2006-02-08 Thread Peter Frederick
Buy the stuff from Rusty or Mercedesshop Fastlane -- unless you get
fuel line that small, everything else I've heard of being used leaks.

You need to replace all of them -- make sure you get ALL the old stuff
off (it gets brittle and chunks stick to the nipples, then slice the
new hose...). It lasts three or four years for us.

Remove by gasping one side with a pair of needle nosed pliers and
pinching it off the nipple -- have a care not to scratch the nipple,
else it leaks forever afterwards. To install, use the needle nosed
pliers to grasp the tubing far enough up that you can get it all the
way down on the nipple and push it on completely.

Valves need to be checked every 15kmi (I checked them every fall, before
really cold weather). They need to be checked COLD (engine not run for
6-8 hours) and for your engine, intake valve clearance is 0.1 mm (0.15
if temps could drop below zero F) and exhaust valves should have 0.35 mm
clearance. When checking the valves, chain stretch needs to be measured.
If chain stretch exceeds about 5-6 degrees, the chain needs to be
replaced to correct valve and injection pump timing (it's unlikely to
snap before stretch reaches 8-10 degrees).

Twice a week will keep you well enough informed but 15,000mi is the
recommendation. in .004 out .014 no more than 5 degrees stretch.
The engine has a tensioner that mysteriously keeps things right all by

[MBZ] Fix for squishy W124 seats

2006-02-08 Thread Dave M.
Hi all,

After getting my E500, I noticed those seats were a LOT more firm and
supportive than my 1987 seats, which were downright flabby by
comparison. I had thought the springs were getting weak or something.
Then, I found this gem in the WIS:

http://www.w124performance.com/docs/mb/W124/seat_booster.pdf

I picked up two of those foam blocks, and installed them yesterday.
WOW, what a difference! It feels like brand-new seats. The good news
is, you don't have to fully disassemble the seats to insert the
blocks. The bad news is, you probably do need to remove the seats from
the car. This takes about 10-15 minutes if you've done it before and
are familiar with the general procedure. Prying the leather or Tex out
of the metal seat frame is a pain, and getting it fully re-seated (uh,
pun not intended) is even more of a nuisance. But, it was definitely
worth the twenty bucks for the blocks. I'm going to do the passenger
seat next. These apparently were not used for the 1986-89 model years,
but were phased in for 1990-up W124's, and maybe some late build 1989
models. It's easy to tell if you have them, the seats are soft
squishy up front, and you can put your fingers underneath and feel if
there is a foam block there or not. Photos of the installation are
below.

Good sleuthing wrt the clashing VINs. It IS a '78, as it has the Type II
push button ACC module.

It may have a dash cover or replacement dashboard since the dash is suppose=
d
to match the interior color. On the plus side, it seems to have amazingly
little rust and the opera window louvers don't appear to be peeling.
Negatives: I could live without the wheel arch chrome. Also, brown is
probably the most unattractive color for this model IMHO. I much prefer
silver blue, maroon, teal, or any shade of green (except pea soup).

Given the clashing VINs, unless there are records from day one the mileage
must be regarded as a complete unknown.

That car has definitely had some paint work done to it. You can see where
they masked off the VIN plate on the door (as well as the other info
labels), and where they sanded (or stripped) the VIN plate on the radiator
hose.

There is also some peeling by the radiator VIN plate, as well as on the body
above the firewall.

[MBZ] Hey Johnny B. RE: Amsoil

2006-02-08 Thread Curt Raymond
Johnny B,
What weight of Amsoil are you running in your cars? I drove all around last
weekend looking for Mobil 1 5w40 for my 190D and had zero luck. Every place I
went to carried it but none actually HAD any. A guy at one Wal-Mart told me
they sell out quick.
Whats extra irritating is a couple weeks ago I was at Wal-Mart and they had a
bunch but I didn't get any. That'll teach me.

Anyway I'm considering Amsoil and so checking out their site. I'm thinking
the XL 10w40 or AFL 5w40. The XL is cheaper, a bit cheaper than Mobil 1 even
although shipping will probably fix that.

I'd be interested to hear from you and any other Amsoil folks that are around.

Re: [MBZ] Hey Johnny B. RE: Amsoil

2006-02-08 Thread Gary Thompson
I've searched every Walmart in town for Mobil1 5W40 as well. I'm
starting to get desparate as I REALLY need to do an oil change, but
only have 1 jug of 15W50 left.

Two Walmarts still have a label on the shelf, but didn't have any in
stock. Guy at one of those told me he hadn't been able to get it. He
also mentioned that it looked like the extended performance versions
were going away as well. No loss there.

Three other Walmarts don't even have shelf space for it any more. Had
the auto manager at one store this morning tell me he wasn't going to
stock it at all. Said it hadn't been very popular. When I pointed out
that the shelves were always empty, he didn't have a good answer.

I may be forced to find an alternative or a different source. :^(

The book is written by a marketing man (same line of work as me) and

what it means to people, etc. Sounds very interesting!

Pretty sure it's just in German. But German is quite similar to English and
you can figure some of it out. What would be really helpful would be a
German-English English-German car vocab lexicon.

[MBZ] the rattling belt tensioner on the SDL

2006-02-08 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Well I figured out why the tensioner was rattling on the SDL even after
replacing it. The AC compressor was about to fall off!!! Tightened the
bolts back up and 75% of the rattle is gone. Still a little belt
squeel, think the belt may be worn and causing the rest of the rattle,
or maybe the spring is weak. Took the spring loose from the top like I
did last time and pryed it back, this time it caused the rattle to go
away completely. So, its either the spring or the belt, will probably
just replace both.

not warped like mine),
sunvisors (plain, ie no mirrors, if possible)
the clips that hold the inboard ends of said clips
  and an electric seat switch.
Color doesn't matter, I can paint stuff to match what I have now, the panel
around the shifter (not sure if auto and stick are the same panel, can't be
that different I wouldn't think. Auto would be much less likely to be warped
though. The one on my car barely stays in place because the corners are lifted
so badly.) I plan to paint black anyway, thats what my '81 300TD had and I
liked it better.

Mine has a light tan interior. I'm not sure what its called... My 240D's
interior is considerably darker...

Can you weld? The springs are probably broken, but I've had
good luck welding/brazing splints of sheet metal around the
breaks. (Direct welding is worthless because you'll wreck
the temper of the spring.)

From the manual it looks like the fresh air doors under the hood
aren't opening, explaining why I have full heat all the time.

Only a symptom, not a cause. The heater valve being on is what gives
you full heat all the time. Unless you only have full heat when there
should be _any_ heat.

[MBZ] 190D Lunch experience

2006-02-08 Thread Curt Raymond
So I took a look at the manual (thanks Marshall!) and at lunch I went out and
took a look at my car. Learned a couple things;
  1. One of the connectors on the PB was disconnected.
  2. One screw below the vent won't do its job because the plastic around it is
broke, needs a washer.
  3. The stereo install was a kludge at best. The rear speakers don't work and
I think its because they aren't wired... Of course now it'd be a hassle to
figure out which wires are the rear speakers (unless somebody knows) so I may
just run a couple...

So maybe that connector will save the day. We'll see on my commute tonight.

I know it is a little early to be asking about this, but thought I'd
avoid the spring rush and ask now.

I'm resurrecting the AC on a 1990 560SEC and the owner wants to convert
to R-134 (I know, I know...) We've got everything installed, replaced,
flushed, and ready to charge, except for one small bit of info: What
pressure should I be seeing on the low side when the system is fully
charged? I'd rather use my real gauges to check this and not just rely
on the cheap gauge with plastic fittings reading in the green area.
This is my first time charging a 134 ssytem.

Thanks,
Tom

My wife is loving the 190D. She says its way more powerfull than the 240D.
I find it more peppy but not crazy powerful, its the same HP rating after all.
I HAVE to do something about the seats, the drivers side seat is all squashed
out on the left side, it feels like my left butt cheek is taking the low road
while the right is taking the high road. I don't have any money to rebuild
seats right now so I think I'll get seatcovers and stuff some padding in there
to compensate. This spring I'll have both seats rebuild. The passenger's seat
is totally squashed out, at least its squashed flat, you could just sit on a
pillow and be more comfortable...

I still haven't figured out how to get the shifter boot down good. If its hooked to the base the panel comes up out of the console because its warped and doesn't hold itself in well. If I have time I may see if I can glue a stiffener to the bottom of it.

From the manual it looks like the fresh air doors under the hood aren't opening, explaining why I have full heat all the time. could be of course that the PB is bad... Gonna have to take a look at the doors to see whats happening.

Got an appointment this weekend with the guy who is buying my 240D, we're going to change the oil in both cars (provided I can find some Mobil 1) and maybe the brake fluid too. He's got a garage (heaven!) so it shouldn't be a big job.

What size wrench is it for the bleeders? I presume I should use a tube from the bleeder down to a cannister to catch the old fluid, what size should the tube be?

  Thanks all

  -Curt

The 190D 2.2 is MUCH faster than a 240D and considerably more economical
too.

You will have full heat in a 201 if there is no vacuum to the heater
valve. If there is no electrical power to the vacuum manifold, there
will also be full heat and a damaged feedback potentiometer can result
in FULL heat.

An unbroken seat bottom (driver and passenger's side can be exchanged)
is the best solution. The shifter boot attaches all around the edge if
the console shifter cover hasn't been damaged.

I believe I've encountered 7, 8 and 9 mm bleeder screws. At least one of
my cars has different sized screws on different calipers.

Re: [MBZ] Converting to R-134

2006-02-08 Thread Trampas
The low side pressure will be about the same as R12, the high side will be a
bit higher.

The expansion will regulate the pressure based on evap temperature. Thus it
will reduce or increase low side pressure as needed.

When converting, don't they take about 80% of the R12 charge?
