Yes, young man..

Any model, any year and quite frankly, I believe anywhere in the US!
As long as you are the owner of a Mercedes-Benz, just give them the
car's VIN.

Recently used it on my trip east. In West Memphis, called and got a
flatbed sent to take me to the local dealer to replace a failed
vacuum pump on my 1980 300SD..

No, the turbo increases the pressure of the charge, not the actual

So Hammie's starter is on its way out. Actually truth be told the solenoid
is on its way out but lets not quibble. When the engine and by relation
the starter itself is hot the solenoid won't engage, you turn the key and
get nada.
So I've got a week off coming up and I'm thinking thats a great time to
ship him off to my Indy since I'll be off to camp with the pickup truck.
Since I generally only go to and from work and 2 hours seems to be plenty
of time for a cool down I've just been watching where I park so just in
case I'll have somewhere to roll and get started (the wonder of the 4spd
manual). So today on my way home I had to get a present for my wife as
today is our anniversary.
Anyway this one place has a pretty good slope but as I was coasting my car
was like a magnet for people to jump out in front of and I found myself at
the bottom with no momentum.
So I was noodling around under the hood trying the screwdriver trick and
found there was no way I could get the screwdriver across both contacts at
the same time, ARRRGGHHH!
Then this pretty young woman pulls up in an old Suzuki and asked me if I
needed help, she seemed interested so I explained the situation. She
suggested we push (240D remember) the car up the hill again...
I really don't know how we managed it, she's not a big girl and I'm not in
any kind of shape. Anyway we get to the top with my lungs on fire. I told
her to get in, gave her the scoop on what we're doing and we'll go. The
look on her face was priceless... My logic is that I'm big so maybe I'll
be able to get the car moving faster quicker. Whatever, it worked, Hammie
started and she didn't steal him. I tried to give her ten bucks, she
EARNED it but she wouldn't take it.

People with Honda's that never break down never get to have pretty girls
push their car up a hill to get it started...

there was no way I could get the screwdriver across both contacts at the same
time, ARRRGGHHH!
Then this pretty young woman pulls up in an old Suzuki and asked me if I needed
help, she seemed interested so I explained the situation. She suggested we push
(240D remember) the car up the hill again...
I really don't know how we managed it, she's not a big girl and I'm not in any
kind of shape. Anyway we get to the top with my lungs on fire. I told her to
get in, gave her the scoop on what we're doing and we'll go. The look on her
face was priceless... My logic is that I'm big so maybe I'll be able to get the
car moving faster quicker. Whatever, it worked, Hammie started and she didn't
steal him. I tried to give her ten bucks, she EARNED it but she wouldn't take
it.

People with Honda's that never break down never get to have pretty girls push
their car up a hill to get it started...

[MBZ] Glass

2005-09-30 Thread RELNGSON
<>>

Windshield damage is directly related to how much debris is on the roads one
drives on. In my area, the freeways are not very clean and traffic is heavy
and fast, much of the time. And so my car's original glass had a couple of
small
stars and a lot of sandblasting. And, since I had not put in a windshield
claim in nearly four years I decided it was time. Cost me my $100 deductible.
So
far, the PPG glass is in pretty good shape but I do admit that I avoid
following large trucks too closely and try to get by them quickly.

As to "classics" and collector cars, I include my own W203 on the list of
"no, it isn't."

[MBZ] Sensor in Injection Pump '90 300D

2005-09-30 Thread John Peterson
I've been trying to diagnose a loss in boost in my '90 300D. I brought it
to the indie who found that (1) a vacuum tranducer is out and (2) he thinks
a sensor on the injection pump is giving no electronic signal to the ECU.
He says a 2k injection pump is necessary.

Is there any more economical way of changing this sensor? Rebuilt IP?
Seems hard to believe it would be so buried inside that it can't be replaced
if necessary.

The steering damper is easier than the drag link to replace, though IIRC
the drag line should not be difficult for DIY.

Rust on the nuts and threads holding the drag link could cause problems.
You could avoid that by taking the drag link and steering damper to an
alignment shop when you are having an alignment done.

Steering dampener reduces play; replacement of a worn dampener results in
noticeably less "active" or "twitchy" steering. Well worth the $50 bucks and
VERY easy to replace (I know because I did it twice under minimal

[MBZ] battery age

2005-09-30 Thread John M McIntosh
In the 92 300TDt I've a nice "new" looking monster battery, a 100Ah
varta, the same as in the other two cars, except those ones are new
because I bought them last year.

Earlier this week as I'm out starting it up, and thumping the seat
heaters on and watching them flash to indicate low voltage I'm really
wondering
how old is that battery in the wagon? So I looked around, nada a
clue, but there is a serial number burned into the plastic,

so on the varta-automotive.de site found an email link:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Via that I asked, and wonder of wonders got a reply in a few hours
and was told the battery was made in 1998.

Which means it could be upwards of 7 years old.

I have heard lately of batteries pushing 7-8+ years, but me thinks
I'll wander down to my dealer and replace it this week. My wife has
twice experienced battery failure on the highway in our former 89
300TE would not like to encounter any more of those... Or so I have
been TOLD...

The steering shock reduces wear on some steering parts by reducing

It was rather amusing though.

Most people around here pull off to the side of the road to change a flat or
call CAA, cars whipping by at 70 MPH. In the big cities you don't stop for
anything if you can still move or you're toast.

Any car can stop or brake down for any reason and I find more new cars
abandoned on the side of the road than anything else, but I do see the odd
old beater too. Not always that safe on the side of the road - most people
won't stop for you unless it's a 2 lane highway.

We had a cop killed near here when she pulled a car over on the 401 near
Chatham Ont. Someone ran right over her standing beside the car.
Definitely a dangerous job, but that was just stupid.

Re: [MBZ] Compression ratio

The ratio is not possible to change, its a fixed amount. The ratio 22:1
means that when the piston is at the bottom of the stroke it moves up
and compresses that amount of "space" into the "1" so to speak. Its
determined by the stroke.

[MBZ] Sources for engines?

2005-09-30 Thread Craig McCluskey
My brother has a 300CD with a 617.912 and writes,

I am starting to look around for sources for a replacement engine for
our Benz or having the current engine rebuilt. Is there anything I
should watch out for? The engine is a 5 cylinder non turbo diesel.
   Thanks for your assistance.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Craig

[MBZ] Stability Control?

2005-09-30 Thread dave walton
The 99 E-Class came standard with traction control (except 4-matic)
and shows "Stability Control" as an option on the E300 and E320.
Anyone know how to tell if a car has the Stability Control option by
looking at it?

Thanks

Re: [MBZ] Compression ratio

2005-09-30 Thread Steve MacSween
Marshall already answered, but to take it from another angle, the function
of the turbo on a gas or diesel car is to increase the volume of air being
inhaled by the motor during the intake stroke... with a greater volume of
air you can increase the amount of fuel being injected, thus producing a
more powerful combustion reaction and more horsepower from the same
displacement.

Turbodiesel engines are actually more efficient than 'straight' diesels, and
(assuming all is well with the component parts involved) burn cleaner.

However, the compression ratio does not change with the change in the
'charge air' being forced into the combustion chamber. All engines have
different volumes of air in the chamber, at different points in the
intake/combustion/exhaust cycles.

The compression ratio of the engine is unrelated to the turbo. The turbo
increases the air charge pressure as required. The piston than compress
that by about 22 times!

Re: [MBZ] Click Click Click

2005-09-30 Thread Dave M.
Up until earlier this year, the 15W-50 was the easiest to locate, and
relatively cheap ($19 for the 5qt jug at Wal-Mart). The 5W-40
(Delvac-1) was pretty much only available from distributors, in gallon
jugs, for $24+.

Then, Mobil totally changed their marketing scheme and also released a
number of new formulas. Now, the 15W-50 is only available as 'Extended
Performance', now $24 (approx) for the 5qt jug. And, they released the
5W-40 both in quarts AND in a 5qt jug for $20.

IMNSHO, the 5W-40 is superior AND cheaper - no reason to buy the
15W-50 anymore (which used to at least be cheaper, but not superior.)

[MBZ] steering shock and center drag link

2005-09-30 Thread dieselbenz24
Hello All,

While getting my recent state inspection the guy said that I needed a new
steering shock and center drag link. Do these commonly wear out with a car of
this age ? The steering shock sounds more like a comfort item and the car
seems to drive fine.

They want $100 for center drag link and $50 for steering shock.

Any insight would be appreciated,

Here in Upstate NY (Delhi), gas has finally come down to $3.15/gallon from
a high of around $3.40. The next town over is down to about $2.87, and that

company's gas stations can amount to a difference of almost $.30.

I am SO glad I picked up that 300TE for my wife to drive instead of our

she would drive the 300SD.

know whether it is original, I assume it is, since it has the star.

PPG makes replacement windshield WITH a star on them for Mercedes and
they make them without the star for the glass replacement industry. They
do NOT have different production lines for them. The difference IS the
star - not the quality of the windshield. As far as I know, PPG did not
supply the German factory with windshields for installation into cars as
original equipment (but that might not be true). Any glass can pit. The
OE glass in German cars pits faster than what's available in the
replacement market in the US, but replacement glass WILL pit - it just
takes more effort. One good sand storm is all it takes!

My insurance will not replace the windshield for cosmetic reasons, but
only after it won't pass state inspection. That's a subjective call by
the inspector.

2005-09-30 Thread ANGELO GIAIMO
RLE Writes:

PPG has been one of the factory suppliers but my '01 C320's glass is all
Pilkington. And, when it's pitted windshield was replaced this year (paid
for
willing by my insurance), the new one is a PPG. And, it's not quite like
the
original in that the mask is painted on the inside surface instead of
between the
two. Which means that my Valentine 1's suction cups won't stick to it,
necessitating mounting it a bit farther to the right. At the top.

All this excitement about OE puzzles me since none of these cars are or
will
ever be collector's items anyway and windshields are a maintenance item
which
need to be changed every few years for safety's sake. Angelo's reasoning is

spot on. Looking through a new glass makes you wonder why you waited so
long to
change it.

On the other hand, if you are cheaper than Ebenezer
Scrooge...

RLE
===
So, the Pilkington windshield had to be replaced in ~4 years due to pitting
and the PPG is not like the OE either? Is it holding up any better?

And yah, I know, it's no collector's item or classicjust a diesel

Re: [MBZ] 1977 450SEL Update

2005-09-30 Thread Tom Hargrave
Dave,

Yes, you can see the damage with the valve covers removed. One or more cam
lobe will be scored and in extreme cases, the lobe will be rounded off. In
addition, the associated cam follower will be damaged because they fail
together.

The root cause is an issue with the plastic oil spray bar mounts. They
disntegrate over time and when they do, most of the oil leaks past them &
the cam lobes starve for oil.

Thanks,

Re: [MBZ] acetone in fuel to increase mpg? anyone heard of this?

2005-09-30 Thread Chris
There was a discussion of this on the biofuels list (JTF) and some people
did some careful testing. The final conclusion was that it doesn't work.
(Good initial results were attributed to more careful driving during the
initial phase of the experiments.) To read all the test results you can

If the cam was worn bad enough to cause a miss you would have a hell of
a ticking sound I would think.

my wife drives. I will admit that was not always the case, particularly
with my Alfa GTV [European model which got 45 mpg at 85 mph] when I was a
punk kid. Old age and being force-fed a Chevy once cured me. Cured [read

Still hoping to discover the Safe [for the mechanicals of my 81 300SD]and

Fuse for gauges -- check to see if the temp gauge and fuel gauge work
(this happened to me while driving, scared me half to death!).

Also, idle the engine and check to see if there is oil running onto the
cam through the oil filler cap -- if not STOP ENGINE -- you are either
out of oil or the pump chain is broken.

If so, it's the gauge or wire.
