For many years, your generous contributions to this annual event have helped our nonprofit organization offer the programs and resources we all find so useful. As announced in the preceding auction reminder, we're delighted to note that all proceeds from this event will fund conference scholarships, which the MCN Board instituted for the Pasadena conference using 2005 auction income. [MCN-L] Fwd: Re: CAL SIG Accepts the MCN Silent Auction 2006 Challenge!
Calling all CAL SIG members, Margaret and Diana, CAL SIG Co-Chairs, have entrusted me to organize a CAL SIG "basket" for the silent auction and take the SIG-contribution-challenge Diane threw out there this morning. As a VRA SoCal Chapter basket veteran, I believe I'm qualified to take on this task! Ideas, items, and contributions of any sort are most welcome. Here are a few items popular in the past: art, jewelry, kitsch, clothing, stationary, food, wine, books, music, and DVDs, usually made in, set in, or about CA (but this is not a requirement). Although clearly we have to include some CA microbrew to keep up with the IP SIG! The sky is the limit and so let your creative juices flow since this will greatly benefit the MCN organization and its members. If you are interested in donating something characteristically California to this auction entry, please contact me at maburns at uci.edu or 949-UCI-8027. Once I have some idea of the scale of the largesse, I can make a more informed decision about whether it will be in a basket, a tote, a suitcase, or whatever! Please just give me a general idea of what you are bringing to help me to figure the container out. I live in SoCal, but will be staying at the Westin (to avoid traffic!) and attending the entire conference, so you can leave me messages and connect with me there without too much trouble. We will have to have it altogether by midday on Friday, I assume, but you can always bring it or catch me after the session I'm co-chairing with Trudy Levy from 1:30-3:00 Friday, Trying to Tame the Many-Headed DAM, as a last-ditch effort (after all Pasadena is a shoppers paradise!). Thank you in advance for your consideration and assistance. Looking forward to seeing you soon. [MCN-L] JPEG to be replaced by Windows Media Photo?
Not to step on anyones toes, but speaking strictly from a storage point of view, we spent 25K dollars for a 11.2TB RAID system (before formating), including 3 year support & service contract, spare parts kit and management software. To mirror an EMC backup and archival solution, another 20K would probably do, with no annual maintenance fees. I don't think this new format will have a noticeable impact on storage in professional applications, since it's designed to replace jpg and jpg2000, not TIFF and the raw camera formats (which are 80-99% of the storage problem, and closer to the high end of that for professional situations). It's more about squeezing a few more pics onto your 2GB SD card with that 10 Megapixel Prosumer-level digicam. If Vista's built-in apps like to default to the new format, it's safe to say that it will get popular on a consumer level whether it's a good idea or not. But it's not likely to penetrate the professional market for a long time.
[MCN-L] Benchmarks in Collection Care Now Available on Collections Link Website
Apologies for cross-postings: MDA is delighted to announce that Benchmarks in Collection Care for Museums, Libraries and Archives is now available from the Collections Link website as an interactive database. Benchmarks in Collection Care is a self-assessment checklist to help collections holders evaluate how well they are caring for their collections, to give an indication of where and what improvements might be needed, and to provide a practical framework for measuring improvement. Peter Winsor, Collections Link Project Director, commented, 'The publication of Benchmarks in Collection Care is one of the most significant additions to Collections Link since the service was launched earlier this year. The site is the only place where practitioners can find the original document, along with a simple Word version of the checklist and the interactive Access database version - making this a much more flexible, user-friendly resource.' The scheme uses three practice levels, Basic, Good and Best, to evaluate the quality of practice in nine broad categories, including storage, conservation, environmental monitoring and control, and emergency preparedness. Benchmarks is simple to use by institutions of any size. Possible reasons for completing an assessment include: * To develop a forward plan * As preparatory work for an application for a development grant * To make a case for additional resources from a governing body * As part of an application to MLA for Designated Collection status Benchmarks in Collection Care is one of a range of resources added to the Collections Link service in recent months, alongside the new Accreditation Resource Directory and the Standards in Museum Care of Collections series. [MCN-L] Three weeks until MCN Silent Auction 2006!
Rob and fellow MCN'ers, Our VRA colleagues have a unique way of getting some really good items into their auction: their regional groups put together "packets" or "baskets" of things from their region -- local foods, museum gear, goofy items, etc. Some of these baskets have been really wonderful, creative combinations and the competition for them has been fierce. SInce ideas can be appropriated without violating any IP laws, and with full credit given to our creative VRA colleagues, I offer the following gentle suggestion: maybe MCN's various SIGs and regional groups could put together group contributions? How about some wine from the California SIG? Salmon from the Pacific Northwest SIG? Shamrocks (or maybe Guinness) from UK/Ireland SIG? Panic buttons from the IT SIG? [MCN-L] JPEG to be replaced by Windows Media Photo?
We've been working with the wdp file format (Windows Media Photo) for some months now. Think of it as comparable to jpeg2000 in terms of file size and compression behaviour. Compression at very high settings is probably superior to jp2 files and especially in edge areas of high contrast. It will be natively supported by Vista and XP next year, but the licensing side still concerns me. I think MSFT is starting to get open source but I have bad memories of stuff like this... Compression tools are non-existant at the moment but coming soon. wdp files are also the format that the forthcoming XPS document format uses. = Michael Stocking Managing Director Armadillo Systems 87 Lancaster Road London W11 1QQ +44 (0)20 7229 0754 michael at armadillosystems.com On 17 Oct 2006, at 07:19, Amalyah Keshet wrote: > Unlikely. [MCN-L] Three weeks until MCN Silent Auction 2006!
Hello again, everyone: MCN's Pasadena conference is drawing closer, and so is our Silent Auction. The 2006 auction will be held at the reception on Friday, November 10th--three weeks from this Friday! All earnings from the 2006 auction will fund scholarships for MCN 2007. It's never too soon dream up novel (or truly excessive...) donations and stash them away to carry to Pasadena, where donations will be gratefully accepted in person. Items of any sort--new or old, seriously useful or happily useless--that may be attractive to bidders and carried by airline passengers are encouraged. Exhibition catalogs are always popular. Equally great are museum bags, clothing, and other souvenirs. Donations need not be tangible things--some popular lots have offered free services or special half-price registration for professional events. I'd say "think outside the box," but in fact there is no box! Donations may be dropped off at the conference desk when you register. Auction volunteers also are needed. If you'd like to help, please email me off-list at . http://www.mcn.edu/conferences/index.asp?subkey=1233 has more details regarding the Friday reception and a wide range of other MCN 2006 conference events. [MCN-L] JPEG to be replaced by Windows Media Photo?
How compatible is it with various software packages? Have you run into any problems? Personally, I am rabidly anti-Vista (due to various "protections" built into the software. In this current political climate, I'm turning into something of a technological Luddite...), so one of my concerns would be with how the file format interacts with older versions of Windows (or "non-standard" OSes like Linux, or even Apple's). Not to mention the licensing... Perian Sully Collection Database and Records Administrator Judah L.
