I thought looking at it would make it obvious how to release the old one (which I have not yet been able to do). It doesn't. I see how to turn it to the position where the grooves line up and stick a paperclip in to trigger the catch, but I can't see how that magically releases the cylinder and allows it to be separated from the surrounding part. Any tips? Have you read the section of the manual (46-8010 8110) or CD that covers tumbler removal and making the U shaped tool with the acutely pointed tips that is needed to unlock the tumbler? Seems pretty self explanatory to me (but I'm not sure it was the first time I tried to remove a cylinder). Marshall -- Marshall Booth Ph.D. Ass't Prof. (ret.) They did NOT come as standard equipment on a 6.9. They were a very expensive option that very few people paid for, which is why they are so rare. They were never sold as a replacement part. Re: [MBZ] Did they make a 15 bundt wheel
If someone is serious about obtaining the 15 bundts, I can get them. I have a connection that has them available in limited numbers, new, never mounted, genuine MB, no aftermarket junk. The cost is quite considerable, however. WRT the aftermarket variants, I would suggest only obtaining Ronals as they were manufactured to a higher standard. I have heard the ATS and Centra variants have issues with hub cracking over time from more than one source. Those variants lack a metal collar where the lug bolt presses against the rim and due to over-tightening the lugs, something more than common, the hubs will begin to crack. If you have a set of these, I suggest that you have them x-rayed to check for potential failure. [MBZ] Legality of towing unregistered car in NY?
Anyone happen to know what the legality is of towing an unregistered car in NY? I've got a Subaru that needs fixing and I think I may let someone else do it, but it's not registered... I'm thinking I would tow it down and then maybe just attach the strap and mock-tow it back(assuming it runs then), but it wouldn't have plates either way... Re: [MBZ] Post Falls SL
Well, fool that I am it turns out that in the haste of the on-the-road repair attempt I had jumpered the wrong two pins on the fuel pump/kickdown relay. (Pin 87k is not the same as pin 87.) When I jumpered the correct two pins the pump ran. (That would have made getting it home a lot easier!) On the plus side, this mistake did cause me to take apart the connections on the fuel pump, for which the protective boots were all torn up. I taped up the boots and potted them in Shoe Goo, this should help keep the water out of these connections. Anyway, I put the relay on the bench and it didn't feed power to the pump output unless the start pin was asserted. It might be supposed to give it a burp of a second or so at key-on as well, though I only infer this from the 560 SLs' behaviors. (And obviously it also didn't feed power when the engine is running.) I opened it up to find the usual sort of vintage circuit: two CMOS 4013 dual-D flip-flops, two 555 timers, four transistors, nine diodes, two electrolytic capacitors, two trim pots, one thermistor, two relays, and the usual handful of resistors and capacitors. Highly repairable, in other words. The solder was starting to look a little oxidized, I suspect that this thing will succumb to a resoldering. The relay box is labeled with 5300/min 8Zyl.12V, a Bosch logo and 896377, Kickdown, and has what looks like a date code on it: 27-02-1997. If so this certainly isn't the original! And if so, isn't much of an advertisement for Bosch electrical part longevity. So I resoldered it, first giving it a good wire-brushing with the Dremel to remove oxidation. When reinstalled in the car, it started and ran. That's $155 I don't need to spend! (The fuel pump, also unnecessary, is $250.) There was still no key-on burp, so I guess that's a feature of later cars. I then cleaned off the differential fill plug and removed it. (It has a non-factory gasket on it, and the plug has been chiseled, though the hex socket is still in good shape.) The oil was low, but not dangerously so. I put in 1/2 quart and put the plug back in, lowered the car, and took it for a little test drive. It drove well, the engine and transmission seemed as it should, the brakes worked well. (Perhaps not perfectly, it did pull a bit.) It seemed to have the requisite amount of power for the 3.8l motor, though I've no prior experience with them. There was some rattling from the RF corner of the car on the gravel washboard, there may be some loose suspension. I'll have a look at that sometime. I tried the cruise and it didn't work, though I recall the PO saying something about that it should be disconnected because he thought it could self-destruct trying to use it when it was flakey. It may be unplugged somewhere. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Legality of towing unregistered car in NY?
Do you folks have repair plates? Around here the garages usually have a repair plate that can be used to transport a vehicle to the garage. The garage will usually lend you the plate in order to get the vehicle in. Some places also will sell you a one day permit to move a vehicle. I know you can get one here to move a vehicle to another province. Don't know if you can get one to move a vehicle within the province. Would probably have to have a current safety certificate to do that in any event. Another option is to get a tow truck. It will be cheaper in the long run than a ticket or an accident if you get caught or if things go wrong. I had a Jeep towed home for my younger son a month or so ago and and it cost $70 for a tow of 5 miles or so. I was tempted to tow it behind one of our trucks but also thought it would cost more than the tow to replace the back bumper on the truck if the Jeep happened to bump me. I have towed with just a rope. I towed a friend about 35 miles. He had a mid 80's full size Cadillac with an engine knock. He kept the motor running to provide power steering and brakes and I towed him with my old Chevy pickup. It was pretty smooth. You really want to be able to trust the other driver no matter whether you are in the tow vehicle or the towed vehicle. Also towed a Chevy pickup home from about 50 miles away on a 1/2 nylon rope behind a Ford pickup many years ago. No real problem. I drove the tow vehicle and my father steered the towed vehicle. I don't think he trusted me to not hit him from behind. I was pretty young then and he just instructed me to keep the speed down to about 40 mph and let him worry about not running into the back of me. It was pretty hilly country and we slowed a bit going up hills but there was not much traffic and we got home fine. In Arizona, we can pull and print a 3 day pass, on line, for a dollar, that allows us to drive or tow the vehicle with defunct plates. Perhaps NY has a similar program. We have a wonderful on line DMV that allows registration renewals, with the emissions tester posting passing results electronically for your vehicle. No standing in line! Yeah, that's about what I figured... Well my dad has a truck and trailer but that's over in Hornell, so the extra cost to drive it might suck out as much as other thoughts... I'm wondering what the minimum cost would be to re-register it would be. Re: [MBZ] Legality of towing unregistered car in NY?
IMO, the thing the state os trying to do when requiring plates on all vehicles - even short erm tow vehicles, is to make sure they have insurance on them. All in all a good thing should I get hit by one. ;-) But a PITA when *I* need to move a vehicle. When I bought my 911 I drove 80 mi to look at it and it if it was as described and I ended up driving it back. The PO let me keep the tags and I mailed them to him as soon as I got home. Also, I called my insurance man (State Farm) and told him what I might be doing - he said to call him with the VIN within 30 days - and I'd be covered from that point (when I bought it) to the end of 30 days. Technically, I suspect I was doing something illegal - driving my car with someone elses tags (PO) - but being insured was my biggest concern. Maybe on the someone else's plates part, but you don't even need to have plates for a certain amount of time after you've bought the car. In MS you have seven days to license the vehicle after a purchase. I drove my 300D 2.5T from Ohio to MS and didn't have any problems... While in MS I got pulled over and showed the bill of sale (the title in this case) which said I had purchased the car the day before. Officer told me to have a nice day :) I think the same is also true for insurance. You have some minimum time where you're covered without actually having paid for it yet. If it will run and drive you can put insurance on it and buy a paper tag for 10 bucks. Mike Do you folks have repair plates? Re: [MBZ] high altitude driving problem
My son's SD had a similar problem a couple weeks ago on our road trip, listers suggested cleaning out the hose that comes off the back of the intake manifold and runs across to the ALDA. He cleaned it out (and where it exits the manifold) and that sorted things out. That line provides a pressure signal to increase the fuel flow with higher boost, apparently. I'll find the previous mails on the subject. --R Christopher McCann wrote: Howdy all - Just got back from a 2,600 mile (5 day) western trip in the SD. Along with the reduced power (like a non-turbocharged car) shifting is also affected. The most usual cause is a plugged pressure line, but a disconnected line or ANY plug of the line or the switchover valve between the intake manifold and the ALDA will result in the same effect. Re: [MBZ] Removing tinting
A spray bottle of soapy water (fill with water and add 5-10 drops of dish detergent) and a razor blade scraper. I think there is stuff you can buy to soften the adhesive, but it's probably nothing more than what I described above. Soak it well, let it sit for a while, soak it some more, and start scraping. If you can pry up a corner or some other place on the edge to let the water start getting under it, that will help to speed things up considerably. If you're living right it won't have been professionally installed. That stuff is a real bear to remove. Re: [MBZ] Legality of towing unregistered car in NY?
I just want to point out if anybody ever comes through the people's republic of MA NONE of this fine stuff will fly. In MA the state says if all 4 wheels are on the ground you WILL have current tags, you WILL have current insurance or you WILL get in deep doo doo. Paper tags are not legal and that includes those issued in other states. In actual fact State Troopers will almost never hassle you over something so piddling, I drove for 8 months with no inspection sticker, my inspection was current, I'd had the windshield replaced and forgot about it. A friend drove his brand new car into MA from NH and got hassled by a small town cop for having a paper tag. Another note, in Maine you have to PROVE insurance which means you have to have a slip of paper from your insurance company every 6 months proving you're current... -Curt Date: Thu, 02 Aug 2007 12:43:36 -0500 From: John Robbins [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] Legality of towing unregistered car in NY? In MS you have seven days to license the vehicle after a purchase. I drove my 300D 2.5T from Ohio to MS and didn't have any problems... While in MS I got pulled over and showed the bill of sale (the title in this case) which said I had purchased the car the day before. I have a Monster brand FM doohicky that I used in my 190D until my ipod died. It worked great but I have an aftermarket stereo. I'd take a portable radio out to the car and try tuneing them together. Sometimes its hard to know which part is wrong. Thats what I like about the doohicky I have, it tells you what station to be on. -Curt Date: Thu, 2 Aug 2007 12:14:58 -0700 From: Alex Chamberlain [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] Becker and ipod To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 On 8/2/07, Zoltan Finks [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On my trip driving my new 190D home from California, I tried to use my ipod with it's little broadcasting chingazo that allows it to play wirelessly through your radio. You have to experiment interminably with the position and angle of the transmitter and the length of the power antenna until you find the right combination to get the least staticky signal. Then as soon as you go around a corner and the iPod slides an inch across the seat or dash, you have to do it all over again. I went with a $5 cassette adapter for my cars that have tape decks, and a head unit with a 1/8 aux input on the 300D, which didn't come with its original Becker or any other head unit. Much better. Good idea. I can try the portable radio. Yes, I think I was properly following the procedure I had used in my Saab. I simply chose a station that had as close to pure static as possible, then chose that frequency from the ipod and hit play and then, well, I forget what to hit next. But usually, once I hit play, it would just work in a few seconds. Now to figure how to set the time on the radio. The car's owner's manual shows a slightly different radio - with a couple more features. When did the digital radio show up in these cars anyway? I seem to have a pretty early one. Levi On 8/2/07, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: If it will run and drive you can put insurance on it and buy a paper tag for 10 bucks. Mike Do you folks have repair plates? And it does go right past a police station... Anyone know if that's legal or not? I was thinking it was... But then I couldn't quite see how it could be if you can't pull a trailer without plates... Brian: My daughter has one of those little FM broadcasters she uses with her i-pod (or Zen or whatever) in her NIsssan Sentra. The little thing is pretty sensitive to where it is placed relative to the radio antenna. And the Nissan antenna is mounted on the front fender, right outside the windshield. I don't know know about your 190d, but the antennae on our 123's and 124's are mounted on the rear fender - pretty far from the dash and cigarette lighter. I've heard of people actually placing the i-pod with broadcaster in the back window to make it work with a rear antenna. As long as your radio can pull in 87.7 or whatever the lowest freq. is the chingazo should work. Maybe the chingazo is junk and the becker is fine. Re: [MBZ] Did they make a 15 bundt wheel
Are these the rims that look like a bunt cake pan? Or like a turbine fan? Didn't Ronal make the rims for the early AMG cars, or were they just copying the AMG rim? Ed 300E On 02/08/07, Mathieu J. Cama [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: If someone is serious about obtaining the 15 bundts, I can get them. Re: [MBZ] high altitude driving problem
Chris, If you haven't adjusted your ALDA, adjusting it CCW about a turn and a half will do wonders. As your SD went higher, the ALDA naturally reduced fuel to minimize smoking. The springs and such have weakened in your injection pump, also reducing fuel delivery at any given point, but especially noticeable in the power area before boost comes in. Reducing fuel reduces power availability! Of course, way too much fuel will kill power too. But there is much room for improvement! Another problem is that the torque converter stall speed is set so low on the early turbodiesels that the boost cannot come in until the car is moving. On my car the boost is also locked out when the trans is in low gear. Both these problems were corrected by MB when they removed the low gear protection circuit in 81, and later loosened up the stall speed about 84 or 85. Many years ago we had the same problem with our 79 300SD. On the Pikes Peak road no less. We could go like hell as long as the boost was up. On the 12 % grade two cars had stopped in opposite directions, effectively blocking traffic, and we had to stop. Ended up backing down the hill to a flat spot about 1000 feet back. Kids were crying, wife was doing what wives do. No one else in the car really wanted to try it again. When the road was clear, we went, no problems! I have since learned to adjust the ALDA, and when my engine was out for overhaul, I had the local trans shop shim the torque converter for a little more stall speed. I also bypassed the trans protection circuit. Nobody beats me across the intersection when the light changes, if I don't want them to!
