Stuey,

You'll get a pair of these 1/2 shafts at any of the larger U-Pull type
wreckers and from Sydney (Blacktown) they'll cost you $40 to $50 - check
the
Unis are good cause they're real exy to replace. There's a couple of good
U-Pulls in Brisbane and I'm sure there's likewise in Melbourne - I can't
recall where you live.

Terry

 Stuey,

 I have finally found a pic of a R180 diff in a 1600 - this diff doesn't
 have
side axles, the shafts just slide straight into the diff 240K/C210
Skyline
and 720's are like this but to do it on a 1600 you need 240K/C210 Skyline
 half shafts.

 Terry

damn i need a digi camera, yeah that is what i have, its a slide in
shaft which has a bolt hole thru centre, which u bolt the drive shaft
to, same as an r160, just i used that slide in bit on the r180, but
cause the 180 is a bigger diff that the 160, those 160 slide in spline
shaft is to short for the 180 diff.

You must have a real old style R180 diff as the 1/2 shafts don't bolt
  into a
R180 diff, they slide into the diff and there aint no plate. The
 exception
to the slide in shafts is what came on the 240Z which has a R180 that
 takes
the same shafts as a 1600/180B/200B with R160. What's in either side
of your R180 - there should be just 2 holes with a splined shaft
inside of them - the shafts fit up to it much like how a tailshaft
fits onto the back of a gearbox. If it aint got what I've described,
then ur got me on this one.

What are the shafts off that you intend to use with this R180 diff?

its not the shafts that i need, its what the shaft bolts to, the
plate on the diff, and they bolt into the diff, you know what i
  mean?? you have diff,

then plate, then shaft, then wheel flange plate...

RE: petrol filler needed

2004-08-18 Thread Justin Kinchington
I made one out of a R31 Skyline http://www.assuredit.com.au/datto/
relatively straight forward, it could easily be made to fit std 1600 tank,
before this when mine died I used 180B installed upside down and with the
metal pipe from 180B. (cheap alternative)

I've got a cracked rubber one too :(

I'm going to have a look around a wrecking yard to see if I can find a
better option from a later model car. If I find a suitable one I'll let
 you all know.

 Deane.

 the

may not present a gap. However I was not able to test it. I'll try it
tonight. If that doesn't work I'll have to try the capacitor trick.

 Thanks guys,
 Iggy

 Iggy,

Didn't read this before posting (obviously). You can use a EFI
 starting
relay with a Microtech ECU, and I think I've always done so with a
 1600
because of the problem with the ign switch. The Brumby switch is more
 than
likely not going to solve the problem either but then again, I've
 never
tried that one with EFI, they work a treat with Bluey electronic
 units. I
have seen a remote start button used with a 200B FJ conversion and
 that
seemed to work, can't recall what ECU was used on that one.

 It is a 1600.

I definately know that there is a gap when going from start to run and
 vice
versa. I have heard people use a capacitor and diode to take away that
 gap,
but this was on an ECU using an EFI relay. The Microtech does not
 require
 one.

I will try and pull apart the switch and see if I can clean that up
 or rig
something that way. Do we know of any donors for the switch? I heard
 Subaru
 Brumby?

 Thanks
 Iggy

You could always check the switch by pulling out the switch and
 joining
 the
wiring together and see if you get the power gap.
 Is it a 1600

 Hey all,

I'm currently wiring an LTX8s to my FJ20t. The problem I have found
 is
 this:

I need to get an ignition on feed for the ECU (obviously). When you
 go
 to
start, the power from ignition on cuts out. So what I have done is
 use
 the
wire that goes to the coil during starting (Black w/ blue tracer)
 and an
ignition on feed together. Problem is there is a noticeable gap
 going
 from
start to run. Do you guys have any suggestions on how to rectify
 this?
 What
have you guys with aftermarket ECU's (Microtech especially) done?
 Is it
 a
case of a too worn out switch?

 Thanks
 Iggy

RE: Wiring ECU

2004-06-09 Thread Justin Kinchington
Hi All,

I have been told that the n12 pulsar (model with electronic Ignition not the
ballast resistor) is a donor car and the whole switch key and all fit in the
same spot with the plastics. I cannot confirm this yet as I still use the
ignition switch loom from my front cut - very annoying especially if you
forget to put the key in an turn off the steering lock (have only done this
a few times :-). If you had a front cut you can plug the frontcut switch
straight into the 1600 harness and if everything else is right the car will
start.

 Hi All

With the introduction of the new Australian Antispam Laws I guess I better
make sure there are no members on the list that don't want to be
members

Probably the best way for me to do this is to delete everyone from the
list
and make all those who want to be members to resubscribe.

Sorry to be a pain in the butt... but it's the only way to make sure
 there is
no one on the list that shouldn't be there...

I will do this NOW - right after I send this email

I have just checked the Mailing List Web Page for subscribing and
unsubscribing and it's all working ok... so you will be able to
resubscribe
 via the following address:-
 http://www.ozdat.com/ozdatonline/listindex.html

Or you can use email commands if you know how...
(hint - send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the
word help on the first line of the message body)

Regards and thanks for you understanding

Large Rims 16 or 17 on 1600

2004-04-06 Thread Justin Kinchington
Hi Guys,

Can anyone advise me on what the drive is like in a 1600 with 16 or 17
mags fitted. Is the bump steer any worse or better, what width mags they
went with 6, 6.5, 7 etc, was there any inner guard scrub, what size tyre
you went with. Etc... I want to go bigger but don't want to spend money to
find out they don't fit.

Thanks,

RE: Control arms rubbing on disks....

2004-03-25 Thread Justin Kinchington

OK Stuey,

You have two options to fix this . and cutting/grinding the lower
control arm back is not fixing it.

1. replace your ball joints Yes they are no doubt worn a little. I
had same problem and mine were not that old. This time don't buy the
cheapest ball joints you can get find out which ones are the better quality.
2. Change you struts for say some of the ones I am using. Based on the R31
legs with adjustable spring platforms and twin spot callipers. Very nice
upgrade from 200b..Also Optional upgrade to 4 spot R32 callipers. -

Hope this helps.

but even takin all that off doesnt quite look as though it will be enough.
And then if i get new disks, it will be worse wont it, cause new disks will
encrotch on the control arm end again...

which are the strut/bump steer spacers, and what will replacing them do, if
they havent already been done
Um, the whiteline KIT as such doesnt exist anymore, some of the parts do,
fulcrum basically made up the same kit really, mainly using there own parts,
but i got the kings springs, koni adjust. front and rear, whiteline front
rear sways and front strut brace. New bushes and bumpstops throughout the
car. I find it unreal except for the fact im running ET pulsar turbo
mags??? with spacers with 195 60 16 tires on it, way to much roll in
tires, there too big for the rims, but still f%$#ing unreal setup i think,
also this is the first car i have ever had to handle good, ive always had
triton utes for work.

what do you mean by spring rates?? im not up on the technicals hey, sorry

Stuey,
I had the same problem, cuts some pretty serious groves in your discs!
I just took as much of the rib off as I needed to, and make sure you take
of
metal around the front and back of the rib slightly so there is clearance
when you turn. also sounds like strut/bump steer spacers might be another
fix.

What do you think of the whiteline package? and what kind of spring rates
are you using?

Hope this helps

Hi there listers. I have a problem which arose when i got my 1600's
suspension done. i got the handling kit from whiteline installed by
FULCRUM. I had it lowered to a height of 315mm at the front, 280mm at
the
rear, these are measured from centre of hub to the underside of guard.
I
am
running 200B struts with king springs and koni adjustables. What is
happening is that the lower control arms are now rubbing on the disks, i
have already cut out a section in the backing plate for the disks, and
ground a bit off the little strengthening rib around the bottom of the
arm.

I was lucky that i didnt go and get new disks straight up, still have
the
old disks that were on the struts when i got them from the wreckers,
they
are 11mm thick, close to illegal i presume.
I just cannot think of anyway i can fix the situation, have thought off
a
spacer between the ball joint and the bottom of the leg, but seems
dodgey,
it has me stuffed, i wanna fix it before i get some vented disks...
Does anyone have any ideas, like, surely a lot of people have used 200B
struts with an L20B motor conversion and had the car lowered..

I would agree on slight toe in for straight line directional stability,
parallel for really grippy rubber. Toe out starts to squeel on turns as
the ackerman angle goes further out of whack and it feels vague at
straight ahead.

Andrew.. Sounds excessive to me. We only run 1-2mm of toe out on
 the race car.

Just checked my workshop manual (Kenneth Ball), it recommends .3 Toe
 IN.

 Hope that helps.

  Hi guys,

I havent got my service manual on me - does anyone know the spec for

a 1600 front end toe alignment?

I quickly checked a wheel alignment done on my car with a tape
measure - its been set at roughly 5mm toe out total, or approx
0.3deg toe out per wheel. Any thoughts on if this is excessive??

  Thanks,

RE: CAnary

2004-03-14 Thread Justin Kinchington
Not sure of the rules in melb, But in QLD it is legal to go 1 size up on
the engine with out engineering certs etc. so if you have got a 180b then
is should be fine without all that other stuff. But if it were in a 1600
then you would need to compliance it. See the 1600 does not have boosted
brakes std but the 180b does I think. You should ring the transport dept
and ask them your self what the rules are.

Good luck,
Justin

Can anyone help me out with my problem. I got a canary

and
number plate light. I then went and took it to get a roadworthy and he
knocked me back on the engine being a 2litre
in
180b(beacause they were not standard in 180b he reckons i need a engineers
certificate) and a 200b brake system to
compensate for the engine upgrade. He also wanted me to hook up the emmision
control back on it(re-install EGR valve).

Does anyone know of automotive engineers that i can contact to talk about my
situation.Should i try getting it
roadworthy somewhere else. I was wanting to put it on CH plates soon when i
finaaly find a 1600 road car.

Any info whould be much appreciated

 Gday Terry,

Do you have any photos of the layout of surge tank and pumps etc you
use on the one self contained panel under the rear seat (from
 memory)?

 Andrew

  Chris,

Just by way of a little more explanation so you are clear as to what is
required for a reliable EFI fuel supply you run the 1/4 line from the
 fuel
tank via your LP pump to your surge tank. From the surge tank outlet you
 run
the 5/16 line to the HP pump and then onto to the filter then onto
the
fuel rail. The original 1/4 NA fuel line can then be used as the return
from the fuel rail to the surge tank or fuel tank (your choice and lots
of
debate about which is best), whichever you decide is best the surge tank
must have a fuel tank return as well and I think all 1600 tanks have
provision for a return line even though most of them didn't have one
 fitted
from the engine bay. My '70 has the return line my '72 didn't but it
did
have a rubber bung over the inlet as I think this is pretty common. Make
sure that you rubber fuel lines are designated for EFI use, and new
stuff
can be a bit exy but wrecked R31's have heaps of it in the engine bay
and
it's good quality stuff if you want a good cheaper solution. The R31 EFI
 HP
filter setup is also a very easy to fit to a 1600 as it uses flexible
hose
fittings and a bracket that bolts onto a strut tower - we've used it on
 many
turbo conversions and never had a problem with fuel supply.

  regards
  Terry

  Gday Chris,

The tank supply fitting is 1/4in, and return is 5/16in. If you look in
an
empty tank the supply fitting picks up from the bottom of the tank,
while
the return fitting is at a much higher level, so despite its smaller dia
I
used the original supply fitting into 5/16 pipe for my efi supply.

Brisbane Motorkhana

2003-07-21 Thread Justin Kinchington

Hi All,

General invite to the next round of motorkhana on the 3rd
August. Held by the Holden Sporting
Car Club Qld ( www.hsccq.asn.au ) However there are more Datsuns in
the club than Holdens. Will be held
at Queensland Raceway in the pits/ car park and is a great day out. I took my newly finished SR20 1600 out
last month and had a ball. Practice is from 9:30 11:00 and Event starts at 11:30. All Cars are welcome and it is a great
time to hoon about in your car with out getting harassed by the law (donuts
included). If you want more info
you can contact me on [EMAIL PROTECTED]
or on the list. I will be
organising a digital video camera for the day to catch some footage.

Thanks and hope to see many on the day.

Justin.

Tony,
Do you mean a FJ20DET, IRS, S12 Silvia is NZ$500 (I wish)
For that price I could afford to import it and get a 2.4L crank and piston
kit made up!!!

I have been following the NZ prices, but only Skyline turbos (including R31
GTS-R), GTi-R's and supercharged MR-2's

Where can I find more information online about parts and cheaper cars? (like
910SSS and S12 Silvia)

What are CA18DETs like as a street performance motor? They don't seen to

RE: Datsun 1600 Front Struts HELP !!

2002-04-23 Thread Justin Kinchington \(Global\)

Thanks
everybody for you help. Replacement ball joints have seen an end to all my
brake problems ( except for the nice little groves I have left in my newly
machined discs). If any one is curious I have them mounted to the
rear of the car like the 1600 ones, I don't know how to identify them but
the callipers have Nissan written on them and like I said if they are on toward
the front of the car the turning circle was reduced. Thanks again for all
your help and suggestions.

  I've
seen this a few times. There was a picture on the Adelaide website showing the
damage that can happen to a disc that had the backing plate removed which was
caused by a control arm and it's very destructive.

  It
usually occurs when you go from the longer71-72/1600 struts to
200B/240Kand on the problem car I sawthe balljoints were
totally shot. The static clearance between the backing plate and the control
arm is~1/8-3/16" and the clearance from the backing plate to the disc is
~3/16" - 1/4"so you can see how much movement the balljoints have to
have in them for contact to occur. If the play in the balljoints is bad enough
then the risk of getting rid of the backing plate is that the control arm will
just munch the disc and I wouldn't recommend that you do this. Some ppl with
lowered front ends have taken 1/8" off the end of the control arms and this
seems to have no detrimental effect.

  regards
  Terry

Jack your car up remove the whole strut from each side and swap sides.
You shold be right then.

also is there a list or can somebody tell me what other struts and caliper
combo's are available.
