Hi Donna, I've not yet tried this but can't see why it wouldn't work. Re: using Sonos with multiple controllers?
Yup? You sure can. You might have to get a little help doing it, Donna, due to the current accessibility status of the mac controller, but go to: http://www.sonos.com Click on the download link. From here, do a find on the page for "Mac" without the quotes. Download the controller and connect it to your main Sonos network, which BTW that much is totally accessible. Now, once that's done, You'll need to add both your music folder from your home directory, and let it index things, and you'll also want to check the box in the controller app on the mac running the ITunes library you want to share/keep updated in sync. So, to do this, from the controller, in your menu bar, click on manage. In here, choose Music Library Settings. It's the 3rd option down in the menu, if that helps. Now, in here, make sure you're on the folders tab, then hit the little plus symbol. Voiceover will call it the add button. Now, in here, you've got three radio buttons: The one you're probably by default going to be on is to add your music folder, which is usually where ITunes stores your library. This normally is perfect. Unless you have a specific reason, don't change it. Just for your knowledge though, this is where you'd also tell it that you want your library to reside in another folder aside from your music folder. Or, if you have a network NAS drive, say maybe like on a time capsle or something, you could link to it. That's a bit beyond the scope of this message, but I wanted you at least to know that those options were there, just FYI. Once all this is set, click on Next. On this machine I'm at now, I don't have any music in my ITunes, so I can't really right now tell you beyond this point what'll happen. I don't totally remember from when I did it on my production machine in the studio, but it should be pretty obvious from here. If not, let me know, and I'll figure it out for ya. As I said, if you need me to call you, then write me off list, and I'll do so at a time which works for you, and talk you through this. Hopefully, this helps. Re: using Sonos with multiple controllers?
Believe you me Donna, you are not the only one who's majorly impressed! May I add that their staff on the phone support line are, um, to say phenomenal! would be a downright insult to them! That is the mildest understatement of the melinium! They are fan, freaking tastic! Very very few companies/developers have cared so much about accessibility, and their customers. I've tweeted them on Twitter, @Sonos by the way, and literally each time, I'd say within an hour, provided it's business hours, I have a response. This is quite consistent of a turnaround. It's a shame that their OSX version of the controller app isn't the most Voiceover friendly. I mean, it can be done, don't get me wrong here, but there are lots of unlabeled buttons, some of which you manually can figure out with help tags, but not all of them are such. Some don't have tags. Now, like Donna said though, if you're thinking about trying this speaker system, I can tell you this. The Windows version with both JAWS, and NVDA is incredible! The iOS version also is rock solid as can be, and the Android version, well, items within a list, like when you're browsing your library will tell you that they are checkbox items, checked or unchecked, which isn't really true, so they're not exactly classed correctly in Android, but! that said, they definitely do read, and with Talkback it's 100% doable. Maybe a little weird how things are read, but definitely very manageable. Stay tuned though, as far as the OSX version is concerned with accessibility. As a private beta tester of their controller apps on all platforms, I can't really say anything more due to NDA, but we'll just say that some things are in the works that I think'll blow you guys away once released. Really that's all I'm at liberty to say though, but yes. Plus1 all the way, I concur with Donna completely here, and if you've never heard the sound of these speakers, even for the littlest model, the Play1, oh? My? God! Holy! freaking? catfish! I'm an audio engineer, so you know me... I gotta have very very good quality sounding speakers/monitors. These speakers have absolutely taken my breath away! They're not exactly cheap, I'll admit that, but for what you get quality wise? Plus, the accessibility right out of the box, plus the level of excellent tech support/customer care you get? If you have the money to spare for at the very least, a Play1, you'd be crazy then not to try it! --- Christopher Gilland JAWS Certified, 2016. Re: using Sonos with multiple controllers?
OK, Donna. Here are a few things. Firstly and foremost, are these songs you're wanting to play sinply just in your music library, or are they actually literally downloaded to your phone locally for offline listenning. If they simply are just added to your library in the cloud, but are not literally downloaded, then the controller isn't gonna see them, so beware. Provided that they are actually locally downloaded, whether you've purchased them, or just downloaded them with Apple music, doesn't matter, either way, as long as they are actually residing on your device, then here's what you do. First, be sure that your main Sonos system and the device using the controller app are both on the same wifi network. If you are doing the extended bridge method with the ethernet cable, then I'm not totally sure how that would work, as I've got my Play1 set up over my wifi. I have good enough wifi signal throughout my house that it's not a problem in the least. OK, so, on iOS, remember your music menu in the top left corner of the controller app? Go ahead and double tap on that to open up the menu with all your currently installed/configured services. Now at the top of your screen, you'll again see the music menu, flick right once, and you'll be on the room menu. It should say the name of the currently selected room. I'm sure you know most a this, but I just wanna be sure we're both totally here on the same level of understanding. Flick again to the right and you'll hear search. Go again. You should hear Sonos favorites, then again, Sonos Playlists, then again, things may change here a little bit, depending on what services you have set up. So past this point, I can't tell you as you flick exactly what you're going to hear, but generally speaking, you should hear on this IPhone/IPod/IPad. Now, double tap on that. OK, now there should be tabs across the top of the screen like playlists, artists, albums, genres, songs, compilations, composers, and finally, podcasts. So double tap on the one you want to view your IPhone's media by. In my case, I'm going to select Artists, just as an example. Now of corse, whoops, this just had to happen to me, LOL! I don't have any music currently on the phone. Dang it! Oh well, there went that idea of me giving you an example. Oops? Well, ok, the point is, had I, it would then, going down the screen virtically, have had a list of my artists. I then could have simply just double tapped the artist, then the album, then either the song to play, or, I could have tapped the item above all the songs when within the album itself to play the complete disc. If what you're saying is, you want to play music from your library say from media on an external hard drive or whatever, then you have to add the folders first that you want the controller to index on that machine. I'd be more than happy to type up a tutorial on how to do this, if it would help you out. Also, if you'd like to write me off list with your number, I'd be more than happy to set up a time to call you and talk you through this step by step, if that would make it easier. Re: using Sonos with multiple controllers?
Hi Donna, Another thing you can do with Sonos is to put all your music on a network drive and build a library which can be accessed from any Sonos controller. Hi Chris, That's my next step. But since I know there are several people on this list who use that system, I thought I'd ask here first.
