[MCN-L] VRA Core RDF Ontology Available for Review
VRA Core RDF Ontology Available for Review October 7, 2015 VRA Core http://vraweb.org/vra-core-rdf-ontology-available-for-review/ http://vraweb.org/author/vra-core/ A taskforce setup through the VRA Core Oversight Committee (Core OC)<http://vraweb.org/about/committees/vra-core-oversight/> has released an initial draft of a VRA Core RDF Ontology. The RDF Ontology is based on the Core 4.0 XML Schema and is available along with an XLST stylesheet that will convert VRA Core 4.0 compliant XML in RDF. Representing a VRA Core description in RDF allows for exposing rich VRA Core metadata as Linked Data, so that the descriptions may be widely shared and interact with other Linked Data resources on the Web, such as the ongoing project to release the Getty Vocabularies as linked open data<http://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabularies/lod/>. Together, these tools will allow museums, libraries and archives to increase exposure of their content online, allowing people to more easily find relevant images of cultural heritage objects, sites, and subjects. The Ontology, XSLT conversion stylesheet as well as example records can be found on GitHub at the following link https://github.com/mixterj/VRA-RDF-Project). The Ontology can be viewed here http://purl.org/vra/. Comments and questions are welcomed. Please feel free to submit them over the VRA Core listserv, which you can join at this link http://listserv.loc.gov/listarch/vracore.html, on the GitHub repo page or email them directly to Jeff Mixter (mixt...@oclc.org<mailto:mixt...@oclc.org>). [MCN-L] Visual Resources Association Presents 2010 DeLaurier Achievement Award to Baca and Harpring
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Visual Resources Association Presents 2010 Nancy DeLaurier Award to Murtha Baca and Patricia Harpring for Their Work on the Getty Vocabularies ATLANTA, Georgia (VRA) March 31, 2010 -- The Visual Resources Association (VRA), the international organization for image media professionals, proudly presented the 2010 Nancy DeLaurier Award to Murtha Baca and Patricia Harpring for their work on the Getty Vocabularies on March 18th at the 28th Annual VRA Conference. The Nancy DeLaurier Award, named for one of the pioneers of the Visual Resources profession, honors distinguished achievement in the field of image management. Achievement is measured by immediate impact and may take the form of published work, oral presentation, project management, software development, technology application, Web site creation, or other outstanding effort. Baca and Harpring's efforts encompass all of the above categories. Current VRA President, Maureen Burns, stated Letters of support for this nomination poured in from around the world showing the global reach of Murtha and Patricia's Herculean efforts and further demonstrating how the Getty Vocabularies are truly an unparalleled body of work. The impact of the Getty Vocabularies is enormous in the field of visual resources and beyond -- visionary in inception and instrumental to the quest of standardizing image cataloging across the cultural heritage community. Information professionals in visual resources collections, libraries, museums, and archives regularly use the Art and Architecture Thesaurus, the Union List of Artist Names, and the Thesaurus of Geographic Names, developed, sustained, and nurtured, primarily by these two individuals, under the auspices of the Getty Research Institute. The Getty Vocabularies not only provide uniform terminology to describe works of art, architecture, material culture, and other associated materials for metadata creation, but their use enhances access to online resources and the knowledge bases researchers rely upon. In addition to project development and management, Baca and Harpring have worked tirelessly to promote free global online access to these vocabulary tools, to translate them into many languages, and to assist colleagues in better understanding how to use them most effectively. Attesting to their ongoing vision of the future in terms of shared standards and best practices is their promotion of a new Cultural Object Name Authority (CONA) intended to provide authoritative work records about cultural objects overcoming linguistic, chronological, and other variations in naming. At the awards ceremony, Baca and Harpring announced their latest publication, Introduction to Controlled Vocabularies: Terminology for Art, Architecture, and Other Cultural Works. [MCN-L] Embark and Gallery Systems
Hi Chris, Sorry for the delayed response -- fortunately, I was far removed from email access (as we all should be from time to time). Please feel free to contact me directly. It would be useful to know a bit more about the intended use for the XML data. There are currently three means of generating XML from EmbARK. 1) Report writer - I have created a few report templates that allow you to save data in XML (including CDWA Lite). By using the report writer, you can take advantage of advanced scripting tools to embed considerable logic to finesse the output. 2) EmbARK Web Kiosk - EmbARK Web Kiosk 7 has customizable templates enabling the publication of any XML format (this is what Marla is using at SFMOMA). The XML may be harvested using SRU (Search and Retrieval by URL). You can load a URL at any time to access the data set you need (or configure that URL into an application that would harvest the data). 3) COBOAT - As Ben mentioned below, you can use COBOAT to automatically extract data from EmbARK and generate XML. COBOAT simply requires that you create an ODBC data source for EmbARK. The templates are quite customizable -- I have already configured them for CDWA Lite. The XML can be saved as text files or loaded to an OAI-PMH Server. Hope that is helpful. So as I understand it, currently there is not an automated way to export it. It has to be done manually? Is there the ability to create plug ins for the systems? -Chris -Original Message- From: mcn-l-bounces at mcn.edu [mailto:mcn-l-boun...@mcn.edu] On Behalf Of Ben Rubinstein Sent: Wednesday, July 29, 2009 8:07 AM To: Museum Computer Network Listserv Subject: Re: [MCN-L] Embark and Gallery Systems On 29/7/09 01:06, Chris Alexander wrote: I'm wondering if Embark or Gallery Systems has any way to export data as an XML feed. Does anyone know if this is possible? Thanks in advance. Possibly also worth noting that Robb Detlefs at Gallery Systems has been working to create an Embark configuration for the (freely available) software we created for the OCLC Museum Data Exchange project, which produces CDWA Lite XML exports - it can be configured to run automatically on a regular basis, and to send the data to a database or generate flat files. See http://www.oclc.org/programs/news/2009-04-10.htm for more information - and contact Robb for more info if it seems of interest (though I happen to know he's floating down a canal in England this week, and trust that means he's offline...).
