Help with OS 10.9, VO and Navigating Website with Frames

2013-10-30 Thread blindmacman
Hello! I maintain a website for a leather/levi social organization. The website
has a menu contents frame at the left and the main frame where the content
displays on the right. VoiceOver has never had a problem with this setup until
I upgraded to OS 10.9.

When I first load the page, VO sees both frames. After making a selection from
the menu frame, VO only sees the menu frame and no longer sees the main
frame Every once in awhile it will see it, but if I make another selection
from the menu frame and try to return to it, it will not see it the second time.

Changing between Group and DOM navigation has no effect. Enabling and disabling
Live Regions also has no effect.

Sighted people tell me that they have no problems using the website... The main
frame is being populated with the correct information... The problem seems to
be that VoiceOver forgets about the main frame (in other words, when turning
the web rotor to Frames, the only frame listed is the menu frame).

Do you have any ideas as to why this is happening under 10.9? Do you have any
suggestions as to a work around? (I can still do my work, it is just difficult
for me to proof without asking for sighted help, which I would like to avoid.)

Thanks for any assistance you may provide!

 Hi Lou,

I can confirm your findings. Here’s what I do to get around this for now.

 1. After activating a link in the first frame, press tab until you reach
an item in the other frame.
 2. If it is a link you wish to affect, press return after tabbing to it.

This is where things get inconsistent. Sometimes, I can Interact with
whatever I’ve tabbed to and then VO focus restores but not as often as I’d
like. It appears that when using VO navigation, including the Item
Chooser, most of the elements aren’t being noticed by VO. If you tab
though, they are workable, but not really in a VO way. What I mean here,
is that using VO commands makes it lose focus again whereas using OS
commands like tab and return will perform the task. I’ve also noticed
that, only sometimes, a Refresh of the page will help.

So, overall, I probably have only confirmed your findings and only given
you half-baked work-arounds. Hope it helped a little.

Re: iTunes Library location?

2012-12-10 Thread BlindMacMan
Hello Tim... First off, thank you for all your assistance over the years in
this forum! Question: Instead of step 3, couldn't you just drop everything
onto the Automatically Add to Itunes folder? Wouldn't that take care of
everything (except for maybe step 4 which should probably be done before
step 3)? Or, am I missing something here? I am interested in this because I
can see this being a To Do item for me in 2013. Thanks for your sage
advice! Lou (Blind Mac Man).

 Hi,

Four drives not including the internal one on my iMac.

You should create the Library first then move the media into the new
 iTunes Library location.

 1. Hold down the Option key while starting iTunes. This will force
iTunes to bring up a Library chooser dialog.
 2. Select Create New Library and tell iTunes to place the new Library
on your external HD. This will create an iTunes folder on the external
with all the necessary folder locations and database files.
 3. Move your media into the iTunes Media folder that was created from
 step #2.
 4. In iTunes, press cmd-comma to bring up the iTunes Preferences. In the
Advanced pane, make sure that both the Keep iTunes Media folder organized
and Copy items to the iTunes Media folder items are checked.
 5. In iTunes, press cmd-o to Add files.
 6. In the dialog, navigate to the iTunes Media folder within the iTunes
folder on the external HD then press return.

iTunes will get busy re-organizing all your media into appropriate folders
and will add all tags into it's Database. this could take a while since
you have such a large collection of media. Just be patient and let it do
its thing. You may need to fix a few things after iTunes has completed its
task depending on how well and accurate your media was tagged. Overall,
it's not a difficult thing, just may take some time.

 Hi,

There's two ways of approaching this.

First is to leave the media where it is and let iTunes simply mark where
everything is in its Library Database file. In theory, this could be
accomplished by first going to iTunes Prefs in the Advanced pane and
unchecking the box that tells iTunes to Copy items to the iTunes Media
folder. Next, you would go under the File menu and choose Add to Library
(cmd-o), navigate to the external HD where all your media is, then pressing
the Open button on the parent directory of all the media on that drive.
The only issue with this method is that I seem to recall that iTunes does
not always pay attention to that preference when your importing from
external HDs. If it works as this plan suggests though, you'd have
everything accessible to iTunes and all your devices with only the Database
file residing on the Mac's internal HD.

In the second option, you'll need to create either a new iTunes Library on
that external HD or move your existing iTunes folder over to that external
HD. In this case, when you add the media to iTunes, it will copy
everything into the iTunes folder and place them all into the proper
locations that iTunes needs in order to work properly and properly share
with the Apple TV and other iDevices. This is the method that I use
myself. The only problem could be that iTunes will try to copy all your
media into the new iTunes media location. If you have enough space on your
external HD to handle multiple copies of the media during this Library
creation process, then you'll be OK. If you do not, you will need to be
creative with where you put media prior to this process so that only one
copy of the files are on your external HD. I did this myself by making
sure that the drive was first empty then created an iTunes Library folder
onto it. I then spent time placing portions of my media on other drives,
essentially dividing it up prior to iTunes building the Library. Then when
I added the media to iTunes, it copied items to the new iTunes Library
location and placed everything where iTunes needed it to be. I did have
 the advantage

Trimming Audio in QuickTime using VoiceOver

Re: Trimming Audio in QuickTime using VoiceOver

Thanks, Esther! I did not even think of iTunes! That is a quick and dirty
solution that works... And I do not mind getting my hands dirty! As always,
you are the best... Lou (BlindMacMan).

On Wednesday, June 27, 2012 12:07:35 PM UTC-7, Esther wrote:

 Hi Lou,

I know this sounds a bit hokey, but couldn't you just use iTunes in this
case to chop out the section you want? If you don't already have the
RestartAt AppleScript, you can still download it (for the next couple of
days) from Tim Kliburn's VoiceOver Downloads page:
 http://web.me.com/kilburns/voiceover/downloads.html

Add your AIFF file to iTunes and use this AppleScript to make the fine
adjustment controls of the start and stop times that you need -- or just
use the fast forward or rewind controls to position yourself up. Then,
select the track and do a Command-I (Get Info), navigate to the Options
tab, and fill in the text boxes for start and stop time to select your
section. Change your import setting to AIFF under the General tab of
iTunes preferences by pressing the Import Settings button and then press
the Import Using pop up button and set it to AIFF. Now if you go the
Advanced menu on the iTunes menu bar there will be an option Create AIFF
version. If you select it, a second version of your track, with only the
section between your specified start and stop times, will appear in your
iTunes library. Since you're using a lossless format and going from AIFF
file to AIFF file you shouldn't lose any quality, and all the existing
tagging information will be preserved. Don't forget to use Command-I on
your original track and delete the start and stop time information on the
Options tab. And you probably want to reset your default importing
preference back to whatever you were using.

This is quick and dirty, but it all works quite simply. I suspect you may
already have the RestartAt AppleScript, but you may not have used it for a
while. There are complete instructions on how to install and use the
RestartAt AppleScript with the download, which basically amounts to placing
the AppleScript, either via copy or move, into the Library/iTunes/Scripts
folder for your account. If this is the first time you are adding an
AppleScript to iTunes, you will have to create the Scripts folder. Any
AppleScripts placed into this folder will show up on your iTunes menu bar
as items in a Scripts menu that is located just before the Help menu.
In Lion the Library folder is hidden, but you can still navigate to it in
Finder. If you want to unhide your Library folder, you can go to Terminal
in your home directory and type: “chflags nohidden Library” (without the
quotation marks) and press return. Then, just use the RestartAt script the
way you would any other menu option: highlight the track you want to work
with and navigate to RestartAt in the AppleScript menu on the iTunes menu
bar. You can fill in a staring time in the dialog box (e.g. 52:10.715 for
52 minutes and 10.715 seconds), or just accept the default value (which
will be the time at the current playhead position, that will be listed).

 HTH. Cheers,

 Esther

Mac Mini, Bluetooth Headset and VoiceOver Sounds...

2011-07-17 Thread BlindMacMan
Hello! I just got a new Mac Mini. When using a bluetooth headset, I
can hear VO speaking just fine... But the VO sounds are coming out of
the Mini's internal speakers, not through the headset... In System
Preferences, I have Alert Sounds set to come out of the Selected
Output Device. Any ideas how to get the VO sounds to come through the
headset?

Thanks for any assistance...

2011-07-17 Thread BlindMacMan
Hi Matthew! I thought that by selecting Selected Sound Output Device
from the Play Sounds Through... pop up menu under the Sound Effects
tab was the correct thing to do, especially since I had the bluetooth
headset selected as the Output device under the Output tab. Wrong!
Once I selected the headset under both tabs, the VoiceOver sounds came
through the headset just fine...

Thanks!

That perpetual scan will turn the machine to sludge. So if your HDMI

the TV, then the Mac should be happy. In my own case I use a displayport
to VGA and then a VGA to NTSC converter which makes the mac happy even
if the old tv is not turned on. There are also wiring diagrams around to
make a VGA terminator where you connect certain pins with resistors
which signal what kind of display is hooked up without a real display
connected. Nobody seems to sell the pre-made ones anymore (VGA
Terminators) but somebody good with electronics could roll their own.

Re: Accessible FTP Client

2011-07-05 Thread BlindMacMan
Thanks to everyone for your recommendations! I think Transmit is what
I need as that seems to be a heavy lifter. The problem is that my
system is a PPC iMac running Leopard 10.5.8... I love my old friend
but I think it is time to say goodbye... (Now if Apple would just
release their new goodies.)

Thanks again for your help... (And, yes, Esther, I am still here...
Trying to stay invisible in the background as much as possible. You
are terrific [as always] on this list!)

Esther wrote:
Hello Jonathan, Lou, Mark, and Others,

Jonathan, Mount as Disk is a contextual menu option that was added to
Transmit 4. I also run Transmit 3.7, and this feature is not present.
You'd have to purchase an upgrade ($19 at the Panic web site). From their
web page description of version 4 additions:
With the new Transmit Disk feature, you can now mount any of your favorites
in the Finder itself, even if Transmit's not running.

Hi Lou, nice to see your recent posts on list. I'd second Mark's
recommendation of getting Transmit from Panic software for FTP. You can buy
Transmit for $33.99 from the Mac App Store, if your system is Snow Leopard
and up to date. Alternatively, you can buy this directly from the
developer's web site. You can also get a 30-day free trial download from that
 site:
 http://www.panic.com/transmit/

If you're looking for a free FTP solution, the usually preferred option is
Cyberduck. This is actually donationware where, if you continue to find the
software useful, you donate some amount. The Mac App Store doesn't handle
this type of model, so if you get Cyberduck from there, it will cost $23.99.
 You can download Cyberduck from:
 http://cyberduck.ch/
A donation made at that site will get you a license key that will stop the
nag messages when the app is launched, There are many people who like
Cyberduck, but I've read some complaints of slow transfers.

Fetch still makes an updated software product, but I don't know of many
 people who use it.

Although you can use FTP from the server (via Command-K) from Finder, this
can be really slow. I would only use this to transfer local files, and
otherwise it hangs a lot. I wouldn't rely on this if you really need your
 download files.

 HTH. Cheers,

 Esther

Re: Contacting FileMaker About Accessability

2011-06-28 Thread BlindMacMan
I have been asking FileMaker for this for years... I used FileMaker 2,
3, and 4 for eons as they were accessible, but all versions thereafter
have not been. Calls, emails and feature requests have all been
ignored. I even took the tactic of purchasing FileMaker, then telling
them it was not accessible to me... And they told me to return it. I
have religiously been buying Bento and reporting its inaccessibility
but to no use. I even asked Apple to put pressure on their
subsidiary but they declined to help saying We have no control over
them.

I urge everyone who is interested in making FileMaker products
accessible to act, but I am not holding my breath.

When I downloaded the trial version of FileMaker Pro, I found that it was

Re: VO+f8 doesn't work after upgrade to SnowLeopard

2009-09-14 Thread BlindMacMan

Hello!

Are you trying to turn VoiceOver on by pressing Control-Option-F8 or
bring up the Voiceover Utility?

Before you can open VoiceOver Utility, VoiceOver must be turned on
(Command-F5). Once VoiceOver is on, you can open VoiceOver Utility
with Control-Option-F8.

Remember, depending upon your keyboard, settings and/or computer
model, you may have to hold down the FN key as well.

Re: About mac and airport express.

2009-09-04 Thread BlindMacMan

Hello!

I use Multiple Speakers all the time on my Mac in iTunes. There is a
simple trick to make it work properly.

First, however, make sure you do the following:
1. Open iTunes Preferences (Command-Comma).
2. Click on Devices in the toolbar.
3. Check the check box for Look for Remote Speakers Connected with
AirTunes.
4. Close the preferences.

Okay, now to set multiple remote speakers:

1. Navigate to the speakers pop up menu with VoiceOver. VoiceOver
will probably announce Computer when it is on the pop up menu.
2. Open the pop up menu by pressing VO-Space Bar.
3. Make your first selection from the speakers pop up menu with VO-
Space Bar. )For example, in my case I might choose Kitchen.) The
menu will close.
4. At this point you will probably have to navigate back to the
speakers menu, but this time VoiceOver will announce whatever it was
that you just selected. (Again, in my case it would say Kitchen.)
5. Open the pop up menu with VO-Space Bar again.
6. Make your second (or third or fourth or...) selection, but this
time use VO-Shift-Space Bar. (I also find that it seems to work best
if I hold the VO-Shift keys down an extra second or two after
releasing the Space Bar.)
7. As in 4 above, You may have to navigate back to the pop up menu
again if you want to add another speaker. This time, however,
VoiceOver will read Multiple Speakers when it is on the menu. Repeat
5 and 6 as needed.

Hope this helps...

Lou.

Re: an Itunes bookmarking question

2009-09-01 Thread BlindMacMan

Hello!

Here is how I solved this problem:

1. Create a Smart Playlist (with Live Updating turned on) called
Reading with 2 rules:
- Album is book title
- Play count is 0.

2. Create a Smart Playlist (with Live Updating turned on) called Done
Reading with 2 rules:
- Album is book title
- Play count is not 0.

Now, go to the first item in the Reading play list and listen to it.
When it is finished, the item will be removed from the top of the
Reading play list and automatically be placed at the end of the
Done Reading play list. But, best of all, the top item in the
Reading play list will begin playing without even skipping a beat.

If I remember correctly, all items must be checked in order for the
next item to begin playing automatically.

Hope this helps.

Lou.
