Hi,

I need to upgrade the disk in my Macbook possibly and i need to know
what i can do with my old one. I am debating putting it in my Mum's

get a FW enclosure for a Macbook drive? That way I can mount it inside
my G3 using the internal FW port.

Thanks,

Re: Hard Drive Access.

2009-04-01 Thread Esther
Hi,

On the new intel MacBook and MacBook Pro models you do not void your
warranty by installing a new drive or upgrading RAM. In fact, Apple
has guides describing how to do this for the MacBook on their support
site -- which will even tell you which size screw driver you need. On
the PowerPC laptops you did void your warranty if you replaced the
hard drive.

I'm pasting in the information excerpted from a post in early February:
begin excerpt
You can get manuals for any of the computers from the Apple Support
pages. Google on Apple support manuals then type macbook in the
search field on that page. To look for instructions on replacing
memory and hard drive, try typing macbook do it yourself in the
search field. You'll get links to PDF manuals for memory replacement,
hard drive replacement, battery replacement, and a slew of other types
of replacement at:

http://support.apple.com/manuals/#macbook%20do%20it%20yourself
end excerpt

Just FYI the hard drives of the older Intel MacBook Pro laptops
(before the Aluminum Unibody MacBook Pro model) are harder to access,
and there are no do it yourself instruction sheets on replacing those
at the Apple Support site. You can add these resources from Apple to
the nice guides that Chris linked for instructions on upgrading
MacBook hard drives (including how to clone the content).

For recent posts, you can read the mail archive site for the new list
at:

http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries@googlegroups.com/

where you can search, read through threads with access keys (e.g.
Control-n for next in thread, Control-p for previous in thread using
Safari), and view the latest posts as either a time-ordered set of
item links (Control-i) or content/threaded set of item links (Control-
c). These posts are really simple to search for and link. I haven't
found a simple way to direct people to our Google Group web posts in
any way that's as easy for VoiceOver navigation.

Incidentally, using the mail archive site makes it much easier to read
threads that go on over a period of time, or where some posters just
include a sentence or two where you're trying to figure out the
context. I use this site whenever reading email is inconvenient.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: Hard Drive Access.

2009-04-01 Thread ben mustill-rose

I've upgraded ram, optical and a hdd on a bondy blue imac, optical was
a bit of a bugger but once its done, its pretty easy to do it again.
Probably the hardist apple I had to service was a ibook dule usb
500mhz. sadly that machine died shortly after the upgrade but it was
showing inverter faults before it was opened anyway.

I'd love to be able to swap the 5400 drive in my emac for a nice 7200
one but can't find any howto's on opening the emac 1.42 - anyone?

I'm usually not that fussed about finding a guide or anything but this
is my main mac and I don't really want to kill anything.

Re: Hard Drive Access.

2009-03-31 Thread Scott Howell

It depends upon which Mac you are talking about. I have not attempted
to open one of the prior Macbooks, but I have had the opportunity to
open a Macbook pro in the unibody and the drive is very easy to
access. The ram I can't recall right off, it has been a while. As far
as upgrading ram in an iMac, no problem at all, I however have to
admit that I have not had the nerve to open it. :) I understand if you
can get it open, then upgrading the drive in it would not be a
problem. This is why I would love to have a notebook as upgrading
parts would be a little easier. These new iMacs are not as simple to
disassemble. :)

Not sure Dave, but I believe that does not void the warranty. When in
doubt check with Apple of course. However, I recall the drive and ram
are user servicable parts and why not, they are right there, so you
don't have to tear the machine apart to get at them.

I found these instructions which might be helpful:

The drive is a standard 2.5 SATA drive. Here are a few starting at
 $48
for an 80GB up to about $100 for a 500GB.

 Thanks.

Hey Sandi, are they some sort of hex or torque screws? The allen or

Re: Hard Drive Access.

2009-03-31 Thread Cara Quinn

Hey Scott, they are star-shaped TORX drive screws.

And yes, to those curious, I too have replaced ram and HD in one of
my white MacBooks. So yes, it can easily be done by a VI / blind
person (and a blonde! lol!) if they read well, the instructs and
follow them.

Check with Apple on the warranty however, I too remember hearing
both the HD and memory being user-serviceable, but will also go look
this up right now. I'll write back if / when I find out definites. K?

   Have a rockin' day!

Smiles,

CQ :)

Re: Hard Drive Access.

2009-03-31 Thread Scott Howell

Well if I ever get up the nerve to disassemble and upgrade the drive
in my aluminum iMac, I should probably consult with your gentle blonde
mind. :) Seems you have the same attitude I have, but with a great
deal more gentleness. I'd have cursed and kicked it into submission
probably. :) The next time I get up to Best Buy, I'll have to check on
the drive screws and see what they are.
