Yes, you're correct, Brad. I was trying to point to the time of
acquisition, but could have been more precise about that.

Re: Am I write and thinking that the Mac mini from 2018 does not have a headset jack?

2020-11-18 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Hi, Matthew:

OK, since you already have the replacement unit and assuming the same
behavior turns up, you have another option.

There are converter plugs that will swap the appropriate leads. If you
can find the appropriate converter plug, this may be a workable option.
You may want to contact the manufacturer of those speakers, if possible. They
need to
be more on top of such things.

Good luck, and let us know how you progress.

Best,

Janina

Yes, and mine is currently working just fine connected to a Mackie 1202
audio mixer. The Mackie seems tolerant both ways around as I've had all
manner of audio devices connected without issue.

Don't bother replacing the speakers. The same thing will happen. Unless they
have a model specificallyh designed for Apple Mac or IOS devices, I would
simply return them for a refund and look for a different option.

If you look under about this Mac, you will find that your 2020 Mac mini, is
really a 2018 Mac mini.

Don't bother replacing the speakers. The same thing will happen. Unless
they have a model specificallyh designed for Apple Mac or IOS devices, I
would simply return them for a refund and look for a different option.

I should have read further into this thread.

I'm now willing to bet I'm correct in pointint to a wiring difference.
This has been a bone of contention between Apple on the one hand, and
Windows and Android on the other for some years. It has been less of an
issue with 3.5 ports disappearing, but the two eco-systems wire up
differently.

Re: Am I write and thinking that the Mac mini from 2018 does not have a headset jack?

2020-11-16 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
There are several such devices out there.

I first encoutered them with a Senheisser headset some years ago. The
headset cable terminated in a pair of 3.5 mm plugs, one for headphone,
one for microphone. Senheisser also included a USB dongle with two 3.55
mm jacks for those cables so that one could either plug directly into an
3.5 mm analog port, or use the DAC builtinto the dongle for a USB
connection.

As to what's going on here ...

I'm recalling that the 3.55 port on my 2013 era Airbook will function
both as an analog audio port or a SPDIF digital connection. Somehow, the
interal circuitry autorecognizes what you plug in.

I have noticed that some of my headphones work well with the 3.5 analog
audio output, but others do not. I never chased down the distinctions
further. My point is that there are multiple ways these can be wired
between what signal goes from tip, vs from ring, etc.

Could be the wiring of your 3.5 mm connecting cable. Have you tried swapping
cables?

2020-11-15 Thread Brad Snyder
That would be my assumption as well.
I’d send the speakers back to Amazon for a refund, and get something else.

Hi,

I have a couple of questions about this, and I’m sure you’ve looked at these,
but I feel better at least asking. First, do you have any other devices with
3.5-inch jacks that you can connect your speakers to, do they work with these
other devices? Next, do you by chance have a pair of headphones that have a
3.5-inch mini plug? If so, have you tried connecting these headphones to the
jack on your Mac mini? Also, if there’s a volume adjustment somewhere in System
Prefs, have you checked it to make sure you have it at any level, like maybe
even 50%? Another idea, if you have music on your computer, try playing a song
or other audio content. I’m wondering if there may be something in VO that’s
affecting things when you switch audio output from internal speakers to the
output jack. Finally, perhaps something is muted? I hope these aren’t too goofy
a bunch of questions.

Matthew,

Would you be willing to share the brand and model of your speakers? I’m
intrigued by you saying that the cord has a USB plug on one end and a 3.5-inch
plug on the other, and I’d like to learn more about the concept.

Thanks,

Re: Am I write and thinking that the Mac mini from 2018 does not have a headset jack?

2020-11-14 Thread Brad Snyder
Well, I have no explanation for this. The external audio jack shows up on my
2018 Mac mini with or without anything connected.
I am running macOS Catalina 10.15.7.
