2017-11-10 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Tim,

I’m happy to work in the terminal but it’s more my linux knowledge is not
really up to scratch,
Yet my power shell and dos skills are fine.

But yeah GUI I think at this point would be easier.

But then hey gotta learn sometime and nothing like jumping in the shark tank to
learn to swim.

Hi,

Yes, I do lots via the Terminal as well, but Simon was mentioning that he
wasn't comfortable working in the Terminal, hence, alternative GUI methods.

Simon,

If you're MacBook is running the same MacOS as the Server, and all you're
wanting to do is manage the Server settings, then you don't need to do anything
special Just install the Server app onto your MacBook, open it, press cmd-n
to open a new connection, select Other from the table, then enter the IP of
your router. You will have first needed to set up a forwarder that will
forward requests that come to the router for Server Admin tasks to be forwarded
to your Server internal IP. With all that set up, you can manage the server
using the app on a different Mac. The limitations happen when you're using a
different version of the Server app on each machine these won't properly talk
to each other. I just have a drive with multiple MacOS's on it with multiple
versions of Server app. So, when I want to manage an el Capitan server
installation, I use the 10.11.6 installation and so on for Sierra etc.

Simon,

There is likely a "Take Control of MacOS Sierra Server" eBook out there. The
Take Control series are usually quite good books. Other than that, there's
good stuff just on the Net. Just do a search on what service you wish to get
more detail on, along with MacOS Server in the search parameters and there's
lots of helpful material. I've mostly did all my Server stuff the second way
and I've got Leopard, Snow Leopard, El Capitan and Sierra servers all going
within our domain.

Hi,

It's possible that the keyboard is beginning to fail. It used to be possible
to change it out, but I'm guessing that it would be rather difficult to get the
part now with how old that machine is. You could connect an external USB
keyboard to see if things perform better. That would tell you whether the
keyboard on the MacBook is starting to die, or if it's just a speed thing. I
have the Server app on my MBP, but mostly just use it to remotely access other
servers in our domain. You could have some fun enabling DNS and DHCP to see if
you could mess up things at work, just deny it if they figure out that it was
you :).

We have some of those white MacBooks still hanging around. Use them in our
Robotics programs for when the High School students go off to the Elementary

Hi,

Normally, you should be able to go to the Purchased tab within the AppStore and
download previous versions of the Server app. The caveat here is that you must
have purchased that app using the same Apple ID. You may not see it yet, but
once you install Mountain Lion or Mavericks on to the MacBook, and log into the

RE: Mac OS Server

2017-06-22 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Tim,

That’s what I thought also however it’s not what I’m getting,

I got everything but the server installation media.

I even had an app for server that I got approx. the same time but no server
installation media.

I then thought I’d try it with an update to el capitan, same thing no server
os available.

So it gave me the option to purchase sierra server and as it’s only 29 dollars
here in nz, I thought stuff it and I’ve purchased it.

I only hope the machine will take the sierra installation

It’s installing now a dual core 2.26 GHz processor and currently 4 gb ram,

I’ll upgrade that to 8gb tomorrow if I can get to the local store.
Interesting what you can do with an old machine.

Think this is a 2010 Mac book,
The white plastic ones.

Hi,

Normally, you should be able to go to the Purchased tab within the AppStore and
download previous versions of the Server app. The caveat here is that you must
have purchased that app using the same Apple ID. You may not see it yet, but
once you install Mountain Lion or Mavericks on to the MacBook, and log into the
AppStore, that version of Server should still be available to you. Note that I
use the word "should". That's my favourite word when helping people with tech
sorts of things :).
