a floating on-screen palette. Its buttons trigger motions and gestures on the iPhone screen without requiring hand or multiple-finger movement. All you have to be able to do is tap with a single finger - even a stylus you're holding in your teeth or fist. For example, you can tap the Home on-screen button instead of pressing the physical Home button. If you tap Device, you get a sub-palette of six functions that would otherwise require you to grasp the phone or push its tiny physical buttons. There's Rotate Screen (tap this instead of turning the phone 90 degrees), Lock Screen (tap instead of pressing the Sleep switch), Volume Up and Volume Down (tap instead of pressing the volume keys), Shake (does the same as shaking the phone to undo typing), and Mute/Unmute (tap instead of flipping the small Mute switch on the side). If you tap Gestures, you get a peculiar palette that depicts a hand holding up two, three, four, or five fingers. When you tap the three-finger icon, for example, you get three blue circles on the screen. They move together. Drag one of them, and the phone thinks you're dragging three fingers on its surface. Using this technique, you can operate apps that require multiple fingers dragging on the screen. To me, the most impressive part is that you can define your own gestures. In Settings-General-Accessibility, you can tap Create New Gesture to draw your own gesture right on the screen, using up to five fingers. For example, suppose you're frustrated in Google Maps
tried out siri at my apple store
Hi List, I looked at Siri on the new I-phone 4 yesterday at my Apple store in Minneapolis. For me who has dexterity and finger issues I thought Siri would be great for me. I have a problem putting enough pressure to perform gestures. Well, when I tried her out I asked if she could check the voice mail for me. She wasn't able to do that. Then I asked her to check how much battery life was left on the phone. She tried to Google that for me. I thought it was awesome when I asked her what the weather was outside and she was able to tell me. I was disappointed that she wasn't able to answer those simple questions or to be able to do the simple commands of checking my voice mail and battery life. I asked the Apple tech person if Siri would be able to navigate through the phone menus and make them work for me. She said no. I told her that Siri is very cool in some respects, but until Siri can operate and find all the simple functions on the phone, that I wouldn't be interested in purchasing it when my phone contract is up and I can upgrade to a new one. The tech person did tell me that Siri is quite new and that probably other people are voicing to Apple the same complaints that I have with her. I told her that my upgrade for a new phone will be in 2012. I said to her hopefully by then Siri will be able to do all those simple and necessary functions that people want her to perform like myself. I thanked her for her time and left. Again, for someone who has dexterity issues with wide, fat fingers, even if voice over was on, I have tried an I-Phone like that, I made a lot of mistakes and wouldn't be able to work the phone very well. SO I was disappointed with SIri. Hopefully, down the road she will improve enough where I'll want to purchase an I-phone with her on it and will love it. I thught I'd report to all of you that use I-Phones and thinking about upgrading to the latest version with SIri. Have a great day! The earphones are Plantronics which is as much information as my husband could see on them. They are Bluetooth, and they come paired with a little disk. Both the disk and the earphones have batteries which last about 20 hours. The annoying thing about them is that you can't tell whether they are being charged unless you can see the lights. I haven't tried pairing them directly with the computer, but you wouldn't need to if you just used the little disk. The little disk is the transmitter for the bluetooth, and it can go in any small earphone jack. I could and have used them with my iPhone, and they would work fine with the computer. They have very good sound. Regards, Gigi On Sep 30, 2011, at 8:16 PM, Sarah May wrote: Hi Gigi, A hundred dollars is a little steep. I agree. The audio captcha's are so garbled that you can hardly understand them. If the people who write the software for them think that doing that is making them accessible they are dead wrong. RE: great wireless headset for computer
Hi Cliff, The wireless head set that you have sounds great. I have a question though that you may not be able to answer for me. I use a notetaker called the Braille Sense Plus. Would this wireless blue tooth head set be able to pair with it along with my Macbook Pro, desktop PC, and my Verizon wireless Sampsun Haven cell phone? Sarah -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of KliphSharrie Sent: Friday, July 29, 2011 3:31 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: great wireless headset for computer So I wanted a blue tooth headset for my Imac, since my plantronics wouldn't pair with it. And I got some recommendations on what headset to pick with a mic. I wanted to take it a step further though, I wanted to be wireless, so I could move around while using skype, and even be on my IMac. So I got the logitech wireless headset with behind the head design. It ran about 99 bucvks retail but I got it off amazon for about 71 bucks. But this thing is flawless! It's literally plug and play. Only thing you need to do is go to system preferences and tell your mac to use it, and your done. I live inn a 1350 square foot town house, and there is no where in the house I couldn't go without losing the connection. The sound quality for me is great, I don't know about the mic yet, I haven't had a chance to set up skype or vantrillow on my computer yet since I did a clean install of lion on tuesday. And the best part for me is, since I don't need the screen, I can work on things from the kitchen table, witch is about 25 feet from my desk, and the keyboard or the headset never loses or breaks up the connection. So if your looking for a wireless headset for the computer, this is the way to go. The only thing that would make it better, is being able to connect to the IPhone. Can't have everything though. RE: Making Blind Adrenaline Games Accessible on the Mac
Hi Brianna, I would love to have games like that accessible on the Mac but for free. I don't have a lot of extra money to throw around. I also love the adventure/fantasy role playing games as well. I wish more of those were accessible as well for the Mac/Pc. Maybe I just haven't known where to look to find more of those and for free? Sarah -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Brianna Snyder Sent: Friday, July 01, 2011 10:49 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Making Blind Adrenaline Games Accessible on the Mac Hello, On my Windows computer, I play poker, yacht zee, and a few card games on a site called Blind Adrenaline. Lately, I have been wishing that these games were accessible on the Mac. Whether the site owner knows how to write apps for Mac, I don't know, but when he was asked why he did not make them for the Mac, he said that the market was too small. I just wondered how many of you on this list would like a site on which you could play games such as euchre, spades, hearts, poker, and a few more games with your Mac. I know that the Mac has only a few games which the visually impaired can play, so it would be great to get this site's games accessible on the Mac platform. For anyone interested, the site is www.blindadrenaline.com If you like what you see there, and the different games, and if you would like to get these games accessible on the Mac, I would ask that you send an email to blindadrenal...@gmail.com This is only because I would like the site owner to realize that the market is not as small as it seems, and that people would be willing to pay, if he were able to write his games for the Mac. RE: introduction
Hi Tony, My name is Sarah. Welcome to the list! I am a new Mac user myself. I was given a Macbook Pro for my birthday almost tow months ago. I am signed up for the Mac classes and have attended one so far. I attend my second one this Friday. So far the first Mac class was a bit slow because the person was trying to fix my e-mail problem with G mail. Also, even though she is familiar with voice over, she is still learning a lot of it herself. So she and I will be learning as we go together. We also had difficulties setting up my Apple account. I guess their page isn't very accessible. She told me though that they were in the process of re-creating it and making it more accessible for voice over in the future. Besides those problems, I am loving my Mac so far. I know I will have some frustrations along the way, but I believe you'll love the Mac. Also everyone on this list is very friendly and helpful. So welcome and I hope you will enjoy switching over to the Mac. I still use my PC right now for e-mail. I'm hoping this Friday, when I attend my second Mac class that the genius people will be able to fix it so I can switch over to the Mac for e-mail. Sarah From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Tony Hernandez Sent: Sunday, April 17, 2011 3:41 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: introduction Hi all. I'm Tony Hernandez, and I just joined today. I see from the archives that this group has been around for quite some time. I just ordered a not so new MacBook and haven't even received it yet, but I hope to hit the ground running with Voice Over. I can already see this group is full of kind people. I hope to be able to help others soon as well. Now, of course, I do have a question. Proofreading is part of my job, and although I do have a, dare I say it, Windows PC to do it with, I might switch everything to the Mac at some point in the future. I am able to use the windows screen reader to tell when something is either in all caps or in proper case. Can this be done with Voice Over? I'll probably find out the answer to this in due course as I play with the Voice Over Utility, etc., but I've been itching to know this for a long time. I might need to know about it if Objective C has any case-sensitive keywords or variable syntax, etc. Of course if it doesn't give that feedback, it's far from a deal breaker. I have no need to use my Mac for my regular job. I'm very excited to get a Mac. I've been salivating over them since Mike Arrigo demonstrated voice Over. I already have an iPod Touch. the most challenging thing so far for me regarding Apple is resisting the temptation to be the ever-criticized fan boy. Lol. Hard not to be loyal to a mainstream company that would make its own screen reader, do a wonderful job on it, and include it with its $30 operating system at no extra charge. Tony Hernandez http://dutyofman.net/ Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14) _ No virus found in this message. RE: will be starting my first mac class
Hi Chris, Hopefully the person I will be working with tomorrow won't feel reluctant working with me. Hopefully I'll be able to impress them with the bit of voice over that I know that they will be willing to work with me. I have had to be a trail blazer and pave the way for other blind people by being the first before. It's never easy, but I think it helps the people that come after us. Hi Carolyn, I hope my experience with the one-to-one training will be positive like yours. I like it if the person I work with and myself will be able to exchange ideas Like what happened with yours. It seems like Apple really wants to , or is trying to, make their products ver accessible to the blind and visually impaired community. I think it's awesome that they have all the instructors or reps be familiar with voice over and hopefully they are familiar with other software that helps the deaf hard of hearing community and those with other disabilities. I will definitely tell you and the list how my first session went. RE: will be starting my first mac class
Hi Chris, I'm located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I am very surprised and excited about how willing the people at my Apple store are willing to work with me and how friendly and accommodating they seem to be. This past December I went into the Apple store near my home and looked at voice over on the Macbook. The sales person I worked with, who worked with me for two hours and I made an appointment to come in, was so helpful and friendly. I learned a lot in those two hours. If it wasn't for the cost I would have purchased a Macbook right there and then. Luckily, my family purchased one for me a little over a month ago for my birthday. I hope my first session will go well tomorrow and I'll tell everyone how it went. RE: will be starting my first mac class
Hi Zack, It should be interesting and fun. I had some formal training from assistive technology people from my State Services for the Blind when I started using jaws years ago. I didn't like their style of teaching because a lot of them would talk or teach so technical. I did a lot better once I had someone who wasn't formally trained in assistive technology, or IT, and used the software on a daily basis. They were blind themselves and so were able to show and explain how to use the software to me on a lay person's level. You know what I mean? So it will be interesting to see what this trainer's style of teaching is like. RE: will be starting my first mac class
Hi Cheree, I will tell you how my first session goes after tomorrow. I'm very lucky that my family paid for a year's worth of this training. If it wasn't for that I would be learning as I go and from what I would have read from the list as well. I don't know how expensive the training is, because I didn't have to pay for it. If it's kind of expensive I can see why we'd have to learn as we go and from others. Yes, so far the reps that I have dealt with through Apple have been so nice and friendly. It's a breath of fresh air because other tech support people I have dealt with in the past from other companies, they will remain nameless, haven't been so. Thanks for the good luck and I hope to learn a lot tomorrow. looking for an external hard drive compatable for both mac and pc
Hi List, I download a lot of books, movies, and music. I want to keep them all in one place besides my hard drive on the Mac or PC. I have been using compact flash cards and junk drives, known as memory sticks, but they don't provide enough space where I can fit everything all at once. I don't want to have to keep purchasing expensive compact flash cards or memory sticks. A family member of mine suggested that I should purchase an external hard drive. I told her that was a great idea! Now if I do this, which one should I purchase that will be compatable with both the Mac, PC, and my Braille Sense Plus? I spend three days a week at dialysis where I bring my Braille Sense Plus. I read books and watch movies and TV shows while dialyizing. Hopefully, once I am more comfortable with the Macbook, I'll bring that as well. I want an external hard drive that will be compatable with all these devices, have a lot of memory as well, but not cost me a fortune either. If anyone has any great advice on this matter, I would grately appreciate it. Thanks, Sarah -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Hi Sarah, I chuckled loudly when I read the first line of your message. Yes, I did make out really well for my birthday. *grin* My friend was envious and jealous of me because my Mac is newer than his. Oh well. He can get over it and has. So when my parents gave me the Macbook for my birthday, along with a year's worth of training over the phone and at the Apple store through Apple cares; I was utterly amazed and taken aback. My friend, who introduced me to the Mac, was in town for my birthday. My Mom said your Dad and I thought it would be a perfect time to give it to you because Mark can help you get acquainted with it while he's here. I do love my Macbook and the voice over voices are so much better than Jaws voice selections by far! I am having some frustrations with the Mac, but I knew that would be par for the course, because I am learning a new type of computer and software. I alos am unable to receive my e-mail through my Macbook yet. For some reason when I try to set up my G mail account, either I do something wrong, or it just doesn't want to accept the settings. I also received an I-Pod shuffle from my brother along with a twenty-five dollar I-tunes gift card from my niece and nephew. So I will be all set with Apple products. I don't have an I-phone though. I looked at one when I needed to purchase a new phone. It wouldn't work for me. I have very short, wide, and stubby fingers. When I tried to use the touch screen pad the commands wouldn't work for me. So I'm sticking with Verizon. I have their Haven phone which I love. I'm hoping that all you experienced Mac users with voice over will be able to answer all the questions that is newbie will have for you when I get stuck in a jam. *smile* I know that I'll love switching over to the Mac even though I'll get frustrated from time-to-time. RE: introduction
Hi Charlie, Thanks for the warm welcome. I am very lucky to have a family that is able to afford buying me a Mac right now. I am a very lucky person indeed! I understand what it is like to go from being able to read the screen to using just a screen reader. It was many, many, years ago, but before the RP took most of my vision when I was twelve, I used magnification software as well. Back then I had an Apple II E and was using Magic Slate. How have the times changed from then. LOL Still, I remember how it was such an adjustment for me to go from trying to read what was on the screen to using what I thought was the horrible mechanical voice reading what was on the screen to me. At first I used an Apple screen reading program called BEX. Then I learned how to use The early versions of Jaws with dos programs for Word Perfect. After that the rest is history. I never really got a choice if I wanted to learn Jaws or another company's screen reading program for Windows PC computers. I was stuck with Jaws and that's all I had to go by. Anyhow, I know it may take you some time to get use to using just the screen reading program, and only listening to what's on the screen instead of looking at it, but your eyes will so appreciate you not abusing them. I no longer have the ability to read any size print. I haven't since I was fourteen years old. So I had to make the transition to learning how to use the screen reading software and Braille for my ways to read pretty fast. Yes, everyone on the list seems so friendly and helpful. If I have any questions I will ask. I'm not afraid to ask questions. It also helps me that I have a friend who has a Macbook who uses voice over. He said if I needed his help to call him any time. Well again, thanks for the welcome Charlie. When you get more familiar with your Mac, you'll be able to configure VoiceOver commands on your BrailleSense to operate your Mac should you wish to. Now for a couple of useful tips. Control-Option-K turns on Keyboard Help where you can press any key and hear what it is, or press any VoiceOver command and hear what it does. You leave Keyboard Help by pressing the Escape key at the top left corner of your keyboard. Control-Option-H-H (hold down Control- and Option and press the letter H twice) gives you all the VoiceOver commands sorted into menus. Press Return to select a command, or Escape to leave the menus. Hi Ray, I think BEX was the Braille Edit or Express program you are talking about. I hated the speech for the Apple II Es. They sounded so harsh and mechaniacal. For someone who was just starting to use a screen reader at the time, it was hard for me to adjust because I hated the sound quality of the speech. No we have these wonderful programs like voice over and the sappy speech voices to choose from with Jaws. The screen reading and speech technology has sure evolved for the better since the 1980s. I do miss though playing Wagons's West. That was a computer game for the Magic Slate program for the Apple II E. You were like the travelers going west on a wagon train. It was a lot of fun! I have fond memories of the Apple II E and the Echo II speech synthesizer. Back in those days, just about all we had were the 5.25 floppy drives and a program called Work Station. That was a group of five small programs encoding a word processor which could deal with a grand total of five pages. Yep, just five pages. Wow! Of course, then came Word Talk TM. That was on two 5.25 floppies. Then, Braille Edit Express. Remember those? Kind of wish they still made Braille Edit Express for the Mac. Now that was one very utilitarian program if I say so myself. Welcome to the world of mac - you will never look back! It really is a more user friendly platform. I am learning voiceover too. I have low vision and have previously just used the zooming feature within OSX but now feel like i want to use voiceover full time to avoid straining my eyes and harming my body with bad posture. It's quite difficult for me as even when i was on windows I was just using magnification software (zoomtext) so i don't have a screenreader background. The people on this list are really great. Hi. I know that the Mac isn't windows and that Voice over isn't Jaws. I will treat them as their own individuals. Thanks for the advice though. I look forward to the classes and the over the phone training. Thanks for the warm welcome Sarah along with others from the list. Thanks for the warm welcome! It seems like everyone here is very friendly and helpful to one another. I wish you luck on purchasing your new I-Mac in the near future. I still use my PC with Jaws for e-mail. I'm hoping in the near future to remedy the e-mail problem with my Macbook. Once that problem is solved; I'll be on it all the time.
