Re: Installing braille embosser

2016-01-04 Thread E.T.
Got a response from Enabling and its simple, OS X is not supported
on the old Juliet Classic. So I will look around and see if I can find a
newer embosser that needs a home. For what I do, I cannot justify a new one.

On the other hand, surely it is only a matter of identifying the parallel or
serial device that appears on OS X, assuming that the chipset is one supported
by a USB driver. In which case, I imagine one simply sends the ASCII braille
file to the embosser much as it used to be.

What does OS X say your USB device really is. Check in System Information
under USB. Check the detailed info in the pane once it’s selected.

Re: Installing braille embosser

I’ll probably get one too soon. Do you have a Windows computer around at all
if so you wouldn’t have to justify anything cause you could send the document
to the Windows computer and just hook the embosser up there. Even better, put
your Mac and Pc on a network together and then you may be able to send it
directly over to the Pc.

Re: Installing braille embosser

2016-01-04 Thread E.T.
Yes, have a Dell laptop. I don't have the space in here to keep both
it and the Mac running. I have been thinking about this and keep coming
back to going full time with the Mac. Really only have two tasks that I
need Windows for. I could do without one and with a new (or newer)
embosser, Windows would be out of a job.

Re: Installing braille embosser

2016-01-04 Thread Grant
Have you tried using a virtual machine to operate your embosser using your
Windows application of choice? It's not an ideal solution per say, but it's
precisely this kind of task to which a VM is most suited. And since you can
share data between Windows and OS X, no data duplication should be required.

Best,

Grant

Re: Installing braille embosser

2016-01-02 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
I don’t have one yet.
I have just heard that they should work with the mac.
Now i have a blista brailletech which was great using windows but their support
refuses to create drivers for the mac for some reason.
I guess its because the printer itself installs a virtual com port under
windows.
Its an ftdi device and i have not had any luck installing such to the mac.

If it's a parallel to USB adapter, then it won't appear as a serial port but
as a parallel printer port. I don't know what the device names are under OS X,
but there may be a device node in /dev. System log files may show whether the
device is recognized.

If it is recognized, you're in luck. Otherwise, I can think of two options:

1. Find a parallel to USB adapter that OS X does recognize or for which there
is a driver. This has nothing to do with the embosser itself.

2. Configure the embosser for serial output, and connect a serial to USB
adapter that OS X can recognize. I've jused a Juliet embosser in the past
(under Linux, not OS X). It had both serial and parallel ports and you could
switch between them with configuration commands issued via the key pad.

Re: Installing braille embosser

2015-12-31 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
I don’t suppose you’ll get much use out of OS X’s printer subsystem for
handling the braille embosser.

If you do in Terminal:
ls /dev/cu*

What is returned, apart from your Bluetooth ports?

Hopefully the port is just serial-USB so you can simply send embossable text to
it in standard ASCII form. Test it out with a braille file, as short as you
can of course so as not to waste the paper.

the question I have is, how do I know if /dev/null is the embosser? And
there is another option in that Send to list which is /test.output.

Hopefully the port is just serial-USB so you can simply send embossable text to
it in standard ASCII form. Test it out with a braille file, as short as you
can of course so as not to waste the paper.

Re: Installing braille embosser

2015-12-31 Thread Scott Berry
Firstly, you need to know what port your embosser is on. /dev/null I am
thinking just does a .brf file port.. So basically it loops back to itself and
creates the .brf file. Now it should tell you how to install the embosser
itself. I think I have a copy of Louis Braille here and I’ll take a gander and
see if I can get more info for you.

Anders,
Which model do you have of Index? If this is what I need to get for
the Mac, then I will have to work it out. One thing that appeals to me
is the Basic model is half the weight of my old Juliet. Be so much
easier to move around.

No. You need to be able to send unmodified ASCII text to the device. OS X uses
Cups as its printer control software. There's a "raw" output option that might
work.

You'll need a braille translator (if you don't have one installed already).

You might also be able to bypass the printer control software entirely. If the
device appears to the system as a serial port, you could write to it, e.g.,
with the cat command. What you want is to send BRF files directly to the
embosser without modification.

Re: Installing braille embosser

2015-12-31 Thread E.T.

Jason,
This appears to be where I am. Still think in Windows so had
expected to do a similar setup in OS X.

I want to use Louis and looked at it this morning. I ran the
Terminal command offered to me earlier today which did not show me any
serial ports. So that must mean that OS X cannot see the USB connection
that Windows can using the parallel to USB cable. That is the deal
breaker because the Juliet is too old and I do not expect Enabling will
have drivers.

So if the Mac cannot see the port, I cannot send to the embosser.
Correct?
