[MBZ] Fw: NBB to Open Washington, DC, Office
FYI... Werner - Original Message - From: National Biodiesel Board [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, February 03, 2006 2:01 PM Subject: NBB to Open Washington, DC, Office National Biodiesel Board to Open Washington, DC, Office Industry Organization Announces Governmental Affairs Team The National Biodiesel Board (NBB) announced today it will be opening an office in Washington, DC, starting March 1, 2006. The office will focus on federal regulatory and legislative issues impacting the biodiesel industry. In addition to opening its Washington, DC, based governmental affairs office, the industry’s nonprofit coordinating organization is proud to announce Scott Hughes has been promoted from Regulatory Director to Director of Governmental Affairs. As Director of Governmental Affairs, Hughes will have management responsibility for NBB’s state and federal regulatory and legislative programs. Hughes will be 100 percent dedicated to biodiesel legislative issues and coordination, while other members of the team will be partially dedicated to biodiesel issues and specialize in their respective areas. The biodiesel industry has achieved tremendous success from the extraordinary policy leadership of the American Soybean Association (ASA). NBB will continue to fully support its very strong partnership with ASA. NBB’s new governmental affairs team is structured to supplement the ongoing work with ASA and to even more effectively coordinate the overall legislative effort. The NBB federal governmental affairs team has a wealth of industry knowledge and Washington-based governmental affairs experience. It is well prepared to represent the interests and needs of the biodiesel industry. The federal governmental affairs team is: Scott Hughes (Director of Governmental Affairs) – Hughes brings over 15 years of governmental affairs, public service, and political experience to the position, including having worked on Capitol Hill. In addition, Hughes has worked for NBB for the past three and a half years in regulatory affairs. “Scott is very knowledgeable about biodiesel and the dynamics of the industry,” said Joe Jobe, CEO of NBB. “He has demonstrated tremendous talent and effectiveness as NBB Regulatory Director and is uniquely suited to immediately step into this expanded role to head up our Washington, DC, office.” Hughes’s current state regulatory role will be served by contractors yet to be named. Gordley and Associates – Gordley and Associates is a Washington, DC, based government relations firm specializing in legislation and regulatory policies affecting agriculture and related industries. Gordley and Associates has a successful, long-standing relationship with ASA, NBB and the biodiesel industry. Gordley Associates has been at the center of biodiesel policy efforts since NBB’s beginning. • John Gordley, founder, has extensive experience working in both the legislative and executive branches of government. Gordley’s areas of expertise include farm policy, agricultural trade policy and biotechnology. He has played a major role in every national farm bill since 1981. This experience will be invaluable as agriculture policy incorporates several programs critical to the biodiesel industry. • Mark Palmer has served as the primary federal contact for the biodiesel industry over the last two years. Palmer has extensive Hill experience and a renewable fuel policy background. Palmer was the point person for the industry in its successful efforts to pass the volumetric biodiesel fuels tax credit in 2004. • Janet Kopenhaver (Eye on Washington) - Kopenhaver has over twenty years experience in the governmental relations field. Kopenhaver has been serving as the Federal Regulatory Consultant to NBB for over two years. In this capacity, she closely monitors federal agency proposed regulations and grant programs for their impact on the biodiesel industry. Alan Weber (MARC-IV) - Weber is a founding partner of MARC-IV, a consulting company that specializes in the development of industrial products from agricultural resources. Weber has been associated with NBB and the biodiesel industry for over 10 years. He specializes in advising NBB on economic technical activities. Weber has significant experience in federal regulatory affairs and has played a central role in every major federal initiative proposed by NBB. He will serve as a transition team member moving to Washington for approximately one year to help ensure the successful launch of the new Biodiesel Governmental Affairs Team. Tim Urban (Washington Council Ernst Young) – Urban is a partner with Washington Council Ernst Young. Urban’s areas of expertise include tax and budget. Urban has been advising the biodiesel regulatory team since the beginning of the campaign for the biodiesel tax credit in

Levi Smith wrote: I remember seeing some article about dual-wheels in general at some point. Nothing particular to Mercedes that I recall. Seems they were more or less something like twin motorcycle wheels in place of a single car wheel. The benefits being better traction in water, probably some others... When I first read about it in Popular Science, the idea was attributed to an engineer whose Lotus Esprit got outrun by a 2CV in the rain. The obvious answer was to put it on skinny tires, but if he did that, it would handle like a 2CV in the dry, so he used eight of them on special wheels. Goodyear later refined the idea into the Aquatred.

Re: [MBZ] How I found this Group
Aww. Nice to hear all of ya waxing eloquent as you recount your introduction to Benzes. It inspires me to re-post this little tale that I posted a few weeks back. - snip - ... reminds me of the way a certain exceedingly anal and superior woman customer at the service station I used to work at used to tell us to fill up her 124. In some sort of southern-ish accent it was always Feel it with Dezel. Man, she was so bent on making sure we knew she was above us in society. Duh. That job actually was my first exposure to Mercedes diesels. We used to call them rabid mobies only because of the foamy nature of diesel. And we could always hear them coming before we saw them, owing to what I now know as the klatta klatta. They almost invariably came into full serve. Didn't get too nervous around these luxury autos after a while. I remember some unfortunate new employee, however, who left the nozzle in a guy's Jaguar, allowing him to pull away. OOOPS. Ah, memories. Now I'm a rabid mobiler. Our very strong interest in fuel mileage, and a show on PBS about a lady here in Minn. running WVO in her Mercedes Diesel sparked our exploration of what it might take to get one of these autos. Increasingly dependent on the internet (though I fought it for a long time), I did a search for the topic, and the link to MBZ.org was the first I looked at. It did a great job at giving me a feel for what's up with owning one of them, and how surprisingly inexpensive a used one can be (despite what some folks try to charge - there is such a gap in the selling prices!) Hi Joe, I actually don't have much help to offer (rather new myself) but your post just reminds me of where I was not long ago. We wish you the best in finding that 240 you desire. I found that looking on AutoTrader.com and the like quite useless (most are overpriced, some seemed real shady - a lot of dealers - and none near my home). Quite often, listers will post ads that they have found. A lot of them look nice, but I never did see one anywhere near my area. I wound up finding mine through my brother who spotted it while out on a walk. Just wanted to say best of luck. Re: [MBZ] what IS the diesel noise?
I had the impression that there WAS no combustion front in a diesel in the sense that there is in a spark ignition engine... rather, all the fuel combusts simultaneously as it is sprayed into the hot air in the prechamber or cylinder at the top of the compression stroke. Always assumed THIS was the characteristic diesel noise---a sharper, louder sound when combustion takes place throughout the cylinder in one event, rather than being spread over a small but significant period of time. Alex Chamberlain '87 300D Turbo On 2/3/06, Peter Frederick [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The noise is a combination of things, starting with a supersonic shock wave at the combustion front. Fixed timing engines also suffer from excessively early injection at idle, contributing to the noise in the same way spark knock does. The high speed swirl in the prechamber breaks up the shock wave, resulting in both better combustion and less noise -- alas, it also reduces efficiency somewhat. Noisy Benz engines are usually as Marshall describes -- some carbon on the nozzle will disrupt the spray pattern enough at idle, when very little fuel is injected, enough to make it burn all at once rather than smoothly. Sticky nozzles result in late or early injection (depending on when it sticks, open or closed), again, clank. Diesels cannot detonate, the fuel has to be all present at once for detonation to occur. [MBZ] 240 d
Three years ago I bought a 1977 300D from a guy in Maine who had it for less han six months. When I had test drove it I had never, never driven any Mercedes anywhere new or old in my life. I fell in love with it and bought it. A few reasons made me look. I had a little extra cash that year. I figured steam ships and trains went to diesel. My mechanic said man you drive so much you should get a diesel car, but only a Mercedes diesel I just purchased a 1979 240D with low mileage so it continues. By the way I have never had either to an authorized Mercedes Benz dealership. Much I do myself and with trusted mechanics. If speed is you thing get a Porsche. If a steady safe ride on the highway is your thing these cars are built for that. They are slow up hills but faster than riding a bike so that is good news. Sometimes people get impatient when it takes a few minutes to come up to highway speed. Craig's list is a good source. Monkey adds, BigLot, Cars.com. Autotrader (look for private owner listings), eBay but it is a sellers market is another source. Remember if looking for low mileage, extreme claims of low mileage require extreme proof (maintence records showing dates and mileage/review title look for descrepancies), otherwise assume an odometer has been changed out. Installed a new from Rusty belt tensioner on my SDL last week. Seemed ok for a day or 2 now I notice its rattling around REAL bad again, like a really worn out one does. Belt also squeeks a little. Did I get a bad on or do I need to look for something else?? If I pry against it while running it quiets down. I tried unhooking the bolt for the upper leaver where the spring goes and pryed that back a little while engine was running and that didnt seem to make a difference. Re: [MBZ] did I get a bad belt tensioner?
nevermind, I figured out the problem. The big washer thats supposed to go between the tensioner and the block was missing. I could have sworn I installed it but its nowhere to be found. Had to find another big washer and grind the hole out a little so it would fit around the bold of the tensioner. Fixing to put it back together but that should do it. Peter T. [MBZ] O/T Metropolitan Engine
Well, to tell the truth Rusty let me down. I need crankshaft Kit for my Metropolitan and he has not had a special on one. My car was one of the first 1,000. It has an early A-40 engine. Next week I go to Cleveland to pick-up an engine that came out of a running car about 3 years ago. It is not stuck. I'm planning on a few ounces of Marvel Mystery oil in each cylinder, turn over by hand to free up rings if required. I'll do this for several days. I'll do a compression test {engine out of car) to judge them. I know that I should be dropping a M/B 2.4L diesel in this but I'd have to convert it to floor shift. The sales literature for the car assures the prospective owner that the column shift is much safer. The major competition at the time was VW! Thanks for any input. -- Regards, Peter T. Kleb, Double check the spring and shock. The spring can break inside its rubber sleeve and result in too little tension. Bob DuPuy On 2/4/06, Kaleb C. I have, Yes, with the exception that I couldn't connect it to the center tube to the fuel distributor - not enough room, so I connected it to the other end of the tube. Having spare pieces of fuel tubing now (extra engine parts and pieces) will make it much easier to use. On 2/4/06, Kaleb C. Striplin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: So who has used this thing? Re: [MBZ] 240D - Auto Trans Control Rod
Hi Tom, One thing about the '79 240D - unless you have a manual trans you may have the early style of AT control rod. There's a rod that runs from the IP to the passenger side of the AT. There should be a plastic bushing in the rod to remove any play. If the bushing is missing or damaged the AT will *not* shift properly. It will upshift *way* too early and performance will be poor. Also, it won;t downshift when it should again, causing poor performance. Even the downshift button under the accelerator pedal will not work properly. Trouble is, the bushing is not shown on the parts diagrams. I finally found the part number thru MB Classic - let me know if you (or anyone) needs the number. You local MB dealer can get one easily for $2 - $2.50. Later cars use vacuum to control shifting. Re: [MBZ] what IS the diesel noise?
Craig McCluskey wrote: I had heard the opposite: that combustion in gasoline engines was rapid and that combustion in diesel engines was slower. The slower combustion, over much of the piston's downward travel, was what was supposed to give diesels the higher characteristic torque. I believe the higher torque and higher noise both come from higher cylinder pressures, which is also the reason why diesel engines weigh more.

Belt also squeeks a little. Did I get a bad on or do I need to look for something else?? If I pry against it while running it quiets down. I tried unhooking the bolt for the upper leaver where the spring goes and pryed that back a little while engine was running and that didnt seem to make a difference. This sucker is really loud, I thought I have a bad motor mount but prying on the tensioner makes the noise go away. Its mounted tight to the block, I figured it might have loosened up but no, its tight. A perfect tensioner will make a racket if the shock or shock bushings are bad, if the idler or idler bearing is bad or if one of the belt driven accessories is binding. Of course the tensioner fastening screw can come loose, the timing cover threads can strip or the tensioner bearings can fail. I've had ALL of those happen in just 7 different OM60x engines (with only a little more than a total of a million miles on them). Re: [MBZ] 116 YMCA deal!
Thanks Jim, I've had a 115, a 123, a 124, and a bunch of 126s, but I've always steered clear of the older S class cars. When a friend called to say he'd seen an old benz at the Y for $300. I figured I'd get it for one of my kids. It turned out to be so nice though, I'll keep it for myself. Of course, I'm such a cheap old bastard I had to offer less than they were asking. It is a good thing I got it too, the SDL just manifested either a blown head gasket or the infamous #14 head problem. I'm sure it was out of jealousy of me paying attention to another S class.
