Abstract

The Cuvier's beaked whale, Ziphius cavirostris, is a cosmopolitan species
and the only beaked whale species commonly found in the Mediterranean Sea.
Five strandings of Cuvier's beaked whale were reported along the
Aegean/Mediterranean Seas coasts of Türkiye and northern coast of Cyprus in
2016-2017. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region (430-444 bp) and
cytochrome b (cytb) (382-424 bp) sequences each revealed two different
haplotypes (four out of five individuals had the same haplotype for each
locus) on these stranded animals. The control region haplotypes were
identical to two previously identified haplotypes from the Ionian (Greece)
and Adriatic (Croatia) Seas. Only one of the cytb haplotypes had previously
been described from the Adriatic Sea (Italy) and the other one was detected
for the first time. In a comparison of these haplotypes with Cuvier's beaked
whale haplotypes previously reported from outside the Mediterranean Sea, the
Mediterranean subpopulation shows genetic differentiation based upon the
presence of two unique haplotypes. Additional mtDNA sequences from the
Mediterranean Sea are needed for a better understanding of the genetic
population structure of this species and to elaborate more concrete
conservation measures.

[MARMAM] Cuvier's beaked whale mass stranding in Cyprus, Mediterranean Sea

2023-02-23 Thread Arda M. Tonay
Dear All,

We would like to inform you that there have been Cuvier's beaked whale mass
stranding in Cyprus, Mediterranean Sea in the past weeks.

On February 9-13, 2023, a total of 12 beaked whales were stranded, seven in
southern and five in northern part of Cyprus. Most were dead when they were
found, but some were alive, however, despite all efforts, none of the
stranded whales survived. According to the preliminary results of the gross
necropsy made on five whales on the north, it is assumed that they had died
due to gas embolism caused by acoustic trauma. According to NAVTEX data,
there were planned navy exercises with firing across large areas in the
eastern, southern and western parts of the island on the days when whales
stranded. All countries should cease their planned/unplanned naval exercises
in the eastern Mediterranean, as there are concerns about the increase in
stranding events.

Abstract

The Finike Seamounts (Anaximander) was declared as the "Finike Seamounts
Special Environmental Protection Area (SEPA)" by Republic of Türkiye in
2013. In order to determine the presence of cetaceans living in the region
and its adjacent waters, visual observations were carried out with the
standard line transect method as well as passive acoustic recordings at 21
stations in two boat surveys in spring and autumn 2021. A total of 1621
nautical miles were covered in both surveys. Sperm whales were detected
visually and acoustically. Other deep-diving species, Cuvier's beaked whale,
was observed once, as well as delphinid species, such as the striped
dolphins (two groups) and bottlenose dolphins (7 groups). Delphinids were
also detected acoustically in 8 stations. Although the surveys were made
only in two seasons in one year, it was shown that the cetaceans use the
surveyed area and their presence must be taken into consideration in the
management of the Finike Seamounts SEPA.

[MARMAM] New publication on stranding records of sperm whale on the Turkish coast in 2019-2020 with a note on the opportunistic sampling of stomach content

2022-01-31 Thread Arda M. Tonay
Dear All,

Apologies for cross posting.

We would like to inform you that the new paper on stranding records of sperm
whale on the Turkish coast in 2019-2020 with a note on the opportunistic
sampling of stomach content has been published in the Journal of the Black
Sea/Mediterranean Environment.

The pdf copy is available online via the following link.

Abstract

Three sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) strandings are reported from the
Turkish Mediterranean coast between 2019 and 2020. The first individual was a
juvenile found in July 2019 near Fethiye, in the west. The second individual, a
neonate, stranded in Adana in the east, on 10 August 2020. The third case, a
sub-adult/adult, stranded on the beach of Antalya, in the west on 14 August
2020. It was buried on the beach and excavated about two months later. During
the excavation, a hard plastic food container was found, which contained
cephalopod beaks and other plastics providing an opportunity for partial
stomach content analysis. A total of 60 lower beaks were identified belonging
to eight species. Umbrella squid Histioteuthis bonnellii was dominant,
representing 30% of beaks encountered. Dry total weight of four plastics (hard
plastic container, nylon bag, 1.5L PET bottle and packaging item) was 197.2 g.
This opportunistic sampling allowed us to collect information on the stomach
contents of this creature, which is rarely stranded on the Turkish and eastern
Mediterranean coasts. Dietary studies on stranded marine animals are of great
importance in monitoring environmental plastic levels and impacts on wildlife
in this region. In the last 50 years, six sperm whales stranded on the Turkish
coasts, five of them in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, which implies that this
area is probably close to sperm whale habitats. Improvement of the stranding
network as well as surveys for the distribution and abundance of this species
to elaborate and implement effective conservation measures are recommended.

[MARMAM] New publication on cetaceans and marine litter in the Black Sea

2020-11-02 Thread Arda M. Tonay
Dear All,

Apologies for cross posting.

We would like to inform you that the new online book on marine litter in the
Black Sea has been published by Turkish Marine Research Foundation (TUDAV). In
the book, there is a review paper on cetaceans and marine litter in the Black
Sea.

Tonay, A.M., Gül, B., Dede, A., Öztürk A.A. 2020. Cetaceans and marine litter
in the Black Sea. In: (Aytan, Ü., Pogojeva, M., Simeonova, A. Eds.) Marine
Litter in the Black Sea. Turkish Marine Research Foundation (TUDAV) Publication
No: 56, Istanbul, Turkey. 236-246pp.

Abstract

Marine litter, especially plastics, is an essential source of danger for
cetaceans. Since the Black Sea is a semi-enclosed sea with numerous rivers
flowing in, marine litter accumulated here pose a serious threat to the three
cetacean species inhabiting the basin vulnerable. This paper reviews the
studies in the Black Sea since 1956 on the relationship between marine litter
and cetaceans. Impacts of marine litter on cetaceans, especially entanglement
and ingestion, have been compared with similar cases elsewhere in the world.
Since there are very few studies on the relationship of marine litter and
cetaceans in the Black Sea, we cannot elucidate the effect of the increase in
marine litter on cetaceans in recent years, thus further and continuous studies
are needed.

[MARMAM] New publication on fin whale stranding in the northern Aegean Sea

2020-09-17 Thread Arda M. Tonay
Dear All,

Apologies for cross posting.

We would like to inform you that the new paper on fin whale stranding in the
northern Aegean Sea has been published in the Journal of Black
Sea/Mediterranean Environment.

http://blackmeditjournal.org/first-record-of-a-fin-whale-balaenoptera-physalus-stranding-on-the-northern-aegean-sea-coast-of-turkey/

Abstract

A stranding of a fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) was reported for the first
time from the Turkish coast of the northern Aegean Sea. A part of skeleton;
posterior part of skull, a part of left mandible, ribs with mummified tissues
of an individual were found in Saros Bay near Danişment village. The stranded
whale was likely to be a juvenile as the estimated body size (13.5-14 m) was
lower than the mature body size of those in the northern hemisphere. Although
many parts of the specimen were missing and the exact date of the stranding was
unknown, the information about such strandings of rare and threatened species
like the fin whale is valuable in terms of understanding the regional
distribution of the species.

[MARMAM] New publication on population genetic structure of the short-beaked common dolphin

2020-07-11 Thread Arda M. Tonay
Dear All,

Apologies for cross posting.

We would like to inform you that the new paper on population genetic structure
of the short-beaked common dolphin from the Black Sea and the Turkish Straits
System has been published in the Mitochondrial DNA Part A.

Tonay, A.M., Uzun, B., Dede, A., Öztürk A.A., Danyer E., Danyer Aytemiz, I.,
Bilgin, S., Öztürk, B., Bilgin, R. 2020. Population genetic structure of the
short-beaked common dolphin from the Black Sea and the Turkish Straits System.
Mitochondrial DNA Part A. DOI: 10.1080/24701394.2020.1788008

https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/24701394.2020.1788008

Abstract

Our study aims to assess the population connectivity, evolutionary history, and
conservation status of the short-beaked common dolphin in the Black Sea and
Turkish Straits System (TSS). We also include DNA sequences from the Atlantic
Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea to provide a regional perspective to our
localized study. Analysis of 366 base pairs of mitochondrial DNA D-loop
fragments from 37 samples collected from short-beaked common dolphins in the
Black Sea, TSS, and Aegean Sea revealed 13 haplotypes, eight of which have not
been previously reported. While analysis of samples archived on GenBank
revealed 89 different haplotypes across the region. The haplotype network
contains two main peripheral groups that include individuals from all
locations. Haplotypes from the Atlantic Ocean are scattered across the network
and no obvious population separation was detected. Some shared haplotypes
potentially indicate multi-directional colonization events of the Mediterranean
Sea from the eastern Atlantic Ocean. Moreover, some less widely distributed
haplotypes suggest some level of more recent genetic connectivity through the
Strait of Gibraltar and the TSS and point out the importance of these straits
in the dispersal of short-beaked common dolphins. The haplotype and nucleotide
diversity values were lower in the Black Sea, TSS, and western Mediterranean
Sea when compared to the Atlantic Ocean, supporting the expansion of Atlantic
populations into the Mediterranean and the Black Seas. Differentiation was
observed between the Atlantic Ocean, and the Mediterranean Sea, TSS and the
Black Sea based on Фst but not between Mediterranean and the Black Seas. For
common dolphins, which have high dispersal potential, the protection of open
seas and narrow seaways to enhance connectivity may be crucial.

Abstract

A sighting of a group of false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens) was
reported for the first time in the northern Aegean Sea. It was also the
first reported sighting in 25 years for the Aegean Sea. Eight individuals in
total were recorded in a footage taken by a local fisherman. During the
hauling of the handline, it was observed that one juvenile came to the line
to play with it. The information of such sightings of rare species is
valuable to understand the regional biodiversity.

[MARMAM] New publication on sightings of cetaceans in the Western Antarctic Peninsula

2017-10-03 Thread Arda M. Tonay
Dear All,

Apologies for cross posting.

We would like to inform you that the new paper on sightings of cetaceans in
the Western Antarctic Peninsula has been published in the Turkish Journal of
Zoology.

The pdf copy is available online via the following link.

Abstract

During the cetacean surveys of the first Turkish-Ukrainian Antarctic
Research Expedition conducted on 5-8 April 2016 in Lemaire Channel, Penola
Strait, Flanders Bay, southern Gerlache Strait, and southern Neumayer
Channel in the Western Antarctic Peninsula, 74 humpback whales (Megaptera
novaeangliae) in 24 sightings and 11 Antarctic minke whales (Balaenoptera
bonaerensis) in 6 sightings were recorded. The overall encounter rate
(number of sightings/survey effort in nautical miles) was 0.333 (0.266 for
humpback whale, 0.066 for Antarctic minke whale). According to the sighting
distribution, the Lemaire Channel and Penola Strait are important migration
and feeding habitats for whales. Five humpback whales were photo-identified
individually by natural features on their flukes; one of them had a match in
the Antarctic Humpback Whale Catalogue. The matched individual was first
recorded on 30 August 2007 at Salinas, Ecuador.

[MARMAM] Unusual mass mortality of cetaceans in the western Black Sea

2016-08-01 Thread Arda M. Tonay
Dear All,

Apologies for cross posting.

In the last two months, there have been mass mortality of cetaceans on the
Black Sea coast of Bulgaria and Turkey. Most of them are newborn or juvenile
harbour porpoises, body length less than 70cm and usually at an advanced
stage of decomposition. A similar phenomenon was observed last years but
this year stranding rate (actually July) was at the highest (7.2ind./km) on
the western Black Sea coast of Turkey, where we found more than 150
individuals (97% harbour porpoise, 91% neonate) on a 22 km coast. In June
the stranding rate was also high but not too much as to call it mass
stranding (1 ind./km).

In 2003 and 2009 unusual mass mortality (Tonay et al. 2012) and high neonate
mortality was reported presumably as a secondary effect of bottom gillnet
turbot fishery in summers (Öztürk et al. 2012). Because of the death of
lactating and nursing mothers in turbot nets, neonates might starve to death
and get stranded ashore in this season. But this year and last year's events
seem different.

We are working to understand the reason for this mortality. Does anybody
have any experience similar, with many newborn or juveniles dead (almost no
adult animals)? There can be various scenarios, such as disease, acoustic
trauma, biotoxins, bycatch, suppression of immune system due to chemical
pollution.

Please send us directly your comments or your observation of these
strandings: Ayaka Amaha Ozturk (ayakam...@gmail.com) and Arda M. Tonay
(to...@istanbul.edu.tr).

Mesoplodon mirus, from the Mediterranean coast of Turkey during multiple
strandings in June 2016. Journal of Black Sea/Mediterranean Environment.
22(2): 194-199.

Abstract

Three strandings of beaked whales (Ziphiidae) were observed and reported
along the Mediterranean coast of Turkey in June 2016. The first specimen
(male, body length: 526 cm) was live stranding in Gökova Gulf on 3 June. The
second specimen (male, body length: 510 cm) found stranded on Seferihisar on
the Aegean Sea coast on 5 June. The third specimen (male, body length:
472+cm) was found on Yakacık, Gazipaşa on 20 June. They all had two teeth
exposed at the tip of the lower jaw. The mouth line and the slender shape of
the body are distinct from the Cuvier's beaked whale, Ziphius cavirostris,
which is a common species in the Mediterranean. The preliminary
identification of the species based on the external morphology is True's
beaked whale, Mesoplodon mirus True, 1913 which is the new record for the
Mediterranean Sea, at least for the first two specimens. The genetic
information, however, is strongly needed for the confirmation of this
species identification. The reason for these strandings was not prominent
but the military activities which took place in the eastern
Mediterranean-Aegean region may have some relations.

Abstract

The stomach contents of an adult Mediterranean Monk Seal (Monachus monachus)
found stranded on the Turkish eastern Mediterranean coast near Antalya in
May 2013 were analysed. In total, 69 individual food items were counted and
nine taxa were identified to species or family level. Of the identified
taxa, Sparidae was the most highly represented family of prey fish, and one
cephalopod species, Octopus vulgaris, was found. Ariosoma balearicum and
Argyrosomus regius were encountered for the first time in the diet of a Monk
Seal in the Mediterranean. Several body parts (three heads, six forelimbs,
neck bones and fractured upper forelimb bones) of Green Turtles (Chelonia
mydas) were also identified, which is the first record of this species in
the Monk Seal's diet.

[MARMAM] New publication on population genetics of harbour porpoise in Turkish waters

2016-03-19 Thread Arda M. Tonay

http://dx.doi.org/10.3109/24701394.2016.1155118

Abstract

Genetic population structure of geographically isolated endangered Black Sea
harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena relicta) is little known in Turkish waters,
especially in the Turkish Straits System (TSS- Marmara Sea, Bosphorus and
Dardanelles), which connects the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea. Mitochondrial
DNA sequences of 70 new individuals sampled in the Turkish Black Sea, TSS and
Aegean Sea, revealed five new haplotypes from the Black Sea. The findings
support the idea that harbor porpoises from the Black Sea dispersed into the
Aegean through the TSS. Considering signatures of population expansion, all
subpopulations showed a signature of population expansion. The network data and
the ɸst calculations indicated that the Marmara Sea subpopulation was
significantly differentiated from all of the other subpopulations, and supports
the notion of its isolated. The finding of a potential management unit (MU)
within an already heavily impacted subpopulation as a whole suggests that the
individuals of P. p. relicta inhabiting the Marmara Sea require a very rigorous
conservation strategy to ensure the survival of this subpopulation, represented
by its unique haplotype.

[MARMAM] New publication on cetacean by-catch in the turbot fishery on the Turkish Western Black Sea Coast

2016-02-02 Thread Arda M. Tonay
Dear All,

Apologies for cross posting.

I would like to inform you that the new paper on estimates of cetacean
by-catch in the turbot fishery on the Turkish Western Black Sea Coast has
been published in the Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the
United Kingdom.

The pdf copy is available online via the following link.

Tonay, A.M. 2016. Estimates of cetacean by-catch in the turbot fishery on
the Turkish Western Black Sea Coast in 2007 and 2008. Journal of the Marine
Biological Association of the United Kingdom. doi: 10.1017/S002531541660

 <http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/S002531541660>
http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/S002531541660

Abstract

This is the first study estimating cetacean by-catch in the Turkish western
Black Sea turbot fishery. One turbot fishing boat was observed during two
fishing seasons, from April through July 2007 and April through
mid-September 2008. During this time, 24 harbour porpoises and one
bottlenose dolphin were caught in turbot trammel nets. The by-catch rate was
found to be 0.18 for harbour porpoise and 0.01 for bottlenose dolphin
individuals per kilometre in 2007, and 0.19 for harbour porpoise individuals
in 2008. It is estimated that the total numbers of harbour porpoises killed
in the Turkish western Black Sea during the legal fishing period (April and
July) were 167 ± 153 (CV: 0.92) in 2007 and 329 ± 220 (CV: 0.67) in 2008,
and the number killed during both legal and illegal periods of turbot
fishing were 2011 ± 742 (CV: 0.37) in 2007 and 2294 ± 806 (CV: 0.35) in
2008. The estimated range of harbour porpoise by-catch in the turbot fishery
on the Turkish western Black Sea coast is between these two estimates. The
by-caught harbour porpoises were between 1-8 years of age. About half of
them were within the age range of 4 (26%) and 5 (21%) years old, and 78%
were physically immature individuals. Turbot fishing carried out with bottom
nets, especially in May and June, when turbot fishing is banned, is a threat
to the sustainability of harbour porpoise stocks.

remarkable ones, as they accounted for 70.45% of the total number of fishes.
Onychoteuthis banksii, on the other hand, was the only cephalopod species
found in all stomach content analyses and represented 38.06% of the total
number of cephalopods. Bony fish species: Myctophum punctatum, Notoscopelus
elongatus, Electrona risso, Sudis hyalina, Moridae sp., Phycidae sp.,
Sternoptychidae sp. and cephalopods: Pterygioteuthis giardi and Chtenopteryx
sicula were reported the first time in the stomach contents of striped
dolphin in the Mediterranean Sea.

Abstract

The Mediterranean monk seal, Monachus monachus (Hermann, 1779) is one of the
most endangered mammals in the world. On 15 August 2013, an adult female
monk seal was found stranded on the coast of Antalya, Turkey. Previously on
6 July 2013, this seal stranded alive in Historic Alanya Shipyard. Gross
necropsy was carried out. The seal was emaciated and were nematodes,
cestodes and trematodes found in the gastrointestinal tract. Macroscopic
findings indicated that hypovolemic shock resulted in death because of
internal bleeding which occurred by verminous intoxication or systemic
infection. This paper summarizes the preliminary findings of the gross
necropsy

Abstract

Cetacean sighting data were collected on a research cruise carried out in
autumn season

(27.10-02.11.2007) in the western Black Sea between Istanbul (Turkey) and
Constanta (Romania)

and vice versa. This research cruise was conducted with a 32-m research
vessel R/V YUNUS-S in

the international waters. Average speed of the vessel was 10 nautical
miles/h. At each sighting of

cetaceans, species, numbers of animals, location (coordinates), time,
behaviour of animals were recorded.

During the survey, totally 417 nm was covered and 33 h of effort was made.
The aim of the

preliminary study was understanding the size and distribution of dolphin
population in the western

Black Sea. During the study, totally 16 sightings (91 individuals) of three
species; common dolphin

(Delphinus delphis), bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and harbour
porpoise (Phocoena

phocoena) were recorded. Number of individuals and number of sightings are
61 common dolphins

in eight, 29 bottlenose dolphin in seven, and a harbour porpoise in one
observation. The overall

encounter rate was 3.83 sightings/100nmiles. Common dolphin was the most
often observed species

(50%), followed by the bottlenose dolphin (44%), and harbour porpoise (6%).

[MARMAM] Mass mortality event in the western Black Sea coast of Turkey

2009-08-19 Thread Arda M. Tonay
Dear Colleagues,

Apologies to those of you who will receive duplicate emails due to
cross-posting.

Between mid July and early August, we had a series of cetacean strandings on
the 200 km-long Turkish western Black Sea coast. During this mass mortality
event, at least 114 cetaceans (harbour porpoises, bottlenose dolphins and
common dolphins) died and 8 common dolphins stranded alive separately.
Although many individuals were at the advanced stage of decomposition due to
heat and we could examine only a couple of fresh specimens, we suspect the
primary cause of deaths is virus infection. Laboratory work is in progress.

If you have heard or seen similar event in the Black Sea, please let me
know. It will be helpful to exchange information.

Sincerely.
