Cummins introduced a program about 2-3 years ago for big rig diesels that
introduces a certain ammount of crankcase oil into the fuel system. The

service leave the bags on the side porch if we weren't home. The airline
claims that the bags were dropped off on our side porch between 1 AM and 3
AM the next day (1/2), but they still aren't here! The airline tells us
that we agreed to this, and someone must have stolen them between 3 and 7
AM so they are not at fault. Our neighbor was sleeping in her living room
and heard nothing - and the local police department says there was no
activity that night and they haven't heard of a scam regarding crooks who
follow lost baggage couriers. You would think they would have telephoned
us, rung the doorbell, or left a sticker to let us know they were here.

Has anyone ever experienced this before? I am convinced the courier
service
is lying or left the luggage at the wrong house because we live on a quiet
street with low crime (yes, this is possible in D.C.). The description of
the drop off provided by the courier was so general that we cannot be
certain they actually came to the correct address, or that if they did,
they
didn't steal the bags anyway. There are five (5) complaints of
non-delivery
against this courier for the same day from others who have not received
their bags. Any ideas on how I should proceed would be appreciated.

He claims that the bags were in the back of the truck when he
left the airport but not when he got to their house. Probably
flying down the highway and the wind sucked them out of the
pickup.

It looks like you have brought our attention a real problem.
If you allow them to not place the bags in your hands, then
you give them free rein to claim they delivered the bags when
the never did. Short of suing them and putting the driver on

other victims to step forward, I don't have any good suggestion.

Re: [MBZ] rear exhaust hanger question

2007-01-04 Thread OK Don

The genuine hangers for my (old) cars from the stealer have never
lasted more than two years. Maybe I'm the only one buying them, and
they all date from the year the car was made. I'm talking about 115,
123, and 107 cars, with 1981 being the most recent. YMMV.

Simply get the correct part for your specific car! The proper hangers
should easily last 10+ years unless you do a lot of off-roading. Some
(but hardly all) aftermarket rubber hangers are of very poor quality and
I've seen some fail within months. That has not happened to ME with
genuine Mercedes hangers (that are correct for the application and model
car).

Re: [MBZ] NO GLOW exhaust hangers

2007-01-04 Thread OK Don

Actually, you can argue with the meter in the under 1 ohm range - dirt
on the glow plug post could easily account for an extra 0.3 ohms.
Unless you have a very high quality meter and probes and very clean
connection points, I'd consider the under 1 ohm readings as ball
park. As Jim said, you need to measure current to be sure. What to
do? I replace all of them at once - and save those that might be good
for emergencies, since I don't keep new ones in stock like I do oil
and fuel filters.

 Although the latter
was replaced within the last 12 months, I can't argue with the meter!

Andrew - you are partly correct. At the last Starfest, and several
Tri-O-Rama events I've been to, the Concours is done first, with the track
events on succeeding days. However, cleaning up the car after driving to
the event itself is a multi-hour affair, usually with hoses and buckets
supplied by the event hotel.
At SF06, in some cases the cars were cleaned up after driving the 2 week
route 66 trip, rainy days and dry, and then the jaunt up to Las Vegas. Some
of us also got to wash and polish the cars in Chicago after driving from
North Jersey.
The SD garnered a second (1 point off first) at SF. But it got really muddy
on the way back East, while driving through snow and rain on dirt roads in
Colorado. It was cleaned up properly when we got back to NJ, after almost
7800 miles (out and back)!

The idea of pumping used motor oil (that is sufficiently contaminated to

On top of that, motor oil burns hotter than diesel fuel so outside the
range that the engine was optimized for. Conventional motor oil burns a
bit more smoothly than Mobil 1! I've been told that the companies that
make the furnaces that burn used motor oil have recommended NOT using

No, those are all simple counters. I think the correct type of counter
has one-shots to determine when it should stop counting pulses (during
the dead times) to frame off the digits, and the multiple, possibly
multi-digit, codes. I still think it's something that a laptop, or

[MBZ] stuck piston ring

Okay guys for those of you with 1992-1995 S-Class cars when your car goes
into limp mode get it fixed, don't do what the previous owned of this car
did and drive it with 6 of 12 cylinders working for any length of time.
Tends to create a s***l*** of problems.

Because of this inattention to detail I believe I have a stuck oil ring on
number 2 piston. Dave Walton was over a few weeks ago and didn't think it
was injector nailing and we both agreed that the exhaust needs tightening
up. Aside from pulling the motor and repairing it anybody have any
suggestions on what chemical works the best for removing the built up
carbon/scafootz on the ring(s) from properly working? I thought the GM
product TOP engine cleaner would be my best bet but I wanted to check with
the list first.

For reference: http://www.greenmediaonline.com/uploads/shoptalk/0508_st.asp

The procedural steps I would use would be to drain the oil and remove the
oil filter, remove spark plugs and fill each cylinder with x amount of
cleaner, hand crank it over a little and let it sit overnight. Drain the oil
pan then remove the pan to see what is in there ie: particulate matter.
Motor uses 1 qt of M1 15w50/100miles. Before I have valve stem seals done I
thought I'd try this. This is a V12 gas motor. Runs strong with ALL kinds of
power. Just burns/uses oil and has a noise in there.

Will also look at replacing both EGR valves and cleaning the EGR tubes.

And to make it more interesting my back was operated on to remove the cancer
and am relearning how to walk.

Sorry Kaleb not for sale.

Re: [MBZ] Trying out 0Wxx Mobil 1

2007-01-04 Thread Curt Raymond

Just catching up on my emails, I managed to get myself a case of food poisoning
on a business trip to NYC day before yesterday. I'm still a little queasy but
rapidly improving.

Anyway, the starter didn't go any slower it just wouldn't spin for as long with
the weaker battery. At -10F you need alot of spinning. IIRC you're supposed to
let it crank for up to 1 minute.
One time I had a couple glowplugs out on the 240D, the GP light didn't come on
at all. It'd start down to about 30F but it took alot of cranking to get it to
go and when it did there'd be a big cloud of smoke.
Remember this, when you decide to start your car START it. None of this
pussyfooting around. If its really cold let it glow for 2 full cycles (I
haven't found any advantage in more than that) hold the accelerator to the
floor and CRANK UNTIL IT STARTS or the battery is dead.
If you stop cranking early you're screwed it'll be double hard to start after
that. In that case with my car it was time to get out the strap and fire up the
pickup truck for a drag around the block.

My 190D starts much more easily in the cold. I got it because staring the 240D
was wearing on me. Then we bought the house so now I have somewhere to plug in
the car...

That's interesting about the battery. Did it not sound differently - I
mean,
the starter didn't audibly sound slower? Maybe it was the frog in the
kettle syndrome.

Encouraging that starts are possible in those temps without a block
heater.
My 240D seems to need glow plugs right now - wouldn't start at all last
time
I tried (in about 30 degree weather). Must order some plugs from Rusty.

Often, on my other car, if I have the time, I'll throw my small batt.
charger on and set it to boost as I crank, if it's particularly cold
outside, just to sort of keep the batt. from having to work so hard as
I
crank for a longer time. Of course I cringe, hoping the batt. won't
explode.

 dead.

Agree with crank until it starts but in my 300D I seem to have
better luck by pressing the accelerator to the floor, then releasing
it, and then cranking without any throttle, or a very slight throttle,
until it starts firing. Then gradually give it more throttle until it
is firing on all cylinders.

I've heard this hold the throttle to the floor recommendation from
several sources but when I do it, it seems to dump in too much fuel
(or otherwise squelch the combustion) and it does not start firing
until I release the throttle.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Audi Allroad?

2007-01-04 Thread Curt Raymond

My parents had a '95 Cherokee that they replaced in '01 because it had NO floor
under the passenger side. All the way from the firewall to the rear seat was
gone. The passenger seat was even missing one bolt that had fallen through the
brace.
Apparently the windshield leaked which is apparently fairly common.
My in-laws have a '96 with the same leak which I've tried to fix with flowable
silicon twice. Its only just a tiny leak now but The gasket is nice and
pliable. I took it to a glass shop and the guy didn't want to replace it, said
it looked fine.

gotta take oil. I go to the O'Reilly's and just go in back and pour
mine in a tank they have (they take filters too), or to the recycle
facility on Westpark. The recycle facility is sort of a fun experience,
in a weird way, the people they have working there seem to get really
excited about bringing 3 or 4 gal of oil, for reasons about which I can
only speculate. they seem to have some limit but I usually yowyow with
the attendant and it works out.

At $ 2.50+ a gallon diesel it would also cut down the initial cost of the

at the relay.

1: 5.75 K Ohms
2: 0.6 Ohms
3: 0.9 Ohms
4: no reading - open circuit
5: 470 Ohms

I have 2 spares on hand, guess I'll replace #1 and #4 and order a
replacement for #5 plus a few spares -- is #3 on its way out, or is
that within the normal range?

price. I've seen them in ads, and also at the Classic Center in Irvine and
at Montvale HQ. A lot of the info that they put on the certificate is
available a considerably less cost, just not as pretty - like the original

The folks in the Pacific Northwest are like any others - treat them
like you
want to be treated, and you'll get along just fine. Living in NE
Tacoma for
3 years, we found the locals all to be as nice or better than we've
seen
anywhere in the USA - and we all laughed at the tongue-in-cheek
comments
about immigrants from other states.
There was always the unwritten law though that insisted that it rains
all
the time in Seattle, to discourage too much of an inclination to
attract
newcomers. In actuality, New York City gets more rainfall every year,
although over less days (average). What people don't realize is that
Washington has not only high desert that requires irrigation to produce
crops, but also has desert and rain forest conditions on the Olympic
peninsula. The neat part is that most years, there are flowers and
green
grass, and little snow to bother with for any long periods.
Now if you want a bit of snobbery (flame suit on), take a good look at
the
old New England states, where if you didn't get your feet wet while
climbing
off the Mayflower, you are just a newbie.

At one time, the mount of gas, diesel, etc extracted from a barrel of
oil
depended on the oil. At that time, diesel as almost a waste product. But
through modern cracking reformulation processes, the refineries can
 choose
what they get out of a barrel you can get more gas per gallon of crude

than diesel. It also doesn't help that diesel is taxed more per gallon

In MA IIRC diesel is taxed something like $0.40 more per gallon than gas. With
diesel now onyl $0.30/gal more than gas it'd be cheaper than gas if it weren't
for the tax...

It gets cheaper in the summer too, remember that diesel and home heating fuel
are the same thing. Get everybody to convert to propane, natural gas or
(shudder) electric and diesel prices would plummet.

MUCH lower demand for kerosene these days. Add to that kerosene of today (K1)
is not what kerosesne of yesterday (stove oil) was.
Today its a lighter faction of diesel fuel. Back in the day it was whatever was
leftover after the refining process was complete.
Good: K1 stinks alot less and burns alot cleaner. Newer refining processes keep
all oil based fuels way cheaper than they should be based on inflation and
increases in the cost of extraction.
Bad: Expensive K1.

Agree with crank until it starts...

Me too. A VW mechanic once told me he instructed his customers to crank
it until it starts or until it becomes clear it's not going to, because
if you stop and then try again, you've essentially started the process
all over again. In cold weather you may only have the battery power for
one shot at it. He also noted that if the car is going to start, it
will probably fire within the first 15 seconds. (15 seconds doesn't
sound like much, but it seems like a long time when you're cranking an
engine.)

It's also important to not release the key the first time the engine
fires, like you would on a gasoline engine. Keep it turned until the
engine is actually *running*. Otherwise it tends to fire once and then
die. I don't remember what the Mercedes manual says, but the one for my
VW said to hold the key in the start position until the engine is
firing regularly or words to that effect.

I've heard this hold the throttle to the floor recommendation from
several sources but when I do it, it seems to dump in too much fuel
(or otherwise squelch the combustion) and it does not start firing
 until I release the throttle.

I had the best luck with 1/3 to 1/2 throttle, myself. I'd hold it there
while cranking, then slowly back off as the engine picked up speed,
trying to keep it around 1,000 RPM until all the cylinders were firing.
This was on cold starts. On hot starts I didn't touch the throttle.

Their offer is just that, an offer. You can reject it and try to
convince them your car is worth more than they're claiming. The best
way to do this is to search eBay and Craigslist for similar cars that
are selling for more money. If you can get the seller to send you a
letter confirming the price the car sold for, that's even better,
because it represents an actual selling price, not an advertised price.

You probably don't need a lawyer, but you will need to devote some
time. There's a good narrative from someone else who went through this
process here:
http://gerry.vanagon.com/files/auto-insurance-madness.html

Keep in mind that you can always buy the car back for its salvage
value if they do total it. It'll have a salvage title, though, which
will forever reduce its resale value and may make it hard to get
collision or comprehensive insurance on.

I suppose one could always try to but it cheaper from a competitor...

NOT!

I may order one before they realize their monopoly power to set the price
just about anywhere they wanted to...

Re: [MBZ] speaking of ULSD

Kaleb - I've had several tankfuls of the 15ppm fuel since September, and now
that's all they have around here. Both the '90 2.5 and the '83 SD seem to
run just fine.
The low sulfur worries may well be similar to when they took the lead out of
gasoline, when there were dire warnings of valve wear, etc. That seems now
to be more urban legend than anything else. Time will tell if ULSD follows
a similar story line...

Last time I filled up last week was the first time I noticed the sticker
saying it was the ULSD. Since we seem to be getting it now, should I be
adding anything to each tank of diesel? Marshall?

Re: [MBZ] Gas vs. diesel prices?

2007-01-04 Thread Werner Fehlauer
At the FlyingJ last weekend in South Jersey, ULSD was 2.43, and RUG was
2.24. Somehow, across the state line in DE and PA, they manage to rip
drivers off by charging 40-60 cents more per gallon for Diesel fuel, while
only charging 10-20 cents more for gas. Can't all be just taxes.

In MA IIRC diesel is taxed something like $0.40 more per gallon than gas.
With diesel now onyl $0.30/gal more than gas it'd be cheaper than gas if
it weren't for the tax...

It gets cheaper in the summer too, remember that diesel and home heating
fuel are the same thing. Get everybody to convert to propane, natural gas
or (shudder) electric and diesel prices would plummet.

Anyone heard or care to make any guesses on the price difference
between gas
and diesel? Am I ever going to see Diesel cheaper than gas again? Or
is
diesel simply going to keep it's 30-80 cent increase in price over gas?
Is
it because of ulsd?

I think people just got kind of tired, during the 90s, of Californians

whining about the rain.
