Lol, insert face palm. I can’t believe I wrote alt instead of command. :)

I did have an issue of stopping the timer.. Done was dimmed. Any ideas why?

Duolingo on Mac

2023-12-21 Thread Traci Duncan
I don’t know if anyone here does Duolingo via Safari on Mac. I learned today
that you can reorder words with the mouse. You know those lessons where you
need to form the sentence buy selecting the words. Well, it is annoying when
you realize you made a mistake a few words back. It works to move your mouse to
the word, mouse down on it, then go to where you meant to place that word. Set
mouse focus over that space, then mouse up.

I’ll have to see if I can move mistaken words like this on iOs. My guess is not.

Hope you find this useful,
Traci

Hi all, I’ve pulled out an old portable drive that has Time Machine back ups

Oh, how I wish I could search it like a regular folder system.

Any guidance is appreciated.

Music app radio?

2023-11-08 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi, is it still possible to listen to radio internet streams via the music app?
I’m trying to search for a particular station.

Thanks,

Siri Nicky

2023-09-21 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all, remember when I was asking about voices for RS games? Well, I’m trying
out Siri Nicky. I quite like her except I cannot speed her up. Not via Mac
settings or RS game settings. The voice does not respond to the rate slider.

Any idea why?

Thanks,
Traci

MacoS RS games voice

2023-09-20 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all, could you share which voice you use when you play the rs games? I’ve
been using Alex on there for a long time, but occasionally I have a hard time
understanding words in the chat.

For now, I’m trying out Eloquence Read. Gosh, he sounds terrible! It is so
weird that he is all I use to listen to. I’m hoping he’ll sound more precise
though during the chat.

All suggestions welcome. :)

Not upgrading Macbook Air

2023-09-18 Thread Traci Duncan
Well, color me pleasantly surprised. I contacted Apple Accessibility about
upgrading my Mac and the not responding messages I am receiving. They don’t
recommend I upgrade my Mac for this issue. They say it is a software issue and
will hopefully be addressed.

I’m pleased and surprised at this response. I would be super disappointed to
spend this amount of money on a new machine that I don’t really need. I just
want the messages to stop. :-)

Onto researching ad blockers and the like. I believe someone on this list said
that that might help in safari.

Thank you for all your advice and suggestions. I appreciate it.

Ok guys, then you are probably recommending…

Apple M2 chip with 8‑core CPU, 10‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine, and the 16GB

Sheesh, this is $1599! Thank goodness, I have my current model to trade in.
They will give me $440 for it.

This really better stop the not responding messages. Lol!

8 gigs or 16? Memory.

2023-09-16 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all, I was just doing a little more reading on MacBook Air M2, and a buying
guide suggests upgrading to a 16 gig memory isn’t necessary for the average
user. What are your thoughts on this?

My MacBook Air from 2011 lasted me ten years, before I considered buying new.
This 2020 model I am using, I’m disappointed to feel the need to purchase new
now.

So, in short, this m2 model I’m considering, I want it to last me a good while.
:)

Thanks for your input.

Remember? Mac mini portable?

2023-09-13 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi guys, remember when I wondered if the Mac mini could be used like a laptop?
*Grins, I’m not the only one. There are links and youTube videos on using the
Mac mini on the road with power banks.

I probably wouldn’t go this route, but nifty all the same. I’ve always been
drawn to the small Mac mini, but alas a laptop is a better fit for me. I need
that cordless concept.

Concerned about the future Mac accessibility

2023-09-07 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all, it seems like we are having more than a few messages on this list about
the disappointment in Mac’s VoiceOver performance.

Are quite a few of you thinking of switching back to windows? Or are a lot of
you overall still happy with the VoiceOver experience?

I think I am mostly curious about this, because I have been talking about
updating my MacBook Eyre. I guess part of me is beginning to wonder, should I
get a Windows laptop instead? I would be very disappointed to spend $900 on a
MacBook Air, and still have a lot of performance issues.

What are your guises thoughts?

Thank you,

gMail filters rules

Is it better to create rules and filters on gMail’s site, or create them in the
Mac Mail app. My original MacVisionaries and ViPhone filters, I created on
gMail’s site.

Recommendations new MacBook Air m2

2023-08-27 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all, I’m considering getting a new Mac in the back to school sale. Could you
please advise me on specs?

I am probably a light user. It is the VoiceOver not responding message that is
driving me crazy! Lol! Even simple Safari searches get the not responding. I
get it in music as well.

So, some Mac uses I do: surfing (ie searches), music app, rs games app, mail,
pdfs. That sort of thing.

Thank you for your feedback. I don’t want to buy something less than my needs,
neither do I want to buy something far more robust than I need. Looking for
Goldilox here. *Grins

Scanning & ocr options?

2023-08-05 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all, I don’t know much about full scanning OCR options. I was just reading a
bit about pearl and open book from Jaws. Does the Mac have solutions like that?

One main thing I want is the ability to know if my reading material is right
side up. I also like the idea of the layout of the page remaining intact.
Tables, columns, etc.

Thanks for educating me. :)

Re: Just a Quick Hello To Everyone on the List from Moderator Mark

2023-05-31 Thread Traci Duncan
Hello, 2 little things I’ve thought would be useful:

A VoiceOver gesture, (say a 2-finger swipe right) in the messages window to
send the composed message. Instead of locating the send button.

A VoiceOver gesture to spell the current word in focus. Often I’m on the web
and want something spelled out. It takes many little steps to turn the rotor to
word, flick to the one I want, then turn the rotor to character, flick letter
by letter. A simple shortcut would be super useful.

Those are two little things off the top of my head. :)

Take care,
Traci

I think so, because it goes off browsers. They mention Microsoft Edge, Google

I don’t know if it is accessible and I couldn’t get through the contact us

Re: Navigating app store

2023-05-01 Thread Traci Duncan
Hello, thank you for your reply.

I just tried what you suggested, and it didn’t work for me. :) However…

What worked twice in a row was moving the mouse focus to the app and left
clicking on it. So if Voiceover is on the app pages, I VO-command-f5 to move
the mouse over, then VO-shift-space to mouse click. To let you all know, I was
doing this with a search result of apps.

Hth,
Traci

Favorite mailboxes help

2023-03-30 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all, I am trying to fix my favorite mailboxes. I want for Command 1-3 to be
inbox, Macvisionaries, ViPhone. Somehow Command 2 and Command 4 are blocked.
They each have a dimmed version of MacVisionaries and ViPhone. I tried the
option of removing them, but that removes the nearest favorite mailbox. I also
tried the rebuild option, but that didn’t seem to do anything.

Any suggestions on how I can fix this.?

Thank you,
Traci

Safari debug and videos

2023-03-22 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all, in my continued quest to stop videos from playing and Voiceover
counting down this ad will stop in so many seconds, I came across this idea.
What do you think?

>From Mac World.
Safari has a debug menu that can be used to stop autoplaying video, but first
we need to activate the debug menu using Terminal.

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeInternalDebugMenu 1

Close Terminal, and reopen Safari. You’ll see a new option at the righthand end
of the top menu bar: Debug. Click this, then select Media Flags > Disallow
Inline Video.

That’s it! (If you want to get rid of that Debug menu option, go back to
Terminal and enter

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeInternalDebugMenu 0

Hi all, please help me fix the speech rate on RS games. It is painfully slow. I

I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but that changed nothing.

Hope someone knows how to fix this.

Safari Extensions and passwords

2023-03-08 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all, I’ve been looking at Safari extensions this morning and notice that
most of them say they can read passwords and credit card information. This
doesn’t sound safe to me. I wanted to install an ad blocker and rss reader
extension.

What is your advice on these privacy settings?

Thanks,
Traci

Navigating app store

Hi all, How do I get into the app’s description? It seems like my only option
is to get it or purchase it. I’ve tried interacting deeper and deeper, but this
doesn’t open up the description, reviews, etc.

Thanks,

Re: Alaska Airlines on Safari

2023-02-24 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi, I can read the buttons for the days and prices. Once I click on one, the
results appear to be in a table. There should be several flight options
throughout that day.

It works better on my iPad mini via the Alaska app. I’d like to do my searching
on my Mac. :)

Thanks,
Traci

Revisiting Safari not responding

2023-02-08 Thread Traci Duncan
I am frustrated with Safari not responding. It happens on a daily basis. I am
doing nothing intensive. Simple Google searches, webpage reading. Please, is
there settings I can change to improve things?

My MacBook Air is less than 3 years old. Processor 1.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core
i7. Memory 16 GB 3733 MHz LPDDR4X. Shouldn't this be enough power for simple
web use?

Thank you, I appreciate the help.

Duplicate Music playlist

2023-02-01 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all, there is this annoyance in music where several playlists are being
duplicated. Say I have dinner jazz, then music creates dinner jazz1. There
doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason. It’s happened to half a dozen or more.

Any ideas why this is happening or how I can prevent it. I really dislike the
Mac OS music app.

Thanks,

Updated Apple ID

2023-01-18 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all, a few weeks back I changed my Apple ID password, and since then I often
get messages popping up on each device. Repeatedly asking me to update Apple ID
settings, some services may not be available. Or messages saying a new device
has been added to my account and now has access to iMessage, if you do not
recognize this device, etc.

Any idea why this keeps happening, or how I can stop it? I get why it would
initially ask me, but it continuously is asking.

Thank you,

Re: I need an accessible thermostat

2022-10-12 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi, I actually just went through this process. I chose the Emerson Sensi ST55.
It is a smart thermostat that will connect to Alexa and home kit. I decided on
this model because of the favorable reviews and it has physical buttons. I’m
hoping it is the best of both worlds.

Yes, you can control it via the iOS app. Some buttons are labled weirdly, but
useable. I have found the scheduling to be a little challenging, but I think
I’ll be able to do it. Honestly though, I like the simplicity of changing my
temp on the fly. Here is a link that describes the commands you can use with
Amazon Alexa for the thermostat.
https://sensi.emerson.com/en-us/support/what-commands-can-i-give-my-sensi-thermostat-using-amazon-alexa

Hope this helps some.

Text Edit on after Mac sleeps

2022-10-12 Thread Traci Duncan
Hey all, I am finding when I use TextEdit and I step away for a minute, my Mac
may go to the LockScreen. When I come back and unlock it, VoiceOver will not
read inside the text and a document. I need to turn VoiceOver off and on again.
Does anyone know why this is happening? Anything I can do about it?

Thank you,
Tracy

Improving music app experience

2022-02-03 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all,

Does anyone have tips on making the music app experience better on the Mac?
Frankly, I hate it! I find it a challenge to navigate. It often says not
responding. Frequently voiceover seems to jump out of whatever focus I might be
in.

I appreciate any advice. I will even consider a different app to manage my
music.

Thank you,

Re: Voiceover and languages

2021-08-24 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi, it won’t switch to other languages. The voices are listed there, but I’m
unable to select an alternative language.

I noticed at the top of the list it says automatically choose based on default
language. Is there a way to change this? So I can switch languages on the fly.

Thanks,

Notifications highjacking voiceover

2021-08-13 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all,

Something that I cannot get used to with the new operating system is how
notifications seem to steal voice overs focus. I never know quite how to get
out of it! I usually have to hit Escape a couple times, or leave Safari and go
to the desktop. It's super annoying! Most of the time I find myself leaving my
Mac on do not disturb, so the notifications don't bother me.

Does anyone have any practical tips. :-) seems silly to always have my Mac on
do not disturb.

Thank you,
Traci

I may look into this, but you are right, $500 would not be worth it.

Bad News Bears MacBook Air 2011

2021-05-26 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi Al,

Has anyone tried to service an old MacBook? Is this something the Apple Store
will still do?

My assumption here as I'm going to need the battery replaced. I opened up my
old MacBook Air, and the trackpad is lifted upward. The battery is also
nonresponsive. It remains at 0%, power connected, not charging.

What are your thoughts? Is it worth it? I have no idea how much it might cost.

Thank you,
Traci

Control to stop voice over talking

2021-05-21 Thread Traci Duncan
Hello, didn't it used to be when you hit the control key voiceover would stop
talking completely? Now it seems like it's just a pause button. Are there
alternative options?

Thank you,

Re: iPhone as a remote control for my apple TV gen 4?

2021-05-14 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi, I’ve just had to do this, b because we can’t find our remote. Lol!

I don't remember if you need to download the app first, but I found the Apple
TV remote in my control center. Once you have the app open and you're connected
to your Apple TV, you'll find the usual buttons towards the bottom of your
screen. Siri, menu, home, etc. If you want to you Siri, double tap and hold on
that button and speak, then release it. This is how I turned on voiceover on
the Apple TV, because it was not on. You'll find the directional pad towards
the upper middle of your screen. Left, up, right, down, select, etc. That is
how your move around the options on your Apple TV. I've kind of found the
process cumbersome, but it works.

HTH,
Traci
PS. I wonder if there's a third-party remote I could purchase. Honestly, I'm
not super fond of the remote that comes with the Apple TV.

Re: Feedback update Mantis Q40

2021-03-03 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all,

So something I’m still not clear on when comparing older braille displays and
new ones, is the multiple connections. My 4th gen Focus 14 connects to one
device at a time, however it does automatically connect. So, if I am on my
iPhone using it, lock that phone and move over to my iPad, the Focus works with
that device.

Is that the difference? The new displays connect to multiple devices, but I
need to reestablish the connection?

Back to the Mantis specifically, could I use the keyboard on my lap?

As far as I understand, I’d purchase Mantis directly through APH right? I’m not
super familiar with them as far as a store goes. Last year I bought some slate
& stylus supplies. :) That’s the extent of my consumer experience.

Thanks,
Traci

Feedback update Mantis Q40

2021-03-02 Thread Traci Duncan
It has been a while since this device has come out. I wondered if those of you
that are using it could update the groups with your experience.

Connectivity, ease of use, switching between phone, tablet, computer, etc.

I’m very interested in the Mantis Q40, but admittedly nervous about such a
large purchase. I own a Focus 14 Blue and purchased that in 2013.

Thank you for any user experience you share.

Re: Can you read this playlist table?

2021-02-19 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi, thank you for the grouping suggestion. I was able to get inside the
playlist and read track, composer, etc, however I only could move up or down.
It is very odd navigation.

And yes, I actually tried this on a Windows machine with Narator and Edge. It
couldn’t read it either.

Thank you,
Traci

Re: Music app PlayList question on Mac

2021-02-19 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi, interact in the side bar of the music app and get to your playlist. Then
stop interacting and VO-right-arrow a couple times until you hear something
like this: 24 songs, 1 hour, 29 minutes, 110.8 MB button. There is the size of
a playlist.

Thanks guys. I still can’t get that far with the titles and composers.

Maybe I’ll email the radio station. Our local King FM playlist is accessible
and NC’s WCPE playlist is accessible as well.

Thanks for trying :)

Toggling dark mode

2021-02-01 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all, I’ve been Googling this morning and have found two ways to toggle
dark/light mode. One is creating an apple script, the other is creating a
workflow and saving it as an app.

The workflow as an app was super simple, but now I’m not sure if there is a way
to use a global keyboard shortcut to run it.

Is there a step I’m missing? Here’s the link where I learned the workflow.
