Re: what devices/appliances are people using with Apple Homekit?

2018-11-26 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi Jeff!
The smartlock you’re using, does it has nfc or is it only remote controlled?
I would like to have something that would unlock when you put your device
(iphone or google ) against it.

Re: what devices/appliances are people using with Apple Homekit?

2018-11-26 Thread Jeff Berwick
I do not believe it has NFC, but it does work with both Google Home and Home
Kit and can unlock your door on approach. You can also allow other people
access to the lock if need be and I purchased a keypad to go with it which can
be placed outside. In this scenario, you can give people a four digit code for
them to enter your house.

Re: what devices/appliances are people using with Apple Homekit?

2018-11-26 Thread John JD Denning
It is cool that we can do that. But I see it only as a workaround. I don’t
really care to use the Google assistant. Though creating the Siri shortcut it’s
seamless from my end.

I did add all my devices to the Google assistant since they all work with just
about every platform out there. But I prefer using Siri. So the nest is the
only thing that I have to do this way. And it does work well.
It’s rather easy to set up. First you have to set up your Google assistant app
on your iPhone. Then use it to do various functions with your nest. After you
do them once then they will be in your Siri shortcuts suggestions. So then all
you do who is at a phrase and you’re done.

So for example are use the Google assistant to set my nest thermostat to 70°.
Then I went to settings for Siri and under the suggested shortcuts was set the
thermostat to 70°. So I added the key phrase, and now all I have to do is tell
Siri to set my thermostat to 70°. It launch is the assistant app and tells it
to do it. So it can only be done from the phone since it needs to launch the
Google assistant app.

Violin Tuning App

2018-11-26 Thread Todor Fassl
Perhaps this is a long shot but I was hoping to get a recommendation on
a violin tuning app. I have an iPhone and an iBook Pro so either IOS or
MacOs recommendations will work.

What I am hoping for is an app that uses the microphone to listen to the
note I am playing and tells me whether it is too high or too low. Tha's
the big challenge for an amateur like myself.

Re: Thinking about running windows 10 on my MBP but first a few questions

2018-11-26 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
You've got a USB 3 port on that machine, no? I should think you'd prefer
to use that with at least a 128 Gb USB 3 stick.

I can tell you I'm running Linux using a 256 GB Sandisk USB 3 stick on my early
2014 Airbook. It's working quite well--though I'm not using the Linux
graphical desktop mainly because I don't have a good reference of
keymappings.

Best of all the stick doesn't stick out of the case very far. In fact it
sticks out less far than the Apple power connector, by about a quarter
inch less.

Are you looking to avoid Bootcamp altogether for some reason?

If you go the route of Windows on external USB media, I suspect your
main problem may be figuring out how to configure it's EFI so the Mac
will see it on boot. Thankfully, you should still have the boot
chime--something that's gone away in newer Apples, afaik. However, you
may still need device drivers for your Apple hardware. These are
generally provided by Apple via Bootcamp. From time to time I've had
notifications on my Windows desktop that driver updates are available
for these. You'll be doing this part by hand, somehow.

I also have Windows 10 on my machine, but under Bootcamp, so that I have
three operating environments to choose among when I hear the boot chime.

My next step is to give myself the option of running one of these under
OS X via Virtualbox.

Bluetooth Keyboard Commands

2018-11-26 Thread 'E.T.' via MacVisionaries
Recently I got the Logitech K780 keyboard and have been playing with
it on my iDevices.

First, is there an up to date list of keyboard commands for iOS?

Second, the commands for invoking the control center and
notification center is option up and down respectively, after putting
focus on the status bar. They do not work. The commands for the Apple
wireless keyboard are fn-VO-up and down also do not work on the Logitech.

Anyone seen this? All the other commands that I tried do work, The
equivalent commands for a braille display work fine. Input please. Thanks.

Re: Thinking about running windows 10 on my MBP but first a few questions

2018-11-26 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
So, I don't believe Bootcamp requires you put your Windows partition in
any particular location. It's quite easy to find this topic discussed in
various postings on the net. Try searching with the Google machine.
Here's just one such:

https://9to5mac.com/2017/08/31/how-windows-10-mac-boot-camp-external-drive-video/

And, here's another:

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2952697/bootcamp-external-hard-drive.html

Bottom line is you can, but you have some additional work on the Windows
side of things with the booting process.

So, given that, may I ask why you don't want to use the internal disk on
your Mac?

Re: Violin Tuning App

2018-11-26 Thread Eileen Scrivani
I use an app that I launch by saying “launch Talking Tuner”. I would search for
Talking Tuner in the app store. And, if that doesn’t work when you search the
app store, try “Hot Paw talking tuner.” Sorry, it was my husband who originally
purchased the app so I’m a bit uncertain of the exact name for purchasing it.

It has the exact features you mention. It will state the note name sharp &/or
flat and will tell how much it is off by in a percentage. It will also tell you
when you’re dead on the note.

Good luck.

Subject: Violin Tuning App

Perhaps this is a long shot but I was hoping to get a recommendation on
a violin tuning app. I have an iPhone and an iBook Pro so either IOS or
MacOs recommendations will work.

What I am hoping for is an app that uses the microphone to listen to the
note I am playing and tells me whether it is too high or too low. Tha's
the big challenge for an amateur like myself.

Re: Thinking about running windows 10 on my MBP but first a few questions

2018-11-26 Thread 'Dan' via MacVisionaries
Hello,
Ok, let me start over. I guess I really confused the situation.
I wish to install windows 10 on my mid 2014 MBP. In the instructions it says to
use a usb 2.0 32 gb drive. This is for all the installation stuff. Yes, I know
that bootcamp puts the actuall windows installation on a partition on my SSD.
So my questions are these.
1. instead of a 2.0 usb stick can I use an external usb hard drive to do the
same as the usb stick.
Also, how long can I run windows 10 without a product key before deciding to
purchase windows.
Hope I untangled my questions regarding installing windows 10 on a MBP mid 2014
model year.

hi,

Probably your most up-to-date resource would be the Apple Books version of
iPhone or iPad User's Guide for iOS 12.1. I don't have your model of keyboard,
only an Apple wireless keyboard or the special keyboard thing on my iPad Pro.
For me, the FN-VO-up/down will open the Notification and Control Centres, as
well as the Option-up/down while in the Status bar. I do know that some third

Re: Thinking about running windows 10 on my MBP but first a few questions

2018-11-26 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Sorry I took your questions in a direction you'd not intended.

Can you install from USB? Certainly. USB won't care whether you attach a
stick or a mechanical drive.

How long can you use it without paying up? I've no idea. Microsoft.com
will have the answer somewhere, though. And, maybe someone else just
knows.

Can you use Narrator for the install? Absolutely. Check out this podcast
which has been pointed to in the past on this list. It's a very helpful
guide:

https://iaccessibility.net/iacast-democast-14-installing-windows-on-a-mac-accessibly-with-bootcamp/

Good luck!

Re: what devices/appliances are people using with Apple Homekit?

2018-11-26 Thread Jeff Berwick
No, not at all.

I thought it might be hard to install, when I looked in the box, but it was
actually really simple. I had the help of my 14 year old and we installed it
ourselves. Basically, you take the thumb knob off the inside of the door and
then attached the August lock. The app walks you through the setup process.

There is a bridge that you plug into a nearby outlet and there is another small
device that you just stick near the latch of the door—this helps to identify
whether the door is open or closed.

I had some connection issues at first and their support staff were good over
the telephone.

 Hi Donna,

All of the products I use work with Homekit They also work with Google
Home. I have both systems in my house, so I wanted cross compatibility.

The iHome ISS50 is a 5 in 1 sensor. It can report back on things such as:

 temperature,
 humidity,
 motion,
 sound and,
 light.

Apparently, sound monitoring doesn’t currently work with Homekit, but you
can monitor through the iHome Control app.

 all of them accessible.

Big savings today on the instant pot Wi-Fi for US customers of Amazon

2018-11-26 Thread Mary Otten
I just saw an article which mentions that the new Insta pot WiFi model is going
for $89 and some on Amazon in the US. This is the one that has the less than
fully accessible Wi-Fi app which may or may not be made accessible. The buttons
on the unit itself are apparently accessible. So if you are interested in this
device, and have some faith that they will clean up their act accessibility
wise, this is a huge savings. I don’t know if it’s available in Canada. The
article did not say.

Re: what devices/appliances are people using with Apple Homekit?

2018-11-26 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi John,

I don't seem to be having the same luck. I logged into next, and it said I was
connected, but when I tell Google Assistant to set the temperature, nothing
happens, or I should say, I'm prompted to watch Youtube videos about connecting
to a nest thermostat. Our nest is about six years old, it's a 3rd gen I
think,. Do you know if we need a newer unit for this to work? If so, I'll
probably just get the Eco, since it works with Siri.
Cheers,
Donna

Tim,
This has been an interesting experience. I had no trouble with the
Apple keyboard but gave it to a friend. I got the Logitech because its
multi device which works nicely.

This morning I encountered a strange issue. I wanted to add a
contact from Recents in the phone app. Even when the edit field was
active, I could not enter characters with the onscreen keyboard. Both
the Logitech and the braille display were turned off. Yet while at the
store having my coffee, I had no trouble carrying out this task. Strange.

Is the option up/down command in an Apple Book? I've seen many
references to it in Google searches from 2017 back. Maybe I will get the
user guide from Books.

First, is there an up to date list of keyboard commands for iOS?

Second, the commands for invoking the control center and notification

Re: Help with partition

2018-11-26 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

You may get some extra dialogs and such if your drive is APFS, but this is the
basic gist of it. If you're running from your original MacOS and just wish to
remove that second partition, then go into Disk Utility, press cmd-2 to view
the full disk info. Next, interact with the table of devices and bring focus
to the name of the device drive. This is not the volume names, but the name of
the device drive itself, such as "APPLE SSD AP0512J Media". Stop interacting
with the table and navigate left to the Toolbar. Interact with the toolbar and
navigate to the Partition button, then VO-space on it. Locate the Partition
Map Pie Chart item and interact with it. VO-space on the partition you wish to
remove, then stop interacting with the pie chart. Navigate to the Remove
button and press it. You should get some confirmation dialogs. Confirm that
you really wish to do it, as everything on that partition will be erased and
unrecoverable. Once you confirm it, the partition will be removed, and the old
partition should automatically be expanded to use up the free space.

Re: Bluetooth Keyboard Commands

2018-11-26 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

It sounds to me like the Logitech keyboard is still hanging on in some fashion,
even though it is powered down. I'm assuming that you've fully powered it
down, not just put it to sleep. Sorry, I don't have one of those units to know
exactly how it is set up. The VO-fn-up/down is noted in the Apple book for
sure, but I not sure if the Option-up/down method is referenced in the book as
well. I'll have to take another look.

The book is free and easy to navigate through on an iOS device.

Re: Team viewer or what can we use?

2018-11-26 Thread Anne Robertson
If you mean, can you read his ID and password, no. They are the two things you
need to be able to connect. Your friend will need someone to read them out to
you. However, the ID never changes, it’s just the password that changes with
each session.
Cheers,

Anne

Operating a HomePod with more than one device

2018-11-26 Thread Mary Otten
Hi all,
I was just listening to David would bridges podcast where he set up his
HomePod. And of course he was in the home app. I have an iPhone 7 Plus which is
no longer acting as a phone, since it doesn’t have a Sim card in it, although
it will do Wi-Fi calling as long as it’s on the Wi-Fi network where my real
iPhone is. I got the impression as David did his set up that you might only be
able to control the HomePod from a given device. So I’m just wondering if I
have to be careful which device I set my homePod up with. That is, if I were to
use my iPhone xr to set up the phone, can I then use my iPhone 7 Plus to do
airplay, say of an audiobook from audible or whatever. Or can I only airplane
from the device on which the set up was initially done? I hope that makes sense.
Mary

Re: Operating a HomePod with more than one device

2018-11-26 Thread Jeff Berwick
The description page for HomePod indicates that friends connected to your home
wifi can play music through your HomePod, so I suspect you’ll be okay to stream
to the HomePod, but you may wish to use your main iPhone for the setup to
ensure access to your calendar, messages and mail.

Noe, you can control it from more than one device. It’s based on your iCloud
account not the physical device. And then you can allow or disallow guests to
use it people on that your Wi-Fi network.

Re: Team viewer or what can we use?

2018-11-26 Thread 'Shawn Krasniuk' via MacVisionaries
Hi all. I find that when using FaceTime, nobody can hear my computer and I
can't hear their's. Because of this, I recommend you use Skype if you need to
hear the other computer. This is if both parties are using Facetime on Macs.
However, if both of you use Facetime on your iPhones, you won't have this issue.

Re: Team viewer or what can we use?

2018-11-26 Thread Des Delgadillo
Hey Ramy, please do let us know how this ended up working out for you. I'd love
to know that with Skype TeamViewer might be the solution I've been looking for.
In the past I quit using it because of its lack of useability. Perhaps with the
implementation of Skype it will be a different story.

You have to turn VO off on your computer to be able to use VO to pilot his.
