The person I bought the 85 190D five speed from used to drive from Port
Orchard to SeaTac. With any of the 190Ds he had, it was WAY cheaper than
the ferry. He since moved, but even with diesel at these prices, it probably

I'm actually curious to see a reference for that. I know passenger rail
gets big subsidies but I don't know much about freight rail. I do know
the railroads have to maintain their own right-of-way, while trucks and
barges get the government to do it for them. ;)

Not to mention that there are "donor states" that get fewer $ back than
they give to the government in tax money. I always figured the reason
our roads were so bad in MI is that we were a donor state. A good chunk
of our road tax money was going to build bridges to nowhere in Alaska.
Ted Stevens may not know much about the Internet, but he knows how to
reel in free money for his state. Meanwhile his own citizens get the
lowest tax rate in the country, not to mention the oil money checks from
the government.

Braindead Island is not inexpensive. Silverdale is no worse than
Bremerton, just has a better PR person. All these places need a ferry
to get to the big town, unless you want to drive around. The silly
boats run on a schedule that does not support too much more than
commuting. If you want to make a night of it at the Opera, best to
book a room in town, so that you can enjoy the show, have something
nice to eat after, then play with your favored wench in the morning

Clay,

Usually the seal goes bad because the water pump bearing has begun to fail.
Grab hold of the fan blades and give them a wiggle in a direction not
constrained by the V-belt. If you can see the pump shaft move, failure is
imminent
and you drive with the risk that physical damage to the radiator may occur,
as well as any overheating created problems. Cast iron heads are not immune
to cracking under overheating conditions, ask a man that has one for
available for a boat anchor.

Regards, and keep your ears open.

I think so. It's the thing that gets the signal from the
compressor's RPM sensor. It's worth at least cleaning the
contacts on the one you do have. You could consider a
resolder job on its guts too.

Hey, I see there has been lots more input on this topic. Thanks guys. For
the laughs and the learning.

That is, in fact, what I've heard from my wife's friends who grew up there -
that it just sort of spits a lot.

And yes, it is pretty much nasty here (MN) 10 mo. of the year as one of you
said. We are getting into potentially the hottest summer on record. I'd
rather have my 112 and dry that I grew up with.

As for the job in WA, it could have us looking at Bainbridge Island or
Silverdale. Bremmerton is a less nice area, no?

How inconvenient/expensive is it to catch the ferry across to Seattle for a
night out, or a trip to Trader Joe's, etc.? I would probably ride my bicycle
to catch the ferry and tool around the city.

Quite efficent!

My sheepskins are starting to smell like wet sheepdog skins

Bob.

It is possible that the smell you are attributing to the sheep skins is
actually coming from the Air Conditioner. Only this time of the year, in
Phoenix, does the AC make enough condensate to activate the moldy smell
from the

evaporator.

Go ahead and clean the sheepskins, but you may have to treat your
evaporator

coil with a heavy shot of Lysol spray.

Bob,

I had some Rams Head sheep skins that lasted 18 years. When they needed
cleaning, I ran them in the washing machne,on gentle, with Woolite, just

said in the manufacturers instructions. The last time I washed them they
shed
real bad and they basically disintegrated, but I think I got my money out

them!

When they come out of the machine, you will see that they have shriveled
some, but if you dry them slowly on some towels, they can be stretched
back out.

Then take a cat brush or equal to them to lift the knap.

The sad thing is that they are "elected" officials. This means that a
majority of the populace wants these crooks in office. Remember, our
founding fathers warned us about a democratic system of government (The

Well, it might activate the actuators, but the fluid doesn't actually
circulate much. It won't hurt, certainly. You never know when you
might need the ABS! I used mine last weekend to avoid an accident (the
tires were moaning if not sliding).

Flushing will change all the fluid, not just the fluid in the lines.

Not really. It's what's going on _inside_ the unit that matters, and
for that nothing beats a full set of gauges and thermometers.

Wonder why is there no glass sight on the home units like in car ac

The short answer is because they don't leak. A slightly longer (and
different) answer is that a sight glass is only useful with certain
refrigerants, in conjunction with the system's design.

Good question-previously it was internal regulator. Symptom is dash
warning light comes on and stays on. Also electrical smell. I used to
change my own but can't really do that now. In the days of generators,
used to change brushes along side of the road or even early alternators
had replaceable diodes. It is not the bearings- no bearing noise-my old
Indy went out of business-I need to see if I think this guy is doing all
the diagnostics he can and not just part changing since they are on a
one year warranty. He has checked grounds, battery, etc. I will give him
one more chance on this-if this alternator fails, I may have to switch
to OEM from Rusty or try one of his remans. Two alternators ago, the
one was bad right out of the box. He sent it back and got another one-so
I guess that makes 4 in about 18 months. I was wondering if other
brands of remans are available for the 240D.

What exactly went wrong with the alternator? Were all failures similar?

The brushes and regulator are an easily replaceable unit that I've
changed from below with the car on its wheels (not jacked), is that what
failed?

Belt tension is important; too lose and you won't charge, too tight and
it will ruin the alternator bearings.

The Bosch reman I got from Rusty still works fine. I did have a problem
where a burr on the pulley ate belts until I discovered the cause
(operator error while swapping the pulley to the reman alternator).

replaced on the Green Goddess.. This is the third one in a little over a
year. I know Curt Raymond that problem with his 240D and Bosch reman
alternators before he sold it. Anyone else have any experience with
these?

This is the second Indy to work on it-can't find any 'cause'. When I ask
about cause I get what the Car Talk guys call 'the mechanic's shrug. I
have two specific questions:

Has there been a run of bad reman Bosch alternators?
Any problems with the electrical system that could be frying the
alternators? Thanks. Dwight

Go ahead and clean the sheepskins, but you may have to treat your evaporator

Re: [MBZ] Need advice on buying AC pump & gauge set

2006-07-13 Thread OK Don

If one were to use a single gauge set to check both R-12 and R-134a
cars, would it be safest to check the R-134a first, then the R-12?

This reminds me, I have a set of sheepskins for a 124 (I don't know if
the seats are different on a 126, but they were on my 124). They are in
VERY nice shape except one small spot where the driver's thigh would
rest on the seat (it is worn a little thin in this one spot). I have
no idea what they would be worth. I will see if I can get pictures.
Anyone interested?

compressor shouldn't be allowed to operate--correct? Anyone know

low pressure switch and/or relay reside on an '84 300D?

Should be right on the receiver/drier.

There is a 6.0 cfm, 2-stage Robinair, $240 at thetoolwarehouse.net.
They also have gauge sets from $65 to $130.

Am I fishing to shallow?

Looks OK. Pawn shop price for both around here would be $150
on a good day.

Re: [MBZ] Added remote doorlocks to the S124

2006-07-13 Thread Jim Cathey
recall, I had a choice of tapping into the hatch, passenger, or
drivers door
signal. I went with passenger door, and the only bad thing is that if
you
use the keyless entry to lock it, you will set the alarm off if you
manually

unlock from the passenger door. No big deal if you know not to do it.

This is why you do _not_ use either front door wire to do the
installation! The trunk/hatch wire _also_ arms/disarms the
factory alarm system. The doors, because they can be unlocked
from the inside, have extra switches to do this. Go back and
move your goodies to the yellow wire.

Has anyone successfully wired in an electric vacuum pump (a la
126/201/124)

with the specific intent to install remote locks? [in 123]

No, you just need to add one regular motorized actuator to the
existing vacuum system and all will be well. Cheaper than
converting, and _much_ easier.

Re: [MBZ] cummins, frod, GM

2006-07-13 Thread Jim Cathey

On the 24V Dodge Cummins models (98.5+ to common-rail whenever that was)
consider it mandatory to install a fuel pressure gauge or idiot light.
Treat it like the engine oil pressure gauge.

Of the four I know the owners of, _all_ of them have eaten the injection
pump (to the tune of $2000-$3000) when either the lift pump failed or
the fuel filter clogged due to a load of bad fuel. Otherwise, they're
fine engines.

Re: [MBZ] Primer pump now leaks .

2006-07-13 Thread Jim Cathey
It is not leaking in the locked position, I only observed it leaking
when I
tried to purge the air in the main fuel filter. I have never run the
engine

with the pump not 'closed'

There are two seals, the one that would be problematic, as opposed
to a bit messy, is the one that seals the handle when it's screwed
down. It can in fact be replaced with the pump off the car, but you
probably have to make your own. Easy, I've done it with a 3/4" hole
punch, scissors, and a sheet of BUNA rubber.

I think the pumping seal can leak quite a bit before it will no longer
prime the car adequately. Though it is of course unappealing to have
diesel dribbling all over the place. The other seal leaking air is
the one that could strand you, IMHO.

Any suggestions on why it won't take a charge?

Bad fitting depressure. (Had that a time or two.) Also, compressor
doesn't suck too well at idle, might need to rev a bit.

Re: [MBZ] OM60X low-oil circuit board

2006-07-13 Thread Jim Cathey

What does the pin connection look? Would it be easier to put a PIC on a
different board in that location?

That'd be easiest as a sell-em-a-replacement item, but I think you
could easily deadbug a PIC onto the existing board for the ultimate
in low-cost repairs. The board has four stake pins sticking out of
the side, something like I--I-I--I in pattern along the edge.
