Maemo mapper maps

2008-07-31 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi,
I have just installed OS2008 on my N800 but i have some problem with maemo
mapper in particular there are some problems in downloading maps. Google
repository doesn't work and with the others maps in zoom level 0 or 2 have a
very low resolution.
Can someone suggest me something to resolve the problem ?
Thanks

Luca

Re: DUN via bluetooth - with Verizon?

2008-02-22 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
While I'm not sure about DUN with a Verizon bluetooth phone and the
n800, you can easily connect the n800 with a Verizon phone by activating
bluetooth in both devices and have them search for each other, then
connect them with .

While connected, you can transfer files (like music, videos and
pictures) to various spots on the phone from the N800.

I'm not sure about how to access the web via the Verizon phone's
broadband via the N800, since I've not got it activated.

I hear you there. It would be nice if someone could port a simplified
version of OpenOffice, or some other reasonably decent WP to the Maemo
platform for those times when you need to edit and don't have online
access.

IMHO, most of the current crop of text editors that I've run across are
throw backs to the way early 80s -- barely more than what some computer
prof might assign as a weekend programming project for a first year
student to create. A big advance would be something that comes close
to the first edition of Wordpad on Windows in the early 90s, which
handled rich text. There's an editor that attempts to create html text,
but it's sort of inadequate, even for that, in my limited experience
fooling around with it.

Re: installing skype on N810

2008-01-31 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
BTW, short of Skype being available on the 2008 OS n8xx platform, there
is the 'almost free' option to use Gismo project and just phone out
whoever isn't on Gismo with minutes you buy for a notch less than 2
cents a minute. I'm not sure how it all works, but apparently
according the Gismo web site you can also use the same minutes for video
conversations with various messenger services that support video such as
Windows Messenger Live (or whatever it's called), if you really want the
video option instead of pidgin IM. Twenty bucks gets you 1000 minutes.
Not free, but pretty close. Also, the minutes don't disappear at the
end of the month...

Re: Strange Surffing Problem

2008-01-30 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I've seen this sort of activity when trying to browse a page that for
some reason absolutely requires IE (if not also IE7). It may have
something to do with IE specific Active X applets. Well designed
webware should provide a work around for other browsers, but this isn't
always the case. Lazy web programmers who only live in the world of IE
frequently don't give a rat about the world outside their own. When
accessing this sort of page outside of IE, your browser may just lock up.

Also, this sort of BS isn't limited to internet tablet browsers -- I've
also encountered it on my XP computers using Firefox.

One of the recent examples of this feature (where there was a
workaround) was the Australian Open (tennis) which had IBM hosting of
the event. The "Scores" page of current games would not work properly
with Firefox on my tablet or XP computer running Firefox -- but at least
came up with a message to click for the 'html' version of the page. Or
you open IE, if you're in an environment where that is an option and
things should work as designed.

I didn't try it during the AO, but during the US Open (tennis), which
had a similar IBM hosted site, the n800 (2007 OS) browser locked up when
you tried to play the internet radio feed of the event's top tennis
match. As best as I could tell, it required some sort of IE active X
applet to run the radio feed. You'd wait and wait and wait and nothing
would happen. Locked up...

Always, drfredc

Re: Nokia NXXX With A Phone!

2008-01-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Clearwire has offered voip for the broadband wireless service around
here for almost a year in our area (Seattle, WA USA). I think our area
has been part of their beta test.

Bandwidth seems to be a modest problem in our local experience
because Clearwire wireless broadband is a popular option in our semi
rural area where cable and DSL have spotty availability, at best. It's
possible that there's only one local hot spot for Clearwire Wireless
with lots of folks logging into the system. We seem to have an
'evening' traffic jam almost daily until 10 pm. Possibly some sort of
Warcraft/XBox Live overload -- when the kids in the are go to bed, the
bandwidth seems to increase markedly.

We tried the voip with Clearwire Wireless early last year when they
first opened up to voip -- it was marginal at times. I still
occasionally use my n800 to make calls from my home via Gizmo. It works
fine, when the bandwidth is good.

It's all undoubtably something that is being constantly dealt with by
some local technology/bandwidth upgrades by Clearwire. In general,
we've been happy with Clearwire Wireless. You can also take the modem
with you and get Clearwire wireless broadband anywhere it's available.
You're not limited to any particular address.

Correct. Windows is the world's largest and most pervasive virus.

Hmm... Thanks for the info. I think I've got the adapter, somewhere,
maybe. I recall something like it coming with my USB HDTV thingy so one
could extend the thingy further from a noisy laptop or computer.

Do you suppose a "keyboard" kernel would have to be reflashed and/or
rewritten when the next OS update comes out?

Outside of linking to another USB port, do you have any idea of what
other devices might/does the n800s USB port work with?

I see the "email polling" as more of a feature than a problem. My SOP
is to just ignore the built in email program as much as possible. The
polling is a very minor side show in most respects. As part of ignoring
it, I set it so it deletes mails older than a couple days old... or
something like that.

It would be nice to be able to configure Claws (or whatever email
program one uses) as the default email program. I suppose that will
happen at some point as development moves forward. For all I know, it's
possible now, if one knows how to poke the right buttons. IMHO, there's
other things that ought to take a higher priority, like seemless OS
upgrades.

Re: [maemo] ??

If you're using an internet tablet email like the n800s generic email,
install the Claws email program from Maemo. With Claws, you can create
all sorts of filters (like "maemo" in the subject, to and/or cc
category) plus create various folders to sort the good from the bad to
support the multi personality's that many have on the internet. There's
also a plugin that allows you to view html mail and pictures.
Supposedly there's an app to port Thunderbird and probably Outlook stuff
to Claws but I didn't use it.

Fine print -- store the Claws data file on one of your cards, not the
internal memory so it survives OS updates.

Auto Backup

2007-10-02 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Is there an automated scheduled back up utility somewhere on Maemo that
would allow one to automatically back up the unit in the middle of the
night when it's idling along/charging?

Seems like a no brainer utility that ought to be available.

Always, Fred C

If you limit your curiosity to those over 90 minutes, you'll
purposefully skew the results, which really isn't appropriate.

I'm a 20 minute flash and restore kind of guy, back in August when I
got the unit back from warranty service due to it's brick like
behavior. Most of that time was spent watching TV while the unit and
laptop did their work.

However, it's possible that it's easy and short for me because I've
kept things relatively simple on my N800 with a couple games, Gizmo
Project, Quiver photo viewer and Claws mail being just about the only
additions. I've configured about 20 RSS feeds and 4 weather stations.
I've tested a fair amount of other stuff from Maemo, but then when I
find it of limited value or unfunctional, I remove it to keep the
clutter down. It seems to speed boot up keeping things simple. I
gather it may also help the restore process...

I guess the fine print is I've only recently started messing around
getting Claws Mail up to full speed with filters and stuff, so it might
be possible that I might have to spend some time fussing with restoring
some Claws settings there from a restore, but then again, perhaps not.

Re: Canola never finds any media

2007-09-07 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I had this problem, and deleted the junk.  Like most, I'm too busy to
wade thru junkie installation failures and funky kludge fixes.

Maemo needs to have a way for end users to quickly note apps that don't
install cleanly without hassles.

I had this same problem, but I solve it by adding a new user:

adduser --shell /bin/false avahi

Just remember to disable this user after that.

Hi,

Recently, I have this problem too. This is because, canola's
installation was no successfully finished . This happen in the
installation of avahi-daemon (canola dependency), because he try to
access /etc/shadow file, but is not present in the n800 device. To solve
this I used xterm to create a /etc/shadow file based on /etc/passwd (see
shadow file in any linux distribution, for details) . After creation of
/etc/shadow file, you can use the command apt-get install -f, to fix
canola's installation.

Good luck,
José Luís

Is there some magic to making Canola actually find local media? Using
the Web-based configurator, I have /media/mmc1 and /media/mmc2 in the
Media Library. There are several gigs of MP3 files in folders on mmc1,

can't do
anything but sit there and tell me "No items found" when I select "Audio
Library."

Re: Better Clock Applet?

2007-08-30 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I agree. There's no reason that a 'clock' needs to be so big,
especially on a device that displays web pages with text so small. I'm
also not sure why it needs to use graphics instead of just a simple text
display.

maemo -mapper

2007-07-29 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi, just a little question about maemo mapper,
When set maps management to download maps along my route (a 650 Km path in
Italy) with a 1 set in radius and only zoom 0 set
a dialog with a request to download more than 800 maps for 48959 MB.
Is this dimension possible or, like I hope there are some errors in my program
setup ?

Thanks
Luca
