Re: [mailop] Recommendation for inbox provider?

Hi,

+1 for Fastmail from me.

One of my family members uses Mail.de - so far, so good with them. Some
friends of mine use ProtonMail.

I'm not happy with the homogenisation of email service. We've got to keep
the bigger players honest :)

Kind regards,

I think protonmail's business model is about being secure and private within
the bounds of Swiss law.

The case you mention, is about Interpol asking data about a user, which is
normal and legal.

railing against the power held by so few major mail providers, yet are

It's a little difficult to recommend a local hosting provider without
knowing what "local" means. Anne's original email did not specify.

Catering to this particular demographic is tricky though. I agree that
sending their business (or any business) to the large mail providers is
bad for the greater email ecosystem. On the other hand, a boutique
email provider may struggle to explain to this demographic why their
emails aren't being delivered to mailboxes hosted by the large mail
providers.

There isn't much of a middle ground. Unfortunately.

Their power is rooted in how well they meet the market where it is.

I would like the inbox providers I work for to get many more inbox
customers, even if it's only a pile of one-user domains. I cannot in
good faith tell a potential customer that they will be happier with a
small provider (even one I work for) than they would be with a faceless
behemoth. I wish that were true, I work pretty hard to make it true
(esp. with my primary employer,) but I know from also playing the admin
role for migrated customers now on M365 that it is very hard to get
small businesses to care about what we can do better more than they care
about what MS does better.

As Michael said, I think most non-technical small businesses *SHOULD*
care more about having a human to call for support. In fact, they care
more about never needing to call anyone for support, although some of
that is due to reduced expectations. Freemail has done an excellent job
of making end users expect minimal value in email service.

I can make a case for boutique email providers (which is where I earn a
living) to people who understand and appreciate the value of what a
small provider can offer that the big guys don't. I know from direct
experience that the bulk of the small business market can get all that
they need in inbox hosting from MS or Google substantially cheaper than
if they went to FastMail or Runbox or one of the companies I work for.
There are also valuable features (office app integration,

cannot.

There are lots' of companies that do email hosting, but you mentioned
she is 'tech challenged'. In this case, they should NOT be looking for
a large hosting company.

She should find a local hosting provider, someone that she can pick up
the phone and call, but of course you get what you pay for.

If she is looking for 'free' or 'cheap', she won't be happy.

And most email hosting providers, aren't in the business of looking for
the small one or two mailbox accounts, hard to make money and provide
good service. Unfortunately that means that usually the only providers
that will make it easy, are the ones that go for complete 'automated'
signup, and automated support.

And it depends what they want. If they WANT o365 capabilities, then
probably they should go to o365. If they want simple, secure email then
there are LOT's of companies in this space. Even sometimes their own
ISP might offer the ability to host their own domain, depending on the
connectivity package they purchased. I would start there for the
technically challenged ;)

Will test with one of my domains dedicated for experimental/fun stuff,
and hopefully migrate my real stuff soon.

Now on to read the docs, searching how to set up relay from my internal
Postfix instance to MXroute as this would be my preferred modus
operandi, at least for now. I will probably not bother with anything
inbound, so if your servers delete my outbound messages and related

Apart from the buck a month web hosts, the only one that comes to mind
is MXRoute (their main guy is often on this list)

I used to recommend Rackspace, but not too sure about the long term
future of their email hosting division. _(Disclaimer: I worked there
for three years)_

All,

either 365 or Gmail. Surely there must be others out there? Anybody
have one they recommend? Bonus if they help with authentication

2021-09-06 Thread Brielle via mailop
Are they only needing something super simple and like one mailbox?

If they have an iPhone/Mac/iPad and pay for at least the $0.99 iCloud storage
plan, can now add a custom domain for free to iCloud email at:

https://beta.iCloud.com

IMAP and smtp are fully supported.

Hi Neil

Will we see DNSSEC & DANE support enabled for Fastmail anytime soon ?

Hah! I was just going to reply -- what about Fastmail?

If I was ever going to quit hosting my own mail, I'd be looking at
Fastmail.

Interesting to say the least. GoDaddy's decision is possibly motivated
by cost/benefit; by the excessive power of the oligopoly; or most
likely by both. But what motivates expert mailops to only reccomend
the oligopolists as an inbox host?

Is not outbox, with its deliverability issues, the more complex part of
the service?

I am fine with my crappy old inbox, but I am still looking for an SMTP
service to deal with the deliverability issues, most of them caused by
one of the oligopolists. Sending customers their way will only make
internet email even less useful?
