Can someone explain how you check the wheel alignment with a tape measure

I would agree on slight toe in for straight line directional stability,
parallel for really grippy rubber.  Toe out starts to squeel on turns as
the ackerman angle goes further out of whack and it feels vague at
straight ahead.
