MacBook Pro Speakers

2009-07-24 Thread Keith Bucher

Hello,

I would like to hear from anyone who owns or has seen the 13 and 15
inch MacBook Pro models MB991ll/a or the MC118ll/a.

I saw them in a Best Buy, but it was fairly noisy. The 15 inch
model had speakers on each side of the keyboard, while the 13 inch
model's speakers seemed to be either in the screen or just beneath
it.

I'd like any opinions on any difference anyone has heard in the
volume of the speakers between these two models. To me, the 15 inch
MC118ll/a sounded a bit louder, but I wasn't able to determine if it
would be loud enough to justify the approximate $200 increase in
price. I have been unable to find specifications on the size of
the speakers used in each model. But from what I could tell in that
fairly noisy environment, the quality of the sound sounded fairly
similar when comparing these two computers. Thanks for any
information.

i have the 13 inch mbp, and love it,
when i was upgrading the ram, i found a surprise, there in addition to
the 2 speakers faceing up, is a small speaker under the bottom facing
down. i believe this is intended to give a fuller sound.
i didn't notice any differences from the 13 and 15 inch mbps.

Hi Keith,
I own the new 13 inch MBP and I cannot tell any differench MBP and an
older 15 inch MBP. I cannot tell any difference between the volume
levels of the two machines. Your second question about quality of the
sound is too subjective for me to give you an answer. If you are
worried about sound queality; I'd use external speakers.

Re: MacBook Pro Speakers

2009-07-24 Thread Abdul Kamara

Hi Keith,

I agree with much of what has been said on the topic so far... The
output seems to be the same and quality is too subjective a thing on
which to make a definitive claim.

What I can say is there are possibly other considerations you should
take more onboard, assuming you haven't already. I don't know about
you, but there are only a few times I travel without my macbook, and I
am on the road a lot. It is my source of entertainment,
communications and the means through which much of my work is done.
In my case, size really does matter-- the smaller the better. Weight
is a moot issue, as much of it is on my back.

It is possible that you are looking at spending $200 for an additional
2 inches you may not need, and (if you're as persnikity as I am about
these things) the 15 inch may agitate some space issues when on the
road.

If it's simply that you are low vision, and would benefit from a
larger screen, then get the 15 inch. Otherwise, less is more.

Best,

Abdul

Re: MacBook Pro Speakers

2009-07-24 Thread Scott Howell

That speaker facing down is a subwoofer believe it or not. Honestly I
didn't notice a really massive difference in sound. THe 15-inch does
seem a little louder, but then the speakers might be spaced a bit
further out and I believe they are more under the keyboard on the 13-
inch. However, I purchased the 15-inch not for sound, but difference
in processor performance etc. Btw, can you tell me where the ram is on
the MBP once you remove the bottom cover? I haven't poked about in a
laptop much and might just be missing it. I'm pretty sure they are
generally laid out the same.

if you remove the screws, and the laptop is upsidedown, the hinges for
the display towards you, the ram is on the left hand side about 2
thirds of the way up.
the ram is stacked, so you will only see one chip, the other one is
below the first.
hope that makes sense.

Re: MacBook Pro Speakers

2009-07-24 Thread Dave Wright

I'm in the process of saving for an MBP myself. Just out of curiosity, what
is the difference in processor performance between the 13 VS the 15? From
what I've noticed online, it's possible to get the same processor
configurations for both? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Re: MacBook Pro Speakers

2009-07-24 Thread Scott Howell

Thanks Chris. I don't know why I couldn't find it, but then there is
this cover on something on the left side. I of course am not sure if I
mentioned this is the model with the battery you cannot replace. with
the cover off my MBP, the hard drive is on the left and the battery is
on the right and there are two fans almost in the middle a bit more
toward the rear or where the screen attaches. So, I'm not sure, but
imagine these machines are similar. THanks and I'll have another look
and it may be that I was looking for something a little larger than I
was expecting.

Re: MacBook Pro Speakers

2009-07-24 Thread Scott Howell

The MBP 13-inch tops out at 2.53Ghz I believe and the 15-inch stock
tops out at 2.8Ghz, but I think you can get a 3.06Ghz chip. I can't
recall all the particulars, but for me it came down to three things.
FIrst my wife's machine which was a first generation Intel iMac was
having some issues, so I made the decision that if I was going to
replace the machine, I'd get a notebook and give her my 20-inch iMac.
Secondly I wanted to replace my iMac with a machine with similar
specs, and finally third, I didn't want to wait and I quite frankly
can't go into that, but there was a need. Point is if you can get the
machine via the Apple store online and order it the way you want,
great. If not, the 15-inch does offer more in terms of cpu speeds etc.
when your talking stock. I'd love to have gotten the same MBP in a 13-
inch box, but I didn't have that option. Of course just get a system
you can live with for a while because I like to try and keep them for
as long as possible. :)
Good luck, you'll be happy with whichever machine you purchase.
