[MCN-L] CAL SIG Meeting at MCN 2007 Chicago

2007-11-01 Thread Kendrick, Margaret
Hello, all -

Around this time next week, we look forward to seeing many of you at our
annual CAL SIG Meeting. For those of you attending MCN 2007 in Chicago,
please note the following on your calendars:

*CAL SIG Meeting at MCN 2007 Chicago*

Thursday, November 8th

12 noon

Meet at the Conference Registration Desk (not at The Bull's Head as may
be listed in the printed program)

By that time, your co-chairs will have scouted out lunch options for the
group!

Last year's meeting in Pasadena was very productive. *Maureen Burns*
offered to host the CAL SIG local meeting and was the driving force
behind organizing a wonderful and thought-provoking day on the theme of
the connections between art and science. Anyone who attended will never
forget exploring DinoQuest, listening to Walt Scacchi's presentation, or
getting to know the ALAVs. *Marla Misunas, MCN President and CAL SIG
Founder,* picked up and ran with one of the ideas from our brainstorming
session for conference presentations. Don't miss her panel on Wednesday,
November 7th at 9:15-10:45 titled *Museum Studies Programs: That Was
Then, This Is Now.*

See you in Chicago,

Margaret Kendrick, Northern California CAL SIG Chair

Diana Folsom, Southern California CAL SIG Chair

[MCN-L] CAL SIG: Notes from our November meeting in Pasadena

2007-01-22 Thread Kendrick, Margaret
Greetings, CAL SIG -

Proposals for MCN 2007 Conference sessions or workshops will be accepted
from February 5th through March 2nd, so I'm finally sending out notes
from our meeting at the 2006 Conference where we came up with a number
of great ideas.

If this makes sense, let Margaret know if you are interested in working
with MCN colleagues on any of the ideas we brainstormed. She can collect
these responses and somehow connect people who are interested in the
same topic. Margaret's email is mkendrick at sfmoma.org. Of course, please
don't hesitate to come up with your own proposals!

For our between-conferences meeting in SoCal, Diana Folsom reports there
is an opportunity to pair our meeting with a meeting of SoCal museum
educators. Any thoughts on this idea? Please reply to Diana at
folsom at lacma.org.

Best regards,

MCN CAL SIG Annual Conference Meeting

Friday, November 10, 2006

Pasadena, California

We had a great turn out and a lively informal discussion of ideas for
sessions at the next conference as well as ways we can support each
other between meetings.

SESSION IDEAS:

--History of collections management systems and next steps in their
development

--Managing technology initiatives in house - how to get buy-in from
administration and co-workers

--Museum studies programs - integrating preparation for technology and
mentoring by established information technology professionals

--More sessions on the use of technology for education - what about a
presentation by SFMOMA IET team or staff working on CALISPHERE?

--Pros/cons re: where technology resides within the organizational
structure of museums

--For small museums, ways to maximize collections management systems to
further the educational mission of the institution

--More on integrating collections management systems and digital asset
management systems, for example where does CMS end and DAMS begin?

--Poster session - Ask the expert - sponsored by CAL SIG?

SUPPORT IDEAS:

--Where can we go to locate resources on complex issues such as image
management? A basic list on the MCN website?

--In the Members Only section of the MCN website would it be possible to
list members willing to mentor MCN colleagues?

--What about a CAL SIG blog? Perian Sully to contact Rob Lancefield, MCN
SIG liaison.

NEXT MEETING:

--The next CAL SIG meeting takes place in Southern California.

--Diana Folsom, Southern California CAL SIG Co-Chair, will take the lead
in organizing our annual meeting that takes place between conferences.

--Please contact her if you are interested in hosting the meeting at
your institution, if you would like to help organize the meeting, or if
you have suggestions for presentations and/or behind-the-scenes tours.

[MCN-L] CAL SIG Conference Meeting Announcement

2006-11-06 Thread Kendrick, Margaret
Greetings,

Our CAL SIG meeting in Pasadena will be Friday from 4:30-5:30 - just
before the buses leave for the reception at the Autry. We'll gather at
the Conference Registration Desk and adjourn to the hotel bar, the
Living Room Lobby Bar.

Let's brainstorm ideas for this year's annual meeting in Southern
California as well as conference proposals for MCN 2007. We can also
explore further ways to keep in touch between meetings - an idea that
came up at our June meeting at the de Young.

Subject: Re: [MCN-L] Attachment settings...

Richard et al (cc'ed folks, any opinions on the question below?),

I've just tweaked two Mailman settings:

1. View subscriber list is now set to private (admin only)

2. Content filtering now also denies .zip, .vcf, .sit, .hqx

Here's a question re: filtering. My strong preference is to kill all
attachments (even gif and jpg) and to dumb down HTML messages
automatically to plaintext before allowing their text content to
post, in a way transparent to senders (no annoying error messages).
This was what we decided to do before the site launch and thought
we'd done, but it turned out to be unimplementable. Mailman can do
this, but what do we think about the underlying policy question? Now
that we can, I believe we still should. It's standard practice on
virtually all lists I'm on (distinct from announce-only lists, where
traffic is much lighter and only emanates from one organazitional
sender), and is beneficial in ways I won't belabor. But does anyone
have a strong feeling and rationale in favor of *allowing* HTML, GIF,
JPEG etc.?

Not to open a can of worms--just don't want to be hastily unilateral.

If no one speaks up today for a change to a looser policy, Richard
(and I think you might?), I imagine a wildcard can strip all
attachments. I didn't see it in my quick dip into the admin interface
just now, but maybe you know? If not, and if we do stick to the
initial deny all, I can peruse Mailman docs.

thanks,
Rob

MCN: IMLS Study on the Use of Technology in Museums Libraries

2006-04-10 Thread Kendrick, Margaret
I came across this announcement in a recent edition of CAM (California
Association of Museums) e-news. Although the study was done in 2004, it
looks like it wasn't released until January 2006.
* * *

IMLS RELEASES STUDY ABOUT THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY IN MUSEUMS AND LIBRARIES

As part of the Institute of Museum and Library Service's (IMLS) mandate
to analyze needs and trends of museum and library services, they
recently released a 2004 survey on the use of technology and
digitization in the nation's libraries and museums.

In 2001, IMLS conducted the first-ever study of the status of new
technology adoption and digitization in the nation's museums and
libraries. This second study seeks to dig deeper and find out more about
how and why our cultural institutions use technology and digitize their
collections. It explores barriers as well as capacity and planning
issues.

To view the entire report or the key findings, see

MCN CAL SIG: Last minute call for proposals

2006-03-03 Thread Kendrick, Margaret
Greetings all CAL SIG members,

With the extended deadline for Conference Proposals we are hoping to
inspire some panels or workshops from our regional SIG in the MCN 2006
Conference Host State! The proposal deadline is now FRIDAY, MARCH 10th.

If you already have an idea, this is the moment to confer with your
colleagues, pull together an abstract, and submit a proposal.

In hopes of providing a bit of inspiration, following are a few ideas
from a brainstorming session at the CAL SIG Annual Meeting in Boston
last fall:
-Panel theme that connects with the entertainment industry, for example
what can we learn from edutainment?
-Steven Spielberg's Shoah Foundation and the project archiving
interview of Holocaust survivors
-Distance learning projects mentioned in connection with the Museum of
Television Radio

These ideas are just a place to start! For more information, refer to
the Call for Proposals
(http://www.mcn.edu/conferences/index.asp?subkey=714) on the MCN
website.

To submit a proposal, use the convenient online form
(http://www.mcn.edu/conferences/index.asp?subkey=906).

Let's make the 34th MCN Annual Conference the best ever!
