Painters and engravers working in Antwerp at the end of the 16th century such as Marten de Vos, Adrien Collaert, Philip Galle and Marcus Gheeraerts all contributed independently to the creation of standard personifications by their symbolism. One of the first and most extensive contributions is the article by Erich Köllmann a.o., 'Erdteile', in Reallexikon zur Deutschen Kunstgeschichte, ed. by Ludwig H. Heidenreich and Karl-August Wirth (Stuttgart, 1967), vol. 5, cols 1107-1202. The literature on the subject has been assimilated in the thorough study by Sabine Poeschel, Studien zur Ikonographie der Erdteile in der Kunst des 16.-18. Jahrhunderts (München, 1985). It is not surprising that mapmakers were among the first to incorporate personifications of the continents in the decoration of their products. The symbolic figures supplemented very suggestively the geographical contents of their world maps and title pages of atlases. Abraham Ortelius included a set of personifications on the title page of his Theatrum orbis terrarum (1570). He depicted four contintents as women, while a fifth continent, the unknown southern continent 'Magallanica' is represented only by a woman's bust. Only two Dutch mapmakers represented even six parts of the world on their world maps. On his famous world map from 1594, Petrus Plancius depicted Africa (in the lower right corner) as an almost naked figure riding a crocodile, armed with bow and arrows . A hat and a parasol protect her from the heat of the day. See: http://www.zoomcatch.com/wallpapers/download/97702/1421/1101 In 1604 Pieter van den Keere (Petrus Kaerius) issued a new edition of Plancius's world map, but the positioning of the scenes in the elaborate pictorial borders has been reversed. Van den Keere still mentioned Plancius as the author of the map on the 1604 issue, but replaced Plancius by his own name on the second issue of 1607. Only very few examples of Van den Keere's map are known. Both cartographers also produced a large wall map surrounded by the personifications of the six parts of the world. Plancius's wall map of the world of 1607 is only known in two later states. The 1651 state with the imprint of Cornelis Danckerts (Royal Library, Copenhagen) and a 1676 state (private collection in Sweden). Van den Keere's wall map, issued in 1611, is only known by a unique and well preserved copy in the Sutro Library in San Francisco. [MapHist] Oldest known city map of Antwerp

The hand drawn map (c. 118 x 200 cm) is probably the oldest known city map of Antwerp. This extraordinary map is of the utmost importance for the study and the history of the city. The representation of the houses on the city map is typical for medieval drawings of cities up to 1530. The map is probably copied from an early 16th-century original to which late 16th-century buildings were added. The city is surrounded by both the late medieval city walls and the Spanish city walls (1542), although this situation has never actually existed. On the backside of the map, there is another interesting document: a map of the network of rivers surrounding the city of Ghent. This map can be dated between 1540 (building of the citadel) and 1577 (new city walls, not yet on the map). This map is probably one of the oldest known hydrographic maps of this part of Flanders. This wonderful document has suffered a lot during the last four centuries. At the moment it is conserved in four large and several smaller fragments. Some parts are missing. After restoration the maps will be made available digitally for researchers and all interested spectators. Almost all these sheet maps are at 'conventional' scales - 1;100,000, 1;50,000, 1;25,000. Except for a couple of Belgian maps - Anvers 1893, and Bruges and S E, 1913, both at 1;40,000. Anyone know why Belgium alone chose this unusual scale, or do I just need to get out to more 2nd hand map shops? [MapHist] Programme ICHC 2011?

It is very difficult to convince my employer to go to a conference if there is no programme available yet. Application procedures for foreign travels take some time ... and the deadline for the cheap registration fee is 31 March. The News-page of the website http://www.ichc2011.ru/index.php?r=405 mentions that We expect that the website will be fully updated no later than February 1st, but there is still no detailed progamme available online. But what a pity to find out that the online edition is incomplete. Following pages are missing: - p. 10-11 (= nrs. 14-17) - p. 48-49 (= nrs. 108-113) - p. 56-57 (= nrs. 129-134) - p. 64-65 (= nrs. 150-153) Pages 13 and 14 have changed places and page 55 is slanting. I know by experience how difficult it is to get all things right in a scanning operation. The scanning of early books by Google for Google Books, for instance, is also very poor: folding illustrations are mostly not unfolded. I hope you can improve the online edition, so that we can all enjoy the use of this publication. Probably many of you know the story: In 1973 German historian Arno Peters (1916-2002) went to public with his world map projection, that have led for three decades to an intensive controversy on map qualities and on social impact to cartographic self-conception. Though vehement rejection by the cartographic scene his map became something like a track record. You find it on the cover of Willy Brandt's North-South commission report in 1980, in Germany it caused a public debate on maps in TV news (in the End-1970s), the map has been propagated by Christian development organizations like Christian Aid and Oxfam (in Germany it is still distributed by the Evangelical Mission Agency), it has been published by the National Council of Churches (US), and it was distributed by UN organisations UNICEF and UNCTAD. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gall-Peters_projection) Now I am looking for academic, political, and public statements on the projection, on Peters, and on the Peters controversy. Beside German cartography I am familiar with the Anglo-American academic discussion (e.g. A. Robinson, M. Monmonier, J. Crampton, P. Vujakovic, J.P. Snyder). Due to the Anglo-American/West-European focus of databases like JSTOR it is quite hard to get into discussions of the Spanish speaking world or the former colonized countries in Africa and Asia. Especially for a historian is it yet complicated to identify the major cartographic/geographic journals in these regions. In particular I am interested in any reference to the Peters map * made by political organizations, initiatives and so on, * made/published in Central and Latin American journals, * made in journals or by organizations of the former colonized countries in Africa and Asia, * potential discussion in Eastern Europe. Robert Halleux, Carmélia Opsomer en Jan Vandersmissen (red.), Geschiedenis van de wetenschappen in België van de Oudheid tot 1815. Gemeentekrediet / Dexia, Brussel 1998, p. 201: Eveneens in 1537 publiceerde Mercator zijn eerste kaart: de Amplissima Terrae Sanctae descriptio ad utriusque testamenti intelligentiam, een kaart van het Heilige Land. Deze kaart, waarvan lange tijd werd gedacht dat ze was verloren gegaan, werd in 1920 herontdekt door de Italiaanse historicus Roberto Almagià (1884-1962). Er bestaat nog slechts één exemplaar van. Dit bevindt zich momenteel in de Bibliotheca Communale Augusta te Perugia. De gegevens die Mercator op de kaart heeft aangebracht, werden ontleend aan een verhandeling van Jacob Ziegler (1480-1549) over het Heilige Land: Quae Intus Continentus Syria, ad Ptolomaici operis rationem.
