Hi yes I am in the UK so Fios is not an option for us. We have providers like
Sky, Virgin and Bt but their boxes leave a lot to be desired for accessibility
and I do not wish to pay extra anyway if I can get all my programs on the UK
version of Freeview. Just my £0.02 worth.

RE: Apple TV Questions/Considerations?

2017-12-17 Thread Simon Fogarty
I find that really interesting

I have had the last three versions of the apple tv and I can't say I've been
upset by the lack of so called accessibility
We don't get a lot of audio description with new Zealand tv shows unless you
purchase a set top box which is a free view system that costs a lot more than
apple tv does
Also needs to be in a number of cases setup using non English language and
region settings,
Where as I plug in and setup my apple tv using voiceover and by my self,
I down load the apps and content I wish to have
And movies I purchase or rent off itunes allow me to have AD if the movie has
that feature enabled.

Hello, personally I do not recommend Apple TV. while it has some good parts,
like out of the box accessibility, there are some bad parts too. In my
experience of using Apple TV, both third and fourth generation, whilst there
were lots of content available, the majority of them were not audio described,
apart from what's available on Netflix and uk based BBC iPlayer. I also thought
the paid subscription services from both uk based TV Player and Now TV were
also a waste of money. As a result, I have now gone back to free to air
television where most, but not all, programs feature audio description, and
there is no cost other than an annual TV license which is required to watch and
record live television as well as using BBC iPlayer, including downloading and
streaming on demand content.

Actually, not very many Amazon Prime shows have audio description. For those
that do, audio description is automatically switched on. For people who look at
the ACB list, most of the shows on said list are not included in the Prime
line-up. They cost extra to watch in Amazon Prime.

Hi Christopher,

Are you in the UK? I don’t know if that makes a difference or not. For the time
being at least, I don’t intend to get rid of my Fios TV option. So, are you
saying that if say, Fios offers programs that are described for blind viewers,
then Apple TV over-rides that and the descriptions are not available? That
would be a game changer for me.

Hi,

If it’s one of the new apple tv 4gen or 4 k devices then a triple click on the
top left hand button that is the button diagonally opposite to the longer
volume button.

The little screen is at the bottom of the remote when you hold it up,
So in that position the top left hand button three quick presses.

Jeff,

Thanks. While I was able to feel the unit in the store they did not have it
hooked up for any service. Would you mind letting me know which button on the
remote gets pressed (I’m assuming the triple press) to turn VO on? The girl
while knowledgeable about the phone was not able to tell me much about the
Apple TV & VO or how to get VO up and running without the unit actually
operating.

Thanks. Looks like I’ll be getting them!

1. All the Apple TV needs is an HDMI port—the TV doesn’t have to be smart.
2. I don’t use Amazon Prime, but I suspect it is an app and, therefore, as
long as Amazon has programmed in accessibility, it will be fine.
3. The Apple TV is fully accessible as it has Voiceover builtin.

I have a couple of Apple TV IV units and haven’t had any trouble doing the
administration of them myself.

RE: Apple TV Questions/Considerations?

2017-12-16 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi,

I’ve got a 32 inch Samsung tv which is 9 years old and it works fine with my
apple tv 3g 4gen and 4k,
The 4k doesn’t have the same screen res but it still works So I can’t see what
trouble you’d have.

And Yes I believe just recently amazon released an apple tv app for amazon
prime.

Subject: Apple TV Questions/Considerations?

Hi All,

I will be getting Apple gift cards from turning in a few devices I no longer
use. I’m considering getting 2 Apple TV’s with the gift cards. I want to be
sure I’m doing the right thing before purchasing them and encountering problems.

First, I have relatively new television sets, Samsung 32” inch, but I really am
not sure if it is a “Smart” TV. I know the TV’s have HDMI ports which are
needed for Apple TV. If they are not Smart TV’s will it make a difference with
using Apple TV? I don’t want to get the Apple TV only to find out that I’ll
have to upgrade TV’s that are only 3-4 years old and in totally good condition.

Second, the tech people at Apple tell me the Apple TV will work with Amazon
Prime which is the only alternate type of service I have in addition to my
cable provider. Does anyone know if this is correct?

Finally when I was in the Apple store I saw the Apple TV, I think it was the
IV, and I’m wondering what anyone else’s experience has been with accessibility
for a totally blind person in both using it as well as getting it set up? And,
also I know they come with either 32 or 64 memory and I’m wondering how to
determine the better choice for myself. I probably won’t use it for looking at
pictures, but am not sure of the reasons why I’d need greater memory. I’m
wondering what other types of things the device can do other than the various
TV watching apps. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much.

Re: Apple TV Questions/Considerations?

2017-12-16 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,

First if you click the siri button and say turn VoiceOver on, this will work.
Secondly, we also have VIOS and although the TV one time authorization
functions do not work with VIOS, you can authorize the Comedy Central, HBO, AMC
applications to give you access to older content from these channels. I have
not personally done this authorization, but generally it involves logging into
your Verizon account on a phone (or perhaps computer) and entering a code that
appears on the TV.

One final thing, apparently with Samsung sets the TV will automatically turn on
when the Apple TV wakes up.
Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Hello All,

Sorry, just one more thing I forgot to ask in my original post. Currently with
my cable set up, I have text to speech turned on so I can do a few things using
the Fios remote. However, it drives me crazy that I cannot use on Demand with
the Fios remote. Will having an Apple TV make navigating an option like this
and the menuse offered through Fios any easier?

Thanks again.

Jeff,
